The Tip Of The Tail Needle Affects The Rate Of Dna Delivery By Bacteriophage P22., Justin C Leavitt, Lasha Gogokhia, Eddie B Gilcrease, Anshul Bhardwaj, Gino Cingolani, Sherwood R Casjens

Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Faculty Papers

The P22-like bacteriophages have short tails. Their virions bind to their polysaccharide receptors through six trimeric tailspike proteins that surround the tail tip. These short tails also have a trimeric needle protein that extends beyond the tailspikes from the center of the tail tip, in a position that suggests that it should make first contact with the host's outer membrane during the infection process. The base of the needle serves as a plug that keeps the DNA in the virion, but role of the needle during adsorption and DNA injection is not well understood. Among the P22-like phages are needle …

Structural Implications For Selective Targeting Of Parps., Jamin D Steffen, Md, Jonathan Brody, Md, Roger S Armen, Md, John M Pascal, Md

Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Faculty Papers

Poly(ADP-ribose) polymerases (PARPs) are a family of enzymes that use NAD(+) as a substrate to synthesize polymers of ADP-ribose (PAR) as post-translational modifications of proteins. PARPs have important cellular roles that include preserving genomic integrity, telomere maintenance, transcriptional regulation, and cell fate determination. The diverse biological roles of PARPs have made them attractive therapeutic targets, which have fueled the pursuit of small molecule PARP inhibitors. The design of PARP inhibitors has matured over the past several years resulting in several lead candidates in clinical trials. PARP inhibitors are mainly used in clinical trials to treat cancer, particularly as sensitizing agents …

Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Faculty Papers

Phosphorylation is considered a key event in the signalling and regulation of the μ opioid receptor (MOPr). Here, we used mass spectroscopy to determine the phosphorylation status of the C-terminal tail of the rat MOPr expressed in human embryonic kidney 293 (HEK-293) cells. Under basal conditions, MOPr is phosphorylated on Ser(363) and Thr(370), while in the presence of morphine or [D-Ala2, NMe-Phe4, Gly-ol5]-enkephalin (DAMGO), the COOH terminus is phosphorylated at three additional residues, Ser(356) , Thr(357) and Ser(375). Using N-terminal glutathione S transferase (GST) fusion proteins of the cytoplasmic, C-terminal tail of MOPr and point mutations of the same, we …

Striking For The Guardians And Protectors Of The Mind: The Convention On The Rights Of Persons With Mental Disabilities And The Future Of Guardianship Law, Michael L. Perlin

Articles & Chapters

In many nations, entry of a guardianship order became the “civil death” of the person affected. It has been accurately characterized as “civil death” characterization because a person subjected to the measure is not only fully stripped of their legal capacity in all matters related to their finance and property, but is also deprived of, or severely restricted in, many other fundamental rights, [including] the right to vote, the right to consent or refuse medical treatment (including forced psychiatric treatment), freedom of association and the right to marry and have a family.

Guardianship is also frequently entered. In Hungary, for …

Contractor Prequalification Practices In Bangladesh, Mohammad Mofigul Islam Molla Jan 2013

Contractor Prequalification Practices In Bangladesh, Mohammad Mofigul Islam Molla

Construction Management and Engineering

Like many developing economies, the construction industry in Bangladesh is vital to its economic development and growth. However, the Bangladeshi construction industry is plagued by unethical practices, sub-standard construction work, and the inability of local contractors to partake in internationally funded (lucrative) contracts (as general contractors). A contractor prequalification process is proposed to address the problems facing the industry. In this work, an extensive literature review was used in combination with research surveys, statistical analyses of the literature and survey results, and the analytical hierarchy process to develop sets of factors and criteria pertinent to contractor prequalification/selection. A five-level framework …

The Veracity Of Self-Reported Criminal Records Among Ndsu Students, Kelsey Anne Keimig

Criminal Justice and Political Science

Campus safety and security are important concerns for colleges and universities. One way security is addressed is through utilization of self-report questions about criminal backgrounds during the admissions process. The current study evaluates this admissions policy by using a systematic random sample of 1,400 students to compare self-reported criminal backgrounds with criminal records listed in four online databases. Results indicate that two individuals within the sample failed to report their criminal backgrounds which included simple assault, burglary, theft, possession of controlled substance, and drug paraphernalia. While the failed reporting rate appears low, caution should be taken interpreting the results. A …

Informal Material Convergence Behavior And Emergency Management: Looking A Gift Horse In The Mouth, Aleczandre Nikoluas Cole-Corde Jan 2013

Informal Material Convergence Behavior And Emergency Management: Looking A Gift Horse In The Mouth, Aleczandre Nikoluas Cole-Corde

Emergency Management

Informal material convergence behavior is the spontaneous movement of unsolicited donations from donors to emergency management for disaster relief activities. This behavior is widely accepted as an appropriate social response after disasters. However, this behavior frequently results in excessive amounts of unsolicited donations which create numerous problems for emergency management. Most donors appear unaware of the issues associated with contributing unsolicited donations. The challenge is to reeducate the media and the public about what are considered the appropriate types of donations to contribute for disaster survivors. Informal material convergence behavior is a problem that can be resolved through social-psychological approaches. …

Coordination In Disaster Recovery: Implications For Policy And Practice, Sarah Jo Bundy Jan 2013

Coordination In Disaster Recovery: Implications For Policy And Practice, Sarah Jo Bundy

Emergency Management

Disaster scholarship and recent disaster policy in the United States have suggested that coordination of efforts in the disaster recovery process will allow impacted jurisdictions to maximize positive recovery outcomes. Yet it remains unclear exactly who should be, or is, coordinating disaster recovery at the local level. This study explored the role of county elected officials in disaster recovery in an attempt to understand what role these elected officials currently play in the recovery process—particularly as related to the coordination of recovery efforts. During the initial data collection process, the researcher discovered that the role of county elected officials in …

Local Nonprofit And Government Organization Conceptualizations Of Disaster Response Effectiveness, Nazgul Borkosheva Jan 2013

Local Nonprofit And Government Organization Conceptualizations Of Disaster Response Effectiveness, Nazgul Borkosheva

Emergency Management

This study attempted to explore how nonprofit and government organizations conceptualize disaster response effectiveness using an internet survey. Unfortunately, the data collected through this method was insufficient for meaningful data analysis, and, therefore this study was unable to generate significant findings with respect to its research question. Thus, rather than focusing on a presentation of results from data collection and interpreting the significance of those results, this thesis focuses on justification of the need for research on this topic, review of the literature that suggests it is likely that nonprofits and government perceive disaster response effectiveness differently, recounting of the …

Tattoo Subculture: Creating A Personal Identity In The Context Of Social Stigma, Naomi Joy Tabassum Jan 2013

Tattoo Subculture: Creating A Personal Identity In The Context Of Social Stigma, Naomi Joy Tabassum

Education

Tattooing is a growing and diversifying practice in the United States (Roberts, 2012), yet mainstream society maintains negative stigmas (Bell, 1999). Nevertheless, individuals attach personal meaning to tattooing (Atkinson, 2002; Kosut, 2000). There is little literature on the tattooed individual’s experience of social stigmatization and its impact on identity construction. This study employed a phenomenological approach to address this gap in the literature. The researcher used a semi-structured protocol to interview seven tattooed individuals (five men, two women; age range 25 - 38 years). Data analysis extracted three main themes: “identity project,” “cultural context,” and “tattoo timeline.” Findings suggest stigmas …

A Study About The Level Of A Teacher’S Content Knowledge, Pedagogical Content Knowledge, Instructional Practices, And Demographics And Their Effects On Students’ Literacy Achievement, Sue Luann Brunsberg

Education

It might be assumed that teachers’ content and pedagogical content knowledge affect student learning. However, most studies do not include observations of actual classroom instruction. This study provides empirical evidence that illustrates the significance of a teacher’s content knowledge; a teacher’s pedagogical content knowledge; instructional methods; a teacher’s demographic background; and what, if any, effects they have on students’ literacy achievement. This study was important because at this point in time, there was not any research that could be located that incorporated all these five areas. Teachers’ content knowledge, teachers’ pedagogical content knowledge, and teachers’ demographic data were obtained from …
