A Two-Step Estimation Procedure And A Goodness-Of-Fit Test For Spatial Extremes Models, Hongwei Shang Nov 2013

A Two-Step Estimation Procedure And A Goodness-Of-Fit Test For Spatial Extremes Models, Hongwei Shang

Doctoral Dissertations

Parametric max-stable processes are increasingly used to model spatial extremes. Since the dependence structure is specified for block maxima, the data used for inference are block maxima from all sites. To improve the estimation efficiency, we propose a two-step approach with composite likelihood that utilizes site-wise daily records in addition to block maxima. Besides the parameter estimation, there is no formal model checking and diagnosis method for spatial extremes modeling yet. Model diagnosis in practice has been informal and mostly based on visual checking tools such as residual plot and quantile-quantile plot. We proposed a goodness-of-fit test for max-stable processes …

Mysticism In Patañjali’S Yoga Sūtras And In Carl Jung’S Psychology, Harold Coward Nov 2013

Mysticism In Patañjali’S Yoga Sūtras And In Carl Jung’S Psychology, Harold Coward

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

In this article we will examine the understandings of mysticism as offered by Patañjali’s Yoga Sūtras I:41-51 and Carl Jung’s Western psychology. For our purposes, mysticism is not to be understood as something “misty,” vague or emotional (to list but three current misinterpretations). Rather, as understood by the great mystics of all religious traditions, mysticism is experienced as something like sensory perception – only more direct and more vivid! In Patañjali’s Yoga, for example, mysticism is a case of intuition or supersensuous perception (pratibhā) from which distorting emotions have been purged by disciplined meditation. While Western philosophers such as Bertrand …

Center for Plant Science Innovation: Faculty Publications

Maintenance of sphingolipid homeostasis is critical for cell growth and programmed cell death (PCD). Serine palmitoyltransferase (SPT), composed of LCB1 and LCB2 subunits, catalyzes the primary regulatory point for sphingolipid synthesis. Small subunits of SPT (ssSPT) that strongly stimulate SPT activity have been identified in mammals, but the role of ssSPT in eukaryotic cells is unclear. Candidate Arabidopsis thaliana ssSPTs, ssSPTa and ssSPTb, were identified and characterized. Expression of these 56–amino acid polypeptides in a Saccharomyces cerevisiae SPT null mutant stimulated SPT activity from the Arabidopsis LCB1/LCB2 heterodimer by >100-fold through physical interaction with LCB1/LCB2. ssSPTa transcripts were …

Response Of Near-Isogenic Sorghum Lines, Differing At The P Locus For Plant Colour, To Grain Mould And Head Smut Fungi, Deanna L. Funnell-Harris, L. K. Prom, Scott E. Sattler, Jeffrey F. Pedersen Nov 2013

Response Of Near-Isogenic Sorghum Lines, Differing At The P Locus For Plant Colour, To Grain Mould And Head Smut Fungi, Deanna L. Funnell-Harris, L. K. Prom, Scott E. Sattler, Jeffrey F. Pedersen

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

Leaves and stalks of many sorghum genotypes accumulate dark red or purple pigments upon wounding while some plants, called ‘tan,’ do not. Grains with unpigmented ‘white’ pericarps grown on tan plants are more desirable for food. The hypothesis tested was that pigments in plants protected grain against the panicle diseases grain mould and head smut. Near-isogenic tan or purple plant color genotypes with white grain were planted at Lincoln and Ithaca, NE and Corpus Christi, TX. The field grown grain was plated onto semi-selective media to detect the presence of grain colonisation by mould genera Alternaria, Fusarium and Curvularia. …

Collaborative Healthcare: Interprofessional Practice, Education and Evaluation (JCIPE)

The fourth international Collaboration Across Borders conference (CAB IV) was held in Vancouver BC, Canada on June 12‐14, 2013. This conference, held every two years, attracts people involved in interprofessional education and care (IPEC) from across North America, and from other countries such as Japan, Australia and the European Union. The conference is a collaborative venture between the American Interprofessional Health Collaborative (AIHC) and the Canadian Interprofessional Health Collaborative (CIHC). The site of the conference alternates between the United States and Canada. As interest and involvement in interprofessional approaches to education and health care grows, so too does attendance at …

Collaborative Healthcare: Interprofessional Practice, Education and Evaluation (JCIPE)

My career in nursing began more than three decades ago. Healthcare education during that time was delivered in the familiar “silo” style. Having to navigate through clinical practice, learning along the way which disciplines were involved in the care of patients and how to work as a team developed over time.

Collaborative Healthcare: Interprofessional Practice, Education and Evaluation (JCIPE)

A new and exciting course on TeamSTEPPS was introduced at Jefferson last Spring. JCIPE has embraced the concept of TeamSTEPPS, a program developed by the Department of Defense and now sponsored by AHRQ to train healthcare professionals to work together effectively as a team to ensure patient safety. The following team skills are emphasized: leadership, situational awareness, team support and communication skills. To introduce this to the campus JCIPE sponsored a pilot project in May, 2013 to train a cadre of students in the techniques of TeamSTEPPS.

City Of Morris - Chloride Discharge Assessment, Kelly Asche, Sharice Fontenot, Sam Lee

Center for Small Towns

This project involved assisting the Office of Sustainability and the City of Morris to understand the use of softeners and the amount of chloride put into the city’s waste water treatment plant. The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency recently presented new regulations for chloride levels being discharged into rivers from municipal waste water treatment plants. The students measured current chloride levels and estimated the amount of chloride that would be discharged if the community switched to high-efficiency softeners. This information is being used to inform the community on whether the city should invest in a municipal water softening system.

"Each Word Shows How You Love Me": The Social Literacy Practice Of Children's Letter Writing (1780-1860), Emily Bruce

History Publications

This article draws on hundreds of letters that formed German children’s correspondence with their parents, other relatives, teachers and friends, written mostly between the 1780s and 1850s. Through this study, we see the part literacy played in transformations of bourgeois childhood in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Europe. The article further investigates how children used letters as a means of learning sociability and building relationships within kinship networks. Historians of education have sometimes treated children’s writing as secondary to more authoritative records. Yet we miss something important about the history of literacy education if we disregard children’s writing or use it only …
