Addressing National Research Priorities In Improvement Science, Kathleen R. Stevens Dec 2013

Addressing National Research Priorities In Improvement Science, Kathleen R. Stevens

Biennial Convention (CONV)

Session presented on: Tuesday, November 19, 2013:

Healthcare experts, administrators, researchers, and clinicians across multiple disciplines are developing and testing new strategies to improve the safety and quality of patient care; however, national capacity to study improvement falls well behind the need to discover 'what works'. The study of complex healthcare service delivery and microsystems requires new skills in research methods, new partnerships across academic and clinical traditions, and multi-site research approaches to account for scale-up and spread of tested strategies. This symposium explores nurse-led nationally-funded achievements toward national advancing improvement science. The underlying foundations of the design of the …

From Impairment To Empowerment: Addressing Substance Use Disorder In The Nurse Profession, Karolyn Crowley, Carrie J. Morgan Dec 2013

From Impairment To Empowerment: Addressing Substance Use Disorder In The Nurse Profession, Karolyn Crowley, Carrie J. Morgan

Biennial Convention (CONV)

Special Session presented on: Monday, November 18, 2013:

Knowing that an estimated 1 in 10 nurses suffers from substance use disorder (SUD), makes this topic poignantly relevant for all nurse & related professionals. Deficient education, cultural stigma and avoidance set up nurses with SUDs for greater risk than recovery. Recognizing that addiction is a disease, it is a failure in the nurse profession to perceive nurses with SUDs as weaker or having moral shortcomings. This promotes ignorance and drives the disease deeper underground. It's time to get the conversation started: How do we become more informed and proactive in addressing …

Biennial Convention (CONV)

Poster presented on: Monday, November 18, 2013, Tuesday, November 19, 2013: Ethical debates can greatly increase student participation in class, enhance their oral and written communication skills and improve their critical thinking. In fact, research supports the need for a variety of teaching styles to be implemented into the classroom environment especially those that promote active learning. Debating is an innovative strategy that requires students to think critically as they weigh different views against evidenced-based practice literature. Classroom debates can encourage beginning nursing students to explore ethical issues upon entering the profession and potentially strengthen their role as patient advocates. …

Info Lit 2.0 Or Deja Vu?, Patricia Anne Iannuzzi Dec 2013

Info Lit 2.0 Or Deja Vu?, Patricia Anne Iannuzzi

Communications in Information Literacy

In 1999, ACRL convened a national task force to draft Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education. ACRL has recently launched a revision to those standards. The original standards were influential because they helped advance a national need in higher education at the time: a shift to outcomes based learning. Fourteen years later, information literacy stands alongside oral and written communication, critical thinking and ethical reasoning as learning outcomes broadly acknowledged as needing to be integrated, with disciplinary content, into the curriculum. This author believes that, in contrast to the first process, the current recommendations for revision are focused on …

Transforming Information Literacy In The Sciences Through The Lens Of E-Science, Elizabeth Berman Dec 2013

Transforming Information Literacy In The Sciences Through The Lens Of E-Science, Elizabeth Berman

Communications in Information Literacy

In 2011, the ACRL Science & Technology Section (STS) completed its five-year review of the Information Literacy Standards for Science and Engineering/Technology. Predicated by the evolving nature of scholarship and research in the sciences, the reviewing task force strongly recommended that the standards be revised. This paper considers the broad recommendations of the task force, using the framework of e-Science – team-based, data-driven science – to address areas of necessary transformation in information literacy: an advanced team-based model that crosses disciplinary boundaries; a recognition that individuals and groups not only consume information, but also produce it; and stronger interplay between …

Differential Effects Of Endocannabinoid Catabolic Inhibitors On Opioid Withdrawal In Mice, Thomas Gamage Dec 2013

Differential Effects Of Endocannabinoid Catabolic Inhibitors On Opioid Withdrawal In Mice, Thomas Gamage

Theses and Dissertations

The effects of cannabinoids in reducing somatic signs of opioid withdrawal have been known for some time. In morphine dependent rodents, opioid withdrawal following precipitation with the mu opioid antagonist naloxone elicits robust withdrawal behaviors including jumps, paw flutters, head shakes, diarrhea and weight loss. Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol has been shown to reduce this opioid withdrawal in mice via activation of the cannabinoid type-1 (CB1) receptor and recently it has been shown that inhibition of the catabolic enzymes for endocannabinoids also reduce somatic signs of opioid withdrawal. Specifically, inhibition the enzyme fatty acid amide hydrolase (FAAH), the catabolic enzyme for the endocannabinoid …

Listening To Primary Schools: Australian Health And Physical Education (Hpe)., Tj Lynch Dec 2013

Listening To Primary Schools: Australian Health And Physical Education (Hpe)., Tj Lynch

Plymouth Institute of Education

This research investigated Australian Government Primary School Principal’s perceptions of a University Pre-service Teacher Education course where the graduate teacher is qualified as a generalist primary classroom teacher and a Health and Physical Education specialist. Research suggests that the optimum time for children to learn and refine their motor skills and to be introduced to positive HPE experiences is during preschool and early primary school years. The research data was gathered using surveys completed by 138 government primary school principal participants in the state of Victoria, a large number considering the demanding role of school principal. There were two ethical …

Dose Dependent Effects Of Caffeine On Cognitive Performance And Neuronal Activation, Stephan Albrecht, Helen Morris, Michelle Vieyra Dec 2013

Dose Dependent Effects Of Caffeine On Cognitive Performance And Neuronal Activation, Stephan Albrecht, Helen Morris, Michelle Vieyra

Journal of the South Carolina Academy of Science

Many students assume that the more caffeine you drink, the better your cognitive performance. Over-consumption of caffeine has many negative effects, so if there are no dose related cognitive benefits to large amounts of caffeine, then college students should limit their intake. This study looked at whether ingesting a medium dose (200 mg) versus a lower dose (100 mg) of caffeine improved short term memory as measured by Flanker and n-back tests, compared to a control group. In addition, we looked at whether larger doses of caffeine produced a difference in neuronal activation during these tests as measured by functional …

Fourier Analysis Of Phase Resetting Curves Of Neural Oscillators, Robert A. Raidt, Sorinel A. Oprisan Dec 2013

Fourier Analysis Of Phase Resetting Curves Of Neural Oscillators, Robert A. Raidt, Sorinel A. Oprisan

Journal of the South Carolina Academy of Science

We investigated the impact of changes in biologically relevant control parameters, such as the shape of an external perturbation or the conductance values of an individual model neuron, on the shape of the phase resetting curve (PRC) of that neuron. For that purpose, PRCs were generated for groups of Morris-Lecar (ML) model neurons with different conductance values but similar firing periods (within 0.005ms) using external rectangular, triangular, or trapezoidal perturbations of varying areas. These PRCs were numerically described and analyzed as a series of coefficient values using a Fourier Discrete Sine Transform (DST). We found that changes in the shape …
