Heat Of Combustion Of Algae For Use In A Diesel Engine, Cassia Diane Davis Dec 2013

Heat Of Combustion Of Algae For Use In A Diesel Engine, Cassia Diane Davis

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

With nearly a quarter of the world’s population living without any access to electricity or modern energy, strategies for providing energy are very important. While the use of fossil fuels can bring the much needed energy to these areas they come with a host of problems. Fossil fuel use contributes to greenhouse gas emissions, air pollution and ocean acidification. In many areas fossil fuels have to be transported in. The subsequent transmission and distribution can be difficult especially in rural areas. Dependence on fossil fuels also leaves the user vulnerable to disruption in deliveries and price fluctuations. While there are …

Still Siblings: The Perceived Importance Of Sibling Relationships For Foster Children, Jessica A. Church Dec 2013

Still Siblings: The Perceived Importance Of Sibling Relationships For Foster Children, Jessica A. Church

Masters Theses

This research was conducted to answer the question “Do children who are perceived to have strong relationships with siblings and more access to their siblings have fewer problems adjusting to their foster care placement as observed by child welfare professionals?” This qualitative research project was completed through semi-structured interviews with professionals who work with children in foster care in a variety of ways (and may have worked with children in more than one way during their career in child welfare), such as foster care workers, counselors, and sibling visitation supervisors. The snowball sampling method was used in this research. These …

Income Shifting Among Option Intensive Firms In The 1990'S, Christopher Becker Dec 2013

Income Shifting Among Option Intensive Firms In The 1990'S, Christopher Becker

Dissertations

One way a multinational corporation can further satisfy its primary objective, which is to maximize shareholder wealth, is to minimize the share of its income that is transferred through taxation to the various sovereign nations within which it does business. The profit maximizing firm attempts to maximize (minimize) taxable income in those jurisdictions where income tax burdens are the least (most) in such a way as to diminish the present value of its global total tax burden. While the US corporate income tax rate has remained relatively stable over the decades since most US income tax rates were last slashed …

The Effect Of The Missouri Safe School Act Of 1997 On Alternative Education Students: A Qualitative Analysis, Randall Gene Rhodes Dec 2013

The Effect Of The Missouri Safe School Act Of 1997 On Alternative Education Students: A Qualitative Analysis, Randall Gene Rhodes

Dissertations

Because of a perceived increase in school related violence, a political reaction occurred in Missouri that led in 1997 to the Missouri Safe Schools Act. This new law significantly changed school disciplinary policy and allowed administrators to move large groups of students to alternative education programs, or expel them to the streets. The purpose of this qualitative study was to learn from students who attended at least one year in an alternative education program about their experiences. I interviewed 26 former students and another 14 former students entered into the conversation by posting their thoughts on a Facebook site for …

Evidence-Based Practice, Information Literacy, And Graduate Inquiry: A Collaborative Learning And Teaching Experience, Rosemary Green, Mary Corcoran

LOEX Conference Proceedings 2011

This session addresses the alliance between information literacy and evidence-based practice (EBP) - the process of applying clinically relevant research to patient care. The context of the discussion is an occupational therapy (OT) research course co-taught by a graduate librarian and an OT faculty member. The course was literature-based, evidence-based, and inquiry-based; students engaged in problem-based activities related to occupation, mobility, and accessibility. We describe our strategies for embedding and modeling information literacy as a natural function of the course; provide examples of class activities and studentsí multimedia projects; and invite participants to explore their own understandings of practice supported …

Neutral No More: Secondary Effects Analysis And The Quiet Demise Of The Content-Neutrality Test, Mark Rienzi, Stuart Buck Dec 2013

Neutral No More: Secondary Effects Analysis And The Quiet Demise Of The Content-Neutrality Test, Mark Rienzi, Stuart Buck

Fordham Law Review

When the Supreme Court introduced the “secondary effects” doctrine to allow for zoning of adult businesses, critics fell into two camps. Some, like Justice William Brennan, predicted dire consequences for the First Amendment, particularly if the doctrine was used in political speech cases. Others, like Professor Laurence Tribe, predicted secondary effects analysis would be limited to sexually explicit speech and would not threaten the First Amendment. The modern consensus is that the doctrine has, in fact, been limited to cases about sex.

Recent cases demonstrate, however, that the impact of the secondary effects doctrine on the First Amendment has been …

The Flawed Explicit Safety Net: How Federally Sponsored Deposit Insurance Contributes To Financial Crisis, Nicholas J. Colombo Dec 2013

The Flawed Explicit Safety Net: How Federally Sponsored Deposit Insurance Contributes To Financial Crisis, Nicholas J. Colombo

Fordham Law Review

In the spring of 2012, JPMorgan Chase and Co. (JP Morgan), one of the largest and most profitable banks in the United States, made a $6 billion mistake. The issues all began in London, with a division of JP Morgan known as the Chief Investment Office (CIO). While the CIO’s stated purpose was to use excess deposits to hedge against interest rate risk, it had in fact been responsible for earning approximately $4 billion in profits for JP Morgan over the three previous years. This all came to a screeching halt when Bruno Iksil, now known as the “London Whale,” …

Fiscal Year 2013 Fhwa-536 Report For The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, Steven Douglas Kreis, Candice Y. Wallace, Bryan Gibson, Sarah M. Mccormack

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) requires state transportation agencies to submit a biennial report on local highway finances. The purpose of these reports is to provide FHWA with the data it needs to capture the financing of highway activities at the local level. Based on this information, it can identify trends in revenue, expenditures, investments, and program development, and in turn make decisions about future investments. The report, FHWA-536, asks agencies to report on four areas of local highway finance: 1) disposition of highway-user revenues; 2) revenues used for roads and streets identified by source and funding type; 3) road …

Ayacucho, Goodbye And The Portrayal Of A Nation's Contradictions, Oswaldo Gavidia Cannon

Journal of Global Initiatives: Policy, Pedagogy, Perspective

During the 1980s and early 1990s, Peru lived difficult times with the escalation of terrorism. People living in the Andean rural areas were caught between two fires- the terrorists and the military sent to control the latter- and many innocent people were killed or disappeared. Based on these events, Julio Ortega wrote the novella Ayacucho, Goodbye. In this narrative, the dead body of an indigenous peasant leaves his grave in Ayacucho and begins a journey to Lima, the capital of Peru, looking for the parts of his body that were not buried with him, which is really a quest …

Extractive Versus Productive Economy: A Case Study Comparison Of Peru And South Korea, Rubén Berríos Dec 2013

Extractive Versus Productive Economy: A Case Study Comparison Of Peru And South Korea, Rubén Berríos

Journal of Global Initiatives: Policy, Pedagogy, Perspective

There are striking contrasts between a productive and an extractive economy. South Korea and Peru are used as examples. Korea is not a resource-rich country but has developed remarkably fast. Pem, on the other hand, is a resource-rich country but has shown uneven rates of growth and has had a lackluster development performance because it has relied on extractive industries that have brought boom and bust. Korea is a high performing economy that achieved high rates of growth implementing policies that emphasized productivity and promoted industrialization and free trade. Korea's success is explained in terms of its policies promoting the …

Five Factor Model Personality Profiles Of University Of North Dakota Unmanned Aircraft Systems Students, Zachary Peter Waller Dec 2013

Five Factor Model Personality Profiles Of University Of North Dakota Unmanned Aircraft Systems Students, Zachary Peter Waller

Theses and Dissertations

A great deal of effort has been made to quantify personality characteristics in the pilots of manned aircraft. However, analysis of similar characteristics of individuals interested in piloting Unmanned Aircraft (UA) remains relatively unexplored. This research examined the Five Factor Model (FFM) personality profiles of individuals pursuing Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) studies at the University of North Dakota (UND). Using the Big Five Inventory (BFI) general personality index, the responses of a UAS Student group (N=65) were compared to a Normative sample group (N=248) previously collected by Petros (2013). Apart from the two highest scoring factors in each group (i.e. …

Medication Adherence: To Have Is To Hold, James A. Benn Dec 2013

Medication Adherence: To Have Is To Hold, James A. Benn

Theses and Dissertations

Nature of the problem: Medication non-adherence is consistently the most frequent cause of mental health decompensation, relapse of mental illness, and hospitalization. The solution to non-adherence remains quite elusive, despite it being relatively easy to identity as the most major obstacle to successful control of mental illness.

Method: Eighteen documents published between years 2002-2012 were rated using the AACN’s evidence leveling system. The 18 studies were examined to better understand what is known and not known about the challenge we face in trying to effect recovery and to prevent relapse of mental illness in the United States.

Results: Various study …

General Anesthesia And The Importance Of Smoking Cessation, Katie R. Pence Dec 2013

General Anesthesia And The Importance Of Smoking Cessation, Katie R. Pence

Theses and Dissertations

Despite the known consequences of cigarette smoking, one third of the population of industrialized countries continue to smoke (Rodrigo, 2000). Cigarette smoking alters nonnal physiologic function of the cardiac and respiratory systems and increases risks in the perioperative period for general anesthesia. Systematic reviews and randomized controlled trials have reached the following conclusion: smokers who stop smoking four to eight weeks prior to a scheduled surgery are less likely to develop complications post operatively. Eight weeks of smoking cessation prior to anesthesia is considered to be optimal. Smokers have been noted to possibly need increased analgesia, sedatives, and non-depolarizing muscle …

Southeast South Dakota Experiment Farm Annual Progress Report: 2013, Agricultural Experiment Station

Agricultural Experiment Station and Research Farm Annual Reports

The 2013 season brought some welcome relief from the drought of the previous year. Our yields were much improved, averaging 175 bushel per acre for corn and 50 bu/ac for soybeans . Several new developments were undertaken at the farm in the 2013 season. We established an area for research where grazing is integrated with crop production – so we now have some scope to conduct research looking at the effects of how grazing crop residues, cover crops and annual forages impacts crop productivity and soil health. Working with Chris Hay from the Ag. and Biological Systems Engineering Dept. at …

Assessing Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists’ Attitudes Toward And Barriers To The Use Of Evidence-Based Anesthesia Practice, Laurie E. Parkman

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Translational and Clinical Research Projects

Evidence-based practice is the integration and synthesis of the best research evidence with clinical expertise and patient values. Use of evidence-based practice decreases variability in care and improves patient outcomes. This research project assessed variables that inhibit the adoption of evidence-based practice into individual CRNAs’ practice. Ninety-two CRNAs in Georgia participated in an email survey to assess attitudes and perceived barriers to evidence-based practice. Attitudes toward evidence-based practice were assessed with the Evidence-Based Practice Questionnaire (EBPQ), and perceived barriers to the use of evidence-based practice were assessed with the BARRIERS scale. A Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient was computed to assess …

Bridging Patient Outcome Gap For Type 2 Diabetes : Can We Bridge Physician Practices To Produce Results Achieved In Evidence-Based Lifestyle Intervention Research?, Brenda Killen Johnson

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

The United States is abounding in the prevalence and incidence of avoidable chronic diseases, and high among these diseases is type 2 diabetes. Further, according to the National Institute of Health (NIH) Common Fund, 40% of harmful health behaviors is what contributes to chronic diseases, such as type 2 diabetes. NIH noted there are few personalized, effective ways to inspire people to change their behaviors in the shortterm, but if done, this behavior is not sustained long-term (The NIH Common Fund, 2011). Yet, this research discovered a Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) is one of these few personalized, effective interventions that …

Educating The Masses: Human Attitudes Affecting Reef Health, Ashley Wiehl

HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations

About two thirds of the world’s population lives within 60 km of a coastline, however many members of the public do not recognize the importance of the nearby coral reef ecosystems. Although reef degradation is currently occurring at alarming rates, there is hope for the future of coral reef health. It is proven that humans have a large effect on the current health of coral reefs. This thesis aims to determine how marine scientists and educators can best influence the general public to affect behaviors to improve reef health. To do this involves taking analyzing the many effects of human …

Exploration Of Ethnic Differences Between Hispanic And Marshallese Mothers' Child Body Perceptions And Factors That Impact Childhood Obesity, Ashley Paige Latimer

The Eleanor Mann School of Nursing Undergraduate Honors Theses

Childhood obesity is on the rise in the United States, especially among the Southern states and in minority ethnic groups. This condition is a known contributor to many chronic diseases, such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease, which develop in early adulthood. The Marshallese people - whose population is higher in Northwest Arkansas than anywhere else in the contiguous United States - have a high incidence of obesity and diabetes. Additionally, the Hispanic population per capita in Northwest Arkansas is more than triple that of the state of Arkansas, and have comparable obesity rates to the Marshallese population. The purposes of …
