In-Situ Quantification Of The Interfacial Rheological Response Of Bacterial Biofilms To Environmental Stimuli, Patrick Rühs, Lukas Böni, Gerald Fuller, R. Inglis, Peter Fischer

Biology Department Faculty Works

Understanding the numerous factors that can affect biofilm formation and stability remain poorly understood. One of the major limitations is the accurate measurement of biofilm stability and cohesiveness in real-time when exposed to changing environmental conditions. Here we present a novel method to measure biofilm strength: interfacial rheology. By culturing a range of bacterial biofilms on an air-liquid interface we were able to measure their viscoelastic growth profile during and after biofilm formation and subsequently alter growth conditions by adding surfactants or changing the nutrient composition of the growth medium. We found that different bacterial species had unique viscoelastic growth …

Auditory Stimuli Mimicking Ambient Sounds Drive Temporal "Delta Brushes" In Premature Infants, Mathilde Chipaux, Matthew Colonnese, Audrey Mauguen, Laure Fellous, Mostafa Mokhtari, Oscar Lezcano, Mathieu Milh, Olivier Dulac, Catherine Chiron, Rustem Khazipov, Anna Kaminska

Pharmacology and Physiology Faculty Publications

In the premature infant, somatosensory and visual stimuli trigger an immature electroencephalographic (EEG) pattern, “delta-brushes,” in the corresponding sensory cortical areas. Whether auditory stimuli evoke delta-brushes in the premature auditory cortex has not been reported. Here, responses to auditory stimuli were studied in 46 premature infants without neurologic risk aged 31 to 38 postmenstrual weeks (PMW) during routine EEG recording. Stimuli consisted of either low-volume technogenic “clicks” near the background noise level of the neonatal care unit, or a human voice at conversational sound level. Stimuli were administrated pseudo-randomly during quiet and active sleep. In another protocol, the cortical response …

Sabbatical Leave Proposal, Toni Burkhalter Nov 2013

Sabbatical Leave Proposal, Toni Burkhalter

Sabbaticals

Wellness is commonly defined as the "absence of disease." However, wellness actually consists of six separate dimensions, each a vital component to the health of an individual. The dimension of wellness that most closely relates to my passions and position at Parkland College is physical wellness. The goal of the anticipated sabbatical is to investigate and experience the three dimensions of physical wellness: medical system, nutrition and fitness. The proposed sabbatical will allow me to experience personal/professional rejuvenation and improved physical wellness.

Experiences Of Community College Vocational Students Who Were Required To Begin Their Studies By Taking Remedial Courses And Successfully Attained Their Associate’S Degrees: A Phenomenological Study, Amy Margaret Morrison Goings

Department of Educational Administration: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The Great Recession and national skills gap crisis have reframed community college efforts to shift from access-based institutions to that of persistence and completion-focused colleges. Within the post-recession context, this research examines what success looks like for today’s vocational community college student, as well as the current research on the barriers to completion. This qualitative, phenomenological study will explore the experiences of community college students who are graduating with vocational degrees and how they overcame known barriers to complete their degrees. In addition to summarizing the responses to each of the sub-questions, three primary themes emerged from the research that …

Microrna-138 Regulates Hypoxia-Induced Endothelial Cell Dysfunction By Targeting S100a1., Anagha Sen, Shumei Ren, Carolin Lerchenmüller, Jianxin Sun, Norbert Weiss, Patrick Most, Karsten Peppel Nov 2013

Microrna-138 Regulates Hypoxia-Induced Endothelial Cell Dysfunction By Targeting S100a1., Anagha Sen, Shumei Ren, Carolin Lerchenmüller, Jianxin Sun, Norbert Weiss, Patrick Most, Karsten Peppel

Center for Translational Medicine Faculty Papers

The Ca(2+) sensor S100A1 is essential for proper endothelial cell (EC) nitric oxide (NO) synthase (eNOS) activation. S100A1 levels are greatly reduced in primary human microvascular ECs subjected to hypoxia, rendering them dysfunctional. However mechanisms that regulate S100A1 levels in ECs are unknown. Here we show that ECs transfected with a S100A1-3' untranslated region (UTR) luciferase reporter construct display significantly reduced gene expression when subjected to low oxygen levels or chemical hypoxia. Bioinformatic analysis suggested that microRNA -138 (MiR-138) could target the 3'UTR of S100A1. Patients with critical limb ischemia (CLI) or mice subjected to femoral artery resection (FAR) displayed …

Hrs Promotes Ubiquitination And Mediates Endosomal Trafficking Of Smoothened In Drosophila Hedgehog Signaling, Jun-Kai Fan, Kai Jiang, Yajuan Liu, Jianhang Jia Nov 2013

Hrs Promotes Ubiquitination And Mediates Endosomal Trafficking Of Smoothened In Drosophila Hedgehog Signaling, Jun-Kai Fan, Kai Jiang, Yajuan Liu, Jianhang Jia

Markey Cancer Center Faculty Publications

In Hedgehog (Hh) signaling, the seven-transmembrane protein Smoothened (Smo) acts as a signal transducer that is regulated by phosphorylation, ubiquitination, and cell surface accumulation. However, it is not clear how Smo cell surface accumulation and intracellular trafficking are regulated. Here, we demonstrate that inactivation of Hrs by deletion or RNAi accumulates Smo in the late endosome that is marked by late endosome markers. Inactivation of Hrs enhances the wing defects caused by dominant-negative Smo. We show that Hrs promotes Smo ubiquitination, deleting the ubiquitin-interacting-motif (UIM) in Hrs abolishes the ability of Hrs to regulate Smo ubiquitination. However, the UIM domain …

The Impact Of Downsizing And Efficiency Measures On Anti-Fraud Resources, Marek Palasinski Nov 2013

The Impact Of Downsizing And Efficiency Measures On Anti-Fraud Resources, Marek Palasinski

The Qualitative Report

The main purpose of this study was to explore the impact of downsizing and efficiency measures on two key elements of operational performance - fraud detection and fraud reporting. Qualitative data were obtained from ethnographic observations of two major multinational insurance companies, which were already examined before the Global Financial Crisis, and subjected to an inter - and intra - business comparative analysis of anti - fraud resources. The paper points out a big discrepancy in opinions on the downsizing effects between junior staff and their supervisors. Whereas the latter present them as enabling the business to deal with suspicious …

Pkmζ Differentially Utilized Between Sexes For Remote Long-Term Spatial Memory, Veronica Sebastian, Tatyana Vergel, Raheela Baig, Lisa M. Schrott, Peter A. Serrano

Publications and Research

It is well established that male rats have an advantage in acquiring place-learning strategies, allowing them to learn spatial tasks more readily than female rats. However many of these differences have been examined solely during acquisition or in 24h memory retention. Here, we investigated whether sex differences exist in remote long-term memory, lasting 30d after training, and whether there are differences in the expression pattern of molecular markers associated with long-term memory maintenance. Specifically, we analyzed the expression of protein kinase M zeta (PKMζ) and the α-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionic acid (AMPA) receptor subunit GluA2. To adequately evaluate memory retention, we used a …

Beauty In A Crooked Line, Sarah Ramey Nov 2013

Beauty In A Crooked Line, Sarah Ramey

Theses and Dissertations

Experimentation is the beginning and end of all of my art. I examine the interactions of the materials that are involved in the journey of creativity. Typically, I begin a piece with an irregularly drawn line, using a white crayon to resist the media that I will later apply, thereby creating a negative line. This gestural line becomes an element that helps direct my intuitive mark-making. My process involves masking, using resists, and layering materials. I then remove the layers of media by scraping or sanding them away changing the texture of the paper. I am drawn to media that …
