Media Literacy Education From Kindergarten To College: A Comparison Of How Media Literacy Is Addressed Across The Educational System, Hans C. Schmidt Sep 2013

Media Literacy Education From Kindergarten To College: A Comparison Of How Media Literacy Is Addressed Across The Educational System, Hans C. Schmidt

Journal of Media Literacy Education

This study of media literacy education at all levels of the educational system considered faculty perceptions of student media literacy competencies, the extent to which media literacy is addressed in class, and the extent to which faculty members consider media literacy education to be important. Data suggest that despite the research and policy focus on media literacy at the K-12 level, educators reported addressing media literacy competencies most frequently within higher education. Results also suggested that training and experience, not youth or digital nativity, are the factors that lead to an interest in teaching about media literacy among faculty.

Developing An Ethics Of Youth Media Production Using Media Literacy, Identity, & Modality, Damiana Gibbons Sep 2013

Developing An Ethics Of Youth Media Production Using Media Literacy, Identity, & Modality, Damiana Gibbons

Journal of Media Literacy Education

This critical, theoretical paper conceptualizes what determines an ethics for youth media production. Through discussions of media literacy, identity, and multimodality, I attempt to shift the question away from “What are the ethical ways in which youth use media?” toward the question “What are the ethics we have created as media literacy educators within which youth create media?” I assert that we must widen our lens to revision ethics as a complex interplay of definitions of media literacy, representations of youth identities, and understandings of modality as we move toward envisioning what constitutes an ethics of youth media production.

Framing The Future Of Fanfiction: How The New York Times’ Portrayal Of A Youth Media Subculture Influences Beliefs About Media Literacy Education, Drew Emanuel Berkowitz Sep 2013

Framing The Future Of Fanfiction: How The New York Times’ Portrayal Of A Youth Media Subculture Influences Beliefs About Media Literacy Education, Drew Emanuel Berkowitz

Journal of Media Literacy Education

This article discusses how online fanfiction communities, their members, and their literacy practices are portrayed within popular and news media discourses. Many media literacy scholars believe these youth media subcultures practice complex and sophisticated forms of “new media” literacy. However, when educators attempt to incorporate these practices into K-12 literacy programs, the public’s reactions may be heavily influenced by the media’s documented patterns of marginalizing, dismissing, and denouncing youth subcultures. This study employs frame and critical discourse analysis in order to examine how the news media’s portrayal of fanfiction shapes and reflects the beliefs of teachers, students, and parents.

The Practice Of Media Education: International Research On Six European Countries, Alberto Parola, Maria Ranieri Sep 2013

The Practice Of Media Education: International Research On Six European Countries, Alberto Parola, Maria Ranieri

Journal of Media Literacy Education

This paper presents and discusses the results of OnAir, a European project on Media Education funded by the European Commission. This two-year project aimed at collecting, documenting, and developing media education practices across Europe, especially in Belgium, Bulgaria, Italy, Lithuania, Poland, and Romania. In particular, the paper focuses on the role of documentation in improving teachers’ practical knowledge and highlights the challenging aspects at stake in this process. The analysis of collected data reveals that documentation of media education practices is often poor both in terms of information about instructional practices and in teacher reflection on their actions. Stronger collaboration …

Reflections On Global Developments In Media Literacy Education: Bridging Theory And Practice, Gianna Cappello, Damiano Felini, Renee Hobbs

Journal of Media Literacy Education

The field of media literacy education is maturing, as evidenced by the quality of presentations of research and practice shared at the 2010 World Summit on Children and Media in Karlstad. In this article, we offer our reflections on the opportunities and challenges faced by media literacy educators as we build our global community network, develop a shared theoretical framework that transcends culture and nationality, and return to consider foundational questions about the relationship between power and agency as new visions of digital literacy emerge as educators and creative media professionals explore the new capacities and limitations of the Internet …

Beyond The Gutenberg Parenthesis: Exploring New Paradigms In Media And Learning, Robert F. Kenny Sep 2013

Beyond The Gutenberg Parenthesis: Exploring New Paradigms In Media And Learning, Robert F. Kenny

Journal of Media Literacy Education

There are those who agree with Tom Pettitt that we are entering into a period where text based literacy is no longer the only measure of intelligence, nor is it the only form of valuable communications and knowledge acquisition for today’s media-centric children. As Prensky states, today’s youth speak ‘digital’ as their primary language. While his comments may be tempered by the fact that they are based on personal observation and correspondence with others, Prensky does make a point. In order to reach these children and stimulate their interest in reading and writing, it may be better to being by …

They’Ll Need This In College: Teacher Beliefs And The Construction Of The Secondary English Text, Lydia Brauer Sep 2013

They’Ll Need This In College: Teacher Beliefs And The Construction Of The Secondary English Text, Lydia Brauer

Journal of Media Literacy Education

Despite the complex and evolving ways in which contemporary texts are produced, mediated, circulated, and engaged, secondary English texts in the United States remain predominantly canonical and paper-based. Why such a resolutely stable classroom canon, and at the beginning of the twenty-first century a singular medium? While the answer to this question is no doubt far-reaching and complex, in situated classroom practice teacher beliefs are one important component of curriculum conceptualization and implementation. Belief is a uniquely resilient form of meaning making, and English teacher beliefs about the purposes of school and of their subject, and about the relevance and …

Design Puzzles As A Learning Platform For Morphology Design Research, Pedro Reissig, Cristhian Castro Arenas Sep 2013

Design Puzzles As A Learning Platform For Morphology Design Research, Pedro Reissig, Cristhian Castro Arenas

Learn X Design Conference Series

Design Puzzles open up a new field of visual and manual learning material for research in design morphology. The way Design Puzzles are instrumental as educational tools involves using them as research systems (frame works) in which spatial / visual problems are posed, requiring formulations of hypothesis as strategies for developing solution paths. The concept can be applied to a wide range of products, (physical and digital), for different ages (K-12 through University) and contexts (open ended play and/or guided classroom situations). Problem identification and approach skills as well as creative thinking strategies are brought into play as spatial / …

Ancestry Informative Markers Clarify The Regional Admixture Variation In The Costa Rican Population, Rebeca Campos-Sánchez, Henriette Raventós, Ramiro Barrantes Sep 2013

Ancestry Informative Markers Clarify The Regional Admixture Variation In The Costa Rican Population, Rebeca Campos-Sánchez, Henriette Raventós, Ramiro Barrantes

Human Biology Open Access Pre-Prints

The genetic structure of Costa Rica’s population is complex, both by region and by individual, due to the admixture process that started during the 15th century and historical events thereafter. Previous studies have been done mostly on Amerindian populations and the Central Valley inhabitants using various microsatellites and mtDNA markers. Here, we study for the first time a random sample from all regions of the country with AIMS (Ancestry Informative Markers) to address the individual and regional admixture proportions. A sample of 160 male individuals was screened for 78 AIMs customized in a GoldenGate platform from Illumina. We observed that …

Analysis Of Uniparental Lineages In Two Villages Of Santiago Del Estero, Argentina, Seat Of “Pueblos De Indios” In Colonial Times, Maia Pauro, Angelina García, Rodrigo Nores, Darío A. Demarchi

Human Biology Open Access Pre-Prints

Based on the analysis of the mitochondrial control region and seven biallelic markers of the Y Chromosome, we investigated the genetic composition of two rural populations of southern Santiago del Estero, Argentina, that were seats in colonial times of “pueblos de indios”, a colonial practice that consisted of concentrating the indigenous populations in organized and accessible settlements, to facilitate Christianizing and policing. We found the Native American Y chromosome haplogroup Q1a3a in only 11% (3/27) of the males. Haplogroup R, common in European populations, is the most frequent haplogroup in Santiago del Estero (55%). In contrast, the persistence of Native …

Isma`Kuwayyis: Software To Improve Listening Comprehension In Arabic Students, Jason White, Dr. Dilworth Parkinson Sep 2013

Isma`Kuwayyis: Software To Improve Listening Comprehension In Arabic Students, Jason White, Dr. Dilworth Parkinson

Journal of Undergraduate Research

In Arabic pedagogy (as in many languages), listening comprehension continues to be an area of frustration for students as well as teachers involved in second language acquisition. The greatest challenge is to allow a student access to authentic material with interaction. Obviously, the resources (natives) for such idealistic activities are very limited. The goal of this software development was to make authentic material available to students and allow for interaction (though somewhat limited), and to make the setup of such activities and materials easier for the professor. Computer-aided instruction cannot replace conversation or live interaction; however, it can and does …

Bilingual Quotations In Renaissance Poetry And The Relations Of Romance Languages, Treb Hw Winegar, Dr. Christopher Lund

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The study of bilingual quotations, made possible by this grant, has led me into a number of fascinating, related sidetracks which have been very little studied, especially since the waning of the French school of literature compareè. I have taken the time to study some of these sidetracks since they are relevant to the phenomenon I proposed to study. Others I have been able only to marvel at and reserve for future study.

Comparative Morphology Of The Hominin And African Ape Hyoid Bone, A Possible Marker Of The Evolution Of Speech, James Steele, Margaret Clegg, Sandra Martelli Sep 2013

Comparative Morphology Of The Hominin And African Ape Hyoid Bone, A Possible Marker Of The Evolution Of Speech, James Steele, Margaret Clegg, Sandra Martelli

Human Biology Open Access Pre-Prints

This study examines the morphology of the hyoid in three closely related species, Homo sapiens, Pan troglodytes and Gorilla gorilla. Differences and similarities between the hyoids of these species are characterised, and used to interpret the morphology and affinities of the Dikika A. afarensis, Kebara 2 Neanderthal, and other fossil hominin hyoid bones.

Humans and African apes are found to have distinct hyoid morphologies. In humans the maximum width across the distal tips of the articulated greater horns is usually slightly greater than the maximum length (distal greater horn tip to most anterior point of the hyoid body …

Genetic Variation Of X-Strs In The Wichí Population From Chaco Province, Argentina, Laura Angela Glesmann, Pablo Francisco Martina, Cecilia Inés Catanesi

Human Biology Open Access Pre-Prints

The Wichí people from Chaco province inhabit the region called Impenetrable Chaqueño, where the climatic conditions are extreme. Besides the scarce communication with the main urban centers, the cultural patterns of the Wichí cause these communities to live in certain degree of isolation. The effect of this situation is an increased genetic differentiation from other populations, as it was observed through autosomal and Y chromosome markers. However, the genetic variation of X chromosome has not been fully analyzed yet. The patterns of allele distribution of different markers of X chromosome can be highly informative in comparative studies, because its special …

A Naturalistic Study Of Young Children’S Strategies And Structures In Learning To Speak English As A Foreign Language, Rachel J. Berry, Dr. Trevor Mckee

Journal of Undergraduate Research

With the funds received, I traveled to Russia to collect data. I was there from January through June 1997, teaching English in a kindergarten. One child was videotaped each week for 25 minutes. These videos will be analyzed and results reported in an Honors thesis for Brigham Young University’s Honors Program to be completed by April 1998. A brief account of the history of the program, the methods used for teaching, and how research was conducted will be contained in this paper.

The Development Of The Epiclesis: Alexandrian Or Syrian?, Nathan Peter Chase Sep 2013

The Development Of The Epiclesis: Alexandrian Or Syrian?, Nathan Peter Chase

School of Theology and Seminary Graduate Papers/Theses

This paper explores the origins and development of the epiclesis in Eucharistic prayers. It begins by looking at the pneumatological developments around the time of the First Council of Nicaea and the First Council of Constantinople in the 4th century. It then turns to the work of influential scholars in the field to try and present a status quaestionis on the epiclesis which seeks to answer the questions: 1) How did it develop?, 2) Where did it develop?, and 3) Why did it develop? The paper ends by affirming the uncertainty of scholarship on the answers to these questions, while …

“I Love My Work But...” The Professionalization Of Early Childhood Education, Margaret Boyd Sep 2013

“I Love My Work But...” The Professionalization Of Early Childhood Education, Margaret Boyd

The Qualitative Report

There are two separate but related issues that have challenged advocates, researchers and practitioners in the field of early education and care work for decades : improving the quality of children’s programs and increasing the wages and benefits of the workers. The solution has been framed as a need for professionalizing the workforce – professional development training, higher education and enhanced skills. While seeking professional status is expected to improve the quality of childcare programs and worker compensation, the relationship between quality, compensation and professional development training has not been fully explored. Through in - depth interviews with 32 early …

Inadequate Access To Healthy Opportunities And Structural Violence: A Case Study Of Health Disparities Among Hispanics In Mclean County, Cecilia Montesdeoca

Senior Theses - Anthropology

Significant disproportionate human suffering is experienced by socially disadvantaged populations as a result of preventable difference in the burden of disease, injury, violence, and/or opportunities to achieve optimal health. Disparities in health refer to differences between two or more population groups in health outcomes and in the prevalence, incidence, or burden of disease, disability, injury, or death (CNHEOa 2013). Health disparities are discriminatory and are directly related to the historical and current unequal distribution of social, political, economic, and environmental resources (CDC 2007). While such disparities are more visible when comparing health status of whole countries, they are also embedded …
