From Theory To Practice: Translating Ying Chen's Les Lettres Chinoises, Sunny Ann Hendry Jun 2013

From Theory To Practice: Translating Ying Chen's Les Lettres Chinoises, Sunny Ann Hendry

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis analyzes Ying Chen's Les Lettres Chinoises through the lenses of literary translation, migrant writing and epistolary genres, as well as through critical theory of Chen's poetics in order to inform a translation of said novel from French into English. This theoretical groundwork is accompanied by analysis of the process of the translation, including specifications, methods used, and justifications for translation decisions. Les Lettres Chinoises is Ying Chen's second novel, written in French rather than her native Chinese language. Spanning a fifty-seven letter exchange between Shanghai and Montreal, Chen's choice to write in language other than her first, as …

Design And Realization Of A Hybrid Intelligent Controller For A Twin Rotor Mimo System, Jih-Gau Juang, Kai-Ti Tu Jun 2013

Design And Realization Of A Hybrid Intelligent Controller For A Twin Rotor Mimo System, Jih-Gau Juang, Kai-Ti Tu

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

An intelligent control scheme using a fuzzy switching mechanism, grey prediction and genetic algorithm (GA) is applied to a coupled nonlinear system, called a twin rotor multi-input multi-output system (TRMS). In real-time control, a Xilinx Spartan II SP200 FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array) is employed to construct a hardware-in-the-loop system through writing VHDL on this FPGA. The objective is to stabilize the TRMS in significant cross-coupled conditions, and to experiment with setpoint control and trajectory tracking. The proposed scheme improves the performance of the PID controller. Control gains and parameters of the fuzzy switching mechanism are obtained by GA. Simulation …

A Typology Of Actional-Operational Modes In Earth Science And Implications For Science Literacy Instruction, Amy Wilson-Lopez Jun 2013

A Typology Of Actional-Operational Modes In Earth Science And Implications For Science Literacy Instruction, Amy Wilson-Lopez

Teacher Education and Leadership Faculty Publications

Framed in theories of social semiotics, this multiple case study describes and categorizes the actional-operational modes used by three middle school earth science teachers throughout the course of one school year. Data included field notes, photographs, and video-recordings of classroom instruction, as well as periodic interviews with the teachers. A constant comparative analysis of the data resulted in the creation of a typology of actional-operational modes according to how they fulfilled the ideational, interpersonal, and textual metafunctions of communication. Six categories of actional-operational modes were identified: gesture, embodied representation, moving objects on flat surfaces, moving objects through three-dimensional space, material representations, …

The Intellectual And Curricular Spaces Of Knowledge Studies, Jay H. Bernstein Jun 2013

The Intellectual And Curricular Spaces Of Knowledge Studies, Jay H. Bernstein

Publications and Research

The words “knowledge” and “information” are sometimes used interchangeably, but the connection between them is complex and problematic. Knowledge is a mental product gained from engaging with information. All educational subjects, scholarly disciplines, occupations, and activities produce knowledge as well as information. Because libraries encompass potentially all subjects, professional vision in librarianship would benefit from an examination of knowledge that transcends the methods and topical concerns of individual disciplines. An interdisciplinary (or transdisciplinary) framework in which to view knowledge was pioneered in the post-Sputnik age by Fritz Machlup and Michael Polanyi. Their insights have stimulated scholars to develop research, publications, …

Automated Identification Of Relative Clauses In Child Language Samples, Erika E. Ehlert Jun 2013

Automated Identification Of Relative Clauses In Child Language Samples, Erika E. Ehlert

Theses and Dissertations

Relative clauses are grammatical constructions that are of relevance in both typical and impaired language development. Thus, the accurate identification of these structures in child language samples is clinically important. In recent years, computer software has been used to assist in the automated analysis of clinical language samples. However, this software has had only limited success when attempting to identify relative clauses. The present study explores the development and clinical importance of relative clauses and investigates the accuracy of the software used for automated identification of these structures. Two separate collections of language samples were used. The first collection included …

“Moral Influence” In Asia: Political Practice And Electoral Corruption In The Spanish Philippines, Juan Antonio; Inarejos Jun 2013

“Moral Influence” In Asia: Political Practice And Electoral Corruption In The Spanish Philippines, Juan Antonio; Inarejos

Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints

Proceeding from a microhistory of local elections at the end of the nineteenth century in one municipality, thisarticle traces the mechanisms of representation and exercise of local power in the Spanish Philippines. Within the colonial apparatus the municipal sphere was one of the few areas of tangible power for the principalía (indigenous elites). The local elites, who were selected by colonial authorities based on political, economic, and religious criteria, played an important role in the fealties and resistances in the colony. Thisarticle examines the significance of the Maura Law, or the electoral reforms of 1893, and the obstacles encountered in …

Gray Love The Career Of Gov. John Early In The Cordilleras, Shelton; Boise Woods Jun 2013

Gray Love The Career Of Gov. John Early In The Cordilleras, Shelton; Boise Woods

Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints

Unlike the usual portrayals of racism of American colonial officials in the Philippines, thisarticle explores the career of John Early, a mid-level official who rose to become the governor of the Mountain Province in 1922 until his death in 1932. In 1911 he had served as lieutenant governor of Bontoc but was fired, according to his memoir, for defending the rights of the indigenous highlanders against unfair American colonials. Early’s rather unorthodox rise in the colonial government included actions that at times appear to contradict the prevailing thoughts of the day. Thearticle asserts the complex nature of human motives. Keywords: American …

Creating Community While Learning Italian: An Experiment In Communitarian Language Learning, David Sabey, Jennifer Brown Jun 2013

Creating Community While Learning Italian: An Experiment In Communitarian Language Learning, David Sabey, Jennifer Brown

Journal of Undergraduate Research

As a student instructor of an Italian 102 class, I adopted an action-research methodology in hopes to understand more fully how to develop sense of community in a language-learning classroom environment. Thus, my research goal was twofold: 1. I wanted to work with my students to create the ideal classroom community. I hoped that my students would get to know each other, enjoy their time in class, in each other’s company, and mutually help each other to learn and use Italian. This aspect of my goal is associated chiefly with the positive affect that would derive from the kind of …

Native Speaker Judgments On The Accentedness And Personal Traits Of American And Korean L2 Learners Of German, Charles Richards, Dr. Hans-Wilhelm Kelling Jun 2013

Native Speaker Judgments On The Accentedness And Personal Traits Of American And Korean L2 Learners Of German, Charles Richards, Dr. Hans-Wilhelm Kelling

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Everyday listeners make personal judgments about the people with whom they are speaking based on the accent or voice quality of the speaker. Studies have shown that a person’s speech– independent of accent–can influence a listener to make judgments about the speaker’s intelligence, sociability, trustworthiness, and a number of other personal traits (Hiraga, 1999). But what happens when “foreign” accent is added to the equation? Purnell et al. (2005) found that when the same person reading from the same script called to make appointments to see apartments, the speaker had more success getting an appointment when he spoke with a …

Languages Without Borders: Creating An Enhanced Teacher’S Guide For Romanian 101, Sarah Holden, Dr. Michael Bush Jun 2013

Languages Without Borders: Creating An Enhanced Teacher’S Guide For Romanian 101, Sarah Holden, Dr. Michael Bush

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Brigham Young University’s Romanian orphanage internship has been a popular and well-attended program since its inception, attracting mainly students majoring in childhood development, nursing, psychology, and health sciences. The volunteer work these interns perform during their semester abroad is of utmost importance–both to the orphans receiving care and to the students providing it. The orphanage caretakers greatly value BYU interns, but have often expressed frustration in their inability to adequately communicate in the Romanian language. Although a beginning Romanian course has been offered at BYU for several years, it was clear that its curriculum needed to be altered and an …

Judeo-Spanish In Thessaloniki: A Survey Of The Speakers Of The Dialect Today, Randall Craig Meister, Dr. David Eddington Jun 2013

Judeo-Spanish In Thessaloniki: A Survey Of The Speakers Of The Dialect Today, Randall Craig Meister, Dr. David Eddington

Journal of Undergraduate Research

“Pero Salonik no kanta mas1,” said an elderly speaker of Judeo-‐Spanish in Thessaloniki, as she reflected with me during a discussion concerning her life as a Sephardic Jew after World War II. This expression embodies the historical and cultural awareness of the dwindling Judeo-‐Spanish speaking Sephardic community in Thessaloniki, Greece2. After 500 years of prevalence in Thessaloniki, Greece, the Spanish-‐ peaking Sephardic Jews have endured centuries of Muslim rule, Greek cultural assimilation, a horrific Holocaust, and starkly diversified linguistic exposure. This plethora of diversity and circumstances has created a dwindling community of speakers, but a community, …

Marshallese Corpus Project: The Marshallese Language Resource, Marco Mora Huizar, Dr. Heather Willson Jun 2013

Marshallese Corpus Project: The Marshallese Language Resource, Marco Mora Huizar, Dr. Heather Willson

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The purpose of the Marshallese Corpus Project (MCP) is to create an extensive online corpus of Marshallese language texts to be used for research and other applications. Currently, there is a severe lack of resources for the study of the Marshallese language, and it is difficult to gain access to many Marshallese texts. Further, there is little by way of available naturalistic language data in Marshallese. Therefore, the ability of both researchers and language learners to study the language is severely inhibited. This project involves collecting both printed and online text samples, standardizing the spelling of these texts and creating …

Don’T Judge A Voice By Its Color: The Influence Of Visual And Linguistic Cues On Racial Profiling, Alex Jennings, Dr. Wendy Baker-Smemoe Jun 2013

Don’T Judge A Voice By Its Color: The Influence Of Visual And Linguistic Cues On Racial Profiling, Alex Jennings, Dr. Wendy Baker-Smemoe

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Linguistic profiling1 has emerged as an area of research only within the last decade. Several researchers have shown that people who speak non-standard, ethnically-tied dialects are treated less favorably than their Standard American English (SAE)-speaking counterparts. However, no known studies have shown the relative importance of visual versus linguistic cues in profiling. The purpose of my project was to experimentally this by answering this question: Does one’s dialect have a greater bearing on racial judgments than skin color? Sadly, because this type of research has never really been done, we had to synthesize a new methodology. We did this …

Noun-Preposition Collocations: The 2010 Chicago Manual Of Style (Cms) Compared To The Corpus Of Contemporary American English (Coca), Christina Champenois, Doris Dant Jun 2013

Noun-Preposition Collocations: The 2010 Chicago Manual Of Style (Cms) Compared To The Corpus Of Contemporary American English (Coca), Christina Champenois, Doris Dant

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary defines collocation as “a noticeable arrangement or conjoining of linguistic elements” (s.v. “collocation”). Collocational constructions may present difficulties to editors, translators, and second-language learners. Malgorzata Martyńska explains that collocations tend to be “one of the most problematic and error-generating area [sic] of vocabulary, especially for second language learners” (5) and that “collocations pose enormous problems, even for the most proficient in English” (10). My research focuses specifically on noun-preposition collocations.

The Merchant Of Venice And The Tempest: Singapore Presentation, Andrew Wiggins, Dr. Brandie Siegfried Jun 2013

The Merchant Of Venice And The Tempest: Singapore Presentation, Andrew Wiggins, Dr. Brandie Siegfried

Journal of Undergraduate Research

In preparation for my ORCA grant, I wrote a critical analysis comparing and contrasting questions of morality in two of Shakespeare’s famous works, The Merchant of Venice and The Tempest, for a literature class covering the works of William Shakespeare. That initial introduction to the moral complexities and ambiguities of Shakespeare’s works sparked my interest in Shakespearean studies and prompted me to expand that paper for my Honors Thesis. In the process, and with Dr. Siegfried’s help, I decided to make the most of my research by presenting my paper at the International Conference of Language, Literature, and Linguistics in …

Brain Imaging Of Event Related Potentials In Children With Language Impairment, Hillary Ann Benton Jun 2013

Brain Imaging Of Event Related Potentials In Children With Language Impairment, Hillary Ann Benton

Theses and Dissertations

Event related potentials (ERPs) may provide specific information about how particular aspects of language are processed by the brain over time. This study investigated the electrophysiology of language processing in two children with language impairment (LI) when compared to five typically developing children. The N400, P600, and the early left anterior negativity (ELAN) were analyzed after participants listened to linguistically correct, syntactically incorrect, and semantically incorrect sentences. Participants were instructed to indicate whether the sentences were correct or incorrect. Latency and amplitude of the ERP components were compared between the two groups of participants and sentence types. Results from the …

Talker-Specific Influences On Phonetic Boundaries And Internal Category Structure, Janice Ann Lomibao Jun 2013

Talker-Specific Influences On Phonetic Boundaries And Internal Category Structure, Janice Ann Lomibao

Master's Theses

Recent findings indicate that listeners are sensitive to talker differences in phonetic properties of speech, including voice-onset-time (VOT) in word-initial stop consonants. The current work extends our earlier research by examining the degree to which listeners adjust the initial mapping from acoustic signal to segmental representation on a talker-specific basis. Two groups of listeners are exposed to a talker producing “cane.” Word-initial VOTs are manipulated such that one group hears “cane” produced with short VOTs and the other group hears “cane” produced with relatively longer VOTs. Following training, listeners’ voicing boundary for a /g/-/k/ continuum was tested. In addition, listeners …

Perception And Production Of /L/-/R/ Sounds By Korean Learners Of English And German, Hyuna Kim, Dr. Laura Smith Jun 2013

Perception And Production Of /L/-/R/ Sounds By Korean Learners Of English And German, Hyuna Kim, Dr. Laura Smith

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Numerous articles have examined the difficulties Korean speakers have learning the English /l/ and /r/ sounds (e.g., Borden et al 1983; Smith, 2001; Han, 2002). Most Korean learners of English hear and produce no distinction between English /l/ and /r/, because no surface contrast exists in Korean between these two liquid sounds (Iverson & Sohn, 1994). The English retroflex /r/ does not exist in Korean; Korean only has a phoneme /l/ with three distinct allophones: an apical flap [ɾ] in the initial position (as in atom in English), a lateral [l] in the coda position, and a geminate [ll] in …

How Performative Are Ideophones In Pastaza Quechua?, Roseanna Hopper, Dr. Janis Nuckolls Jun 2013

How Performative Are Ideophones In Pastaza Quechua?, Roseanna Hopper, Dr. Janis Nuckolls

Journal of Undergraduate Research

With my ORCA grant, I set out to investigate the performance qualities of ideophones, a category of words marked by a specific speaking style in Ecuadorean Pastaza Quechua. I planned to use software to determine phonetic properties of the words and compare to the rest of speech. I also wanted to look at gesture as a part of the performance involved in using ideophones. I planned to gather data from acquaintances in Ecuador by recording stories, conversations and definitions of the words, which was a strategy used by Dingemanse while working with Siwu (2011). I used audio recordings for the …

Self-Shaping And National Identity In Transylvania, Nick Jones, Dr. Lance Larsen Jun 2013

Self-Shaping And National Identity In Transylvania, Nick Jones, Dr. Lance Larsen

Activity Determinants Of Helical Antimicrobial Peptides: A Large-Scale Computational Study, Yi He, Themis Lazaridis Jun 2013

Activity Determinants Of Helical Antimicrobial Peptides: A Large-Scale Computational Study, Yi He, Themis Lazaridis

Publications and Research

Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs), produced by a wide range of organisms, have attracted attention due to their potential use as novel antibiotics. The majority of these peptides are cationic and are thought to function by permeabilizing the bacterial membrane, either by making pores or by dissolving it (‘carpet’ model). A key hypothesis in the literature is that antimicrobial and hemolytic activity correlate with binding affinity to anionic and zwitterionic membranes, respectively. Here we test this hypothesis by using binding free energy data collected from the literature and theoretical binding energies calculated from implicit membrane models for 53 helical AMPs. We indeed …

Effects Of The Integrated Symple Readers Curriculum On Expressive Vocabulary Acquisition In Elementary Students With Developmental Disabilities, Loralene Edvalson Jun 2013

Effects Of The Integrated Symple Readers Curriculum On Expressive Vocabulary Acquisition In Elementary Students With Developmental Disabilities, Loralene Edvalson

Theses and Dissertations

Despite the emphasis society places on literacy, most students with developmental disabilities remain illiterate. One cause for this illiteracy may be that these students lack foundational language skills that contribute to being able to read. Research has shown that, among other contributions, multiple exposures across time increase students' abilities to acquire knowledge. The Symple Readers integrated curriculum plans for multiple exposures to novel picture vocabulary words by building them into all activities across the students' day and week. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of the Symple Readers integrated curriculum on expressive vocabulary development. During the …

Kenneth Burke As Educator: What His Theories Of Aesthetic Form And (Non-Symbolic) Motion/(Symbolic) Action Suggest For Teachers In The Literature Classroom, Tara Brock Boyce

Theses and Dissertations

Burke scholars oftentimes overlook Burke's fundamental role as educator and how his work can and should be applied to the classroom. This paper explores Burke's theoretical works and centers on two concepts important to developing rhetorical skills necessary for functioning and participating in a democratic society: his theory of aesthetic form and his distinction between motion and action. Specifically, this paper (1) clarifies these concepts and explains how they relate to each other and the emotional experience of literature, and (2) demonstrates how these concepts work together to imply a new method of practicing rhetorical criticism in the literature classroom …
