Urban Geographies Of Romance: Meeting And Mating In Cairo, Elaine Van Dalen Feb 2013

Urban Geographies Of Romance: Meeting And Mating In Cairo, Elaine Van Dalen

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis offers a spatial analysis of engagement and marriage among young people from Būlāq ad-Dakrūr, Cairo. It explores how these individuals negotiate their access to spaces within a neoliberal city and use them to find potential partners, meet with those partners once they have found them and to live with them when they first get married. The researcher had informal conversations with about 30 individuals between the age 18 and 30 and their family members, mostly during the spring of 2013. The outcome shows that the neighborhood has a primary function in the shaping of gendered subjectivities that try …

Rising Income And The Subjective Well-Being Of Nations, Ed Diener, Louis Tay, Shigehiro Oishi Feb 2013

Rising Income And The Subjective Well-Being Of Nations, Ed Diener, Louis Tay, Shigehiro Oishi

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

We explored whether rising income in nations is associated with increasing subjective well-being (SWB), with several advances over earlier work. Our methods are improved in that across time, the same well-being questions were asked in the same order, and we employed broad and equivalent representative samples over time from a large number of nations. We also assessed psychosocial factors that might mediate the relation of income and SWB. We found that changes in household income were associated with concomitant changes in life evaluations, positive feelings, and negative feelings. The effects of gross domestic product (GDP) change were weaker and significant …

Climate Change Meets The Law Of The Horse, J.B. Ruhl, James Salzman Feb 2013

Climate Change Meets The Law Of The Horse, J.B. Ruhl, James Salzman

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

The climate change policy debate has only recently turned its full attention to adaptation - how to address the impacts of climate change we have already begun to experience and that will likely increase over time. Legal scholars have in turn begun to explore how the many different fields of law will and should respond. During this nascent period, one overarching question has gone unexamined: how will the legal system as a whole organize around climate change adaptation? Will a new distinct field of climate change adaptation law and policy emerge, or will legal institutions simply work away at the …

Grounded Theologies: ‘Religion’ And The ‘Secular’ In Human Geography, Justin K. H. Tse Feb 2013

Grounded Theologies: ‘Religion’ And The ‘Secular’ In Human Geography, Justin K. H. Tse

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

This paper replies to Kong’s (2010) lament that geographers of religion have not sufficiently intervened in religious studies. It advocates ‘grounded theologies’ as a rubric by which to investigate contemporary geographies of religion in a secular age. Arguing that secularization can itself be conceived as a theological process, the paper critiques a religious/secular dichotomy and argues that individualized spiritualities presently prevalent are indicative of Taylor’s (2007) nova effect of proliferating grounded theologies. Case studies are drawn from social and cultural geographies of religious intersectionalities and from critical geopolitics.

The Impact Of Gut Passage By Binturongs (Arctictus Binturong) On Seed Germination, Christina P. Colon, Ahimsa Campos-Arceiz Feb 2013

The Impact Of Gut Passage By Binturongs (Arctictus Binturong) On Seed Germination, Christina P. Colon, Ahimsa Campos-Arceiz

Publications and Research

Binturongs (Arctictis binturong) are the largest of Asian civets and, due to their highly frugivorous diet, are expected to play an important role in seed dispersal processes. To study the effect of binturong gut passage on seed viability, we fed 10 captive binturongs with fruits of longan (Dimocarpus longan), papaya (Carica papaya) and chiku (Manilkara zapota), collected the seeds they defaecated, and planted these to determine seed germination rate and time. Of the defaecated seeds, 90.4% passed through binturong gut intact in under nine hours, and 99.4% passed in under 33 hours. Chiku seeds had the highest germination rate (35.7% …

Landscape Configuration And Urban Heat Island Effects: Assessing The Relationship Between Landscape Characteristics And Land Surface Temperature In Phoenix, Arizona, John Patrick Connors, Christopher S. Galletti, Winston T. L. Chow Feb 2013

Landscape Configuration And Urban Heat Island Effects: Assessing The Relationship Between Landscape Characteristics And Land Surface Temperature In Phoenix, Arizona, John Patrick Connors, Christopher S. Galletti, Winston T. L. Chow

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

The structure of urban environments is known to alter local climate, in part due to changes in land cover. A growing subset of research focuses specifically on the UHI in terms of land surface temperature by using data from remote sensing platforms. Past research has established a clear relationship between land surface temperature and the proportional area of land covers, but less research has specifically examined the effects of the spatial patterns of these covers. This research considers the rapidly growing City of Phoenix, Arizona in the United States. To better understand how landscape structure affects local climate, we explored …

The Diffusion Of Edublogs Among Educators In Egypt, Salma Hany Mohammed Omar Abdelrehim Feb 2013

The Diffusion Of Edublogs Among Educators In Egypt, Salma Hany Mohammed Omar Abdelrehim

Theses and Dissertations

This study gives some insight with regards to the diffusion of educational blogs among educators working in Egypt. Through the literature review the researcher establishes the importance of edublogs and gives examples of their use around the world, then goes on to answer questions about the reasons behind why edublogs are not being used by educators in Egypt. The research compares edublog adopters and nonusers by tackling three issues in the diffusion process. For the adopters, the study inquires about how they found out about the edublogs to see if it was traditional word of mouth as the diffusion of …

Pda, Circulation, And Over-Budget Requests: Harnessing Data To Inform Library Strategies, Antje Mays

Dacus Library Faculty Publications

This article presents the data-rich findings of an experiment with enlisting patron-driven/demand-driven acquisitions (DDA) of ebooks in two ways. The first experiment entailed comparison of DDA eBook usage against newly ordered hardcopy materials’ circulation, both overall and ebook vs. print usage within the same subject areas. Secondly, this study experimented with DDA ebooks as a backup plan for unfunded requests left over at the end of the fiscal year.

Orbitally Paced Shifts In The Particle Size Of Antarctic Continental Shelf Sediments In Response To Ice Dynamics During The Miocene Climatic Optimum, Sandra Passchier, Candice J. Falk, Fabio Florindo Feb 2013

Orbitally Paced Shifts In The Particle Size Of Antarctic Continental Shelf Sediments In Response To Ice Dynamics During The Miocene Climatic Optimum, Sandra Passchier, Candice J. Falk, Fabio Florindo

Department of Earth and Environmental Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

The AND-2A drill hole (ANDRILL [Antarctic Geological Drilling Program] Southern McMurdo Sound Project), ∼10 km from the East Antarctica coastline, records nearly 6 m.y. of sedimentation across the Miocene climatic optimum at a high-latitude site. Sedimentological studies of bedforms and particle size distributions indicate that the paleoenvironment was strongly affected by waves and currents, consistent with deposition in a glacially influenced neritic environment. We document abrupt shifts in mud percent within glacial-interglacial cycles ca. 17.8 Ma and between ca. 16.7 and 15.7 Ma that we attribute to the hydrodynamic effects of wave stirring tied to episodes of ice growth and …

A National Perspective On The Current Evaluation Activities In Extension, Alexa J. Lamm, Glenn D. Israel, David Diehl Feb 2013

A National Perspective On The Current Evaluation Activities In Extension, Alexa J. Lamm, Glenn D. Israel, David Diehl

Journal of Extension

In order to enhance Extension evaluation efforts it is important to understand current practices. The study reported here researched the evaluation behaviors of county-based Extension professionals. Extension professionals from eight states (n = 1,173) responded to a survey regarding their evaluation data collection, analysis, and reporting methods while evaluating their "best" Extension program. The majority used post-tests at the conclusion of their educational activities and reported the actual numbers of respondents. Few respondents collected data representing behavior change. To improve, Extension professionals need to gain evaluation skills and work together to develop strong evaluations that measure change over time.

Estimating Local Food Capacity In Publicly Funded Institutions, Andrew J. Knight, Hema M. Chopra Feb 2013

Estimating Local Food Capacity In Publicly Funded Institutions, Andrew J. Knight, Hema M. Chopra

Journal of Extension

This article presents three approaches to estimate the size of the publicly funded institutional marketplace to determine what opportunities exist for local farmers and fishers. First, we found that estimates from national foodservice sales statistics over-estimate local capacity opportunities. Second, analyzing budgets of publicly funded institutions for foodservice expenditures proved more difficult than anticipated. Third, a consumption production model from data provided by the institutions and comparing it to production statistics enabled us to estimate local capacity in publicly funded institutions for specific commodities. The consumption production model provided the most useful estimates for Extension and government decision makers.

Pesticide Consumption And Productivity And The Potential Of Ipm In Bangladesh, S Rahman Feb 2013

Pesticide Consumption And Productivity And The Potential Of Ipm In Bangladesh, S Rahman

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

The paper analyses trends in consumption, productivity and the determinants of pesticide use in Bangladesh over a 33 year period (1977-2009), including a discussion on the scope to expand Integrated Pest Management (IPM) practices. Pesticide use grew at an alarming rate of 10.0% per year (p<0.01) although the corresponding response in yield growth of major crops has been minimal (<1.0% per year). Pesticide productivity (i.e., 'gross value added from crops at constant prices' per 'kg of active ingredients of all pesticides used') is declining steadily at a rate of -8.6% per year (p<0.01). Adoption of Green Revolution (GR) technology, crop diversification, average farm size and literacy rate are the most significant determinants of pesticide use, whereas research and development (R&D) investment depresses pesticide use. Consistent evidence of excessive pesticide use in Bangladesh was observed. Although the government has shifted focus from pesticide use to IPM, its coverage remains inadequate as only 7.4% of the total farmers are covered after 30 years of effort. Tighter pesticide regulation and its effective implementation, and expansion of IPM through public, private and non-governmental organisation (NGO) stakeholders are suggested to reduce pesticide consumption.

Reversal Of Gender In Ancient Egyptian Mythology: Discovering The Secrets Of Androgyny, Ashley N. Dawson Ms. Jan 2013

Reversal Of Gender In Ancient Egyptian Mythology: Discovering The Secrets Of Androgyny, Ashley N. Dawson Ms.

Oglethorpe Journal of Undergraduate Research

Historically, the Egyptian view of life after death has been examined based on its spiritual and religious merit. There are other aspects of Egyptian culture, however, that lead us to believe that gender and sexual androgyny played a massive role in their religious practices. Ancient creation myths, such as the stories of Atum’s phallic creation and the separation of Nut and Geb, hint towards a more sexually ambiguous Egypt, created by gender switching gods. In addition, the astronomy of the time pointed towards the center of the universe as being both a masculine and feminine entity; this is embodied in …

Savage Fakes: Misdirection, Fraudulence, And Autobiography In The 1920s, Whitney Purvis Rakich Jan 2013

Savage Fakes: Misdirection, Fraudulence, And Autobiography In The 1920s, Whitney Purvis Rakich

American Studies ETDs

In the 1920s, Americans grew increasingly interested in the figure of the primitive man, who was championed as the antidote to civilization's weakening effects on the modern human spirit. Concurrently in the field of American Studies, Vernon Lewis Parrington theorized about the effects of the "broad currents" of American life. the return to a primitive, natural self was just such a “broad current” of the day. With primitive conduct as the potential salve for civilized humanity, a handful of American authors of the 1920s used fake autobiographies to articulate the savage internal self. In the four texts that comprise this …

Holocene Pedogenesis In Fluvial Deposits Of The Conejos River Valley, Southern Colorado, Anthony L. Layzell, Martha C. Eppes Jan 2013

Holocene Pedogenesis In Fluvial Deposits Of The Conejos River Valley, Southern Colorado, Anthony L. Layzell, Martha C. Eppes

The Compass: Earth Science Journal of Sigma Gamma Epsilon

Relatively few geomorphic studies have examined Holocene-aged soils developed in alluvial deposits in the Rocky Mountains. Here, we present a soil morphological investigation from a suite of fluvial terraces in the glaciated portion of the Conejos River Valley, southern Colorado. The surficial geology of 25 km of the glacial valley was mapped in detail. Within three separate sub-reaches (Platoro, Lake Fork and South Fork) a total of thirteen soil pits and exposures were excavated and described on alluvial deposits. Soil samples were analyzed for particle size and extractable iron.

Soil horizonation (A/C to A/B/2C), structure (fine sub angular to medium …

Mlipir: The Genesis Within Relations Of Production Between Industrial Sector And Rural Society, Rahardika Arista Utama

Masyarakat: Jurnal Sosiologi

This paper examines how the interactions between industrial development actors in rural setting reflect the internal dynamics of Third World countries that maintain dependence on developed countries. The diverse discussion on the impact of industrialization which mostly emphasized on particular issues is difficult to depict the comprehensive situation on the impacted society. Further analysis which recognized the existence of the mutual relations among state, market, and society is necessary to best describe the invisible but essential impact of industrialization. Thus, this paper argues that inequality is the essential impact of industrialization which has been emerged in various form of social …

Potret Intelektual Muslim: Sebuah Tinjauan Sosiologi Pengetahuan Terhadap Pemikiran Ahmad Syafii Maarif, Arie Putra

Masyarakat: Jurnal Sosiologi

There are numerous Islamic actors whom undertook significant role in establishing Indonesian society understanding toward Islam. One of them is Ahmad Syafii Maarif, one of the Islamic figures who evokes Indonesian muslim optimism toward democracy. Through sociology of knowledge framework, this research will take a look on the formation process of Ahmad Syafii Maarif’s Islamic thought. Sociology of knowledge is considered to be the appropriate framework due to the interconnectivity it provided between historical, philosophical, and sociological framework in investigating knowledge formation. However, though being utilized in this research for its extensiveness, the framework tends to stress the connection between …

Teori Kekuasaan Michel Foucault: Tantangan Bagi Sosiologi Politik, Abdil Mughis Mudhoffir

Masyarakat: Jurnal Sosiologi

Power is often discussed in political discourse or in political sociology. In this context, power is understood as the attribution, capacity, or capital to achieve certain goals of the owners. Foucault does not reject this argument, but this perspective would not be able to expose the invisible subjugation. The more critical view of power appears in cultural studies. Gramsci’s concept of hegemony is often used to dismantle the cultural establishment in the process of domination that was veiled. The more sophisticated findings, power has surpassed even the hegemonic ways, which is factually or coined by Foucault as governmentality. This paper …

Mencari Makna Pembangunan Sosial: Studi Kasus Sektor Informal Di Kota Solo, Paulus Wirutomo

Masyarakat: Jurnal Sosiologi

The present development concept has been widely criticized for being too sectoral and growth oriented. A new concept like Human Development introduced by the United Nation is a good alternative, but it is still sectoral in nature. This article tries to offer a more sociological concept of development, since it is based on the contention that to develop human being we have to develop its society. It means to develop “the basic elements of socio-cultural life” namely: the structural, cultural and processual elements. By analyzing the data on the informal sector in Solo collected with SSM methodology, I have come …
