Release Rates Of Liposomal Contents Are Controlled By Kosmotropes And Chaotropes, Robin L. Mccarley, Jerimiah C. Forsythe, Martin Loew, Maria F. Mendoza, Nicole M. Hollabaugh, James E. Winter Nov 2013

Release Rates Of Liposomal Contents Are Controlled By Kosmotropes And Chaotropes, Robin L. Mccarley, Jerimiah C. Forsythe, Martin Loew, Maria F. Mendoza, Nicole M. Hollabaugh, James E. Winter

Faculty Publications

Contents release from redox-responsive liposomes is anion-specific. Liposomal contents release is initiated by the contact of apposed liposome bilayers having in their outer leaflet 1,2-dioleoyl-sn-glycero-3- phosphoethanolamine (DOPE), whose presence is due to the redox-stimulated removal of a quinone propionic acid protecting group (Q) from Q-DOPE lipids. Contents release occurs upon the phase transition of DOPE from its lamellar liquid-crystalline phase (Lα) to its hexagonal-II inverted micelle (HII) phase. Contents release is slower in the presence of weakly hydrated chaotropic anions versus highly hydrated kosmotropic anions and is attributed to ion accumulation near the zwitterionic DOPE headgroups, in turn altering the …

Minor edits. “The goal of this Toolkit is to provide jails of all sizes, political divisions, and geographic locations with a step-by-step guide for preventing, detecting, and eliminating sexual abuse of inmates in their custody – and for responding effectively to abuse when it occurs. Prison rape includes all forms of inmate sexual abuse within a correctional facility, including state and federal prisons, county and municipal jails, police lock-ups, holding facilities, inmate transportation vehicles, juvenile detention facilities, and community corrections facilities. Protecting arrestees, detainees, and inmates from sexual violence is part of a jail’s core mission. This toolkit will help …

Findings From The Peutz-Jeghers Syndrome Registry Of Uruguay, Asadur Tchekmedyian, Christopher I. Amos, Sherri J. Bale, Dakai Zhu, Stefan Arold, Joaquin Berrueta, Natalie Nabon, Thomas Mcgarrity Nov 2013

Findings From The Peutz-Jeghers Syndrome Registry Of Uruguay, Asadur Tchekmedyian, Christopher I. Amos, Sherri J. Bale, Dakai Zhu, Stefan Arold, Joaquin Berrueta, Natalie Nabon, Thomas Mcgarrity

Dartmouth Scholarship

Background: Peutz-Jeghers syndrome (PJS) is characterized by intestinal polyposis, mucocutaneous pigmentation and an increased cancer risk, usually caused by mutations of the STK11 gene. This study collected epidemiological, clinical and genetic data from all Uruguayan PJS patients. Methods: Clinical data were obtained from public and private medical centers and updated annually. Sequencing of the STK11 gene in one member of each family was performed. Results and discussion: 25 cases in 11 unrelated families were registered (15 males, 10 females). The average age of diagnosis and death was 18 and 41 years respectively. All patients had characteristic PJS pigmentation and gastrointestinal …

On The Evolution Of The Serotonin Transporter Linked Polymorphic Region (5-Httlpr) In Primates, Seth D. Dobson, Lauren J.N Brent

Dartmouth Scholarship

Some allelic variants of the serotonin transporter linked polymorphic region (5-HTTLPR) result in lower levels of expression of the serotonin transporter gene (SLC6A4). These low-expressing (LE) alleles are associated with mental-health disorders in a minority of humans that carry them. Humans are not the only primates that exhibit this polymorphism; other species, including some monkeys, also have LE and high-expressing (HE) variants of 5-HTTLPR. We propose a behavioral genetic framework to explain the adaptive evolution of this polymorphism in primates, including humans. We hypothesize that both LE and HE alleles are maintained by balancing selection in species characterized …

Compounds That Suppress Cancer Cells And Exhibit Antitumor Activity (Us), James Turkson, Patrick Gunning

UCF Patents

The present invention provides compounds S3I-201.1066 (Formula 1) and S3I-201.2096 (Formula 2) as selective Stat3 binding agents that block Stat3 association with cognate receptor pTyr motifs, Stat3 phosphorylation and nuclear translocation, Stat3 transcriptional function, and consequently induced Stat3-specific antitumor cell effects in vitro and antitumor response in vivo.

A Descriptive Exploratory Study Of The Experience Of Gay Partners Of Hiv-Positive Men, Jon Christensen Phd, Msn, Rn Nov 2013

A Descriptive Exploratory Study Of The Experience Of Gay Partners Of Hiv-Positive Men, Jon Christensen Phd, Msn, Rn

Dissertations

HIV disease/AIDS has been the focus of much research since its introduction in 1981 and continues to have profound implications for those living with the disease and for those who are in close social relationships with them. One group that has received minimal attention in the HIV/AIDS literature is gay partners of HIV infected men. The aim of this study was to explore and describe the experiences of gay men living with a life partner who has HIV disease/AIDS who were not primary caregivers. A qualitative study using an interpretive descriptive approach was employed to study the experiences of ten …

Cellular Interactions Occurring in the Hilar Lymph Node Mediate the Development of Tolerance in an Ovalbumin - Induced Murine Model of Allergic Airway Disease

Prabitha Natarajan, Ph.D.

University of Connecticut, 2013

In a biphasic, ovalbumin (OVA)-induced murine asthma model where allergic airway disease (AAD) is followed by resolution and the development of local inhalational tolerance (LIT), transforming growth factor (TGF)-β expressing CD5+ B cells were selectively expanded locally in hilar lymph nodes (HLN) of LIT mice. When adoptively transferred, CD5+ B cells isolated from HLN of LIT mice but not CD5– B cells inhibited airway eosinophilia, in this OVA model. …
