Understanding Relational Space: Social Networks And Development In The Nob Hill Neighborhood Of Albuquerque, Thomas Scott Maddux Jan 2013

Understanding Relational Space: Social Networks And Development In The Nob Hill Neighborhood Of Albuquerque, Thomas Scott Maddux

Public Administration ETDs

The purpose of this research is to examine the social networks of the development community in the Nob Hill neighborhood of Albuquerque. The method for examining the social networks is social network analysis carried out using a survey tool as well as UCInet statistical software. The scope of the research covers pre-determined spheres of developmental influence in the neighborhood. The findings from the research are 1. Local government and a local non-profit development organization exert a significant influence over the social network, and 2. The quantity and quality of network connections matter in terms of relative amount of influence exerted …

Factors Influencing Success In U.S. Resident-Government Online Transactions, Matthew Garcia Jan 2013

Factors Influencing Success In U.S. Resident-Government Online Transactions, Matthew Garcia

Public Administration ETDs

This study aims to contribute an additional perspective to the body of e-Government research that may aid future studies by theorists and practitioners to improve and innovate the ways in which they use online systems to engage their constituents. U.S. governments have implemented e-Government systems for 20 years, however little credence has been given to the question of how successful stakeholders are in completing tasks using e-Government systems. Tested factors include socio-demographic and socio- economic characteristics, as well as characteristics of civic participation, citizen feelings about the role of government, Internet access methods, and information channels to highlight the myriad …

The Interplay Among Religiosity, Heath, And Ethnicity : Changing Patterns In The U.S., 1972-2010, Belinda Vicuna Jan 2013

The Interplay Among Religiosity, Heath, And Ethnicity : Changing Patterns In The U.S., 1972-2010, Belinda Vicuna

Psychology ETDs

Because ethnic minorities continue to experience health inequities in America, the powerful social forces that help determine our health become all the more relevant to explore. Within this social context, an often overlooked factor is the role that religiosity plays in influencing health. This investigation explored the relationships among religiosity, health, and ethnicity. Primary aims were to specify the change that has occurred over time in religiosity, health, and socio-demographic variables and to determine whether religiosity has a unique influence on health for each ethnic group. The General Social Survey, a large, nationally representative dataset was utilized. Comparisons of correlations …

An Investigation Of The Potential For And Application Of Life Cycle Analysis In The Pharmaceutical Industry, Michael Raymond Jan 2013

An Investigation Of The Potential For And Application Of Life Cycle Analysis In The Pharmaceutical Industry, Michael Raymond

Theses and Dissertations

Life cycle assessment offers a unique opportunity to analyze emission reductions across all manufacturing sectors. However, few efforts have been made to apply this method to the pharmaceutical industry. The Toxic Release Inventory is a powerful tool to determine areas of high potential for emissions reductions in industry. When applied to the pharmaceutical industry and coupled with a life cycle assessment, areas for significant environmental improvement become apparent. By examining these trends and exploring a variety of emissions reductions techniques, life cycle emissions in these problem areas may be significantly reduced. These trends demonstrate that manufacture of virgin solvent and …

Horses were domesticated from the Eurasian steppes 5,000-6,000 years ago. Since then, the use of horses for transportation, warfare, and agriculture, as well as selection for desired traits and fitness, has resulted in diverse populations distributed across the world, many of which have become or are in the process of becoming formally organized into closed, breeding populations (breeds). This report describes the use of a genome-wide set of autosomal SNPs and 814 horses from 36 breeds to provide the first detailed description of equine breed diversity. F(ST) calculations, parsimony, and distance analysis demonstrated relationships among the breeds that largely reflect …

Asian Primate Species Richness Correlates With Rainfall, Yi-Chen Wang, Amrita Srivathsan, Chen-Chieh Feng, Agus Salim, Myron Shekelle

Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Previous studies of meta-analyses found significantly positive correlations between primate species richness and rainfall for Africa, Madagascar and the Neotropics, with the exception of Asia, leaving the open question whether that anomaly is the result of sampling bias, biogeography, or some other factor. This study re-examines the question using modelled data, with primate species richness data from the Southeast Asian Mammals Databank and rainfall data from the Climatic Research Unit. Data processing with Geographical Information Systems resulted in 390 sample points. Reduced major axis and ordinary least squares regressions were employed to examine the relationship for six regions, including the …

A Phylogeny Of Birds Based On Over 1,500 Loci Collected By Target Enrichment And High-Throughput Sequencing, John E. Mccormack, Michael G. Harvey, Brant C. Faircloth, Nicholas G. Crawford, Travis C. Glenn, Robb T. Brumfield

Faculty Publications

Evolutionary relationships among birds in Neoaves, the clade comprising the vast majority of avian diversity, have vexed systematists due to the ancient, rapid radiation of numerous lineages. We applied a new phylogenomic approach to resolve relationships in Neoaves using target enrichment (sequence capture) and high-throughput sequencing of ultraconserved elements (UCEs) in avian genomes. We collected sequence data from UCE loci for 32 members of Neoaves and one outgroup (chicken) and analyzed data sets that differed in their amount of missing data. An alignment of 1,541 loci that allowed missing data was 87% complete and resulted in a highly resolved phylogeny …

Denial Of Territory To Terrorist Groups In Us Counterterrorism Strategy, Kenneth Anderson Jan 2013

Denial Of Territory To Terrorist Groups In Us Counterterrorism Strategy, Kenneth Anderson

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

This short (1500 words) policy briefing paper describes the strategic evolution of US counterterrorism policies to incorporate "denial of territory" strategies alongside existing strategies, particularly long-term, increasingly continuous surveillance by drones, and armed drone attacks, pursued as a counter-raiding strategy against terrorist groups. It argues that US counterterrorism requires not only a counter-raiding strategy via drone strikes, but also the ability to deny territory to terrorist groups. Denial of territory means two distinct strategies, however. One is to deny safe havens to terrorist groups; safe houses, compounds, training camps and bases -- the tiny slices of territory that are usually …

Valuing New Hampshire Salt Marshes: An Approach To Measuring Ecosystem Services, David M. Burdick

Jackson Estuarine Laboratory

David Burdick presented work a method for estimating the ecosystem services benefits of salt marsh restoration. The approach combines ecological valuation, which uses structural and functional indicators to measure the marshes response to restoration, and economic valuation, which uses ecosystem services valuations, to determine the net gain in ecosystem services of marsh restoration.

Stability And Instability In Third World Security Complexes: The Role Of Arms Transfers, David Todd Kinsella Jan 2013

Stability And Instability In Third World Security Complexes: The Role Of Arms Transfers, David Todd Kinsella

Political Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Controversy surrounds the alleged effects of foreign arms transfers on belligerency: do they precipitate international conflict, as some critics suggest, or do they promote stability by reinforcing deterrence, as others maintain? This paper examines the connection between arms transfers to the Third World and the occurrence of interstate conflict, including militarized disputes, from the end of World War II until the early 1990s. My analysis indicates that, in the aggregate, arms transfers almost uniformly contributed to subsequent instability within security complexes located in various regions of the Third World, but that the effects of American versus Russian arms supplies often …
