Informal Collateral Consequences, Wayne A. Logan Oct 2013

Informal Collateral Consequences, Wayne A. Logan

Scholarly Publications

This essay fills an important gap in the national discussion now taking place with regard to collateral consequences, the broad array of non-penal disabilities attaching to criminal convictions. In the wake of the Supreme Court’s landmark 2010 decision in Padilla v. Kentucky, efforts are now underway to inventory collateral consequences imposed by state, local, and federal law. Only when the full gamut of such consequences is known, law reformers urge, can criminal defendants understand the actual impact of their decision to plead guilty.

The increased concern over collateral consequences, while surely welcome and important, has however been lacking in …

An Epidemic Model Structured By The Time Since Last Infection, Jorge Alturo Alfaro Murillo Oct 2013

An Epidemic Model Structured By The Time Since Last Infection, Jorge Alturo Alfaro Murillo

Open Access Dissertations

Epidemiological models structured by time since infection have their origin in the seminal work of 1927 by Kermack and McKendrick. Compared to ordinary differential equations (ODE) models, they are able to capture differences in infectivity of the individuals in a more suitable manner. Their use declined in the second half of the 20th century, probably because the theory for ODE models is more robust, complete and has proved successful in providing insights and predictions for many epidemiological problems. Nevertheless, it is important to understand in what occasions the inclusion of time since infection may alter the outcomes in a significant …

Disk Diffusion Breakpoint Determination Using A Bayesian Nonparametric Variation Of The Errors-In-Variables Model, Glen Richard Depalma Oct 2013

Disk Diffusion Breakpoint Determination Using A Bayesian Nonparametric Variation Of The Errors-In-Variables Model, Glen Richard Depalma

Open Access Dissertations

Drug dilution (MIC) and disk diffusion (DIA) are the two most common antimicrobial susceptibility tests used by hospitals and clinics to determine an unknown pathogen's susceptibility to various antibiotics. Both tests use breakpoints to classify the pathogen as either susceptible, indeterminant, or resistant to each drug under consideration. While the determination of these drug-specific MIC classification breakpoints is straightforward, determination of comparable DIA breakpoints is not. It is this issue that motivates this research.

Traditionally, the error-rate bounded (ERB) method has been used to calibrate the two tests. This procedure involves determining DIA breakpoints which minimize the observed discrepancies between …

Informal Collateral Consequences, Wayne A. Logan Oct 2013

Informal Collateral Consequences, Wayne A. Logan

Washington Law Review

After a thirty-year punitive binge, the nation is in the process of awakening to the vast array of negative effects flowing from its draconian crime control policies. The shift is perhaps most evident in the realm of corrections, which since the early 1980s has experienced unprecedented population growth. Driven by a number of factors, not the least of which is the enormous human and financial cost of mass incarceration, policy makers are now shrinking prison and jail populations and pursuing cheaper non-brick-and-mortar social control options. This Essay examines another facet of the shift: increasing concern over collateral consequences, the many …

A student survey was conducted to determine perceptions of such things as differential treatment due to gender, level of preparedness for courses in the hard sciences, and gender performances of students in the sciences. Additionally, students’ grades of sixteen courses with a heavy hard science focus were analyzed by taking the percent of a letter grade sorted by male or female to determine if there was a significant gender difference in the final grades. Our objectives were to: 1) determine if the underrepresentation of women in some health-related jobs is due to discouragement of females to enter these professions or …

Detection Of Volatile Organic Compounds In Brucella Abortus- Seropositive Bison, Alona Bayn, Pauline Nol, Ulrike Tisch, Jack Rhyan, Christine K. Ellis, Hossam Haick

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Brucellosis is of great public health and economic importance worldwide. Detection of brucellosis currently relies on serologic testing of an antibody response to Brucella infection, which suffers from cross-sensitivities to other antibody responses. Here we present a new method for identifying Brucella exposure that is based on profiling volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in exhaled breath. Breath samples from Brucella-seropositive bison and controls were chemically analyzed and demonstrated statistically significant differences in the concentration profiles of five VOCs. A point-of-care device incorporating an array of nanomaterial-based sensors could identify VOC patterns indicative of Brucella exposure with excellent discriminative power, using …

Saudi Medical Journal

Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus MERS-CoV is a newly emerging respiratory virus with a high case fatality rate among identified cases. The virus is thought to cause a severe disease in patients with underlying comorbidities. The identification of asymptomatic patients and mild cases among family and healthcare worker contacts of confirmed cases indicates a wider spectrum of clinical manifestation of the disease. The majority of patients presented with fever 98%, fever with cough 83%, and shortness of breath 72%. Radiographic manifestations range from unilateral infiltrate 43%, to increased bronchovascular markings 17%, and diffuse reticulonodular pattern 4%. Our understanding of the …

Saudi Medical Journal

Basidiobolomycosis is a rare fungal infection caused by basidiobolus ranarum. The vast majority of gastrointestinal basidiobolomycosis cases were reported from tropical and subtropical regions. We report a Saudi pediatric patient with ileal basidiobolomycosis and initial clinical presentation mimicking acute appendicitis before being misdiagnosed as Crohn9s disease. Our case is the first to report effective treatment of pediatric gastrointestinal basidiobolomycosis using voriconazole mono-therapy. In addition, we present extensive review of pediatric gastrointestinal basidiobolomycosis in medical literature.

A Quadruplex Real-Time Pcr Assay For The Rapid Detection And Differentiation Of The Burkholderia Pseudomallei Complex: B. Mallei, B. Pseudomallei, And B. Thailandensis, Chinn-Woan Lowe

Theses and Dissertations

Methods for the rapid detection and differentiation of the Burkholderia pseudomallei complex comprising B. pseudomallei, B. mallei, and B. thailandensis, have been the topic of recent research due to the high degree of phenotypic and genotypic similarities of these species. B. pseudomallei and B. mallei are the causative agents of melioidosis and glanders, respectively. B. pseudomallei and B. mallei are recognized by the CDC as tier 1 select agents. Although B. thailandensis is generally avirulent in mammals, this species displays very similar phenotypic characteristics to that of B. pseudomallei. Optimal identification of these species remains problematic, …

Melanopsin, expressed in a subset of retinal ganglion cells, mediates behavioral adaptation to ambient light and other non-image forming photic responses. This has raised the possibility that pharmacological manipulation of melanopsin can modulate several CNS responses including photophobia, sleep, circadian rhythms and neuroendocrine function. Here we describe the identification of a potent synthetic melanopsin antagonist with in vivo activity. Novel sulfonamide compounds inhibiting melanopsin (opsinamides) compete with retinal binding to melanopsin and inhibit its function without affecting rod/cone mediated responses. In vivo administration of opsinamides to mice specifically and reversibly modified melanopsin-dependent light responses including the pupillary light reflex and …

Septic Pulmonary Embolism Secondary To Staphylococcus Aureus Septic Thrombophlebitis In A Pediatric Patient, Farah C. Thabet, Abdulrahman S. Alhejaili, Abdulrahman N. Alodayani Oct 2013

Septic Pulmonary Embolism Secondary To Staphylococcus Aureus Septic Thrombophlebitis In A Pediatric Patient, Farah C. Thabet, Abdulrahman S. Alhejaili, Abdulrahman N. Alodayani

Saudi Medical Journal

We present the clinical course of an 11-year-old child with septic pulmonary embolism secondary to community acquired methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) septic deep venous thrombosis. The aim is to emphasize the non-specific symptoms of septic pulmonary embolism in pediatrics, the frequent association with septic deep venous thrombosis and osteomyelitis, and to highlight that MRSA is the most frequently isolated organism. Pediatricians should consider septic pulmonary embolism in cases of septic deep venous thrombosis even in the absence of respiratory symptoms. The initial antibiotic management should include glycopeptides, as community acquired MRSA is increasingly the isolated organism in this disorder.

Learning From Teen Childbearing Experiences Of Close Friends: Evidence Using Miscarriages As A Natural Experiment, Olga Yakusheva, Jason Fletcher Oct 2013

Learning From Teen Childbearing Experiences Of Close Friends: Evidence Using Miscarriages As A Natural Experiment, Olga Yakusheva, Jason Fletcher

Economics Faculty Research and Publications

We examine peer effects in teen childbearing among close friends, using miscarriages as a natural experiment. We use 775 women from the core sample of Add Health who had a friend with a teen pregnancy. We find a sizable negative treatment effect – a close friend's teen birth is associated with a 6 percentage point reduction in the likelihood of own teen pregnancy and childbearing. There is evidence that this effect operates through a learning mechanism by changing beliefs regarding early childbearing. Effects of teen pregnancy prevention policies may be partially offset by reductions in the opportunities for social learning.

Disturbing The Peace: Salw In Post-Conflict Sudan And South Sudan, Kylin Mueller

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

According to the Small Arms Survey, there are an estimated 875 million small arms and light weapons (SALW) in circulation across the globe. All countries, as well as numerous non-state armed groups, have access to these types of weapons. There are both legal and illegal means of obtaining such weapons, and they can be used for a variety of purposes [1]. While SALW do have a range of legitimate uses, these are also the primary instruments of violence used in most internal and inter-communal conflict.[2] This study aims to address negative impacts that access to these types of …

Case Series And Literature Review Of Multiple Nodular Sarcoidosis., Hira Shahzad, Sameer Ur-Rehman, Kulsoom Fatima, Nadia Sharif, Ali Bin Sarwar Zubairi

Department of Medicine

Background: Nodular lung disease is a rare presentation of sarcoidosis. Radiologically it can present as multiple pulmonary masses or solitary lung nodule.

Case presentation: We report three cases of nodular sarcoidosis in young females of Asian origin who had initially presented with dry cough and worsening dyspnea non-responsive to initially administered antibiotics. Pulmonary nodules were discovered upon radiographic imaging in all three cases which raised concern for the possibility of neoplastic processes. Subsequent biopsies revealed granulomatous inflammation indicative of sarcoidosis. All cases responded very well to systemic corticosteroids.

Conclusion: Sarcoidosis may present as nodular infiltrates which alerts the treating physician …
