Sickle Cell Disease Erythrocyte Stiffness And Cytoadhesion Investigated Via Atomic Force Microscopy, Jamie L. Maciaszek Dec 2013

Sickle Cell Disease Erythrocyte Stiffness And Cytoadhesion Investigated Via Atomic Force Microscopy, Jamie L. Maciaszek

Doctoral Dissertations

The biomechanical properties of red blood cells (RBCs), including increased stiffness and abnormal cytoadherence, are integral components in the cascade of events resulting to vasoocclusive episodes (VOEs) in sickle cell disease (SCD). VOEs are the main cause of morbidity in SCD and sickle cell trait (SCT). Using experimental techniques based on atomic force microscopy (AFM), we studied the stiffness and adhesion of RBCs from SCD patients and from subjects with SCT. We found that SCD and SCT RBCs are three-fold stiffer than normal RBCs. Further, a ten-fold increase in the stiffness of sickled RBCs was measured upon deoxygenation. In an …

The Accessibility Of In-Prison Programming For Female Offenders And Their Gender Specific Needs, Kelli Reynolds Dec 2013

The Accessibility Of In-Prison Programming For Female Offenders And Their Gender Specific Needs, Kelli Reynolds

Honors Program Theses and Projects

With the rates of female incarcerations on the rise, it is important that we examine programs available to female offenders in prison, and programs available to female offenders as they exit prison and re-enter society. Programs developed specifically for these females to fit their needs are important in their rehabilitation progress and should help in keeping their recidivism rates low. I expect to find a disconnect between the needs of female offenders and the programs meant to serve and rehabilitate them. I also expect the review of literature to support that a majority of female offenders have histories of victimization …

Measuring Changes In Tactile Sensitivity In The Hind Paw Of Mice Using An Electronic Von Frey Apparatus, Tijana Martinov, Madison Mack, Akilah Sykes, Devavani Chatterjea Dec 2013

Measuring Changes In Tactile Sensitivity In The Hind Paw Of Mice Using An Electronic Von Frey Apparatus, Tijana Martinov, Madison Mack, Akilah Sykes, Devavani Chatterjea

Faculty Publications

Measuring inflammation-induced changes in thresholds of hind paw withdrawal from mechanical pressure is a useful technique to assess changes in pain perception in rodents. Withdrawal thresholds can be measured first at baseline and then following drug, venom, injury, allergen, or otherwise evoked inflammation by applying an accurate force on very specific areas of the skin. An electronic von Frey apparatus allows precise assessment of mouse hind paw withdrawal thresholds that are not limited by the available filament sizes in contrast to classical von Frey measurements. The ease and rapidity of measurements allow for incorporation of assessment of tactile sensitivity outcomes …

Differential Diagnosis: Approaches And Pitfalls - A Pediatric Case-Based Session For 3rd Year Medical Students, Zev Waldman, Mary Ottolini Dec 2013

Differential Diagnosis: Approaches And Pitfalls - A Pediatric Case-Based Session For 3rd Year Medical Students, Zev Waldman, Mary Ottolini

E-Learning Modules

This ninety minute session seeks to provide a systematic framework for medical students relatively new to the differential diagnosis process. Via a combined lecture/case-based approach, the session presents basic clinical reasoning concepts and specific heuristics to guide the differential process followed by an opportunity to apply the tools to simulated pediatric cases. It also introduces the concept of cognitive biases and presents strategies to mitigate their effects. The session has been successfully used with third year medical students during the first week of their pediatrics clerkship. However, with minor adaptation, a similar approach could be used at other levels of …

Collaborative Partnerships For Advancing Nurse Practice And Patient Outcomes Through Ebp Fellowships, Lisa Hopp, Constance Sobon Sensor Dec 2013

Collaborative Partnerships For Advancing Nurse Practice And Patient Outcomes Through Ebp Fellowships, Lisa Hopp, Constance Sobon Sensor

Biennial Convention (CONV)

Session presented on: Sunday, November 17, 2013:

Over the last decade, nursing educators have worked to embed evidence-based practice in curricula. Yet gaps exist in the preparation of the workforce educated prior to the infusion of evidence-based practice in nursing education. Three Joanna Briggs Institute Collaborating centers have developed and implemented clinical fellowships to address the professional development needs of clinicians. The fellowships build fundamental evidence-based practice skills that include defining problems, asking questions, searching and appraising evidence, implementing the evidence, and evaluating and sustaining outcomes. Because of the collaborative nature of the centers, each fellowship shares common elements; however, …

An Evaluative Study Of The Returned Missionary Class At Brigham Young University, Arwen Tanis Wyatt

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis reports on an evaluative study of the first 300-level Spanish class at Brigham Young University. The information gathered describes the history of the class and changes in curriculum and goals over the years. It also describes students who have taken the class: native Spanish speakers, heritage speakers, returned missionaries, students from lower-levels, students with a background in another Romance language, and presents information as to how well the class has met the needs of each group of students, as well as suggestions to better meet student needs. Results indicate that there is a general satisfaction with the first …

Is The Annual Gynecological Exam Necessary?, Joyce Cappiello Dec 2013

Is The Annual Gynecological Exam Necessary?, Joyce Cappiello

Biennial Convention (CONV)

Session presented on: Tuesday, November 19, 2013:

Background: The concept of an annual gynecological screening visit to identify disease at an early stage at which an intervention is more effective is an established component of women's health care. Both patients and providers have accepted this schedule of visits as important and the gynecological exam as integral to the visit. However, there is little evidence to support the benefits of routine annual pelvic exams in low risk women. The components of the wellness visit can be better aligned with health improvement priorities of Healthy People and the IOM report on Clinical …

Building Healthy Work Environments In Academic Communities And Healthcare Settings: The Ultimate "Giving Back To Move Forward", David P. Hrabe Dec 2013

Building Healthy Work Environments In Academic Communities And Healthcare Settings: The Ultimate "Giving Back To Move Forward", David P. Hrabe

Biennial Convention (CONV)

Session presented on: Monday, November 18, 2013:

The health and wellness of the American people is in critical condition. Although cardiovascular disease is technically the leading cause of death in Americans, behaviors are truly the number one killer, due to smoking, overeating, lack of physical activity, non-adherence to medications and suicidal gestures. Overweight and obesity will soon surpass tobacco as the number one cause of preventable death and disease in the United States. With the rapid increase in the prevalence of overweight and obesity, the Centers for Disease Control predict that one out of three Americans will have diabetes by …

The Cope Healthy Lifestyles Teen Randomized Controlled Trial: Immediate And Six Month Effects On High School Adolescents' Bmi, Psychosocial Outcomes And Academic Performance, Bernadette Mazurek Melnyk

Biennial Convention (CONV)

Session presented on: Sunday, November 17, 2013:

The high prevalence of overweight/obesity and mental health disorders in adolescents call for the urgent testing of theory-based preventive interventions that can be easily incorporated into high school curriculums. Overweight teens have multiple adverse health outcomes, including depression, anxiety, poor social skills and academic problems. Despite the prevalence of these problems, there are few rigorously conducted experimental studies that have tested health promotion interventions to improve the healthy lifestyle behaviors, psychosocial outcomes and academic performance of at-risk adolescents. The purpose of this symposium is to describe the immediate and six month post-intervention findings …

Interaction-Based Discovery Of Functionally Important Genes In Cancers, Dario Ghersi, Mona Singh Dec 2013

Interaction-Based Discovery Of Functionally Important Genes In Cancers, Dario Ghersi, Mona Singh

Interdisciplinary Informatics Faculty Publications

A major challenge in cancer genomics is uncovering genes with an active role in tumorigenesis from a potentially large pool of mutated genes across patient samples. Here we focus on the interactions that proteins make with nucleic acids, small molecules, ions and peptides, and show that residues within proteins that are involved in these interactions are more frequently affected by mutations observed in large-scale cancer genomic data than are other residues. We leverage this observation to predict genes that play a functionally important role in cancers by introducing a computational pipeline (http://canbind.princeton.edu) for mapping large-scale cancer exome data …
