Rn-Bs Education: Facilitators And Barriers, Laura Marie Schwarz, Nancyruth Leibold

Biennial Convention (CONV)

Session presented on: Tuesday, November 19, 2013:

Purpose: A strong movement led by agencies invested in nursing and healthcare outcomes exists in the United States to increase the numbers of baccalaureate (BS) and higher degreed nurses and along with it a fervent advocacy for seamless academic progression. Outcomes are found to be more favorable with BS prepared RNs. Yet the current percent of associate degreed (AD) RNs who go on for BS and higher education is relatively low. What encourages some AD RNs to return for BS level education, while many more do not to return? This presentation aims to …

The Relationship Of Co-Morbidities And Self-Efficacy In Regimen Management, Jacqueline Dunbar-Jacob Dec 2013

The Relationship Of Co-Morbidities And Self-Efficacy In Regimen Management, Jacqueline Dunbar-Jacob

Biennial Convention (CONV)

Session presented on: Monday, November 18, 2013:

Translation of interventions may be influenced by individual or populations characteristics. In our program project grant we are examining factors which will impact the translation of behavioral interventions. One factor is the complexity of care the patient is managing reflected in the number of co-morbidities the patient has. This presentation examines the relationship of co-morbidities and self-efficacy across four populations and the potential mediating relationship of quality of life, depression, and number of medications prescribed. The sample consisted of 462 persons participating in one of four studies examining behavioral interventions to improve adherence …

This symposium begins a dialog on the curriculum, processes, and outcomes of NHPs. Programs may originate at the freshman or departmental level of the major. The significance of faculty mentoring will be discussed. A …

Transforming education systems will create a need to reconceptualize the role of the nurse educator. This session will discuss the driving forces for change, the educational preparation and retooling required of nurse educators to meet these challenges, and the disruptive leadership needed within nursing education to re-envision …

And With The Sound The Carols Drowned: Captives In Bleak December, John M. Rudy

Interpreting the Civil War: Connecting the Civil War to the American Public

Christmas was coming, and a knot of officers of the 87th Pennsylvania suddenly found their December a bit brighter. Nine boxes had been sent along to the officers, packed to the brim with, "all kinds of necessaries and delicacies, such as will be conducive to our comfort and health while in our present condition." And the soldiers were pleased.

Any soldier would be pleased to have a pair of warm socks, a stack of stationary or a can of preserved vegetables from home. But these men were doubly pleased.

The letter of gratitude they wrote to the Gettysburg Compiler was …

Network Interdependency Modeling For Risk Assessment On Built Infrastructure Systems, Vhance V. Valencia Dec 2013

Network Interdependency Modeling For Risk Assessment On Built Infrastructure Systems, Vhance V. Valencia

Theses and Dissertations

As modern infrastructures become more interconnected, the decision-making process becomes more difficult because of the increased complexity resulting from infrastructure interdependencies. Simulation and network modeling provide a way to understand system behavior as a result of interdependencies. One area within the asset management literature that is not well covered is infrastructure system decay and risks associated with that decay. This research presents an enhanced version of Haimes' input-output inoperability model (IIM) in the analysis of built infrastructure systems. Previous applications of the IIM characterized infrastructure at the national level utilizing large economic databases. This study develops a three-phased approach that …

Over seven years, the authors have partnered with nurses and other professionals to teach the MDGs through project based instruction in the USA, Brazil, Guatemala, India, Kenya, and Tanzania. Project based instruction (also known as project based learning or PBL) uses in-depth, rigorous real world projects to facilitate student learning. Hallmarks of PBL include hands-on design, problem solving, decision making, and …

Implementing Palliative Care Across The Life Span, Leisha Buller

Biennial Convention (CONV)

Session presented on: Saturday, November 16, 2013:

The palliative care service line at our 735 licensed bed facility recently received palliative care (PC) certification through TJC. Moving forward, our newly unified service line quickly learned that 2 diverse PC teams, adult PC and perinatal PC, must form an unlikely partnership. Our overarching goal for seeking certification is to provide patients in need with the augmented care PC services offers. We examined the percentage of deaths in the adult ICUs with and without PC services; examined the percentage of family conferences that established goals, were multidisciplinary, and had both elements; determined …

Refreshing Information Literacy: Learning From Recent British Information Literacy Models, Justine Martin Dec 2013

Refreshing Information Literacy: Learning From Recent British Information Literacy Models, Justine Martin

Communications in Information Literacy

Models play an important role in helping practitioners implement and promote information literacy. Over time models can lose relevance with the advances in technology, society, and learning theory. Practitioners and scholars often call for adaptations or transformations of these frameworks to articulate the learning needs in information literacy development. This study analyzes four recently published models from the United Kingdom. The initial findings were presented in a report for an ACRL taskforce reviewing the Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education. This article presents complementary, yet distinct findings from the same dataset that focus on reoccurring themes for information literacy …

The Cope On-Line Intervention For Prevention Of Depression And Anxiety In College Freshmen: Implications For Future Research And Clinical Practice, Bernadette Mazurek Melnyk

Biennial Convention (CONV)

Despite the high prevalence of depression and anxiety disorders in college students, there are few experimental studies that have tested preventive interventions for this high risk population. The purpose of this symposium is to describe the baseline and immediate post-intervention findings from a randomized controlled pilot trial that tested the efficacy of the COPE (Creating Opportunities for Parent Empowerment) Program, an on-line self-paced 7 session cognitive behavioral skills building intervention, on stress and anxiety/depressive symptoms in college freshmen enrolled in a required one credit survey course during their first semester of college. The second paper will describe the study's post-intervention …

Taking The Road Less Traveled: An Innovative Approach To The Clinical Nurse Leader Role, David H. James, Angela J. Jukkala Dec 2013

Taking The Road Less Traveled: An Innovative Approach To The Clinical Nurse Leader Role, David H. James, Angela J. Jukkala

Biennial Convention (CONV)

Session presented on: Monday, November 18, 2013:

In response to the growing concern over patient safety, quality, and health care outcomes, the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN), created the role of the Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL). CNL practice involves team development, microsystem assessment, process development, treatment, and ongoing evaluation. Implementing the role at the microsystem level has resulted in role ambiguity, increased cost, and lack of quantifiable measures of influence. By strategizing how to integrate the role in practice, nursing utilized two CNLs in a different manner than what was recommended by the AACN white paper. The purpose …

Transforming Education Through Reflection: Pedagogies In Action, Sara Horton-Deutsch

Biennial Convention (CONV)

Session presented on: Monday, November 18, 2013:

The challenges and opportunities in developing nurses for practice have never been greater. New quality and safety science, advances in knowledge and technology, increased patient involvement, market driven health care, and altered care settings where nurses practice mandate transformation in how we educate and prepare students for practice. A new vision for transforming education that prepares nurses with advanced knowledge, judgment, skills and ethical standards calls for teaching approaches that are strong in situated and experiential learning ( Benner et al, 2010). Educational strategies that engage students in deeper understanding of classroom material …
