Adam17-Mediated Processing Of Tnf-Α Expressed By Antiviral Effector Cd8+ T Cells Is Required For Severe T-Cell-Mediated Lung Injury, Matthew P. Deberge, Kenneth H. Ely, Guang-Shing Cheng, Richard I. Enelow
Dartmouth Scholarship
Influenza infection in humans evokes a potent CD8+ T-cell response, which is important for clearance of the virus but may also exacerbate pulmonary pathology. We have previously shown in mice that CD8+ T-cell expression of TNF-a is required for severe and lethal lung injury following recognition of an influenza antigen expressed by alveolar epithelial cells. Since TNF-a is first expressed as a transmembrane protein that is then proteolytically processed to release a soluble form, we sought to characterize the role of TNF-a processing in CD8+ T-cell-mediated injury. In this study we observed that inhibition of ADAM17-mediated processing of TNF-a by …

The Climate Change-Sustainable Development Nexus: A Proposal For Convergence, Alvin K. Leong
The Climate Change-Sustainable Development Nexus: A Proposal For Convergence, Alvin K. Leong
Dissertations & Theses
This thesis is founded on the proposition that climate change and sustainable development are inextricably linked with each other and form a “nexus” that should be understood in a pragmatic and holistic way. Accordingly, the climate change “problem” cannot be adequately addressed in “silos” or by traditional output control techniques but instead should be viewed as a multidimensional challenge that calls for transformative change in the world energy sector in light of the wider contexts of sustainability and social equity. This thesis observes that with the emergence of a post-2015 development agenda and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at the United …

Diversified Microbiota Of Meconium Is Affected By Maternal Diabetes Status, Jianzhong Hu, Yoko Nomura, Ali Bashir, Heriberto Fernandez-Hernandez, Steven Itzkowitz, Zhiheng Pei, Joanne Stone, Holly Loudon, Inga Peter
Publications and Research
Objectives This study was aimed to assess the diversity of the meconium microbiome and determine if the bacterial community is affected by maternal diabetes status. Methods The first intestinal discharge (meconium) was collected from 23 newborns stratified by maternal diabetes status: 4 mothers had pre-gestational type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) including one mother with dizygotic twins, 5 developed gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and 13 had no diabetes. The meconium microbiome was profiled using multi-barcode 16S rRNA sequencing followed by taxonomic assignment and diversity analysis. Results All meconium samples were not sterile and contained diversified microbiota. Compared with adult feces, the …

Implementing Cloud Computing In Small & Mid-Market Life-Sciences, Thomas Sommer, Ramesh Subramanian
Journal of International Technology and Information Management
This paper uses a mixed-method approach to study cloud computing implementation in emerging biotech and pharmaceutical companies. The study investigated four small biotech and pharmaceutical companies. The objective was to determine the positive and negative impacts of cloud computing and the impact of such implementation – especially the business impacts in an increasing global and competitive environment. The unique benefits, drawbacks, and various drivers of cloud implementation in these companies were identified. The research techniques were mixed qualitative methods that included action research, observations, and review of other case studies. The research indicated that small biotech and pharmaceutical companies found …

Characterizing The Implementation Of Cbt For Youth Anxiety, Meghan Smith
Characterizing The Implementation Of Cbt For Youth Anxiety, Meghan Smith
Theses and Dissertations
Although evidence-based treatments (EBTs) often perform well in research settings, when EBTs are delivered in practice settings they sometimes fail to outperform usual care (UC). One reason for this could be that therapists in practice settings may not follow the EBT protocol as closely or may deliver more therapeutic interventions that align with other treatment domains. I tested this possibility in the context of cognitive-behavioral treatment (CBT) for youth anxiety by comparing how CBT was delivered in practice (i.e., community-based clinics) and research (i.e., lab) settings. A diverse sample of youth (aged 7-15) received one of two treatments to address …

Quality Invasion Games: Red Rover Or British Bulldog?, Tj Lynch
Quality Invasion Games: Red Rover Or British Bulldog?, Tj Lynch
Plymouth Institute of Education
Red Rover (Queensland name) and British Bulldog (Victorian name) are conceptually the same game as both require a player to travel across their opponents’ space without being ‘caught’. The call inviting an individual player to leave their starting safety zone in attempt to run to the end safety zone, in Queensland was “Red Rover, I call over”, followed by the chosen person’s name. If the runner (attacking) was caught, the player in the middle (defending their playing space) would say “Red Rover – one, two three, Red Rover – you are he/she”. Victoria had a similar invite and saying when …

Health And Physical Education (Hpe) Teachers In Primary Schools: Supplementing The Debate., Tj Lynch
Plymouth Institute of Education
The purpose of this article [from the Active & Healthy Magazine, Volume 20, Issue 3/4 2013] is to join in the debate around who is best prepared to provide quality Health and Physical Education lessons (HPE) in primary schools. Christina Curry’s article ‘Why public primary schools need specialist PE teachers’ [in July 2012] advocated specialist PE teachers and Natalie McMaster’s article ‘Generalist Teachers; Ideal candidates for providing developmentally appropriate, best practice instruction in physical education in early childhood and primary settings’ advocated generalist classroom teachers [in March 2013]. Both articles published in the Active and Healthy Magazine raise pertinent issues …

Blue Jeans, Chewing Gum, And Climate Change Litigation: American Exports To Europe, Daniel Hare
Blue Jeans, Chewing Gum, And Climate Change Litigation: American Exports To Europe, Daniel Hare
Legislation and Policy Brief
Debate may still be raging over how serious the effects of climate change may be and over how significant the impact of human activities are as a cause of climate change, but what cannot be debated is the increasing number of climate change disputes becoming enmeshed in the legal system. In the United States (U.S.), climate change litigation has evolved into a somewhat consistent model with where state governments generally bringing suit as parens patriae plaintiffs on the common law ground that polluter-defendants, through their conduct, are contributing to climate change, a recognized public nuisance. In other words, American climate …

Uncharted Waters: How Hornbeck Offshore Services, Llc V. Salazar Highlights Core Problems With Judicial Oversight Of Agency Behavior, Kyle G. Bates
Legislation and Policy Brief
Following the Deepwater Horizon oil spill of April 20, 2010, oil companies filed several suits against the Department of the Interior (DOI or Interior) for various dimensions of alleged government misconduct surrounding attempts to regulate private offshore drilling in the Gulf of Mexico. Hornbeck Offshore Services, LLC v. Salazar is one of several such cases challenging the DOI’s response, which included a May 2010 moratorium halting offshore drilling in the Gulf of Mexico after the “catastrophic” Deepwater Horizon oil spill. Several companies engaged in offshore drilling challenged DOI’s moratorium in federal district court on June 7, 2010. Judge Feldman of …
Financial Literacy After Sarbanes-Oxley: Building It; Sustaining It, Edwin I. Malet
Financial Literacy After Sarbanes-Oxley: Building It; Sustaining It, Edwin I. Malet
Journal of Executive Education
The core theme of the article is that financial literacy is a challenging goal, but an achievable one. Contrary to popular belief, finance is a diverse subject and the meaning of “financial literacy” varies on a business-by-business, job-by-job basis. Practically speaking, “financial literacy” is interwoven with “business literacy”, i.e., understanding the transactions, processes, markets, stakeholders, etc., that together comprise a business. This makes it hard to deploy generic educational solutions. Some managers need more than others. Some need different than others. My recommendation is not to look for a universal definition of literacy, but rather to treat your company as …

Energy Analysis & Utility Cost Mitigation With Storage For Commercial Buildings In California, Eric Anthony Fleming
LMU Theses and Dissertations
While on a great precipice of emerging energy technologies, it is necessary to understand how these technologies are most effectively integrated into current end-user systems. At the moment,
36% of California’s energy consumption is demanded from the commercial buildings sector. This report investigates the nature of energy with the state of California through various sources and analysis techniques. Using specific weather and commercial building data, this paper also focuses on the analysis of Commercial Building energy demand modeling for the state’s sixteen weather zones. It is modeled using the Department of Energy’s tool: EnergyPlus and analysis is performed with R …
