Scripture Literacy: An Observation Of Behaviors Related To Scriptural Literacy In Children Ages 5-12, Melissa Lovelady Helselt, Dr. Dennis A. Wright
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The focus of my study was to answer two questions: “Is scriptural literacy different from conventional literacy?” and “What factors, if any, foster competent scripture comprehension and retention?” The study involved a series of tasks with children between the ages of 5 and 12 living in Wymount Terrace. To simplify my experiment, I used only Latter Day Saint children whose native language was English, and used only the Book of Mormon.

Correlating The Purdue Spatial Visualization Test With The Wonderlic Personnel Test For American Football Players, Karthik Sukumar
Department of Computer Graphics Technology Degree Theses
This research study aims to find the relationship between the scores for the Purdue Spatial Visualization test (PSVT) and the Wonderlic Personnel test (WPT) for American collegiate football players. Fifty-five collegiate football players took part in the study by attempting the PSVT and the WPT. The scores on these tests were compared to find if there existed a correlation between the scores on both these tests. The results showed that the scores on both these tests had a significant correlation with respect to each other. But, the group that took the WPT before the PSVT showed a lower correlation between …
Embracing A Productive Rhetorical Pragmatism: Teaching Writing As Democratic Deliberation, Jennifer Clifton
Embracing A Productive Rhetorical Pragmatism: Teaching Writing As Democratic Deliberation, Jennifer Clifton
Teaching/Writing: The Journal of Writing Teacher Education
Our current points of stasis in American politics make clear: we are facing a deep crisis of imagination in public life. Our (in)ability to imagine the interests and experiences of others limits not only how we understand domestic and global citizenship but also how we enact that citizenship with others. In talk and in practice, the inability to take seriously the interests and experiences of others leads Americans – in English Language Arts classrooms and in public life – to cast those who disagree as deeply flawed in character – unpatriotic, ungodly, lazy, irresponsible, or criminal.
In this article, I …

Student-Teachers' Comments' Type on Children's Writing: Practices and Perceptions of their Role as Writing Facilitators
Abstract
This study examines how student-teachers in the final stage of their teacher education program, perceive the role of feedback and how they write feedback on children's writing. Towards this end, student-teachers wrote compositions, answered a questionnaire, and wrote feedback on compositions written by 6th grade students. 10 student-teachers were also interviewed. Findings are that student-teachers perceive writing as a functional and technical process; they mainly edited the texts, they did not relate to the content, and were critical towards the expression of feelings …
Exploring Identity-Based Challenges To English Teachers’ Professional Growth, Heather C. Camp
Exploring Identity-Based Challenges To English Teachers’ Professional Growth, Heather C. Camp
Teaching/Writing: The Journal of Writing Teacher Education
This study explores identity-based challenges that can hinder secondary English teachers enrolled in Master’s degree programs from experiencing professional growth. It illustrates how identity conflicts can prevent teachers from integrating a disciplinary identity into their professional sense-of-self, thereby limiting the benefits they might gain from graduate coursework. In particular, the study suggests that dissonance between discourse norms and values, concerns about community allegiances, and assumptions about language, difficulty, and power can impede teachers from appropriating disciplinary discourse and hinder them from combining it with more familiar discourses that circulate in schools and shape teachers’ identities.

One of the things that the scientific researcher should pay attention to while roaming the corridors of scientific research and what it includes of books, research, articles and studies... is the means that would contribute to enriching academic research and other things, and the ways of its development, renewal and facilitation, according to a future vision, to be aware of the means and mechanisms surrounding it that enter into the development of the academic curriculum in terms of renewal and facilitation to give a cultural dimension that is compatible with the scientific development taking place in various fields of science …
Shifting Identities In A Globalising Metro Manila, Patrick Belin
Shifting Identities In A Globalising Metro Manila, Patrick Belin
University Honors Theses
This paper investigates the Philippine capital of Metro Manila, how it has been redeveloping as a "global city" over the past decade, and how the urban population has been negotiating the remarkable changes to their spatial, economic and sociocultural environment. The investigation assumes that a shift is occurring in the way that Filipinos identify with their country, moving from a national to a more international focus. Examined here are Metro Manila's premier global city site, Bonifacio Global City (BGC), public symbols of a Filipino nationalism, and the significant impact of the Philippine business process outsourcing (BPO) industry within the country's …
Students Of Color With Special Needs : An Analysis Of Exclusionary Disciplines In Massachusetts' Public Schools, Suzanne E. Rea
Students Of Color With Special Needs : An Analysis Of Exclusionary Disciplines In Massachusetts' Public Schools, Suzanne E. Rea
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
Grounded in zero tolerance policies in public school systems, this secondary-analysis of Massachusetts's statewide data is used to ascertain information about the rates of exclusionary disciplines for students of color with special needs for the 2010-2011 academic school year. Literature has shown that students of color, and students with special needs are at higher risk for being given more frequent exclusionary disciplines than white students, and students without special needs; however, studies of students of color with special needs have not yet been conducted. The data used in this analysis was collected by the U.S. Department of Education and made …

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Abstract: A proposal for a modest change in LCSH practice (and RDA when chapter 23 is written) to provide a Wikipedia-type disambiguation function for subject headings in library catalogs. Such a change is cost effective, scalable, familiar, and system-agnostic. Furthermore, it is necessary for fulfillment of our catalog objectives.

What Happens When The Body Matters? : An Exploration Of Corporeal Textualities In The Life And Work Of Two White South African Authors And Its Implications For Clinical Social Work Practice, Asher Pandjiris
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This project explores intergenerational transmission of trauma as evidenced in the body. Specifically, I focus attention on the somatic experiences of two white South African women, one historical/biographical and one fictional/contemporary, to elaborate the legacy of white colonial psychic disavowals in post-colonial South Africa. Using feminist and relational psychodynamic theories, this project addresses the alexithymia of the colonial predicament via an assertion that unwitnessed somatic distress as a result of disavowed trauma in individuals is potentially transmitted to subsequent generations and requires nuanced clinical attention. Additionally, this project argues that interrupting the intergenerational transmission of collective traumas such as colonialism …

Constructs Of Freedom And Identity: The Ethnogenesis Of The Jamaican Maroons And The Treaties Of 1739, Jessica Krug
Constructs Of Freedom And Identity: The Ethnogenesis Of The Jamaican Maroons And The Treaties Of 1739, Jessica Krug
PSU McNair Scholars Online Journal
This article is a study of the Maroons communities in eighteenth-century Jamaica. The Maroons did not end the institution of slavery, but they ended the condition of their own enslavement, and so made possible such actions as the successful revolt in Haiti, which, ultimately, collapsed racialized slavery in the New World. Understanding the ethnogenesis of the Jamaican Maroons provides an excellent opportunity for people to escape the narrow duality of victim-and-oppressor which most often shapes discussion of the history of slavery.

The Effects Of Gender On Language Perception In The Classroom, Rachel Hansen, Dr. Wendy Baker
The Effects Of Gender On Language Perception In The Classroom, Rachel Hansen, Dr. Wendy Baker
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The creation of adaptive learning environments is crucial for students’ success. Teachers often use written feedback to encourage improvement in their students’ work. The manner and content of feedback greatly affects how it is perceived (Brinko, 1993). Also, studies have shown for almost two decades that gender affects how student learn (Kolb, 1976). For example, female students perceive their learning environment more positively (den Brok, Fisher, Rickards & Bull, 2006) and are more likely to hold mastery over performance goals and to refrain from disruptive classroom behavior than are males. (Kenney-Benson, Pomerantz, Ryan & Patrick, 2006). Roberts (1991) argued that …
Spanish Learning And Its Influence On English Vocabulary, Solana Messerly, Dr. Jeffrey Turley
Spanish Learning And Its Influence On English Vocabulary, Solana Messerly, Dr. Jeffrey Turley
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The Spanish and English languages share many cognates because Latin greatly influenced both of them. Spanish is a neo-Latin language; although English is a Germanic language, many of its words have Latin origins. As a result, there are thousands of Latinate words in both languages, but their use is much less frequent in English than in Spanish. English Latinate words are so uncommon that speakers unconsciously use them to sound more intelligent and elegant. English Latinate words tend to have Spanish cognates. It is fascinating that although these cognates share the same meaning, they share neither the same frequency nor …

The Impact Of Vowel Mergers In The Acquisition Of German Vowels By Speakers Of Utah English, Andrew Whitlock, Laura Catharine Smith
Journal of Undergraduate Research
When learning a second language, non-native speakers are usually marked by speech patterns which are common to other learners from their same language background. This is because research has shown that learning to hear and produce sounds of a second language (L2) is strongly influenced by the speaker’s first language (L1).
Expressive Writing As An Adjunct To Talk Therapy : Considerations For A Creative Intervention For Depressive Disorders, Anna C. Hogeland
Expressive Writing As An Adjunct To Talk Therapy : Considerations For A Creative Intervention For Depressive Disorders, Anna C. Hogeland
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This theoretical thesis offers considerations for expressive writing as an adjunct to talk therapy, particularly for adults with depressive disorders and ruminative thoughts. This thesis asks: how do theories and empirical studies inform the use of expressive writing as an adjunct to talk therapy in adults with depressive disorders to decrease ruminations, and how can clinicians integrate this treatment intervention into practice? The primary aims of this thesis are to expand upon the limited knowledge about the therapeutic effects of expressive writing, to offer direction for further research, and to propose a model for the implementation of expressive writing into …
Social Workers Who Become Life Coaches : What Does The Social Work Field Have To Learn, Alexandra A. Jost
Social Workers Who Become Life Coaches : What Does The Social Work Field Have To Learn, Alexandra A. Jost
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This exploratory, qualitative study of social worker/coach practitioners elucidates themes about what motivates social workers to become coaches, how they integrate these roles in practice, and how this integration impacts their social work identity, adherence to professional ethics, and the types of clients they serve. The sample of 14 participants was recruited through professional listserves, social media, and a snowball technique. Key findings include that participants who integrated the role of coaching into their practices were able to connect more closely to a strengths-based and client-centered approach, feel more authentic and empowered, and make use of training in both disciplines …

It was interesting working on the translation of this script. The themes that came up in the story were many, and quite diverse. The problems of translation were no fewer. The first challenge was that of vocabulary. The second problem was one of cultural knowledge. The final problem was unfortunately of a technical nature.

A Media Literate Approach To Developing Diversity Education, Fernando Naiditch
Journal of Media Literacy Education
This article describes a classroom project developed in a course on diversity education that required pre-service teachers to use media literacy as a way to cross cultural borders and reach out to an online partner to exchange information and learn about different ways of relating to the world and interpreting cultural phenomena. Students kept a journal in which they recorded and reflected upon their experiences. The project resulted in an increased awareness of the potential of social networks and online learning platforms in helping students connect to different people, engage in cross-cultural communication and participate in new online communities.
Exploring Adolescents’ Multimodal Responses To The Kite Runner: Understanding How Students Use Digital Media For Academic Purposes, Robin Jocius
Journal of Media Literacy Education
This qualitative study explores how adolescent high school students in an AP English class used multiple forms of media (the Internet, digital video, slide show software, video editing tools, literary texts, and writing) to respond to and analyze a contemporary novel, The Kite Runner, by Khaled Hosseini. Using a multimodal analysis framework, the author explores the following question: How are students’ multimodal retellings with literary devices mediated by the text, the choice of compositional tool, and the use of different modes? The findings of this study can be used to shape our understanding of adolescents’ multimodal composition practices in academic …
