Religiously Unaffiliated Social Workers In Health Care Settings : Working With Religiously Affiliated Terminally Ill Cancer Patients, Ileana G. Sansano Jan 2013

Religiously Unaffiliated Social Workers In Health Care Settings : Working With Religiously Affiliated Terminally Ill Cancer Patients, Ileana G. Sansano

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

The purpose of this study was to explore how nonreligious social workers respond to religious terminally ill cancer patients within healthcare settings. There is limited research focused on the experience of the nonreligious social worker. Thus, a qualitative, exploratory study was chosen as an appropriate research design. This qualitative study used a flexible interview format comprised of semi-structured open- and closed-ended questions presented to 5 nonreligious oncology social workers in the United States. The findings demonstrate that most or all of the oncology social workers had similar experiences: with a supervisor or work agency addressing how to work with patients …

Family Socioeconomic Status And Children's Reading Ability: The Buffering Effect Of Parental Social Support, Casey Dexter Jan 2013

Family Socioeconomic Status And Children's Reading Ability: The Buffering Effect Of Parental Social Support, Casey Dexter

Wayne State University Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to better understand the protective effect that social support has on the development of reading in children from a range of SES backgrounds. Because other studies have suggested the importance of teacher quality on children's reading ability, this was also tested. This study utilized a sample taken from the public-use version of the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study-Kindergarten Cohort (ECLS-K), a large-scale, nationally representative sample of children attending kindergarten in the United States in the fall of the 1998-1999 academic year and their families, teachers, and schools. As expected, family SES and the availability of …

Look Out – It’S Your Off-Peak Time Of Day! Time Of Day Matters More For Alerting Than For Orienting Or Executive Attention, Marisa Knight, M Mather Jan 2013

Look Out – It’S Your Off-Peak Time Of Day! Time Of Day Matters More For Alerting Than For Orienting Or Executive Attention, Marisa Knight, M Mather

Psychology

Background—Older adults’ peak performance on memory and cognitive inhibition tasks tends to be in the morning while younger adults’ peak performance tends to be in the afternoon. Although these tasks require efficient attentional processes for optimal performance, previous research examining age differences in the effects of time of day has not measured the distinct aspects of attention quantified by the attentional network test (ANT; Fan, McCandliss, Sommer, & Posner, 2002).

Methods—We examined the relationship between time of testing and the efficiency of alerting, orienting and executive attention networks by randomly assigning younger (18–28 years; N = 27, M = 21.37 …

Positive Clinical Neuroscience: Explorations In Positive Neurology, N. Kapur, J. Cole, T. Manly, Indre Viskontas, A. Ninteman, L. Hasher, A. Pascual-Leone Jan 2013

Positive Clinical Neuroscience: Explorations In Positive Neurology, N. Kapur, J. Cole, T. Manly, Indre Viskontas, A. Ninteman, L. Hasher, A. Pascual-Leone

Psychology

Disorders of the brain and its sensory organs have traditionally been associated with deficits in movement, perception, cognition, emotion, and behavior. It is increasingly evident, however, that positive phenomena may also occur in such conditions, with implications for the individual, science, medicine, and for society. This article provides a selective review of such positive phenomena – enhanced function after brain lesions, better-than-normal performance in people with sensory loss, creativity associated with neurological disease, and enhanced performance associated with aging. We propose that, akin to the well-established field of positive psychology and the emerging field of positive clinical psychology, the nascent …

Understanding Resource Needs Of Persons With Dementia And Their Caregivers, Rosanne Dizazzo-Miller, Fredrick D. Pociask, Preethy Samuel

Department of Health Care Sciences

The purpose of this study was to understand the lived experiences of family caregivers of persons with dementia in accessing resources as the disease progresses, using four focus groups. Findings indicate differences in caregiver needs by stage of dementia of the care recipient. Service professionals noted family-level dynamics as possibly hindering care and voiced concern with limited mental health services. The need to educate caregivers on the scope of available services and applicable information was clear.

School of Psychology Publications

This convergent mixed methods study examined 35 healthy, independent living individuals' (over 85 years) perceptions of their relationship with their primary health provider (PHP) and health practices. The relationship between PHP relationship perceptions and locus of control (LOC), resilience, and self-efficacy was explored through surveys and interviews. The majority indicated they visited their PHP just for preventative care; the number of PHP visits per year was significantly lower than reported for individuals over 85 by the CDC, possible reasons for this finding are provided. A positive relationship between LOC, resiliency, and self-efficacy for the oldest-old was found. Few participants indicated …

Epigenetics In Research And Practice, Debra E. Lyon, Susan G. Dorsey, Leorey Saligan Jan 2013

Epigenetics In Research And Practice, Debra E. Lyon, Susan G. Dorsey, Leorey Saligan

School of Nursing Publications

This special issue focused on the intersection of epigenetics with nursing research and practice. The first paper in this series addresses the role of epigenetic modifications in pain and analgesia response, highlighting the need for future research on epigenomic modification in the development of chronic pain, and summarizes the therapeutic potential to alter epigenetic processes to improve health outcomes. The second studies the epigenetic alterations and an increased frequency of micronuclei in women with fibromyalgia, highlighting a difference in an epigenetic biomarker in participants versus controls. The third paper explored the role of epigenetics in critical illness and the need …

Recruiting For Epigenetic Research: Facilitating The Informed Consent Process, Nancy Jallo, Debra E. Lyon, Patricia Anne Kinser, Debra Lynch Kelly, Victoria Menzies, Colleen Jackson-Cook Jan 2013

Recruiting For Epigenetic Research: Facilitating The Informed Consent Process, Nancy Jallo, Debra E. Lyon, Patricia Anne Kinser, Debra Lynch Kelly, Victoria Menzies, Colleen Jackson-Cook

School of Nursing Publications

Because the effects of epigenetic (gene-environment interaction) changes have been associated with numerous adverse health states, the study of epigenetic measures provides exciting research opportunities for biobehavioral scientists. However, recruitment for studies focusing on any aspect of genetics poses challenges. Multiple factors, including lack of knowledge regarding a research study, have been identified as barriers to recruitment. Strengthening the informed consent process through extended discussion has been found to be effective in recruiting for research studies in general, yet there is a paucity of information that focused on such a recruitment strategy for epigenetic studies. In this paper, we share …

Control Group Design: Enhancing Rigor In Research Of Mind-Body Therapies For Depression, Patricia Anne Kinser, Jo Lynne W. Robins Jan 2013

Control Group Design: Enhancing Rigor In Research Of Mind-Body Therapies For Depression, Patricia Anne Kinser, Jo Lynne W. Robins

School of Nursing Publications

Although a growing body of research suggests that mind-body therapies may be appropriate to integrate into the treatment of depression, studies consistently lack methodological sophistication particularly in the area of control groups. In order to better understand the relationship between control group selection and methodological rigor, we provide a brief review of the literature on control group design in yoga and tai chi studies for depression, and we discuss challenges we have faced in the design of control groups for our recent clinical trials of these mind-body complementary therapies for women with depression. To address the multiple challenges of research …

Epigenetic Alterations And An Increased Frequency Of Micronuclei In Women With Fibromyalgia, Victoria Menzies, Debra E. Lyon, Kellie J. Archer, Kimberly Jones, Guimin Gao, Timothy P. York, Colleen Jackson-Cook Jan 2013

Epigenetic Alterations And An Increased Frequency Of Micronuclei In Women With Fibromyalgia, Victoria Menzies, Debra E. Lyon, Kellie J. Archer, Kimberly Jones, Guimin Gao, Timothy P. York, Colleen Jackson-Cook

School of Nursing Publications

Fibromyalgia (FM), characterized by chronic widespread pain, fatigue, and cognitive/mood disturbances, leads to reduced workplace productivity and increased healthcare expenses. To determine if acquired epigenetic/genetic changes are associated with FM, we compared the frequency of spontaneously occurring micronuclei (MN) and genome-wide methylation patterns in women with FM () to those seen in comparably aged healthy controls ( (MN); (methylation)). The mean (sd) MN frequency of women with FM (51.4 (21.9)) was significantly higher than that of controls (15.8 (8.5)) (; df = 1; ). Significant differences ( sites) in methylation patterns were observed between cases and controls considering a 5% …
