An Ecological Assessment Of Insect Diversity At Organic Central Coast Vegetable Farms On Two Spatial Scales, Emily Musgrave Jan 2013

An Ecological Assessment Of Insect Diversity At Organic Central Coast Vegetable Farms On Two Spatial Scales, Emily Musgrave

Master's Theses

Modern industrial agriculture is the principal cause of anthropogenic land use changes for terrestrial ecosystems. Approximately 40% of the planet's land surface, or half of the habitable area, is now composed of agricultural landscapes. The simplification and industrialization of agriculture are the biggest drivers of global biodiversity loss, especially on Californian's Central Coast. Diversified organic agriculture, however, may offer some refuge for non-crop species. In this study we analyzed insect and plant biodiversity on and adjacent to organic vegetable farms on the Central Coast of California at two spatial scales, the landscape-scale and a smaller within-farm scale. At the landscape-scale, …

Ddx5 Facilitates Hiv-1 Replication As A Cellular Co-Factor Of Rev., Xiuxia Zhou, Juan Luo, Lisa Mills, Shuangxin Wu, Ting Pan, Guannan Geng, Jim Zhang, Haihua Luo, Chao Liu, Hui Zhang

Department of Medicine Faculty Papers

HIV-1 Rev plays an important role in the late phase of HIV-1 replication, which facilitates export of unspliced viral mRNAs from the nucleus to cytoplasm in infected cells. Recent studies have shown that DDX1 and DDX3 are co-factors of Rev for the export of HIV-1 transcripts. In this report, we have demonstrated that DDX5 (p68), which is a multifunctional DEAD-box RNA helicase, functions as a new cellular co-factor of HIV-1 Rev. We found that DDX5 affects Rev function through the Rev-RRE axis and subsequently enhances HIV-1 replication. Confocal microscopy and co-immunoprecipitation analysis indicated that DDX5 binds to Rev and this …

Power And Purpose : U.S. Foreign Aid And Development, Jeremy L. Wells Jan 2013

Power And Purpose : U.S. Foreign Aid And Development, Jeremy L. Wells

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Foreign aid represents about 1 percent of the United States federal budget, but it also represents a significant portion of many recipient countries’ gross domestic products. Although there has been substantial interest in foreign aid among international political economy researchers over the last decade or so, there are still few if any answers to the most basic questions: who gets foreign aid, how much, and is it effective? Through a combination of cross-national analyses and a quantitative case study of Afghanistan during the Taliban insurgency of 2003–2009, this dissertation seeks to advance our understanding of the utility of foreign aid …

Yogurt Cultured Milk Powder As A Substitute For Yogurt Powder, Lijie Song Jan 2013

Yogurt Cultured Milk Powder As A Substitute For Yogurt Powder, Lijie Song

LSU Master's Theses

Commercial yogurt powder has to go through drying process which kills the yogurt culture, so the health benefit of the yogurt culture bacteria are lost. Also, upon reconstitution commercial yogurt powder does not taste like yogurt, it is sour and off flavored. The hypothesis of this study was that yogurt cultured milk powder would have better culture bacterial counts, better physico-chemical and sensory characteristics than commercial yogurt powder currently available. Commercial yogurt powder (CYP) was the control and yogurt cultured milk powder (YCMP) was the treatment. Freeze-dried yogurt starter culture (Lactobacillus bulgaricus and Streptococcus thermophilus at ratio 1:1) was added …

Fabrication And Characterization Of A Polymeric Nanofluidic Device For Dna Analysis, Jiahao Wu Jan 2013

Fabrication And Characterization Of A Polymeric Nanofluidic Device For Dna Analysis, Jiahao Wu

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The growing needs for cheaper and faster sequencing of long biopolymers such as DNA and RNA have prompted the development of new technologies. Among the novel techniques for analyzing these biopolymers, an approach using nanochannel based fluidic devices is attractive because it is a label-free, amplification-free, single-molecule method that can be scaled for high-throughput analysis. Despite recent demonstrations of nanochannel based fluidic devices for analyzing physical properties of such biopolymers, most of the devices have been fabricated in inorganic materials such as silicon, silicon nitride and glass using expensive high end nanofabrication techniques such as focused ion beam and electron …

Controversy Trend Detection In Social Media, Rajshekhar Vishwanath Chimmalgi Jan 2013

Controversy Trend Detection In Social Media, Rajshekhar Vishwanath Chimmalgi

LSU Master's Theses

In this research, we focus on the early prediction of whether topics are likely to generate significant controversy (in the form of social media such as comments, blogs, etc.). Controversy trend detection is important to companies, governments, national security agencies, and marketing groups because it can be used to identify which issues the public is having problems with and develop strategies to remedy them. For example, companies can monitor their press release to find out how the public is reacting and to decide if any additional public relations action is required, social media moderators can moderate discussions if the discussions …

Concentration And Detection Of Hepatitis A Virus And Its Indicator From Seawater, Jiemin Cormier Jan 2013

Concentration And Detection Of Hepatitis A Virus And Its Indicator From Seawater, Jiemin Cormier

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Hepatitis A virus (HAV) infection is the leading worldwide cause of acute viral hepatitis, and its outbreaks often occur from fecal contaminated shellfish. HAV is extremely stable in the environment and can survive 3~10 months in water. In addition, HAV can be bio-concentrated by shellfish by as much as 100 fold from fecal contaminated waters. Bacteriophage MS2 is used widely as a surrogate for HAV, and its presence has been proven to be a reliable indication of the presence of HAV. A rapid detection of viral contamination in water environments can prevent economic loss and can identify the source of …

Mathematical And Computer-Based Models For Optimizing Microwave Heating Processes Of Frozen Oysters, Jie Zhang Jan 2013

Mathematical And Computer-Based Models For Optimizing Microwave Heating Processes Of Frozen Oysters, Jie Zhang

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Consumers with full-time jobs prefer microwavable-frozen-meals for convenience when lack time to cook. Microwaves do not require a medium for heat transfer and provide quick heating even in low thermal conductivity foods, which does not occur in conventional heating. The main problem in utilizing microwave-heating for cooking is the non-uniform temperature distribution in foods which may result in insufficient lethality of microorganisms in some part. This non-uniformity can be due to a number of factors including composition and geometry of food. The objectives of this study were to develop a mathematical-model based on Maxwell¡¯s equations for predicting the temperature distribution …

Role Of Nod2/Rip2 Signaling In Acute Bacterial Pneumonia And Sepsis, Balamayooran Theivanthiran Jan 2013

Role Of Nod2/Rip2 Signaling In Acute Bacterial Pneumonia And Sepsis, Balamayooran Theivanthiran

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Bacterial pneumonia and sepsis are two important causes of mortality in the world. Emergence of multidrug resistant bacteria has necessitated the development of new treatment and/or prevention strategies to augment host immune defense. In this context, the innate host defense is critical in clearing pathogenic bacteria from the host. Early neutrophil recruitment is a critical step in a multistep requence leading to bacterial clearance. Pattern recognition receptors (PRRs) play a critical role in the innate immune system. Receptor interacting protein 2 (RIP-2) is an adaptor for the nod-like receptors (NLR) NOD1 and NOD2. Nucleotide oligomerisation domain 2 (NOD2) is an …

Exploring Potential Risk Factors Of Fetal Origins Of Diabetes: Maternal Stressors During Pregnancy And Birth Outcomes Among Women In A Hospital In The Municipality Of Caguas, Puerto Rico, Juan Pablo Arroyo Jan 2013

Exploring Potential Risk Factors Of Fetal Origins Of Diabetes: Maternal Stressors During Pregnancy And Birth Outcomes Among Women In A Hospital In The Municipality Of Caguas, Puerto Rico, Juan Pablo Arroyo

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Puerto Rico has the highest prevalence of type 2 diabetes, low birth-weight, and the second highest prevalence of preterm-birth in all the U.S. and its non-incorporated territories. These conditions are related. Birth-weight at both ends of the spectrum and preterm-birth are associated with an increased risk for developing type 2 diabetes and immune-inflammatory dysregulations. Maternal psychosocial stressors during pregnancy have also been recognized as potential risk factors for type 2 diabetes, and have been consistently associated with preterm-birth and low birth-weight across populations. Current evidence points toward epigenetic fetal metabolic-programming as the mechanism that underlies the increased risk for the …

Understanding Amphibian Decline: The Role Of Pesticides And The Pathogenic Chytrid Fungus On Amphibians And Aquatic Communities, Taegan A. Mcmahon

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Amphibians are the most threatened taxon on the planet. Declines have been associated with over-exploitation, habitat loss, pollution, and pathogenic diseases, but of these factors, pollution and disease have been relatively under-studied. Here, I investigated: 1) the impacts of commonly used pesticides on aquatic communities, 2) the effect of these pesticides on amphibian susceptibility to the pathogenic chytrid fungus, Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd), and 3) whether there are non-amphibian hosts of Bd and 4) how to best quantify the survival of Bd through ontogeny of the host.

In my first research chapter, I quantified the effects of environmentally relevant concentrations of …

The Post- 9/11 Aesthetic: Repositioning The Zombie Film In The Horror Genre, Alan Edward Green, Jr. Jan 2013

The Post- 9/11 Aesthetic: Repositioning The Zombie Film In The Horror Genre, Alan Edward Green, Jr.

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation explores a body of films produced after the events of 9/11, and while examining this specific point of departure, the author presents the argument on the vast cultural relevancy of the omnipresent zombie. These films are interrogative and complex, offering the viewing audience a rich tapestry of interwoven meanings. Furthermore, the author suggests that the zombie trope has, in fact, left the genre altogether, reinserted into a style of films he labels as "non-zombie appropriation." Chapter 1 introduces the zombie genre as both part of the larger horror genre aesthetic and as its' own legitimate subgenre. The zombie …

The Determinants Of Antiretroviral Therapy Adherence And The Relationship Of Healthcare Expenditures To Adherence Among Florida Medicaid-Insured Patients Diagnosed With Hiv Or Aids, Zachary Pruitt

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Research supports the clinical and societal benefits of antiretroviral treatment (ART) for people living with HIV or AIDS (PLWHA). However, factors associated with ART adherence and the relationship of ART adherence to total healthcare expenditures are not well understood.

The research data included Florida Medicaid claims for five years (July 2006 through June 2011). All subjects (n=514) were HIV-positive, adult, non-pregnant, and ART naïve for at least 12 months prior to their 24 month measurement period. Each subject was categorized as adherent (>90%#37;) or non-adherent (<90%#37;) based upon medication possession ratios (MPR). Total expenditures were payments Medicaid made to providers and pharmacies.

Objective 1 modeled the logit probability of a subject being non-adherent to ART …

Resistance And Tolerance To Trematode Parasites In Larval Anurans, Brittany Sears Jan 2013

Resistance And Tolerance To Trematode Parasites In Larval Anurans, Brittany Sears

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Nearly every species on the planet has at least one parasite, which, by definition, incurs a

cost in the host. Therefore, organisms must resist parasites - preventing or reducing infections -

or tolerate parasites - reducing the costs of infection - in order to maintain their fitness despite

the presence of parasites. Here, I investigated: 1) whether parasitic, larval trematodes (cercariae)

can detect the least resistant tadpole host species, 2) a hypothetical framework for how host life

history impacts the utilization of inflammation and thus, resistance and tolerance, 3) whether a

common anesthesia technique used in experimental infections immunocompromises tadpoles, …

Innate Immune Responses To Respiratory Syncytial Virus: Age-Associated Changes, Terianne Maiko Wong Jan 2013

Innate Immune Responses To Respiratory Syncytial Virus: Age-Associated Changes, Terianne Maiko Wong

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection causes ~64 million cases of respiratory disease and 200,000 deaths annually worldwide, yet there is no broadly effective prophylactic or treatment regimen. RSV can produce acute respiratory illness in patients of all ages but strikes the age extremes, infants and the elderly, with highest frequency presumably due to innate immune deficiencies. A higher morbidity and mortality has been reported for the elderly above 65 years of age, which has been attributed to immune senescence. Efforts to generate an effective vaccine have thus far been unsuccessful.

The innate immune system provides the first line of defense …

Histone Deacetylases As Targets For Melanoma Immunotherapy, David Michael Woods Jan 2013

Histone Deacetylases As Targets For Melanoma Immunotherapy, David Michael Woods

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Cancer represents the second leading cause of death in the United States. For many malignancies, currently available treatment options offer little long-lasting survival benefits to patients. However, recent studies have shown immunotherapeutic approaches to be an attractive strategy to cancer treatment. While many current immunotherapeutic strategies convey durable responses, such responses are only seen in a minority of patients. An increased understanding of the mechanisms governing tumor immunogenicity and the biology of immune responses is crucial to improving upon the efficacy of current and future cancer immunotherapies. Histone deacetylases (HDACs), enzymes classically associated with regulation of gene expression, have been …

Effects Of Speech Production Ability On A Measure Of Speech Perception Capacity In Young Children With Cochlear Implants And Their Articulation-Matched Peers, Victoria Beatriz Gonzalez Jan 2013

Effects Of Speech Production Ability On A Measure Of Speech Perception Capacity In Young Children With Cochlear Implants And Their Articulation-Matched Peers, Victoria Beatriz Gonzalez

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

With reductions in the age criterion for cochlear implantation, the need for age-appropriate measures of speech perception skills has increased. One recently developed tool that shows great promise for the clinical assessment of auditory speech perception capacity in young children with cochlear implants is the On-Line Imitative Test of Speech-Pattern Contrast Perception (OlimSpac). The OlimSpac requires a child to imitate nonword utterances by providing a verbal response. The child's perceptual abilities are inferred from the child's productions through having a listener, who is masked to the stimulus select the utterance produced by the child in an eight-alternative force-choice task. Although …

Development Of A Confirmatory Pcr Assay To Detect Onchocerca Volvulus In Pools Of Vector Black Flies, Alex Jeanne Talsma Jan 2013

Development Of A Confirmatory Pcr Assay To Detect Onchocerca Volvulus In Pools Of Vector Black Flies, Alex Jeanne Talsma

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Onchocerciasis, or river blindness, has historically represented one of the significant neglected tropical diseases on the planet in terms of socio-economic impact. The discovery that ivermectin was a safe and effective treatment for onchocerciasis, together with the decision of the manufacturer to donate the drug for the treatment of this disease became the basis for several large international programs to control and eventually eliminate the infection. These programs have managed to virtually eliminate transmission of the parasite causing Onchocerca volvulus from many foci in Africa and the Americas. Verifying that transmission has been halted requires sensitive and specific assays to …

Alopecia Areata: An Overview, Chaya Gestetner Jan 2013

Alopecia Areata: An Overview, Chaya Gestetner

The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences

This review seeks to find the most efficient treatment for alopecia areata. Alopecia is not very well understood as demonstrated by the unsatisfactory treatment options. The author reviewed many studies with different treatment options and concluded that treatment with Diphenylcyclopropenone (DPCP), a topical sensitizer, has the best results and that extensive research into the pathogenesis of alopecia areata is still necessary and may result in better treatment options for those afflicted with the disease.
