Kenneth Burke As Educator: What His Theories Of Aesthetic Form And (Non-Symbolic) Motion/(Symbolic) Action Suggest For Teachers In The Literature Classroom, Tara Brock Boyce

Theses and Dissertations

Burke scholars oftentimes overlook Burke's fundamental role as educator and how his work can and should be applied to the classroom. This paper explores Burke's theoretical works and centers on two concepts important to developing rhetorical skills necessary for functioning and participating in a democratic society: his theory of aesthetic form and his distinction between motion and action. Specifically, this paper (1) clarifies these concepts and explains how they relate to each other and the emotional experience of literature, and (2) demonstrates how these concepts work together to imply a new method of practicing rhetorical criticism in the literature classroom …

Integration Of Dynamic Assessment And Instructional Conversations To Promote Development And Improve Assessment In The Language Classroom, Kristin Davin Jun 2013

Integration Of Dynamic Assessment And Instructional Conversations To Promote Development And Improve Assessment In The Language Classroom, Kristin Davin

Education: School of Education Faculty Publications and Other Works

This article explores how a primary school teacher utilized the frameworks of dynamic assessment (DA) and the instructional conversation (IC) within a Spanish as a foreign language classroom. DA was used to construct zones of proximal development with individuals in the classroom context. A menu of pre-scripted assisting prompts, used to respond to predictable lexical and grammatical errors, permitted the teacher to assess students while also promoting development. ICs were used to co-construct a group zone of proximal development (ZPD) in response to less predictable student errors or inquiries. The flexible mediation provided by the teacher in these instances allowed …

Pharmacologies Of Texts And Images, Noel Fitzpatrick Jun 2013

Pharmacologies Of Texts And Images, Noel Fitzpatrick

Conference Papers

The problematic of Ekphrasis will be the central tenant of this paper, a relationship between text, language and image. Ekphrasis broadly understood as the relationship between images and words, however, in the case of this paper it will be taken to mean the relationship between words and images in relation to memory. Bernard Stiegler’s work has become well renowned in relation to his exploration of texts and in particular the relationship between texts and technology; an intimate relationship, if writing is to be considered as a form of technology, a mnemonic form. However, there is also another aspect in the …

The Effectiveness Of Using Electropalatography To Remediate A Developmental Speech Sound Disorder In A School-Aged Child With Hearing Impairment, Kristina Lynne Pickett

Theses and Dissertations

Advances in instrumentation and computer technology such as electropalatography (EPG) have offered additional types of feedback to more traditional therapy for individuals with speech disorders, specifically those with hearing impairment. The purpose of this study was to document whether therapeutic integration of EPG visual feedback in combination with traditional articulation therapy for a school-aged child with an articulation disorder secondary to hearing impairment was more effective than traditional therapy alone. One participant received five sessions of each therapy approach. Six adult listeners rated the quality of the participant's production of /r/ in words recorded during the therapy sessions. The EPG …

Understanding Chinese Language And Culture: A Guidebook For Teachers Of English In China, Austin Cody Pack Jun 2013

Understanding Chinese Language And Culture: A Guidebook For Teachers Of English In China, Austin Cody Pack

Theses and Dissertations

Many experts on English teaching in China argue that native-English-speaking teachers are too unfamiliar with Chinese culture and the Chinese language. Many of the resources available for these teachers do not address these issues and are not adequately tailored to the native-English-speaking teachers' specific needs. This 35 page guidebook in printable pdf form addresses three key issues with English teaching in China. First, the guidebook helps teachers understand how to bridge the gap that exists between their teaching styles and their Chinese students' learning styles. Second, the guidebook provides explanations of common errors Chinese students make in English because of …

Understanding Pervasive Language Impairment In Young Children: Exploring Patterns In Narrative Language And Functional Communication, Anna Jeddeloh Waters Jun 2013

Understanding Pervasive Language Impairment In Young Children: Exploring Patterns In Narrative Language And Functional Communication, Anna Jeddeloh Waters

Dissertations and Theses

Research has identified language impairment as a pervasive disability (Bishop & Edmundson, 1987; Greenhalgh & Strong, 2001). Classroom communication behaviors have a role in the maintenance of special education eligibility and functional communication difficulties for young children with language impairment. This paper reviews the theoretical and experimental literature on narrative skills and language impairment as well as empirical support for understanding language delays as part of a group of risk factors that affect child development. The present study describes patterns in the communication skills of a small group of young children with a predetermined diagnosis of language impairment using a …

Clean And Dirty International Technology Diffusion, Valentina Bosetti, Elena Verdolini Jun 2013

Clean And Dirty International Technology Diffusion, Valentina Bosetti, Elena Verdolini

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

This paper investigates the role of Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) protection and Environmental Policies (EPs) on clean (renewable) and dirty (fossil-based) technology diffusion from top-innovators. IPR protection and EPs are extensively debated policy tools, as IPR protection addresses knowledge market failure, while EPs respond to pressing local and global environmental externalities. A model of monopolistic competition inspired by the recent trade literature shows that the profits associated with exporting a blueprint are a function of the quality of the idea and of market and institutional characteristics of the receiving country. We test the empirical implications of our model using patent …

Anonymous Social Influence, Manuel Förster, Michel Grabisch, Agnieszka Rusinowsk Jun 2013

Anonymous Social Influence, Manuel Förster, Michel Grabisch, Agnieszka Rusinowsk

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

We study a stochastic model of influence where agents have “yes” or “no” inclinations on some issue, and opinions may change due to mutual influence among the agents. Each agent independently aggregates the opinions of the other agents and possibly herself. We study influence processes modelled by ordered weighted averaging operators, which are anonymous: they only depend on how many agents share an opinion. For instance, this allows to study situations where the influence process is based on majorities, which are not covered by the classical approach of weighted averaging aggregation. We find a necessary and sufficient condition for convergence …

Artifice, The Semiosphere, And Counter-Consciousness (Or) A Model For A Counter-Design And Design Research, Joshua Singer Jun 2013

Artifice, The Semiosphere, And Counter-Consciousness (Or) A Model For A Counter-Design And Design Research, Joshua Singer

Nordes Conference Series

If we are to find a future in the practice of design (this paper limits itself to graphic design and design research) which aims to assist in the evolution of culture (as opposed to perpetuating the “closed” stabilizing system of culture and language, the persistent heterogeneity, conventions and givens), design might pivot (a designerly thing, as simple as to turn as a slight of hand or as a playful manipulation as in Détournement) to a critical and discursive practice of counter-design. Abandoning the territory of commercial practice for an experimental counter-practice, design becomes an active agent in the “open” system …

Towards A Manifesto For Methodological Experimentation In Design Research, Henry Mainsah, Andrew Morrison Jun 2013

Towards A Manifesto For Methodological Experimentation In Design Research, Henry Mainsah, Andrew Morrison

Nordes Conference Series

This paper argues that design research may benefit from investigations, explorations and innovations in the means of conducting and of conveying design research from qualitative methods in the social sciences. The paper examines how inter-disciplinary and intermethodological experimentation as a mode of knowledge building. At the end of the paper we draw out a manifesto that proposes potential actions concerning design research methods which ought to be applicable for designers and design researchers, but also for social scientists engaging with the changing nature of production-related inquiry and critique in which design increasingly features.

Becoming The Energy Aware Clock: Revisiting The Design Process Through A Feminist Gaze, Karin Ehrnberger, Loove Broms, Cecilia Katzeff* Jun 2013

Becoming The Energy Aware Clock: Revisiting The Design Process Through A Feminist Gaze, Karin Ehrnberger, Loove Broms, Cecilia Katzeff*

Nordes Conference Series

This paper explores the border between technology and design (form giving) from a feminist perspective. Looking at the energy system and how it has been integrated in the household, we want to address the underlying structures that have been built into the ecology of electrical appliances used in daily life, preserving certain norms that could be questioned from both a gender and a sustainability perspective. We have created an alternative electricity meter, the Energy AWARE Clock, addressing design issues uncovered in an initial field study. In this paper, we will make parallels to these issues. We also use feminist technoscience …

Revisiting Ekphrasis: The Early Hermeneutic Phenomenology Of Paul Ricoeur., Noel Fitzpatrick Jun 2013

Revisiting Ekphrasis: The Early Hermeneutic Phenomenology Of Paul Ricoeur., Noel Fitzpatrick

Conference Papers

Through revisiting the notion of the symbol and sign in the relatively early work of Paul Ricoeur it hoped to point to a yet unexplored element of his work in relation to Aesthetics and contemporary Critical Theory. This paper will focus on a particular point in the work of Paul Ricoeur, a point where the problematic of language begins to come to the fore within his structural phenomenology of the late 1950s and early 1960s. The publication of The Symbolism of Evil in 1960 represents a definite departure from the structural Phenomenology of his earlier works where the central concern …

Vernacular Explanations Of Causation In Lay Health Discourse, Laurel Smith Stvan Jun 2013

Vernacular Explanations Of Causation In Lay Health Discourse, Laurel Smith Stvan

Linguistics & TESOL Faculty Publications & Presentations - Archive

Few linguistic works exam vernacular terms for health concepts rather than technical medical terms (cf. Rueda-Baclig & Florencio 2003). The prevalence of conversations on food, sleep, exercise, and illness – and the ordinariness of the words – leads to aspects of lexical misinterpretation remaining understudied. Lay terms with multiple senses are studied here to determine effects on misunderstanding of causality in health discussions.

Six Principles Of Self-Regulated Learning: Developing Self-Regulated Language Learners, Andrea Michelle Gonzalez Jun 2013

Six Principles Of Self-Regulated Learning: Developing Self-Regulated Language Learners, Andrea Michelle Gonzalez

Theses and Dissertations

Self-regulation is an important aspect of learning, and all teachers want to instill this ability in their students. However, students often feel confused or inadequate when it comes to being in charge of their own learning. This is especially true in intensive English programs where students expect the teacher to provide them with the information they need to pass tests and advance to higher levels. While the teacher's role cannot be overlooked, encouraging self-regulated learning is also vital to students' success in learning. The author saw a need for this in the intensive English program where she is teaching. She …

Further Our Understanding Of Reflection Through I-Statement Analysis, Yi Chun, Sherri Wei, Hui Ching, Beatrice Hsu Jun 2013

Further Our Understanding Of Reflection Through I-Statement Analysis, Yi Chun, Sherri Wei, Hui Ching, Beatrice Hsu

Asia-Pacific Regional Conference on Service-Learning 亞太地區服務研習會議

Since Dewey (1933) highlighted reflection as an essential component in higher education, scholars (Dyment & O’Connell, 2011, Finlay 2008, & Hatcher, Bringle, & Muthiah, 2004) have pointed out the crucial role reflection plays in Service-Learning (S-L). Listed as one of the essential elements in service-learning, reflection acts as the hyphen between service and learning (Giles & Eyler, 1999). It enables participants to connect action and learning in a real-life setting, creating a new dimension through a deeper understanding of their experiences. No longer passive consumers of knowledge, participants can better clarify their own beliefs and values, explore issues emerged in …

An Intergenerational Strategy For Promoting Successful Aging And Esl Skills, Wai Lun, Alan Lai, Matthew Kaplan Jun 2013

An Intergenerational Strategy For Promoting Successful Aging And Esl Skills, Wai Lun, Alan Lai, Matthew Kaplan

Asia-Pacific Regional Conference on Service-Learning 亞太地區服務研習會議

This presentation highlights the need for a new approach for conducting ESL education in Hong Kong. It draws upon the literature on how children and youth learn new language skills, and takes into account recent data that demonstrates the value of real-life contexts and information made easily available in the teaching-learning interface for ESL education (Lai, 2011). To explore the foundations of this approach, an action research project that represents an intergenerational framework for promoting ESL skills has been established. The core of this project involves infusing intergenerational engagement opportunities into the ESL learning milieu. This model represents a novel …

Hashtag Politics: The Polyphonic Revolution Of #Twitter, Bud Davis Jun 2013

Hashtag Politics: The Polyphonic Revolution Of #Twitter, Bud Davis

Pepperdine Journal of Communication Research

Social media has revolutionized how citizens communicate and interact with each other. President Barack Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign notably demonstrated just how impactful online interconnectivity could be in reaching out to key demographics. More specifically, Twitter has become increasingly popular in achieving communication with constituents while enabling voters to become citizen journalists and active participants in the political process. This paper seeks to trace the evolution of Twitter as a political resource and determine what influence it has in enhancing and inhibiting political communication. By drawing on Kristeva’s concept of intertextuality, I argue that Twitter’s unique functionality contains the potential …

Building Partnership In Service-Learning : Some Reflections, Nirmala Jeyaraj

Asia-Pacific Regional Conference on Service-Learning 亞太地區服務研習會議

Service-Learning is a proven pedagogy for holistic learning and is practiced across the globe by educators both at secondary and tertiary levels. Different models and methods have been developed and adopted to suit one’s educational system, discipline of the learner, socio-cultural context and needs of the community. However the basic philosophy of service learning to mutually benefit the learner and the community remains the same. The success of S-L depends largely upon the partnership involved in the learning process. At micro level (within an educational institution) academic service learning involves two major players other than the community namely, the teacher …

The Applicability Of Institutional Dynamics Framework For A Model For Enterprise Growth In Grenada And The Dominican Republic: A Preliminary Exploration, Reccia N. Charles, Nazly N. Nardi, Ruth Clarke

HCBE Faculty Presentations

Generally governments in developing economies work towards encouraging enterprise growth as the engine to increase national wealth and higher standards of living. In terms of the form of enterprise, some countries favor public or public-private partnerships, while others favor private enterprise primarily. The smaller the economy the more likely it is that the government will be involved in promoting the growth of enterprises. This paper examines the role of institutional dynamics in supporting or limiting enterprise growth in Grenada and the Dominican Republic. The interplay of the three parts of the institutional profile, regulatory, cognitive and normative, will be influenced in …
