‘Maybe It Was Too Much To Expect In Those Days’: The Changing Lifestyles Of Barnard’S First Female Students, Jennifer Prevete Fcrh '12
The Fordham Undergraduate Research Journal
From 1890 to 1920 higher education witnessed a marked increase in female matriculation among select East Coast institutions. This paper explores the personal narratives of these pioneering women to illustrate how societal forces strongly influenced these women’s college experiences. Existing discourse emphasizes the difficulties female university students faced as they tried to pursue both careers and families. Scholars claim that an unusual number of college-educated women did not marry or married at a later age. This paper examines first-hand perspectives drawn from the Barnard College Archives to supplement current secondary data. Alumnae biographical questionnaires reveal how women reconciled opportunities with …

Mobile Sensor Data Mining, Jeff Lockhart Fcrh '13
Mobile Sensor Data Mining, Jeff Lockhart Fcrh '13
The Fordham Undergraduate Research Journal
At an ever increasing rate, the smartphones and other devices people carry with them in their everyday lives are packed with sensors and processing power. This provides an unprecedented opportunity to apply data mining techniques to people’s activities as they go about their daily lives, without changing their routine. The goal of the Wireless Sensor Data Mining (WISDM) Project is to explore the possibilities of data mining on these powerful mobile platforms.1 Data mining involves extracting knowledge from data using computer algorithms. A major sensor in these devices is the tri-axial accelerometer originally included for screen rotation and advanced gaming. …

In 2005, an Israeli man named Nick Rosen answered an ad in his local Tel Aviv newspaper searching for someone interested in selling a kidney. Through funding from the broker who placed the ad, Rosen was flown to New York and set up with a dialysis patient from Brooklyn. After Rosen and the dialysis patient passed a simple procedure for the screening of illegal organ sales by saying the two were old friends, the successful transplant surgery was performed at the esteemed Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York. The Brooklyn resident walked away never again needing to go on …
A Canyon Apart: Immigration Politics And Ethnic Identity In Arizona, Peter Morrissey Fcrh '11
A Canyon Apart: Immigration Politics And Ethnic Identity In Arizona, Peter Morrissey Fcrh '11
The Fordham Undergraduate Research Journal
This article examines the political and social forces surrounding the April 23, 2010 passage of Arizona’s stringent immigration enforcement measure, Senate Bill (S.B.) 1070, which empowered local law enforcement to demand proof of legal residency from any person suspected of being undocumented. A person’s failure to produce documentation would result in arrest, detention, investigation, and potentially deportation to his or her nation of origin. Through the law’s lens, the article explores the development of the social tension that followed Arizona’s explosive population growth, and examines how Arizona’s large Hispanic population has been unable to assert itself at the ballot box …

The Spontaneous Formation Of Selenium Nanoparticles On Gallic Acid Assemblies And Their Antioxidant Properties, Stacey Barnaby Fcrh '11, Nazmul Sarker Fcrh '13, Aaron Dowdell Fcrh '12, Ipsita Bannerjee
The Fordham Undergraduate Research Journal
Gallic acid (GA) is a naturally occurring plant phenol known for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. In this work, we probed the molecular self-assembly of GA for the development of GA based nanocomposites for potential device fabrications and enhanced antioxidant applications. We found that the formation of GA nanostructures was pH dependent. Further, we examined the interactions of selenite with GA and subsequently examined the biomimetic formation of selenium (Se) nanoparticles. We found that in the presence of selenite, the yield of nanofibers was significantly higher, and selenium nanoparticle coated nanofibers were formed. The ability of the nanocomposites to scavenge …

“Doing Business:” The Changing Shape Of Grass Roots Ngos In Haiti, Jessica Covell
Open Access Dissertations
This study provides an in-depth look at a NGO in Haiti that is attempting to generate some of its own revenue as opposed to relying solely on donor support. This case may prove to be a watershed and represent a new paradigm in development. The creation of micro-businesses and support for the state show signs of creating a more long term, sustainable solution to sanitation needs in Haiti. While the success or failure of this venture falls outside the scope of this study, it identifies emerging trends that may support the venture. The study concludes that while there is a …
The Relationship Between Nursing Documentation And Incidence Of Pressure Ulcers In Intensive Care Units, Dan Li
Open Access Dissertations
Pressure ulcer prevention requires consistent assessments and documentation. Documentation of pressure ulcers among providers is often inconsistent and can lead to a delay in proper treatment of pressure ulcers. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore the quality/comprehensiveness of nursing documentation of pressure ulcers and to investigate the relationship between nursing documentation and incidence of pressure ulcers in Intensive Care Units (ICUs). Sample: A convenience sample of ICU patients at the selected medical center comprised the study’s sample. All patients’ medical records of patients admitted to ICUs between the time periods of September 01, 2011 through September 30, …
Advocates Of The Peace, A Qualitative Study Of Former Politically Motivated Female Prisoners And Conflict Resolution In Northern Ireland, Mary Mccourt
Dissertations
The Good Friday Agreement is extensively recognised and acknowledged as a successful model of conflict resolution. Prior to its implementation and in the aftermath of the agreement, former politically motivated female prisoners have been instrumental in securing support for the agreement and also sustaining the agreement in the grassroots communities in Northern Ireland. This study explores the roles in which former politically motivated female prisoners have undertaken in micro levels of conflict resolution and presents a gendered perspective of conflict resolution. Findings within this study reveal the grassroots activities of participants, which is aligned with preventing violence within interface communities …

Integrating Human Omics Data To Prioritize Candidate Genes., Yong Chen, Xuebing Wu, Rui Jiang
Integrating Human Omics Data To Prioritize Candidate Genes., Yong Chen, Xuebing Wu, Rui Jiang
College of Science & Mathematics Departmental Research
BACKGROUND: The identification of genes involved in human complex diseases remains a great challenge in computational systems biology. Although methods have been developed to use disease phenotypic similarities with a protein-protein interaction network for the prioritization of candidate genes, other valuable omics data sources have been largely overlooked in these methods.
METHODS: With this understanding, we proposed a method called BRIDGE to prioritize candidate genes by integrating disease phenotypic similarities with such omics data as protein-protein interactions, gene sequence similarities, gene expression patterns, gene ontology annotations, and gene pathway memberships. BRIDGE utilizes a multiple regression model with lasso penalty to …

Dartmouth Scholarship
Understanding the coordination between humoral and cellular immune responses may be the key to developing protective vaccines, and because genetic studies of long-term HIV-1 nonprogressors have associated specific HLA-B alleles with spontaneous control of viral replication, this subject group presents an opportunity to investigate relationships between arms of the adaptive immune system. Given evidence suggesting that cellular immunity may play a role in viral suppression, we sought to determine whether and how the humoral immune response might vary among controllers. Significantly, Fc-mediated antibody effector functions have likewise been associated with durable viral control. In this study, we compared the effector …
