Htert Promoter Polymorphism, -1327c>T, Is Associated With The Risk Of Epithelial Cancer, Toshihiko Iizuka, Motoji Sawabe, Kaiyo Takubo, Miao Liu, Yukio Homma, Motofumi Suzuki, Tomio Arai

Internal Medicine Publications

Telomeres are repetitive nucleotide sequences that cap the end of eukaryotic chromosomes. Attrition of these structures has been associated with carcinogenesis in many tissues, and therefore, they are essential for chromosome stabilization. Telomeres are maintained by telomerase complexes, of which human telomerase reverse transcriptase (hTERT) is an essential component. A functional polymorphism, -1327C>T (rs2735940), located in the promoter of the hTERT gene is associated with telomere length in peripheral blood leukocytes. We hypothesized that this polymorphism might affect susceptibility to various epithelial malignancies. The -1327C>T polymorphism was examined in 1,551 consecutive autopsy cases (mean age, 80.3 years), and …

Background

Adult cardiorespiratory fitness and muscle strength are related to all-cause and cardiovascular mortality. Both are possibly related to birth weight, but it is unclear what the importance is of genetic, maternal and placental factors in these associations.

Design

Peak oxygen uptake and measures of strength, flexibility and balance were obtained yearly during adolescence (10–18 years) in 114 twin pairs in the Leuven Longitudinal Twin Study. Their birth weights had been collected prospectively within the East Flanders Prospective Twin Survey.

Results

We identified linear associations between birth weight and adolescent vertical jump (b = 1.96 cm per kg birth weight, …

Few U.S. Public Health Schools Offer Courses On Palliative And End-Of-Life Care Policy, Dale Lupu, Caroline Deneszczuk, Tara Leystra, Rebecca Mckinnon, Victoria Seng

Physical Therapy and Health Care Sciences Faculty Publications

Background: Palliative care has been identified by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a critical policy element for the relief of suffering, yet palliative care policy receives minimal attention in mainstream U.S. public health journals, conferences, or textbooks. In the ’90s, documentation of the lack of attention to end-of-life and palliative care in medical and nursing curricula led to concerted efforts to improve medical and nursing education in palliative care. No such educational effort has yet been directed toward public health professionals.

Objective: This study's objective was to quantify current course offerings covering palliative and end-of-life care from a public …

Alzheimer's Disease Literacy In The African American Community, Angel Mckenzie Watson Jan 2013

Alzheimer's Disease Literacy In The African American Community, Angel Mckenzie Watson

Theses

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a public health crisis in the African American (AA) community, as evidenced by both increased prevalence and familial risk among African Americans. African Americans are two times as likely to suffer with this disease, are diagnosed later in the disease process, and are considered to have less factual information about AD when compared to their white counterparts. Late diagnosis has been associated with significantly higher dementia-related morbidity and health care costs. Moreover, studies have shown that patients with increased health literacy have better health outcomes. Therefore, we want to assess how well African Americans understand Alzheimer's …

Physical Mistreatment In Persons With Alzheimer’S Disease, Gregory Paveza, Carla Vandeweerd, Margaret Walsh, Jaime Corvin Jan 2013

Physical Mistreatment In Persons With Alzheimer’S Disease, Gregory Paveza, Carla Vandeweerd, Margaret Walsh, Jaime Corvin

Library Scholarship

Physical mistreatment has been estimated to affect 2 million older persons each year and dramatically affects health outcomes. While researchers have attempted to examine risk factors for specific forms of abuse, many have been able to focus on only victim or perpetrator characteristics, or a limited number of psychosocial variables at any one time. Additionally, data on risk factors for subgroups such as persons with Alzheimer’s disease who may have heightened and/or unique risk profiles has also been limited. This paper examines risk for physical violence in caregiver/patient dyads who participated in the Aggression and Violence in Community-Based Alzheimer’s Families …

The Adjustment Of Asian American Families To The U.S. Context: The Ecology Of Strengths And Stress, Yan Ruth Xia, Kieu Anh Do, Xiaolin Xie Jan 2013

The Adjustment Of Asian American Families To The U.S. Context: The Ecology Of Strengths And Stress, Yan Ruth Xia, Kieu Anh Do, Xiaolin Xie

Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications

The number of Asian American families is on the rise, making it 4.6% of the total US population. Asian American families are also a diverse group, comprising many different ancestries, cultural variations, and countries of origin. However, there remains a paucity of research focusing on Asian American Families. The media’s depiction of them as a Model Minority is doing a disservice to this population group. Because of this stereotype, many issues and challenges that this group encounters may not gain adequate attention. Some of these issues include acculturative stress, intimate partner violence, lack of a social support network, and intergenerational …

Development Of A Lateral Workplace Incivility Nurse Liaison Position In The Psychiatric Healthcare Setting, Christopher L. Brown

Nursing Theses and Capstone Projects

Workplace incivility is becoming commonplace in all work environments including health care. Research highlights the dangerous, distressing, and costly side effects of lateral workplace incivility (LWPI) including nursing staff's overall health, organizational commitment, and intent to stay. Historically, organizations have been considered safe work environments but LWPI has increased over the last several decades. There has also been limited research related to LWPI as it affects psychiatric healthcare staff and no study recommending a needs assessment or developing a position to educate and assist victims. The purpose of this project was to assess psychiatric healthcare staff's understanding and exposure to …

Chronic Delivery Of A Thrombospondin-1 Mimetic Decreases Skeletal Muscle Capillarity In Mice, Gerald N. Audet, Daniel Fulks, Janelle C. Stricker, I Mark Olfert Jan 2013

Chronic Delivery Of A Thrombospondin-1 Mimetic Decreases Skeletal Muscle Capillarity In Mice, Gerald N. Audet, Daniel Fulks, Janelle C. Stricker, I Mark Olfert

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Angiogenesis is an essential process for normal skeletal muscle function. There is a growing body of evidence suggesting that thrombospondin-1 (TSP-1), a potent antiangiogenic protein in tumorigenesis, is an important regulator of both physiological and pathological skeletal muscle angiogenesis. We tested the hypothesis that chronic exposure to a TSP-1 mimetic (ABT-510), which targets the CD36 TSP-1 receptor, would decrease skeletal muscle capillarity as well as alter the balance between positive and negative angiogenic proteins under basal conditions. Osmotic minipumps with either ABT-510 or vehicle (5% dextrose) were implanted subcutaneously in the subscapular region of C57/BL6 mice for 14 days. When …

Caregiver anecdotes attest that music and photographs play an important role for family members diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease (AD), even those with severe AD. Tablets and iPads, which are prevalent, can be utilized with dementia patients in portraying favorite music and family photographs via apps developed in close partnership with geriatric facilities. This study addresses cognitive functioning and quality of life for people diagnosed with dementia via technology. Research has shown that technology instruments such as iPods, help stimulate those with dementia. This study focuses on innovative devices such as iPads and tablets, which are mainstream and easy to use, …

Drosophila Melanogaster Selection For Survival After Infection With Bacillus Cereus Spores: Evolutionary Genetic And Phenotypic Investigations Of Respiration And Movement, Junjie Ma, Andrew K. Benson, Stephen D. Kachman, Deidra J. Jacobsen, Lawrence G. Harshman

Department of Statistics: Faculty Publications

Laboratory populations of D.melanogaster have been subjected to selection for survival after live spores of B. cereus were introduced as a pathogenic agent. The present study was designed to investigate correlated traits: respiration as ametabolic trait and movement as a behavioral trait. An underlying hypothesiswas that the evolution of increased survival after B. cereus infection exerts ametabolic cost associated with elevated immunity and this would be detected by increased respiration rates. There was support for this hypothesis in the male response to selection, but not for selected-line females. Two phenotypic effects were also observed in the study. Females especially showed a …

Occupational Engagement And Health In Older South Asian Immigrants, Sheama R. Krishnagiri, Erin Fuller, Lesley Ruda, Sadhna Diwan

Faculty Publications

The purpose of this study was to investigate the elements that shape how healthy active South Asian elder immigrants engage in daily activities to maintain their health. A descriptive grounded theory approach was employed using semi-structured interviews and a daily activity chart. Convenience sampling was used to recruit 12 South Asian elders, 7 males and 5 females, who immigrated after retirement to the South San Francisco Bay area. Open, axial, and selective coding of the transcribed data led to two broad themes, control and interdependence. These themes may be viewed as dynamic and interconnected forces that shape and determine the …
