The Impacts Of Change In Governance On Faculty And Staff At Higher Education Institutions: A Case Study Of Ohsu, Dana L. Director
The Impacts Of Change In Governance On Faculty And Staff At Higher Education Institutions: A Case Study Of Ohsu, Dana L. Director
Dissertations and Theses
In the early 1990s, Oregon Health and Science University leadership examined the political and economic landscape and determined it needed a new operational model to survive and thrive. In 1995 OHSU separated from the state higher education system and became a public corporation, with goals of increased efficiency, customer-focus, ability to attract world-class researchers and physicians, and salaries commensurate with an urban academic health center.
This research examines the internal impacts when universities undergo significant change, using OHSU's governance change as a case study. Central is the question: what effect(s) did OHSU's decision to become a unique public corporation have …

The Effect Of Media Selection On The Membrane Characteristics And Fatty Acid Composition Of Staphylococcus Aureus, Seth Russell Johnson
The Effect Of Media Selection On The Membrane Characteristics And Fatty Acid Composition Of Staphylococcus Aureus, Seth Russell Johnson
Theses and Dissertations
The cellular membrane is a vital structure to a microorganism and impacts important aspects of environmental regulation and growth. The physical structure of cellular membranes plays a key role in bacterial growth at low temperatures, membrane permeability and susceptibility to membrane active molecules as well as broader aspects of bacterial physiology and pathogenesis. Mueller Hinton medium is the required medium for antimicrobial susceptibility testing in the US, but there are many other types of media used in staphylococcal research. Different media vary in their nutrient compositions, and the effect of media composition on bacterial physiology is incompletely understood. The aim …

Troika Of Single Particle Tracking Programing: Snr Enhancement, Particle Identification, And Mapping, Lydia Kisley
Troika Of Single Particle Tracking Programing: Snr Enhancement, Particle Identification, And Mapping, Lydia Kisley
Faculty Scholarship
Single particle tracking (SPT) techniques provide a microscopic approach to probe in vivo and in vitro structure and reactions. Automatic analysis of SPT data with high efficiency and accuracy spurs the development of SPT algorithms. In this perspective, we review a range of available techniques used in SPT analysis programs. In addition, we present an example SPT program step-by-step to provide a guide so that researchers can use, modify, and/or write a SPT program for their own purposes. © 2014 the Owner Societies.

Reconsidering The Relationship Between Generic And Situated Il Approaches: The Dreyfus Model Of Skill Acquisition In Formal Information Literacy Learning Environments, Part Ii, Robert Farrell
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
This is the second of two papers discussing the application of Berkeley phenomenologist Hubert Dreyfus’ five-stage model of skill acquisition to information literacy (IL) theory and practice. This second paper will consider in detail how Dreyfus’ model might be used by academic librarians to scaffold information literacy learning opportunities that foster students’ development of information behaviors characteristic of experts within various disciplinary contexts. The article draws on several of the models mentioned in the previous article as well as representative works in the IL field that have put forward instructional activities and pedagogical strategies both for teaching generic IL skills …

Glial Pathology In Globoid Cell Leukodystrophy, Kumiko Ijichi
Glial Pathology In Globoid Cell Leukodystrophy, Kumiko Ijichi
Doctoral Dissertations
The goal of this dissertation was to examine the pathogenic potential of microglia in globoid cell leukodystrophy (GLD). We determined that psychosine, the pathogenic lipid toxin that accumulates in GLD, induced microglial transformation to globoid cells in vitro. Psychosine also induced matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-3 in cultured glia. This mirrored the elevated expression of MMP-3 in the central nervous system (CNS) of twitcher mice, a murine model of GLD. Pharmacological inhibition or genetic ablation of MMP-3 blocked psychosine-induced globoid cell formation in vitro. These findings indicate that MMP-3 mediated psychosine-induced globoid cell formation. These findings were the first to …

Beyond Finance: Permissible Commercial Activities Of U.S. Financial Holding Companies, Saule T. Omarova
Beyond Finance: Permissible Commercial Activities Of U.S. Financial Holding Companies, Saule T. Omarova
Cornell Law Faculty Publications
!is essay explains the legal basis for, and examines public policy implications of, recent expansion of large U.S. financial holding companies’ non-financial business activities. Despite its potentially significant impact on economic growth and systemic stability, this phenomenon of financial conglomeration beyond finance remains poorly understood. Yet, any truly comprehensive and effective reform of financial services regulation must address public policy issues that arise when “too-big-to-fail” banks grow even bigger and more systemically significant by combining finance with commerce.
High Throughput Data Framework Based Characterization And Evaluations Of Thermobifida Fusca For Industrial Applications, Niti Vanee
Theses and Dissertations
Cellulolytic organisms are being heavily studied for the production of biofuels, given that lignocellulosic biomass would be a cheap, abundant, and renewable starting material for chemical production. A challenge with cellulolytic microorganisms is that they are typically poorly characterized and often difficult to genetically manipulate. Our group focuses characterization and engineering of a thermophilic aerobic, cellulolytic actinobacterium, Thermobifida fusca. The wider range of optimal temperature and pH for the growth condition, besides the secretion of several group of cellulases, have made this microbe a potentially efficient host system for industrially application. After the development of first ever successful genetic manipulation …

Large-Scale Statistical Modelling Via Machine Learning Classifiers, Christina Parpoula, Krystallenia Drosou, Christos Koukouvinos
Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability
The problem of statistical modelling and identifying the significant variables in large data sets is common nowadays. This paper deals with the statistical analysis of two large dimensional data sets; we firstly conduct a seismic hazard sensitivity analysis using seismic data from Greece acquired during the years 1962−2003, and then analyze Trauma data collected in an annual registry conducted during the year 2005 by the Hellenic Trauma and Emergency Surgery Society involving 30 General Hospitals in Greece. The main purpose of both analyses is to extract high-level knowledge for the domain user or decision-maker. Eight non parametric classifiers derived from …

Sensitivity Of Health Related Indices Is A Non-Decreasing Function Of Their Partitions, Fragiskos Bersimis, Demosthenes Panagiotakos, Malvina Vamvakari
Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability
This work aims to theoretically evaluate whether the number k of partitions of a discrete variable X affects the sensitivity Se(X) of a binary health outcome Y. The distribution of variable X was either unknown or the uniform. Thus, two discrete random variables Xk and Xk+1 with k and k+1 partitions, respectively, were considered. In addition, a random variable Y that indicates the actual health status of an individual was also considered. The case of the composite index Tkm which is formed by the sum of m variables Xk j , j = 1,2, . . . ,m either when …
