Bringing Back Color, Bringing Back Emotion: Exploring Phenomenological Empathy In The Reclamation Of The Female Nude In Painting, Sophia R. Forman
Bringing Back Color, Bringing Back Emotion: Exploring Phenomenological Empathy In The Reclamation Of The Female Nude In Painting, Sophia R. Forman
Scripps Senior Theses
At the nexus of the seemingly disparate art-theoretical topics of color and the female nude is a critical consideration of phenomenology in both one of its most basic senses—as the first-person experience of perceived phenomena—and as a larger philosophical position which, through its abstraction of perception to subject-object relationships, implicates the painted figure. Specifically, this paper conflates the phenomenology of color with the transcendental phenomenology of Edmund Husserl and Maurice Merleau-Ponty in investigating empathy. Structured as a dialectic, it establishes the most prominent views of both color and the female nude—the nude as a symbolic figure, color as perceptual experience—before …

The Grand Paris Express: An Analysis Of Social And Political Trends Towards Mass Transit Planning In The Île-De-France Region, Charlotte M. Leasia
Scripps Senior Theses
This thesis examines the Grand Paris Express project currently underway in the Île-de-France. The basis of this project is a series of new and renovated railway lines to connect and span across the entirety of the region. They are being planned with the hopes to improve urbanization for the outlying suburbs. The Île-de-France is the wealthiest region in France, but it has high economic inequality between its departments. One hard hit area is Seine-St-Denis. This is the area I will be focusing primarily on. Department number 93, its urban landscape holds histories of rioting, unemployment, and large immigrant populations. In …
Danger In Deviance: Colonial Imagery And The Power Of Indigenous Female Sexuality In New Spain, Mariel Frechette
Danger In Deviance: Colonial Imagery And The Power Of Indigenous Female Sexuality In New Spain, Mariel Frechette
Scripps Senior Theses
The primary objective of this work is to understand the importance of the indigenous, female body in early New Spain through the study of visual media from the first two centuries of colonization: specifically looking at illustrations from Book 10 (of 15) in the Florentine Codex and images of indigenous Christian wedding ceremonies such as the painted folding screen Indian Wedding and a Flying Pole (c.1690). I argue through visual, theoretical and historical analysis that regulating indigenous female sexuality was a critical component to in the creation of colonial New Spain and that imagery played an essential role in this …

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of implementing the Self-Regulated Strategy Development (SRSD) model of instruction (Graham & Harris, 2005; Harris & Graham, 1996) with a population of middle school students with Asperger syndrome (AS). A multiple-baseline design across participants was used to examine the effectiveness of the SRSD instructional intervention on writing skills and self-regulation, attitudes, self-efficacy, and social validity. Each participant was taught SRSD story writing strategies, and wrote stories in response to story prompts during the baseline, instruction, post-instruction, and maintenance phases. Stories were assessed for writing quantity (TWW), writing quality (%CWS), and …
Model Minority On The Modernization Project: Images Of Chinese Religiosity In America, Emily Wu
Model Minority On The Modernization Project: Images Of Chinese Religiosity In America, Emily Wu
Collected Faculty Scholarship
As the stereotypical model minority in the United States, Chinese Americans are rarely considered as religiously threatening. Those Chinese Americans who already were or became converted to mainstream Christianity are seen as cases of successful Americanization. Buddhism, another popular religious affiliation among the Chinese ethnics, is understood as a benign and respectable source of wisdom. Few Chinese ethnics identify themselves strictly as Daoist or Confucian, but there is a wide range of religious and spiritual practices that are diffused into their daily lives. Without specific religious affiliations or congregational headcount, eclectic practices such as ancestral worship, temple visits, home rituals, …

Best Practices For Successful In School Suspension Programs, Morgan Dimino
Education Masters
The study analyzed the disciplinary strategy known as In School Suspension and the types of supports students receive in four suburban schools located in upstate New York. I interviewed five administrators at the middle school level. Through the interviews and tape-recording the data, I found that there are several differences among the methods implemented in the four middle schools. Some of these differences consisted of the referral process, resources provided, and the exit procedure from the In School Suspension room. This study illustrates that although there are an array of differences between In School Suspension programs, each participating school had …

Response To Intervention: Should It Be Used?, Mark Smith
Education Masters
The purpose of this study was to determine to what extent Response to Intervention is used in urban schools at the secondary level. The lack of current research shows that its use is sporadic at best as compared to suburban schools and more affluent areas. Through interviewing administrators and special education teachers in an urban school district in upstate New York, it was evident that Response to Intervention is being used with varying levels of success. There are common roadblocks, which prevent the successful implementation. These roadblocks can be broken down into three themes: confusion with the process and practices, …

Past and present research demonstrates early reading success related to phonological awareness (PA) instruction conducted individually or in small groups outside of the preschool classroom. This study investigated the effects of an explicit, intensive and teacher-delivered PA instruction for children with speech sound disorder and language impairment as part of the preschool curriculum. The investigator examined the performance of individual cases in both groups, those who received instruction and the control. Two participants in each of the experimental (E1 and E2) and control (C1 and C2) groups had standardized scores indicating deficits in speech and/or language. These children who received …
Trademark Owner As Adverse Possessor: Productive Use And Property Acquisition, Jake Linford
Trademark Owner As Adverse Possessor: Productive Use And Property Acquisition, Jake Linford
Scholarly Publications
There is an ongoing debate over whether or not a trademark is “property,” and what the appropriate boundaries of such a property right might be. Some scholars assert that rules and justifications developed to handle rights in real property are generally a poor fit for intellectual property regimes and for trademark protection in particular. Others respond that a unified theory of property should be able to account for both real and intellectual property. Neither approach fully recognizes that property regimes are multifaceted. A close look at the critical features of particular regimes can pay unexpected dividends.
