Teacher Design Using Online Learning Resources: A Comparative Case Study Of Science And Mathematics Teachers, Mimi Recker
Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences Faculty Publications
Using a comparative case study design, this paper explores the impacts of a technology-related professional development (TTPD) design aimed at helping science and mathematics teachers design classroom activities using the wealth of resources available on the Internet. Using the lens of curricular adaption and the notion of teachers’ varying pedagogical design capacity, we analyzed the experiences of four teachers in terms of the kinds of instructional activities teachers designed, how these were supported with online resources, and teachers’ perceptions of impacts on student learning. Findings suggested that participants used a variety of personally relevant design strategies when applying TTPD concepts …

Manganese superoxide dismutase, encoded by the Sod2 gene, is a ubiquitously expressed mitochondrial antioxidant enzyme that is essential for mammalian life. Mice born with constitutive genetic knockout of Sod2 do not survive the neonatal stage, which renders the longitudinal study of the biochemical and metabolic effects of Sod2 loss difficult. However, multiple studies have demonstrated that tissue-specific knockout of Sod2 in murine liver yields no observable gross pathology or injury to the mouse. We hypothesized that Sod2 loss may have sub-pathologic effects on liver biology, including the acquisition of reactive oxygen species-mediated mitochondrial DNA mutations. To evaluate this, we established …

County-Specific Net Migration By Five-Year Age Groups, Hispanic Origin, Race And Sex 2000-2010, Richelle Winkler, Kenneth M. Johnson, Cheng Cheng, Paul R. Voss, Katherine J. Curtis
Sociology
This report documents the methodology used to prepare county-level, net migration estimates by five-year age cohorts and sex, and by race and Hispanic origin, for the intercensal period from 2000 to 2010. The estimates were prepared using a vital statistics version of the forward cohort residual method (Siegel and Hamilton 1952) following the techniques used to prepare the 1990 to 2000 net migration estimates (Voss, McNiven, Johnson, Hammer, and Fuguitt 2004) as described in detail below. These numbers (and the net migration rates derivable from them) extend the set of decennial estimates of net migration that have been produced following …

Population and Public Health Sciences Faculty Publications
The aging of the baby boom generation and health care policy changes represented by the Affordable Care act create challenges for the long term care industry in America. In 2011 the first of the baby boomers turned 65 years old. By 2030 a total of 78 million baby boomers, 19% of the population, will be 65 or more years old and eligible for Medicare (U.S. Census Bureau 2010). Discussions of potential health care worker shortages often focus on the need for more physicians and nurses to care for an aging population. These changes are putting pressure on long term care …

An Intervention To Improve Adherence And Management Of Symptoms For Patients Prescribed Oral Chemotherapy Agents: An Exploratory Study, Sandra L. Spoelstra, Barbara A. Given, Charles W. Given, Marcia Grant, Alla Sikorskii, Mei You, Veronica Decker
Peer Reviewed Articles
Background: The use of oral chemotherapy agents to treat cancer has increased. Patients are responsible for adhering to complex dosing regimens, while monitoring and managing symptoms from side effects of the chemotherapy at home.
Objective: This study examined an intervention to manage symptoms and promote adherence to oral chemotherapy agents.
Intervention and Methods: A 3 group exploratory pilot study determined how an Automated Voice Response (AVR) system alone (N=40), or the AVR with strategies to manage symptoms and adherence (N=40), or the AVR with strategies to manage adherence (N=39) reduced symptom severity and improved adherence. Participants received a Symptom Management …
Stroke Survivors Control The Temporal Structure Of Variability During Reaching In Dynamic Environments, Mukul Mukherjee, Panagiotis Koutakis, K.-C. Siu, Pierre B. Fayad, Nikolaos Stergiou
Stroke Survivors Control The Temporal Structure Of Variability During Reaching In Dynamic Environments, Mukul Mukherjee, Panagiotis Koutakis, K.-C. Siu, Pierre B. Fayad, Nikolaos Stergiou
Journal Articles
Learning to control forces is known to reduce the amount of movement variability (e.g., standard deviation; SD) while also altering the temporal structure of movement variability (e.g., approximate entropy; ApEn). Such variability control has not been explored in stroke survivors during reaching movements in dynamic environments. Whether augmented feedback affects such variability control, is also unknown. Chronic stroke survivors, assigned randomly to a control/experimental group, learned reaching movements in a dynamically changing environment while receiving either true feedback of their movement (control) or augmented visual feedback (experimental). Hand movement variability was analyzed using SD and ApEn. A significant change in …

Functional Impairment, Illness Burden, And Depressive Symptoms In Older Adults: Does Type Of Social Relationship Matter?, Joshua P. Hatfield, Jameson K. Hirsch, Jeffrey M. Lyness
ETSU Faculty Works
Objective: The nature of interpersonal relationships, whether supportive or critical, may affect the association between health status and mental health outcomes. We examined the potential moderating effects of social support, as a buffer, and family criticism, as an exacerbating factor, on the association between illness burden, functional impairment and depressive symptoms.
Methods: Our sample of 735 older adults, 65 years and older, was recruited from internal and family medicine primary care offices. Trained interviewers administered the Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression, Duke Social Support Inventory, and Family Emotional Involvement and Criticism Scale. Physician-rated assessments of health, including the Karnofsky Performance …

Fatigability And Recovery Of Arm Muscles With Advanced Age For Dynamic And Isometric Contractions, Tejin Yoon, Bonnie Schlinder-Delap, Sandra K. Hunter
Exercise Science Faculty Research and Publications
This study determined whether age-related mechanisms can increase fatigue of arm muscles during maximal velocity dynamic contractions, as it occurs in the lower limb. We compared elbow flexor fatigue of young (n = 10, 20.8 ± 2.7 years) and old men (n = 16, 73.8 ± 6.1 years) during and in recovery from a dynamic and an isometric postural fatiguing task. Each task was maintained until failure while supporting a load equivalent to 20% of maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC) torque. Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) was used to assess supraspinal fatigue (superimposed twitch, SIT) and muscle relaxation. Time …

Family Caregivers: The Primary Providers Of Assistance To People With Functional Limitations And Chronic Impairments, Carol O'Shaughnessy
Family Caregivers: The Primary Providers Of Assistance To People With Functional Limitations And Chronic Impairments, Carol O'Shaughnessy
National Health Policy Forum
An extensive body of research conducted over the past several decades has documented that family or other unpaid caregivers provide the majority of care to people who need assistance because of functional limitations or multiple and complex chronic conditions. Families play a central role not only in assisting impaired family members with personal care needs, but also in helping them coordinate health care and supportive services, and, increasingly, providing and/or supervising home-based medical care. This paper presents background information on family caregiving, briefly describes federal programs that provide direct assistance to caregivers, and discusses possible future policy and practice directions.
