China’s food consumption patterns are changing as the population becomes wealthier and more urban. As the country ages, today’s adolescents will be tomorrow’s consumers. Few studies have focused on this important demographic. This study intended to investigate what might be influencing adolescent BMI by examining what adolescents are eating at home and away from home along with socioeconomic factors. An increase in a mother’s education was found to have a positive influence on BMI. Another section focuses on what adolescents consume at school compared to at home and also examines their parent’s perception of these school meals by developing an …

Novel Conducting Polymer Containing Composite Coatings For The Corrosion Protection Of Metal Alloys, Niteen Jadhav Jan 2013

Novel Conducting Polymer Containing Composite Coatings For The Corrosion Protection Of Metal Alloys, Niteen Jadhav

Coatings and Polymeric Materials

Corrosion is a persistent problem faced by manmade structures made up of metal alloys. Aluminum 2024-T3 is high strength, light weight alloy used in aerospace applications. It suffers from the problem of corrosion due to its composition. Cold rolled steel is employed in structural applications but undergoes severe corrosion when exposed to corrosive conditions. Coatings are one of the best avenues to protect metal alloys from the corrosion. Traditional coating systems such as barrier type coatings, metal rich coatings, and inhibitor containing coatings have their own drawbacks. Conducting polymers (CPs), such as polypyrrole (PPy) can be used for the corrosion …

An Electrically Small, Wireless Sensor Platform Designed For Arbitrary Orientation, Layne Albert Berge Jan 2013

An Electrically Small, Wireless Sensor Platform Designed For Arbitrary Orientation, Layne Albert Berge

Electrical and Computer Engineering

Wireless sensors are currently used for data collection where it is either too dangerous and/or menial for a human to collect the data or impractical to use wired devices. Current wireless sensors are either too expensive or have too short of a battery life in order to be useful. The wireless sensor platform developed in this work solves these issues by using the RFID communications protocol. This allows for low-power communications while using inexpensive hardware. The sensor has been tested and shown to exhibit a near-isotropic radiation pattern, allowing the placement orientation to be uncontrolled. The antenna design exhibits two …

Synthesis And Antioxidant, Anticancer, And Antimicrobial Activities Of Palmityl Ester Derivative Of Carnosic Acid, Asharani Prasad

Food Safety

Carnosic acid (CA) along with carnosol (CAR) is the strongest phenolic diterpene antioxidants (PDAs) present in rosemary plant. However, CA has low antioxidant activity in emulsion-type food system due to its polar nature. The identification and characterization of the anticancer and antimicrobial properties of natural products and their semisynthetic derivative such as that of CA and CAR have received significant interest over the years. The goals of this research were to synthesize lipophilic palmityl derivative (PE) of CA and study its antioxidant activity in bulk and emulsified corn oil. Anticancer properties against CCRF-CEM, K-562 and P388D1 leukemia cell lines and …

Interactions Between Ultraviolet Light And Soybean Aphid, Aphis Glycines Matsumura (Hemiptera: Aphididae), Steven Curtis Burdick

Environmental and Conservation Sciences

Global increases in ultraviolet (UV) radiation have led to greater interest in its current and potential effects on organisms, including insects and plants. Here we report the short-term effects of UV on soybean aphids (Aphis glycines Matsumura), a common phytophagous pest of soybeans. We examined how modified amounts of UV radiation affect soybean aphids by focusing on changes in 1) soybean aphid densities and 2) within plant distribution. In a laboratory experiment artificially adding UV decreased soybean densities compared to a low UV control. In a field experiment blocking UV had minimal effects on soybean aphid densities. Further observations suggest …

Digital image processing techniques were used to detect the changes of arboreal ecosystems using ArcGIS …

Effect Of Larval Diet On Endogenous Carbon Reproductive Resources Of Fifth Instars And Adult Females Of The Moth, Heliothis Virescens, Smita Dutta Suman Jan 2013

Effect Of Larval Diet On Endogenous Carbon Reproductive Resources Of Fifth Instars And Adult Females Of The Moth, Heliothis Virescens, Smita Dutta Suman

Entomology

Mostly adult Lepidoptera feed on plant nectar. That is, adults can only contribute to carbon, and not nitrogen, acquisition. The moth Heliothis virescens were used to explore the hypothesis that larval nutrition influences various adult carbon pools and that these, in turn, may affect pheromone production quantitatively. H. virescens larvae were reared on diets differing in carbohydrate, fat or protein content and resulting 5 th instars and adults were analyzed for carbon pools, hemolymph trehalose concentration (HTC) and lipid content. Across all the diet treatments, changes in carbohydrate content affected carbon pool the most. In particular, for insects reared on …

Sharing The Risks And Rewards Of Economic Migration, Anu Bradford Jan 2013

Sharing The Risks And Rewards Of Economic Migration, Anu Bradford

Faculty Scholarship

International cooperation on economic migration has been difficult to achieve. The interests of emigration countries ("source countries") and immigration countries ("destination countries') seem impossible to align. These countries disagree on who should migrate: source countries resist migration that leads to a brain drain, while destination countries welcome these very migrants given that they are likely to be the most productive citizens and the least likely to become fiscal burdens on the destination country. In addition, destination countries resist migration that leads to domestic unemployment through labor replacement. As a result, international economic migration remains restricted at a substantial cost to …

"Children Are Different": Constitutional Values And Justice Policy, Elizabeth S. Scott Jan 2013

"Children Are Different": Constitutional Values And Justice Policy, Elizabeth S. Scott

Faculty Scholarship

This essay explores the importance for Eighth Amendment jurisprudence and for juvenile crime regulation of Miller v. Alabama (2012) and two earlier Supreme Court opinions rejecting harsh sentences for juveniles. It argues that the Court has broken new ground in defining juveniles as a category of offenders who are subject to special Eighth Amendment protections. In Miller and in Graham v. Florida (2010) particularly, the Court has applied to juveniles' non-capital sentences the rigorous proportionality review that, for adults, has been reserved for death sentences. The essay then turns to the implications of the opinions for juvenile crime policy, arguing …

Estimating The Effects Of Urbanization On Carbon Emissions: Evidence In The Philippines, Jerome Abesamis, Jumel Carlo Campos, Cecille Castelle

Angelo King Institute for Economic and Business Studies (AKI)

Urbanization, or the social and economic modernization of metropolitan cities (Poumanyvong & Kaveko, 2010), has obtained unprecedented growth. As an inevitable phase of globalization, it has fuelled society’s consumption patterns, alongside incessant technological development. Mass production and industrialization, the primary thrusts of the global market, require consumption of non-renewable resources arising from the increase in energy usage. These centers of production are concentrated in urban, highly populated areas. This phase of progress, however, comes at the expense of environmental quality. Levels of carbon emissions are concentrated in areas with high population density. This hampers the natural flow of the ecosystem …
