Vocabulary Acquisition And Technology, German I/Ii, Grade 10-12, Beate U. Brunow, Travis Trojan, Arthur Turfa

Arthur Vining Davis High Impact Fellows Projects

Information technology plays an important role at Blythewood High School and the recent purchase of chrome books for students will be part of our project. All students will have access to chrome books, and Dr. Turfa also uses the social learning network “Edmodo” to communicate with his students. The project focuses on developing lessons for beginning German classes that combine knowledge and understanding of German-speaking cultures with communication. This approach reflects the current ACTFL standards for foreign language learning (preparing for the 21st century) with the guiding learning principle: “Knowing how, when, and why to say what to whom.” …

Arthur Vining Davis High Impact Fellows Projects

This project focuses on developing learning modules that combine grammar and culture for beginning and intermediate level high school Spanish classes. The objective of this project is to make grammar more interactive for students, while at the same time highlighting the cultural richness and diversity of the Spanish-speaking world. This approach reflects the current ACTFL standards for foreign language learning (preparing for the 21st century) and the South Carolina Academic Standards for Modern Languages. Ms. Haney wanted to make learning grammar more enjoyable and accessible to her students. She was also interested in exploring ways of using technology more …

Uinta Basin: Elevated Ozone Creates Opportunities, Not Adversaries, John Robinson Jr. Apr 2013

Uinta Basin: Elevated Ozone Creates Opportunities, Not Adversaries, John Robinson Jr.

Environmental Dispute Resolution Program

This paper examines rural ozone pollution in the Uinta Basin. The pollution issue is complex—scientific uncertainty compounds with jurisdictional issues under the Clean Air Act. A large number of conservation, government, and economic stakeholders take interest in the region’s air quality and there are no easy answers. This paper seeks to stimulate discussion in hopes of fostering a collaborative approach to solving the problem. It includes both a conflict assessment and proposes a process design for moving forward through cooperation.

Conflict Assessment And Environmental Dispute Resolution Process Design Addressing Deposition Of Naturally Occurring Asbestos At Swift Creek, Whatcom County, Washington, Douglas Naftz

Environmental Dispute Resolution Program

Swift Creek presents an unprecedented mixture of complex scientific, geologic, environmental, economic, and sociological issues. Combined, these issues slip into a “seam between the authorities,” making them very difficult to address under the existing regime of environmental law in the United States. As recognized by Melious, as well as the former EPA Region 10 Regional Administrator, Elin Miller the presence of a “seam between authorities” that is not contemplated by existing legal solutions might actually foster the application of a creative collaborative process designed to develop and implement a permanent comprehensive sediment management solution at Swift Creek. In fact, it …

The Dark Side Of Town: The Social Capital Revolution In Residential Property, Stephanie M. Stern Apr 2013

The Dark Side Of Town: The Social Capital Revolution In Residential Property, Stephanie M. Stern

All Faculty Scholarship

Social capital has pervaded property law, with scholars and policymakers advocating laws and property arrangements to promote social capital and relying on social capital to devolve property governance from legal institutions to resident groups. This Article challenges the prevailing view of social capital’s salutary effects with a more skeptical account that examines the dark side of residential social capital — its capacity to effectuate local factions and promote restraints and inegalitarianism that close off property. I introduce a set of claims about social capital’s dark side in residential property and explore these points through the examples of local racial purging, …

Do Age-Friendly Characteristics Influence The Expectation To Age In Place? A Comparison Of Low-Income And Higher Income Detroit Elders, Amanda J. Lehning, Richard J. Smith, Ruth E. Dunkle Apr 2013

Do Age-Friendly Characteristics Influence The Expectation To Age In Place? A Comparison Of Low-Income And Higher Income Detroit Elders, Amanda J. Lehning, Richard J. Smith, Ruth E. Dunkle

Social Work Faculty Publications

Currently there is limited evidence linking age-friendly characteristics to outcomes in elders. Using a representative sample of 1,376 adults aged 60 and older living in Detroit, this study examined the association between age-friendly social and physical environmental characteristics and the expectation to age in place, and the potential differences between low- and higher-income elders. Based on U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) age-friendly guide, we identified six factors reflecting age-friendly characteristics. Logistic regression models indicated that regardless of income level only neighborhood problems were significantly associated with expecting to age in place. Low-income elders were more likely to expect to age …

The Influence Of Enterprise Systems On Business And Information Technology, D. Lance Revenaugh, Ph.D., Myles M. Muretta

Business & Information Technology

Business strategy is important to all organizations. Nearly all Fortune 500 firms are implementing Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems to improve the execution of their business strategy and to improve integration with its information technology (IT) strategy. Successful implementation of these multi-million dollar software systems are requiring new emphasis on change management and on Business and IT strategic alignment. This paper examines business and IT strategic alignment and seeks to explore whether an ERP implementation can drive business process reengineering and business and IT strategic alignment. An overview of business strategy and strategic alignment are followed by an analysis of …

Effects Of Human Land Use On Prey Availability And Body Condition In The Green Anole Lizard, Anolis Carolinensis, Andrew C. Battles, Tara K. Whittle, Chelsea M. Stehle, Michele A. Johnson Apr 2013

Effects Of Human Land Use On Prey Availability And Body Condition In The Green Anole Lizard, Anolis Carolinensis, Andrew C. Battles, Tara K. Whittle, Chelsea M. Stehle, Michele A. Johnson

Biology Faculty Research

Lizards frequently occur in disturbed habitats, yet the impacts of human activity on lizard biology remain understudied. Here, we examined the effects of land use on the body condition of Green Anole lizards (Anolis carolinensis) and the availability of their arthropod prey. Because human activity generally alters abiotic and biotic habitat features, we predicted that areas modified by humans would differ from areas with natural, intact vegetation in arthropod abundance and biomass. In addition, because biological communities in high use areas are often relatively homogenized, we predicted that higher human land use would result in lower prey diversity. Regardless of …

The Black Diamonds Of Bahia (Carbonados) And The Building Of Euro-America: A Half-Century Supply Monopoly (1880s-1930s), Marc W. Herold Apr 2013

The Black Diamonds Of Bahia (Carbonados) And The Building Of Euro-America: A Half-Century Supply Monopoly (1880s-1930s), Marc W. Herold

Economics

This paper traces the birth, maturity and decline of what was Bahia’s natural supply monopoly of black or industrial diamonds: first used in polishing materials (for consumption); then in drilling; and by 1940 they were employed in making parts for the Third Reich’s premier fighter plane, the Messerschmitt bF 109. The evolution in the way these stones were produced, the agents involved in production and distribution, and how the income was distributed along the commodity chain are examined. The importance of technological change is documented with the huge boost in demand for industrial diamonds when the Leschot diamond-head drill was …

Blowin' In The Wind: Short-Term Weather And Belief In Anthropogenic Climate Change., Lawrence C. Hamilton, Mary D. Stampone Apr 2013

Blowin' In The Wind: Short-Term Weather And Belief In Anthropogenic Climate Change., Lawrence C. Hamilton, Mary D. Stampone

Sociology

Abstract

A series of polls provides new tests for how weather influences public beliefs about climate change. Statewide data from 5000 random-sample telephone interviews conducted on 99 days over 2.5 yr (2010-12) are merged with temperature and precipitation indicators derived from U.S. Historical Climatology Network (USHCN) station records. The surveys carry a question designed around scientific consensus statements that climate change is happening now, caused mainly by human activities. Alternatively, respondents can state that climate change is not happening, or that it is happening but mainly for natural reasons. Belief that humans are changing the climate is predicted by temperature …

Obstacles In Human Service Work With Teen Mothers, Chloe Casale Apr 2013

Obstacles In Human Service Work With Teen Mothers, Chloe Casale

Social Work Theses

Research has shown that it is extremely beneficial for teen mothers to have support during their pregnancy and during their new experience of motherhood. Teen mothers can be extremely vulnerable because of the many obstacles they may face including unhealthy relationships, lack of education attainment, mental health concerns, and isolation. One source of support can come from human service workers. In an effort to better understand the obstacles faced by teen mothers, and thus the obstacles faced by home visitors, this study focused on the stories, opinions, and experiences of those who are working with teen mothers in a home …

Taking The Road Most Travelled: Understanding Patterns Of Snake (Colubridae; Storeria) Movement And Road Mortality In A State Park, Iwo P. Gross Apr 2013

Taking The Road Most Travelled: Understanding Patterns Of Snake (Colubridae; Storeria) Movement And Road Mortality In A State Park, Iwo P. Gross

Student Honors Theses

Roadways negatively affect their surrounding ecosystems through the contamination of air, water, and soil resources, the dissection of populations and habitat areas, and the direct mortality of several fauna. My study assessed the significance of a number of variables that might influence the temporal and spatial patterns of road mortality in a population of Midland Brownsnakes (Storeria dekayi wrightorum). I utilized passive sampling techniques and roadwalking surveys to collect individual snakes from a road during their biannual migrations from lowland activity areas to upland forests where they hibernate. I discovered that sexually biased behavioral and natural history traits impacted an …

Identity, Engagement, And The Space Of The River In Cumandá, Lee Joan Skinner Apr 2013

Identity, Engagement, And The Space Of The River In Cumandá, Lee Joan Skinner

CMC Faculty Publications and Research

In Juan León Mera’s Cumandá, o un drama entre salvajes (Ecuador, 1879), the River Pastaza and the journeys the novel’s characters take on it form the centerpiece of the narrative. The novel presents rivers as problematic, problematized spaces of shifting meanings. The river is a space of mediation between humans and the natural world, a landscape that both supports humans and is inimical to them. Thus the eponymous, indigenous heroine of Mera’s novel at first navigates the Pastaza with exceptional grace, and yet, once she rejects her clan and tribe, she is unable to traverse the river as easily as …
