Modern power systems worldwide are facing a rising appeal for the upgrade to a highly intelligent generation of electricity networks commonly known as the Smart Grid. Advanced monitoring and control systems like Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition (SCADA) and Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) systems have been widely deployed and management based on them provides more exible and achievable optimal control of power generation, transmission and distribution. However, the growing integration of power system with communication networks also brings increasing challenges to the security of the modern power grid, from both cyber and physical space. Malicious attackers can take advantage of …

Visual Images And The Rhetoric Of Environmental Advocacy, Collin Syfert Jan 2013

Visual Images And The Rhetoric Of Environmental Advocacy, Collin Syfert

Open Access Master's Theses

This project investigates visual representations of staged environmental protests that are produced and distributed by the environmental-activist organization Greenpeace, and broadcast through international news media. By examining eight images taken from four separate Greenpeace image campaigns, this thesis shows how these demonstrations generally, and images of them more specifically, draw attention to climate change issues through their rhetorical capacity to challenge dominant cultural values that have enabled climate-changing human activities to persist. As such, the rhetorical capacity of these images further demonstrates Kevin DeLuca’s image event theory, which suggests how visual demonstrations can be designed to attract mass media attention …

Examining Trends In Adolescents' Future Orientation Across 33 Years, Indrawati Liauw Jan 2013

Examining Trends In Adolescents' Future Orientation Across 33 Years, Indrawati Liauw

Open Access Master's Theses

The purpose of this study was to examine the future orientation of adolescents from 1977 to 2010. This study looked at the trends over the 33-year period in: (1) the amount of worry high school seniors have about national problems; (2) the value they place on planning for the future; and (3) their material aspirations for the future. Drawing from the life course theory that social and historical contexts influence the decisions and roles that individuals undertake, it was hypothesized that the future orientation of high school seniors would vary with the socio-historical influences such as global and/or national events …

Application Of The Transtheoretical Model To Behavioral Health Professionals' Readiness To Practice Integrated Primary Care, Cerissa Blaney Jan 2013

Application Of The Transtheoretical Model To Behavioral Health Professionals' Readiness To Practice Integrated Primary Care, Cerissa Blaney

Open Access Dissertations

Integrated primary care (IPC) has received substantial support with its demonstrated ability to improve access to care, quality of care and health outcomes. Although the benefits of IPC are clear, the integration process has met barriers. One barrier is limited understanding of behavioral health professionals’ (BHP) attitudes towards IPC. Better understanding could allow us to improve BHP training and motivation for IPC practice. This study aimed to develop Transtheoretical Model (TTM) measures to assess BHP attitudes toward and readiness to practice IPC using split-half cross-validation procedures. The sample consisted of 319 licensed and practicing BHPs with a stage distribution of …

The Impact Of Predator-Prey Relationships On The Formation Of Harmful Algal Blooms In Heterosigma Akashiwo, Elizabeth L. Harvey

Open Access Dissertations

Heterotrophic protists are the primary grazers of phytoplankton in the marine environment, and changes in the rates of consumption will influence phytoplankton abundance, community composition, and ecological function. The objective of this research was to investigate the influence of predators on the formation and promotion of harmful algal blooms (HABs), specifically blooms of the toxic raphidophyte alga, Heterosigma akashiwo. To observe microscopic predator-prey interactions and their macroscopic distributions, video and image analysis were used to simultaneously quantify population distributions and individual 3D movements of both protistan predators and prey cells in laboratory tanks with realistic salinity structures. In behavioral experiments, …

Managing Conflict And Compatibility Of Use: A Case Study Of Stakeholder Groups Associated With Blue Crabs (Callinectes Sapidus) In Coastal North Carolina, Leigh C. Habegger Jan 2013

Managing Conflict And Compatibility Of Use: A Case Study Of Stakeholder Groups Associated With Blue Crabs (Callinectes Sapidus) In Coastal North Carolina, Leigh C. Habegger

Open Access Master's Theses

Coastal zone management has become an increasingly important topic as coastal populations continue to grow and the numerous ocean and coastal uses associated with coastal development exert tremendous pressure on the marine environment and its resources. Marine spatial planning (MSP) is a process that can help direct when and where multiple coastal activities take place, and can also make areas of conflicting and compatible uses more visible to fisheries and coastal managers.

Stakeholders in North Carolina are concerned about the sustainability of the economically and culturally significant blue crab fishery after significantly reduced landings during the late 1990s and early …

Factors Of Different Management Of Northern Atlantic Bluefin Tuna (Thunnus Thynnus), Patrick Samuel Jan 2013

Factors Of Different Management Of Northern Atlantic Bluefin Tuna (Thunnus Thynnus), Patrick Samuel

Open Access Master's Theses

The International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT) is a regional fisheries management organization (RFMO) comprised of over fifty cooperating states and fishing entities. It manages Northern Atlantic bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus) in the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea. Due to overfishing and ineffective management, the stock abundance of this species has declined to about thirty percent of its unfished biomass in the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea. Publications point to this poor stock status as evidence of a fisheries management failure; it is commonly repeated that ICCAT’s mismanagement of the resource amounts to an international …

A Difference In Perspective: A Comparison Of Ecosystem And Single-Species Focused Fisheries Management, Catherine M. Foley Jan 2013

A Difference In Perspective: A Comparison Of Ecosystem And Single-Species Focused Fisheries Management, Catherine M. Foley

Open Access Master's Theses

Currently, most fisheries management bodies utilize a narrow, single-species focus in decision-making processes. These methodologies, however, fail to recognize the interrelated nature of ecosystems, and as such are unable to produce realistic and valid estimates of sustainable yield. One proposed method of integrating ecosystem data into the decision-making process of fisheries management involves quantifying ecosystem diversity. This study evaluates historical fisheries management success in terms of changes in biological diversity and evaluates the potential use of length and species diversity measurements to aid managers in understanding fishery-induced community changes. To evaluate these relationships, a comparison of ecological and management outcomes …

Tuning Intermolecular Interactions To Enhance Solid-State Nanopore Force Spectroscopy, Elaine Foun Jan 2013

Tuning Intermolecular Interactions To Enhance Solid-State Nanopore Force Spectroscopy, Elaine Foun

Open Access Master's Theses

Nanopores, nanometer sized holes in membranes, have recently come into prominence as tools for single molecule sensing. A technique called nanopore force spectroscopy uses the nanopore to probe energy landscapes between molecules. With the development of this technique, it will be possible for molecular recognition in complex fluids, such as blood. However, before that can be possible, solid-state nanopores, commonly fabricated in silicon nitride membranes, and having very confined sizes and charged surfaces, need to be optimized to minimize unwanted interactions between solution-phase molecules and the surface. DNA, for example, a crucial part of nanopore force spectroscopy, frequently sticks to …

In Chapter 1, we introduce the background information on the environmental fate, toxicological effects, and application of AgNP and review the current knowledge …

Attachment And Self Regulation In Preschool Age Children, Kate M. Pearson Jan 2013

Attachment And Self Regulation In Preschool Age Children, Kate M. Pearson

Open Access Master's Theses

Literature supports a relationship between attachment style and emotional regulation (Panfile & Laible, 2012; Waters, Virmani, Thompson, Meyer, & Jochem, 2010; Mikulincer, & Shaver, 2005; Cassidy, 1994). Research also indicates that emotional regulation is linked to cognitive and behavioral regulation (Garner & Waajid, 2012; Denham, Bassett, Way, Mincic, Zinsser, & Graling, 2012; Tarullo, Obradovic, & Gunnar, 2009; Ramani, Brownell, & Campbell, 2010; Raver, Garner, & Smith-Donald, 2007). However, existing literature surrounding attachment theory and various components of self-regulation is limited. The paucity of information available and lack of consensus about the definition of cognitive and behavioral regulation make them difficult …

An In Vitro Study On The Non-Enzymatic Glycation Of Melamine And Serum Albumin By Reducing Sugars, Weixi Liu

Open Access Dissertations

Glycation is a non-enzymatic reaction with reactants including a reducing sugar and a free amino containing molecule such as protein, amino acids, DNA, RNA and lipids. In the initial phase of glycation, the carbonyl group of the reducing carbohydrate condenses with the free amino groups on the target biomolecule to form reversible glycosylamines, which are then converted to more stable Amadori products. Once formed, these Amadori products can with time undergo dehydration, cyclization, oxidation, and rearrangement to form a polymorphic group of compounds collectively referred to as Advanced Glycation Endproducts (AGEs). The accumulation of AGEs in vivo has been implicated …
