A Study Of Household Finance In China, Zhen Huang Nov 2013

A Study Of Household Finance In China, Zhen Huang

Lingnan Theses

The emerging field of household finance, which studies the welfare benefits of financial markets for households and how effectively households use this market, is of significant importance for both academics and policy makers. However, studies in this new field remain scarce. Using data from a national representative survey that is unique for its combination of abundant household characteristics and heterogeneous individual preferences, attitudes and believes, and for its inclusion of investment behaviour and performances, this thesis pioneers a positive household finance study in developing countries by systematically investigating Chinese householders’ investments in the stock market. Moreover, this is the first …

Local Roots, National Trend: The Richmond Printmaking Workshop (1978-1991), Alicia Mccarty Nov 2013

Local Roots, National Trend: The Richmond Printmaking Workshop (1978-1991), Alicia Mccarty

Theses and Dissertations

The Richmond Printmaking Workshop (RPW) was in operation from 1978 to 1991 during a nationwide print revival. From the 1960s through the 1990s, hundreds of new printmaking workshops and cooperatives sprung up across the country. This newfound popularity in the medium led to a boom in the print market and resulted in widespread experimentation of the medium. The RPW, founded by artists Nancy David and Gail McKennis, began in response to these trends and demonstrates how the print resurgence operated on a local level. Like many other small printmaking workshops of the period, it provided printmaking equipment to artists and …

Genetic Basis Of Neurocognitive Decline And Reduced White-Matter Integrity In Normal Human Brain Aging, David C. Glahn, Jack W. Kent, Vincent P. Diego, Anderson M. Winkler, Joanne E. Curran, Harald Hh Goring, Thomas D. Dyer, Laura Almasy, Ravi Duggirala, John Blangero Nov 2013

Genetic Basis Of Neurocognitive Decline And Reduced White-Matter Integrity In Normal Human Brain Aging, David C. Glahn, Jack W. Kent, Vincent P. Diego, Anderson M. Winkler, Joanne E. Curran, Harald Hh Goring, Thomas D. Dyer, Laura Almasy, Ravi Duggirala, John Blangero

School of Medicine Publications

Identification of genes associated with brain aging should markedly improve our understanding of the biological processes that govern normal age-related decline. However, challenges to identifying genes that facilitate successful brain aging are considerable, including a lack of established phenotypes and difficulties in modeling the effects of aging per se, rather than genes that influence the underlying trait. In a large cohort of randomly selected pedigrees (n = 1,129 subjects), we documented profound aging effects from young adulthood to old age (18-83 y) on neurocognitive ability and diffusion-based white-matter measures. Despite significant phenotypic correlation between white-matter integrity and tests of processing …

Query Based Sampling And Multi-Layered Semantic Analysis To Find Robust Network Of Drug-Disease Associations, Karththikka Ramani Muthukuri Nov 2013

Query Based Sampling And Multi-Layered Semantic Analysis To Find Robust Network Of Drug-Disease Associations, Karththikka Ramani Muthukuri

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This thesis presents the design and implementation of a system to discover the semantically related networks of drug-disease associations, called DDNet, from medical literature. A fully functional DDNet can be transformative in identification of "drug targets" and may new avenues for "drug repositioning" in clinical and translational research. In particular, a Local Latent Semantic Analysis (LLSA) was introduced to implement a system that is efficient, scalalble and relatively free from systemi bias. In addition, a query-based sampling was introduced to find representative samples from the "ocean of data" to build model that is relatively free from "garbage-in garbage-out syndrome. Also, …

The Perceptions Of Students Toward Online Learning At A Midwestern University: What Are Students Telling Us And What Are We Doing About It?, John A. Huss, Shannon Eastep

i.e.: inquiry in education

This action research explored attitudes and perceptions of students at a Midwestern university enrolled in at least one fully online course during fall 2012. Our objective was to initiate a study that gathered comprehensive information about the diversity of the online phenomenon at our university so that we could seek improvement as online designers and professors and subsequently share our findings with other instructors on campus who teach students within the targeted population. The study focused on student perspectives toward web-based instruction and student expectations and experiences in the areas of course format; technological support; interaction with faculty and peers; …

“I Don’T See Myself As A Medical Assistant Anymore”: Learning To Become A Health Coach, In Our Own Voices, Rachel Willard-Grace, Adriana Najmabadi, Christina Araujo, Dalia Canizalez, Denise Devore, Camille Prado, Amireh Ghorob, Thomas Bodenheimer

i.e.: inquiry in education

Health coaching may improve the health of patients with chronic conditions, and the model is growing in popularity. However, little is known about the experience of becoming a Health Coach. We explored our experiences as medical assistants moving into new roles as health coaches, a trainer of health coaches, and their supporting team. A focus group was conducted in November 2012 with three health coaches and one health coach trainer. Using participatory methods, our whole team, including the health coaches, took part in data analysis. We found that learning to become a Health Coach required embracing a radically new role …

Strategic Planning For University-Based Executive Education Programs: Success Factors And Design Alternatives, Newton Margulies, Jack R. Gregg Nov 2013

Strategic Planning For University-Based Executive Education Programs: Success Factors And Design Alternatives, Newton Margulies, Jack R. Gregg

Journal of Executive Education

There appears to be a growing interest among B-schools in providing continuing management education. The trend toward meeting demands of changing business and learning environments – and responding to the obsolescence of various management disciplines -- has encouraged growth in non-degree, professional development programs. Some of these programs are generic in nature, while others are more specialized, depending on the perceived strengths and interests of the schools and the areas faculty choose to emphasize.

How Medicaid Expansions And Future Community Health Center Funding Will Shape Capacity To Meet The Nation's Primary Care Needs, Leighton C. Ku, Julia Zur, Emily Jones, Peter Shin, Sara J. Rosenbaum

Geiger Gibson/RCHN Community Health Foundation Research Collaborative

A new report by Drs. L. Ku, J. Zur, E. Jones, P. Shin and S. Rosenbaum examines the impact of federal and state policy decisions on community health centers and their ability to continue providing primary care to the nation's poorest residents. The report estimates that under a worst-case scenario the nation's health centers would be forced to contract, leaving an estimated 1 million low-income people without access to health care services by 2020.
