Expectations Of Executive Mbas, Ernest A. Capozzoli, David Gundersen Nov 2013

Expectations Of Executive Mbas, Ernest A. Capozzoli, David Gundersen

Journal of Executive Education

Currently there are over 200 EMBA programs worldwide. These programs have grown in popularity and have increased by over a third in the last three years. Overall, schools are aggressively marketing their EMBA programs, and, as a consequence, prospective EMBA participants have numerous options for EMBA program enrollment. To successfully compete in the current environment, EMBA programs must understand and market to the expectations of prospective EMBAs. This paper explores the suitability of using the Teaching Goals Inventory (TGI) developed by Angelo and Cross (1993) as an instrument to analyze the expectations of EMBA candidates in the United States and …

Human Capital Indicators And Academic Success In Executive Mba Programs: A Multi-Program Study, Bradley K. Hobbs, Daniel M. Gropper Nov 2013

Human Capital Indicators And Academic Success In Executive Mba Programs: A Multi-Program Study, Bradley K. Hobbs, Daniel M. Gropper

Journal of Executive Education

This paper investigates various human capital indicators as predictors of academic success for students in Executive MBA programs. Previous literature has focused on student performance in traditional full-time MBA programs and typically only for a single school. Data was examined from two different universities, with over 130 Executive MBA students. Undergraduate GPA had a statistically significant, positive relation to academic success in the Executive MBA program, while other factors, including GMAT scores and age, were not found to be as important in predicting academic success in the Executive MBA programs.

Depression Is Associated With Repeat Emergency Department Visits In Patients With Non-Specific Abdominal Pain, Andrew C. Meltzer, Benjamin Bregman, Janice Blanchard

Emergency Medicine Faculty Publications

Introduction: Patients with abdominal pain often return multiple times despite no definitive diagnosis. Our objective was to determine if repeat emergency department (ED) use among patients with non-specific abdominal pain might be associated with a diagnosis of moderate to severe depressive disorder.

Methods: We screened 987 ED patients for major depression during weekday daytime hours from June 2011 through November 2011 using a validated depression screening tool, the PHQ-9. Each subject was classified as either no depression, mild depression or moderate/ severe depression based on the screening tool. Within this group, we identified 83 patients with non-specific abdominal pain by …

Darbari, Zhengyuan Wang, Minjung Kwak, Mariana Hildesheim, James Nichols, Darlene Allen, Catherine Seamon, Marlene Peters-Lawrence, Anna Conrey, Mary K. Hall, Gregory J. Kato, James G. Taylor Vi

Pediatrics Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: Frequent painful vaso-occlusive crises (VOCs) were associated with mortality in the Cooperative Study of Sickle Cell Disease (CSSCD) over twenty years ago. Modern therapies for sickle cell anemia (SCA) like hydroxyurea are believed to have improved overall patient survival. The current study sought to determine the relevance of the association between more frequent VOCs and death and its relative impact upon overall mortality compared to other known risk factors in a contemporary adult SCA cohort.

METHODS: Two hundred sixty four SCA adults were assigned into two groups based on patient reported outcomes for emergency department (ED) visits or hospitalizations …

Antioxidants Condition Pleiotropic Vascular Responses To Exogenous H2o2: Role Of Modulation Of Vascular Tp Receptors And The Heme Oxygenase System, Nitin Puri, Fan Zhang, Sumit R. Monu, Komal R. Sodhi, Lars Bellner, Brian D. Lamon, Yilun Zhang, Nader G. Abraham, Alberto Nasjletti

Biochemistry and Microbiology

Aims: Hydrogen peroxide (H(2)O(2)), a nonradical oxidant, is employed to ascertain the role of redox mechanisms in regulation of vascular tone. Where both dilation and constriction have been reported, we examined the hypothesis that the ability of H(2)O(2) to effect vasoconstriction or dilation is conditioned by redox mechanisms and may be modulated by antioxidants.

Results: Exogenous H(2)O(2) (0.1-10.0 μM), dose-dependently reduced the internal diameter of rat renal interlobular and 3rd-order mesenteric arteries (p<0.05). This response was obliterated in arteries pretreated with antioxidants, including tempol, pegylated superoxide dismutase (PEG-SOD), butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), and biliverdin (BV). However, as opposed to tempol or PEG-SOD, BHT & BV, antioxidants targeting radicals downstream of H(2)O(2), also uncovered vasodilation.

Innovations: Redox-dependent vasoconstriction to H(2)O(2) was blocked by inhibitors of cyclooxygenase (COX) (indomethacin-10 μM), thromboxane (TP) synthase (CGS13080-10 μM), and TP receptor antagonist (SQ29548-1 μM). However, H(2)O(2) …

Rigidity Analysis Of Protein Biological Assemblies And Periodic Crystal Structures, Filip Jagodzinski, Pamela Clark, Jessica Grant, Tiffany Liu, Samantha Monastra, Ileana Streinu Nov 2013

Rigidity Analysis Of Protein Biological Assemblies And Periodic Crystal Structures, Filip Jagodzinski, Pamela Clark, Jessica Grant, Tiffany Liu, Samantha Monastra, Ileana Streinu

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences

Background

We initiate in silico rigidity-theoretical studies of biological assemblies and small crystals for protein structures. The goal is to determine if, and how, the interactions among neighboring cells and subchains affect the flexibility of a molecule in its crystallized state. We use experimental X-ray crystallography data from the Protein Data Bank (PDB). The analysis relies on an effcient graph-based algorithm. Computational experiments were performed using new protein rigidity analysis tools available in the new release of our KINARI-Web server http://kinari.cs.umass.edu.

Results

We provide two types of results: on biological assemblies and on crystals. We found that when only isolated …

Recessions, Risks And Reforms: Changes In Inter-Organizational Activities To Improve Public Health, Glen P. Mays

Health Management and Policy Presentations

Research Objective: The Affordable Care Act created new incentives for hospitals, insurers, employers, public health agencies, and others to contribute to activities designed to promote health and prevent disease an injury. At the same time, the economic recession has constrained government and private sector spending on health and health care, necessitating changes in the scope and scale of public health delivery. This study uses data from the 1998-2012 National Longitudinal Survey of Public Health Systems to examine: (1) the extent and nature of change in inter-organizational contributions to public health activities, with a focus on hospitals, insurers, employers, and primary …

Who Benefits From Public Health Spending And How Long Does It Take: Estimating Community-Specific Spending Effects, Glen P. Mays Nov 2013

Who Benefits From Public Health Spending And How Long Does It Take: Estimating Community-Specific Spending Effects, Glen P. Mays

Health Management and Policy Presentations

Objectives: Spending on public health and prevention strategies varies widely across states and communities. The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010 (ACA) authorized the largest expansion in federal public health spending in decades, with the goals of improving population health and helping to moderate growth in medical care spending. To produce evidence needed to inform these investments, this study (1) estimates the effects of public health spending patterns within communities on preventable mortality and subsequent medical care spending; and (2) uses the methods of local instrumental variables developed by Heckman and Vytlacil and Basu to estimate how the …

Development And Evaluation Of An Ontology-Based Quality Metrics Extraction System, Sina Madani Nov 2013

Development And Evaluation Of An Ontology-Based Quality Metrics Extraction System, Sina Madani

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

The Institute of Medicine reports a growing demand in recent years for quality improvement within the healthcare industry. In response, numerous organizations have been involved in the development and reporting of quality measurement metrics. However, disparate data models from such organizations shift the burden of accurate and reliable metrics extraction and reporting to healthcare providers. Furthermore, manual abstraction of quality metrics and diverse implementation of Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems deepens the complexity of consistent, valid, explicit, and comparable quality measurement reporting within healthcare provider organizations.

The main objective of this research is to evaluate an ontology-based information extraction framework …

Cooperative Tumor Suppression By Arf And P53, Jason Thomas Forys Nov 2013

Cooperative Tumor Suppression By Arf And P53, Jason Thomas Forys

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Cancer is a complex genetic disease characterized by the inactivation of tumor suppressor genes and enhanced activity of oncogenes leading to deregulated cellular proliferation. Two tumor suppressor genes, p53 and Arf, play important roles in protecting cells against numerous biological stresses. In response to oncogenic signals, increased ARF expression leads to the activation of p53, which in turn leads to the cessation of cell division or induction of an apoptotic response. Interestingly, p53 coordinates repression of Arf transcription, setting up a negative feedback loop with currently unknown physiological significance. Cells that lack p53 express elevated levels of ARF, but it …
