The purpose of this project was to assess tree susceptibility to invasive tree pest outbreaks in a Central-Illinois urban park. Tree biodiversity in Maxwell Park, located in the Town of Normal, Illinois, was evaluated assuming that the greater the tree biodiversity in a park, the more resilient the park would be to future invasive tree pest outbreaks. The Town of Normal Parks and Recreation Department served as the community partner for this project. By determining Maxwell Park’s current level of biodiversity, proposed new trees for future replacement plantings could be identified to help increase biodiversity and decrease the potential for …

Assessing The Indoor Tanning Behaviors And Risk Of Skin Cancer Among Illinois Wesleyan University Students, Ellen Cornelius '14 Dec 2013

Assessing The Indoor Tanning Behaviors And Risk Of Skin Cancer Among Illinois Wesleyan University Students, Ellen Cornelius '14

Outstanding Senior Seminar Papers

The purpose of this research is to assess the indoor tanning behaviors of students at Illinois Wesleyan University (IWU) in Bloomington, Illinois and formulate strategies to reduce students’ risk of skin cancer. Skin cancer is widespread, and is the second most common cancer among people aged 15-24 years. There is strong evidence to support that many skin cancer cases seen today could have been avoided if the individual had never used an indoor tanning device. Research suggests the use of indoor tanning devices is popular among college-aged females in the US, thus persuading this demographic to reduce their indoor tanning …

Daily Mood-Drinking Slopes As Predictiors: A New Take On Drinking Motives And Related Outcomes, Cynthia D. Mohr, Deborah L. Brannan, Staci Jean Wendt, Laurie Marie Jacobs, Robert Randon Wright, Mo Wang

Psychology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Motivational models of alcohol consumption have articulated the manner in which positive and negative experiences motivate drinking in unique social contexts (e.g., Cooper, Frone, Russell & Mudar, 1995). Daily process methodology, in which daily events, moods and drinking behaviors are reported daily or multiple times per day, has been used to examine behavioral patterns that are consistent with discrete motivations. We advance the notion that repeated patterns of drinking in various social contexts as a function of positive or negative mood increases can provide evidence of individual-level if-then drinking signatures, which in turn can predict drinking-related outcomes. The purpose of …

Evaluating Economic Impacts Of Switchgrass Harvest Time, Nathanial Elsworth Cahill

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This thesis deals with cost of production for cellulosic energy crops of switchgrass, miscanthus, and energy sorghum. The first chapter explains the rationale for development of decision support software called Energy Crop Analysis & Planning (ENCAP) and Switchgrass Harvest Date, Yield, Nutrient Removal Estimator (SHYNE). The second chapter examines harvest date implications on yield, nutrient removal, opportunity cost of modified sale dates, and post-harvest storage losses. This harvest date analysis leads to a profit maximizing harvest date from the perspective of the producer. While this harvest date may be optimal for the producer, biorefineries may be interested in sourcing switchgrass …

Analysis Of Mirna-29a Expression In Porcine Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cells Using Quantitative Reverse Transcription Polymerase Chain Reaction, Sunaree Nantakhruea, Porntippa Lekcharoensuk, Win Surachetpong

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small non coding RNA that regulate gene expression as post transcriptional regulators in mammalian tissues. One of the miRNAs that participates in mammalian immune response is miR-29a. Despite the limited information of miR-29a in porcine cells, it is interesting to determine whether miR-29a involves in immune regulation in pig. In this study, we developed a quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction using SYBR detection system to examine the expression of primary miR-29a (pri-miR-29a) in porcine peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) in the presence of mitogen. PBMCs were stimulated with concanavalin A (Con A) at a concentration of …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The increasing demand coupled with expanding installation of distributed resources call for the development of smart technologies to control and optimize distribution system operations. In this paper, a distributed generation and storage optimization algorithm is proposed using pricing signals as distribution locational marginal pricing (DLMP). This signal is used to optimize the day-ahead operation planning of distributed generation and energy storage. A distribution level state estimation algorithm is also designed. The main conclusion is that the proposed optimal control and state estimation will improve the energy efficiency and economic benefits in a digitally controlled distribution power system. © 2013 IEEE.

Juvenile Pariahs, Amy E. Halbrook Dec 2013

Juvenile Pariahs, Amy E. Halbrook

UC Law Journal

Under federal and some state laws, juveniles who have been adjudicated delinquent for sex offenses can be required to register on sex offender registries for extended periods or life. In some jurisdictions, lifetime sex offender registration, community notification, and other sex offender restrictions are mandatory. This Article explores whether mandatory lifetime sex offender registration, community notification and other sex offender restrictions violate the Eighth Amendment’s guarantee against cruel and unusual punishment as applied to juveniles. Citing Roper v. Simmons and Graham v. Florida, the United States Supreme Court recently held in Miller v. Alabama that assigning mandatory life-without-parole prison sentences to …

The Antitrust Implications Of Filing “Sham” Citizen Petitions With The Fda, Matthew Avery, William Newsom, Brian Hahn Dec 2013

The Antitrust Implications Of Filing “Sham” Citizen Petitions With The Fda, Matthew Avery, William Newsom, Brian Hahn

UC Law Journal

The First Amendment protects the right of all citizens to petition the government. The Food and Drug Administration (the “FDA”) has provided a means by which citizens or interested entities can voice their concerns to the FDA by filing a so-called “citizen petition.” However, some brand-name pharmaceutical companies have abused this process by filing baseless petitions with the FDA in an effort to delay generic competition. Such anticompetitive activity is generally protected by the Noerr- Pennington doctrine, which grants antitrust immunity to activity that involves petitioning the government for redress. However, the immunity does not apply to “sham” petitions, the …

From Sex For Pleasure To Sex For Parenthood: How The Law Manufactures Mothers, Beth A. Burkstrand-Reid

UC Law Journal

In Sargon Enterprises, Inc. v. University of Southern California, the California Supreme Court decided arguably the most important expert testimony decision that it has rendered in at least two decades. Prior to Sargon, California appeared steadfastly committed to the classic “general acceptance” test, which required judges to assess whether an expert’s theory or technique had gained general acceptance in the relevant fields. In 1993, in Daubert v. Merrell Dow Pharmaceuticals, Inc., the United States Supreme Court announced a new empirical validation test. In the years since 1993, most state courts adopted some version of Daubert, but until Sargon the California …

Note – Internalizing The External Costs Of Medical Device Preemption, David Chang Dec 2013

Note – Internalizing The External Costs Of Medical Device Preemption, David Chang

UC Law Journal

Medical device preemption is highly controversial because it provides medical device companies with immunity from state tort claims. Congress provided medical device companies with preemption in 1976 because it was concerned that medical device companies were being overwhelmed by the costs of litigation. Congress feared that this was destroying the incentive for medical device companies to develop risky but innovative life-saving devices.Today, the dark side of medical device preemption has come to light. Medical device preemption fails to require medical device companies to account for harms that their products create for society. Medical device companies have been able to externalize …
