The American Dream: Daca, Dreamers, And Comprehensive Immigration Reform, Heather Fathali Nov 2013

The American Dream: Daca, Dreamers, And Comprehensive Immigration Reform, Heather Fathali

Seattle University Law Review

On June 15, 2012, President Obama made an announcement that changed the lives of millions. Effective immediately, the Obama administration would implement a new program—what would come to be known as Deferred Action for Child-hood Arrivals (DACA)—offering eligible undocumented young people both a two-year respite from the haunting possibility of deportation as well as the eligibility to apply for employment authorization. While millions were elated by the President’s announcement, he also faced harsh criticism. Many claimed that his action exceeded federal statutory limits, exceeded his Executive powers, and usurped congressional authority. Still others, anxious to see comprehensive immigration reform implemented, …

Academic Freedom And Professorial Speech In The Post-Garcetti World, Oren R. Griffin Nov 2013

Academic Freedom And Professorial Speech In The Post-Garcetti World, Oren R. Griffin

Seattle University Law Review

Academic freedom, a coveted feature of higher education, is the concept that faculty should be free to perform their essential functions as professors and scholars without the threat of retaliation or undue administrative influence. The central mission of an academic institution, teach-ing and research, is well served by academic freedom that allows the faculty to conduct its work in the absence of censorship or coercion. In support of this proposition, courts have long held that academic freedom is a special concern of the First Amendment, granting professors and faculty members cherished protections regarding academic speech. In Garcetti v. Ceballos, the …

Contribution Of Information And Communication Technology (Ict) In Country's H-Index, M. Farhadi, H. Salehi, M.A. Embi, M. Fooladi, H. Farhadi, A. Aehaei Chadegani, N. Ale Ebrahim

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

The aim of this study is to examine the effect of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) development on country's scientific ranking as measured by H-index. Moreover, this study applies ICT development sub-indices including ICT Use, ICT Access and ICT skill to find the distinct effect of these sub-indices on country's H-index. To this purpose, required data for the panel of 14 Middle East countries over the period 1995 to 2009 is collected. Findings of the current study show that ICT development increases the H-index of the sample countries. The results also indicate that ICT Use and ICT Skill sub-indices positively …

An Intervention For Sensory Difficulties In Children With Autism: A Randomized Trial., Roseann C Schaaf, Teal W. Benevides, Zoe Mailloux, Patricia Faller, Joanne Hunt, Elke Van Hooydonk, Regina Freeman, Benjamin E Leiby, Jocelyn Sendecki, Donna Kelly

Department of Occupational Therapy Faculty Papers

This study evaluated a manualized intervention for sensory difficulties for children with autism, ages 4-8 years, using a randomized trial design. Diagnosis of autism was confirmed using gold standard measures. Results show that the children in the treatment group (n = 17) who received 30 sessions of the occupational therapy intervention scored significantly higher (p = 0.003, d = 1.2) on Goal Attainment Scales (primary outcome), and also scored significantly better on measures of caregiver assistance in self-care (p = 0.008 d = 0.9) and socialization (p = 0.04, d = 0.7) than the Usual Care control group (n = …

Two-Vessel Off-Pump Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting By Left Thoracotomy In A Complex Redo Case, Shinya Unai, Md, Hitoshi Hirose, Md, Phd, Gary A. Cook, Pa-C, Nicholas C. Cavarocchi, Md, John W..C. Entwistle Iii, Md, Phd Nov 2013

Two-Vessel Off-Pump Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting By Left Thoracotomy In A Complex Redo Case, Shinya Unai, Md, Hitoshi Hirose, Md, Phd, Gary A. Cook, Pa-C, Nicholas C. Cavarocchi, Md, John W..C. Entwistle Iii, Md, Phd

Department of Surgery Faculty Papers

Introduction:

The left thoracotomy approach is an alternative technique for coronary revascularization to avoid complications associated with re-sternotomy, such as injury to patent grafts, right ventricle, aorta, during re-sternotomy. Situations such as calcification of the ascending aorta and previous mediastinitis favor the use of the left thoracotomy approach. Revascularization of the circumflex territory via a lateral thoracotomy has been reported previously. However, reports of revascularization of the LAD combined with circumflex artery territory via left thoracotomy approach are rare. We successfully performed an off-pump CABG by left thoracotomy in a complex redo case to revascularize the LAD and obtuse marginal …

A Note On War And Fiscal Capacity In Developing Countries, Abdur Chowdhury, Syed M. Murshed Nov 2013

A Note On War And Fiscal Capacity In Developing Countries, Abdur Chowdhury, Syed M. Murshed

Economics Faculty Research and Publications

We examine the effect of war on state fiscal capacity in developing countries, measured by tax revenue to GDP ratios. In divided or factionalised societies, patronage may substitute for common interest public goods, with the possibility of violent contestation over a rent. Our dynamic panel empirical estimates of the determinants of fiscal capacity are applied to 79 developing countries, during 1980–2010. Results indicate that war, especially civil war, retards fiscal capacity, along with poor governance, oil dependence and macroeconomic mismanagement.

Psychosocial Implications For Students With Learning Disabilites, Jordan D. Short Nov 2013

Psychosocial Implications For Students With Learning Disabilites, Jordan D. Short

Research Papers

Students with learning disabilities face many challenges throughout their academic careers. There are numerous assessments to diagnose students and many strategies to assist them in the classroom. There are three main learning disabilities which students can be diagnosed with: Dyslexia, Dysgraphia and Dyscalculia. There are currently an estimated number of six million students who are diagnosed with a learning disability. This study investigated if students with learning disabilities face more psychosocial challenges than their peers without learning disabilities. This study focuses on the psychosocial implications that students with learning disabilities face from peers, parents and school personnel. These psychosocial implications …

Reduced Expression Of The Vesicular Acetylcholine Transporter And Neurotransmitter Content Affects Synaptic Vesicle Distribution And Shape In Mouse Neuromuscular Junction, Hermann A. Rodrigues, Matheus De C. Fonseca, Wallace L. Camargo, Patricia M. A. Lima, Patricia M. Martinelli, Ligia A. Naves, Vania F. Prado, Marco A. M. Prado, Cristina Guatimosim

Anatomy and Cell Biology Publications

In vertebrates, nerve muscle communication is mediated by the release of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine packed inside synaptic vesicles by a specific vesicular acetylcholine transporter (VAChT). Here we used a mouse model (VAChT KDHOM) with 70% reduction in the expression of VAChT to investigate the morphological and functional consequences of a decreased acetylcholine uptake and release in neuromuscular synapses. Upon hypertonic stimulation, VAChT KDHOM mice presented a reduction in the amplitude and frequency of miniature endplate potentials, FM 1-43 staining intensity, total number of synaptic vesicles and altered distribution of vesicles within the synaptic terminal. In contrast, under electrical stimulation or …
