Is Smart Growth Fair Growth: Do Urban Growth Boundaries Keep Out Racial Minorities?, Elizabeth P. Ruddiman Jan 2013

Is Smart Growth Fair Growth: Do Urban Growth Boundaries Keep Out Racial Minorities?, Elizabeth P. Ruddiman

The Journal of Public and Professional Sociology

Objective: I investigate whether urban growth boundaries (UGBs) contribute to the exclusion of racial minorities and/or have an effect on levels of racial residential segregation. Methods: I study 43 pairs of places throughout the U.S. (each pair is comprised of a place with a UGB and a place without a UGB but is otherwise similar to its partner). I use Census data and a residential segregation index from 1990 and 2000 for blacks, Hispanics, and whites. I compare changes in the number of in-migrating blacks and Hispanics to these pairs of cities as well as the amount of …

Academic Writing In An Islamic Context: Strategies And Methods, Chad B. Mclennan Mr.

MA TESOL Collection

What kind of affordances do students from different cultures require? More specifically, how can a Western teacher best help students from an observant Islamic background? These were the questions that began my quest into Islamic society for an answer. This essay offers a method where a teacher uses an essay to teach an essay. This is a flexible and highly effective way to get more advanced students producing higher quality academic essays.

Publications and Research

A methodology to generate spatially continuous fields of tree heights with an optimized Allometric Scaling and Resource Limitations (ASRL) model is reported in this first of a multi-part series of articles. Model optimization is performed with the Geoscience Laser Altimeter System (GLAS) waveform data. This methodology is demonstrated by mapping tree heights over forested lands in the continental USA (CONUS) at 1 km spatial resolution. The study area is divided into 841 eco-climatic zones based on three forest types, annual total precipitation classes (30 mm intervals) and annual average temperature classes (2 °C intervals). Three model parameters (area of single …

Destination Image Built By The Cinema: The Case Of “Basilicata Coast To Coast”, Angelo Bencivenga, Livio Chiarullo, Delio Colangelo, Annalisa Percoco

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

Film tourism, meaning the phenomenon that is born of the desire to visit film locations, has been the object of increasing attention in recent years. This document presents the results of a field research conducted with the aim of analysing the effects of the film "Basilicata Coast to Coast", by Rocco Papaleo, on tourism in Basilicata, (a small region in the South of Italy) after its success at the box office and several Italian awards. The film, planned with the involvement of local institutions and stakeholders, pursues the objective of promoting an area that is still largely unknown to national …

Case Studies On Water Security: Analysis Of System Complexity And The Role Of Institutions, Jacob D. Petersen-Perlman, Jennifer C. Veilleux, Matthew Zentner, Aaron T. Wolf Jan 2013

Case Studies On Water Security: Analysis Of System Complexity And The Role Of Institutions, Jacob D. Petersen-Perlman, Jennifer C. Veilleux, Matthew Zentner, Aaron T. Wolf

Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education

Water security is a challenge faced within many transboundary river basins. Identifying the resilient factors within a system may reduce water security concerns and enhance cooperation. In this paper, we are examining the dimensions of resilience as influenced by the rate of change and institutional capacity within river basins. Three case studies are analyzed for their water security capacity, including resilience and vulnerability, as well as institutional capacity.

The Evolutionary Role Of Physician Assistants Across The United States, Canada, And The United Kingdom, Brayden J. Gerrie, Elizabeth A. Holbrook Jan 2013

The Evolutionary Role Of Physician Assistants Across The United States, Canada, And The United Kingdom, Brayden J. Gerrie, Elizabeth A. Holbrook

International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 6(1) : 1-8, 2013. With physician shortages looming ominously on the horizon, healthcare systems across the globe are awaiting a surge of eager young doctors to enter the field. Much to the dismay of these systems, it does not appear that there will be a collective sigh of relief in the coming years. Fortunately there still remains a promising position to fill the gaps and potentially overcome the growing inundation of patients, shortage of general practice physicians, and ever growing underserved rural populations: the position of physician assistant (PA). Through this review, the evolution of …

Revealing the patterns and determinants of the spread of dengue virus (DENV) at local scales is central to understanding the epidemiology and evolution of this major human pathogen. We performed a phylogenetic analysis of the envelope (E) genes of DENV-1, -2, -3, and -4 isolates (involving 97, 23, 5, and 74 newly collected sequences, respectively) sampled from school-based cohort and village-based cluster studies in Kamphaeng Phet, Thailand, between 2004 and 2007. With these data, we sought to describe the spatial and temporal patterns of DENV spread within a rural population where a future vaccine efficacy trial is planned. Our analysis …

The Role Of Comparative Analysis In Borderlands Studies, Christine Brenner Jan 2013

The Role Of Comparative Analysis In Borderlands Studies, Christine Brenner

Public Policy and Public Affairs Faculty Publication Series

The paper explores the question, “What global core competencies can public administration glean from the field of borderlands studies?” Borderlands studies have traditionally focused on the geographic area on or near the frontier demarcation between nation states. Borderlands also function as buffering or mediating zones where often markedly different countries develop complex networked administrative systems to permit the passage of peoples and products across territorial boundaries. In this way borderlands often shape the administrative and policy decisions made in the centers of national power. This paper employs content analysis to review ten years of the Journal of Borderlands Studies (2011 …

Human Alienation And Fulfillment In Work: Insights From The Catholic Social Teachings, Ferdinand Tablan Jan 2013

Human Alienation And Fulfillment In Work: Insights From The Catholic Social Teachings, Ferdinand Tablan

Journal of Religion and Business Ethics

This paper is about the modern-day problem of human alienation and fulfillment in work from the perspective of the Catholic social thought. It analyses the symptoms and causes of work alienation, the meaning of work and its significance in the individual’s quest for fulfillment, and how the Catholic social teachings can shed light on the problems involved in transforming the world of work. Alienation in work affects one’s subjective and psychological fulfillment, but it is not ultimately dependent on material culture or economic models. The problem of alienation in work cannot be dealt with by simply modifying the production process …

Adult Chldren Of Male Military Combatants : Impacts Into Adulthood, Robert N. Smith Jan 2013

Adult Chldren Of Male Military Combatants : Impacts Into Adulthood, Robert N. Smith

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This study was undertaken to explore potential impacts occurring in adulthood stemming from individuals' childhood experiences of growing up in a household with a father who sustained combat-related trauma during the course of their military service. Numerous studies in recent years and decades have researched how military wartime or combat-related trauma can affect the lives of the soldiers who sustained the actual trauma, as well as exploring secondary traumatization and its effects on the family system upon their return home from combat. However, there has been little attention paid to the adult stage of life for individuals raised by a …
