Publications and Research
The ultimate goal of this multi-article series is to develop a methodology to generate continuous fields of tree height and biomass. The first paper demonstrated the need for Allometric Scaling and Resource Limitation (ASRL) model optimization and its ability to generate spatially continuous fields of tree heights over the continental USA at coarse (1 km) spatial resolution. The objective of this second paper is to provide an assessment of that approach at site scale, specifically at 12 FLUXNET sites where more accurate data are available. Estimates of tree heights from the Geoscience Laser Altimeter System (GLAS) waveform data are used …

Pan-Arctic Distributions Of Continental Runoff In The Arctic Ocean, Cédric G. Fichot, Karl Kaiser, Stanford B. Hooker, Rainer M.W. Amon, Marcel Babin, Simon Bélanger, Sally A. Walker, Ronald Benner
Pan-Arctic Distributions Of Continental Runoff In The Arctic Ocean, Cédric G. Fichot, Karl Kaiser, Stanford B. Hooker, Rainer M.W. Amon, Marcel Babin, Simon Bélanger, Sally A. Walker, Ronald Benner
Faculty Publications
Continental runoff is a major source of freshwater, nutrients and terrigenous material to the Arctic Ocean. As such, it influences water column stratification, light attenuation, surface heating, gas exchange, biological productivity and carbon sequestration. Increasing river discharge and thawing permafrost suggest that the impacts of continental runoff on these processes are changing. Here, a new optical proxy was developed and implemented with remote sensing to determine the first pan-Arctic distribution of terrigenous dissolved organic matter (tDOM) and continental runoff in the surface Arctic Ocean. Retrospective analyses revealed connections between the routing of North American runoff and the recent freshening of …

Grassroots Ngo Regulation And China's Local Legal Culture, Anna Jane High
Grassroots Ngo Regulation And China's Local Legal Culture, Anna Jane High
Socio-Legal Review
Law-lauding ideology and rhetoric has been increasingly evident in China since the end of the Cultural Revolution. In conjunction nAth decades of rapid and prolfc legal institution-building, this has provded rich data for scholarship on the trajectory of China s legal system, and the nature of rule and order in modern Chinese society. Yet a solely law-centric approach to state regulation is not aposite to painting a complete picture o how order is maintained in the distinctly non-legal Chinese clture. Drang onfleldwork investigating non-state Chinese ophanage I argue that the surdval and proliferation of such quasi- or non-legal grassroots non-government …

Nitrogen Dynamics Of Switchgrass, Eastern Gamagrass And High Biomass Sorghum From Different Sources Of Chemical And Organic Nitrogen Fertilizers, Lucia Margarita Acosta Gamboa
Nitrogen Dynamics Of Switchgrass, Eastern Gamagrass And High Biomass Sorghum From Different Sources Of Chemical And Organic Nitrogen Fertilizers, Lucia Margarita Acosta Gamboa
Student Theses and Dissertations
Use of biomass to produce energy is a renewable source. A field experiment was established during 2009 in Northeast Arkansas to evaluate eastern gamagrass, switchgrass and biomass sorghum response to nitrogen fertilization on nitrogen dynamics and dry biomass yield. Nitrogen fertilizers included municipal biosolids, poultry litter, urea and a control. Throughout 2010 and 2011, switchgrass yielded greater biomass compared to gamagrass. Nitrogen fertilization increased yield compared to the control. In 2010, nitrogen use efficiency was greater for switchgrass compared to gamagrass. During 2011 NUE was lesser for biomass sorghum than for gamagrass. Switchgrass yielded greater biomass than gamagrass and biomass …

Testing Above- And Below-Canopy Representations Of Turbulent Fluxes In An Energy Balance Snowmelt Model, Vinod Mahat, David G. Tarboton, Noah P. Molotch
T.W. "Doc" Daniel Experimental Forest
Turbulent fluxes of sensible and latent heat are important processes in the surface energy balance that drives snowmelt. Modeling these fluxes in a forested environment is complicated because of the canopy effects on the wind field. This paper presents and tests a turbulent flux model developed to represent these processes in an energy balance snowmelt model. The goal is to model these processes using the readily available inputs of canopy height and leaf area index in a way that minimizes the number of parameters, state variables, and assumptions about hard to quantify processes. Selected periods from 9 years of eddy-covariance …

A Commentary On Senate Bill 1: Kentucky’S Architecture Of Implementation, John Deatley, Sue Cain
Journal of Excellence in College Teaching and Learning
In 2009, a coalition of states began moving toward fewer, clearer, and higher standards for P-12 education and entry-level courses in postsecondary education. Spurred by the evidence that most state standards were not consistently providing students with the knowledge and skills to be ready for college and careers, the National Governors Association (NGA) and the Council of Chief State Schools Officers (CCSSO) began a process of developing standards that would align with college and work expectations; be clear, understandable, and consistent; include rigorous content and application of knowledge through high-order skills; build upon strengths and lessons of current state standards; …

The Relationship Between English Language Test Scores Among Nigerian High School Students And Teacher Beliefs About Language Teaching And Their Classroom Practices, Luke O. Iwuji
Wayne State University Dissertations
English language mastery is important to the academic achievement of high school students in Nigeria. As the official language of instruction in multi linguistic Nigerian schools, proficiency in English language is essential for the academic success of students in high schools. The purpose of the study is to examine the relationship between English language test scores among Nigerian high school students and teacher beliefs about language teaching and their classroom practices. Three research questions and associated hypotheses were addressed in this study. A total of 23 teachers, one from each high school in the Government District of Nigeria, participated in …

Book Review Of Go East, Young Man: Imagining The American West As The Orient By Richard V. Francaviglia, Christina E. Dando
Geography and Geology Faculty Publications
Historical geographer Richard Francaviglia tackles the intriguing imagery of the American west as orient in his latest book. Using vivid examples from the last two hundred years, Francaviglia illustrates the connections between the west and the middle and far east: distant lands associated in western culture with ancient history and sacred landscapes, but also with sensuality and hedonism. Francaviglia argues that ‘Orientalism was a powerful force in shaping the way newcomers encountered, and made sense of, the people and places they found in the North American West’ (p. 13).

A Study Of So2 Emissions And Ground Surface Displacements At Lastarria Volcano, Antofagasta Region, Northern Chile, Lucie Guihem Krewcun
A Study Of So2 Emissions And Ground Surface Displacements At Lastarria Volcano, Antofagasta Region, Northern Chile, Lucie Guihem Krewcun
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open
Lastarria volcano (Chile) is located at the North-West margin of the `Lazufre' ground inflation signal (37x45 km²), constantly uplifting at a rate of ~2.5 cm/year since 1996 (Pritchard and Simons 2002; Froger et al. 2007). The Lastarria volcano has the double interest to be superimposed on a second, smaller-scale inflation signal and to be the only degassing area of the Lazufre signal. In this project, we compared daily SO2 burdens recorded by AURA's OMI mission for 2005-2010 with Ground Surface Displacements (GSD) calculated from the Advanced Synthetic Aperture Radar (ASAR) images for 2003-2010.
We found a constant maximum displacement rate …
Tandem-X High Resolution Dems And Their Applications To Flow Modeling, Kelly M. Wooten
Tandem-X High Resolution Dems And Their Applications To Flow Modeling, Kelly M. Wooten
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open
Lava flow modeling can be a powerful tool in hazard assessments; however, the ability to produce accurate models is usually limited by a lack of high resolution, up-to-date Digital Elevation Models (DEMs). This is especially obvious in places such as Kilauea Volcano (Hawaii), where active lava flows frequently alter the terrain. In this study, we use a new technique to create high resolution DEMs on Kilauea using synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data from the TanDEM-X (TDX) satellite. We convert raw TDX SAR data into a geocoded DEM using GAMMA software [Werner et al., 2000]. This process can be completed in …
