Benefit Corporations: A Challenge In Corporate Governance, Mark J. Loewenstein
Benefit Corporations: A Challenge In Corporate Governance, Mark J. Loewenstein
Publications
Benefit corporations are a new form of business entity that is rapidly being adopted around the country. Though the legislation varies from jurisdiction to jurisdiction, most statutes are based on a model proposed and promoted by B Lab, itself a nonprofit corporation. The essence of these statutes is that, in making business judgments, the directors of a benefit corporation must consider the impact of their decisions on the environment and society. The model legislation, though, may create serious governance issues for the directors of benefit corporations that operate under these laws. This article analyzes the model legislation and identifies its …

This review of Leo Katz's book, Why the Law is So Perverse, addresses three questions. First, does Katz draw the appropriate normative conclusions about legal perversities based on their connections to social choice theory? In other words, what are the legal ethics and professionalism implications of his book? Second, how does each of the legal perversities in the book follow from a particular social choice theory result? In other words, what is the precise theoretical connection between each of the legal perversities discussed and an impossibility theorem in social choice theory? Third, can we reinterpret our understanding of the …

Physical activity is an effective way for the prevention of diseases and serves as a cost-effective strategy to improve public health across the population. There are strong evidences linking increased regular physical activity with better health. It is evident that individuals who are able to maintain a regular routine of activity long enough or more vigorously in intensity are likely to benefit more and have less risk of death. Despite the recognized psychological, physical and social benefits of regular exercise, physical inactivity continues to be extensive. The proportions of the Malaysian population who participate in regular and sustainable physical activity …

Predictive Pattern Discovery In Dynamic Data Systems, Wenjing Zhang
Predictive Pattern Discovery In Dynamic Data Systems, Wenjing Zhang
Dissertations (1934 -)
This dissertation presents novel methods for analyzing nonlinear time series in dynamic systems. The purpose of the newly developed methods is to address the event prediction problem through modeling of predictive patterns. Firstly, a novel categorization mechanism is introduced to characterize different underlying states in the system. A new hybrid method was developed utilizing both generative and discriminative models to address the event prediction problem through optimization in multivariate systems.
Secondly, in addition to modeling temporal dynamics, a Bayesian approach is employed to model the first-order Markov behavior in the multivariate data sequences. Experimental evaluations demonstrated superior performance over conventional …

Patient empowerment has been advocated as a way to engage patients in self-management of chronic illnesses in emerging patient-centered models for healthcare improvement. The majority of research on patient empowerment has studied empowerment as an outcome in outpatient settings, with little attention to provider processes used to empower patients during a hospitalization. Post-operative patients with life-threatening chronic illnesses face multiple illness-related transitions associated with the recovery from their surgery and taking on the role of managing their …

Doing Impacting Being: A Case Study Of Service Learning As A Method Of Faith And Learning Integration, Calvin G. Roso
Doing Impacting Being: A Case Study Of Service Learning As A Method Of Faith And Learning Integration, Calvin G. Roso
International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal
C. S. Lewis argues that Christians become more like Christ by practicing to be something they are not: “Pretense leads up to the real thing . . . very often the only way to get a quality in reality is to start behaving as if you had it already” (Lewis, 1952, p. 160). Likewise, educators indicate that when students practice and apply their learning “true understanding is demonstrated” (Tomlinson & McTighe, 2006, p. 67). Even Jesus, the Master Teacher, modeled experiential integration in training His disciples (Matthew 10:1-15; Luke 9:1-6; Mark 6:7-13). Doing impacts being—what we do and experience shapes …

Feasibility Of Seismic Monitoring To Identify Avalanche Activity: Snoqualmie Pass, Wa, Kathryn Johnston
Feasibility Of Seismic Monitoring To Identify Avalanche Activity: Snoqualmie Pass, Wa, Kathryn Johnston
All Master's Theses
Avalanches across the Interstate-90 corridor over Snoqualmie Pass, in Washington State, are a concern for winter travelers and backcountry recreation. The temporary closure of the interstate for avalanche mitigation work also affects commerce by delaying transportation of merchandise. The study of seismic signals associated with snow avalanches could allow for greater understanding of avalanche properties, while remote sensing of avalanche activity could help established avalanche control programs and regional avalanche centers with forecasting and mitigation efforts. Two seismic stations were installed near the Alpental ski area on Snoqualmie Pass and recorded seismic activity throughout the winters of 2009-2010 and 2010-2011. …

“Culling The Herd”: Eugenics And The Conservation Movement In The United States, 1900–1940, Garland E. Allen
Biology Faculty Research
While from a late twentieth- and early twenty-first century perspective, the ideologies of eugenics (controlled reproduction to eliminate the genetically unfit and promote the reproduction of the genetically fit) and environmental conservation and preservation, may seem incompatible, they were promoted simultaneously by a number of figures in the progressive era in the decades between 1900 and 1950. Common to the two movements were the desire to preserve the ‘‘best’’ in both the germ plasm of the human population and natural environments (including not only natural resources, but also undisturbed nature preserves such as state and national parks and forests). In …
