The Regional Exchange: From Main Street To Shopping Mall To App Info-Structure, Christoper R. Depalma Apr 2013

The Regional Exchange: From Main Street To Shopping Mall To App Info-Structure, Christoper R. Depalma

Architecture Senior Theses

The current switch that has now made the shopping center model vulnerable to yet another evolution is the smartphone, which, since its introduction has become an essential component to American lifestyle even more quickly than the car, changing the way in which people engage in both social and commercial activity. Unlike their response to the automobile switch, if architects can recognize and accept the smartphone as a evolutionary tool, then they can take a center role in designing the next major regional exchange. This new social and commercial regional spatial organizer is still desired to be a physical place, however …

Returns To Schooling: A Quantile Regression, Arman Oganisian Apr 2013

Returns To Schooling: A Quantile Regression, Arman Oganisian

Annual Celebration of Student Scholarship and Creativity

This paper contributes to the large body of economic literature that attempts to estimate the returns to schooling. It uses quantile regression to estimate the effect of an additional year of education on monthly wage for earners in different quantiles. Using data from the young men’s cohort of the National Longitudinal Survey, the paper attempts to control for ability, family background, geography, and race, and finds that the returns to schooling is approximately 3.49% for men. Furthermore, the paper finds that while the effect of education on earnings is not significantly different from quantile to quantile, the significance of education …

Community Health Faculty Publications and Presentations

Transport is associated with environmental problems, economic losses, health and social inequalities. A number of European and US cities have implemented initiatives to promote multimodal modes of transport. In Latin America changes are occurring in public transport systems and a number of projects aimed at stimulating non-motorized modes of transport (walking and cycling) have already been implemented. Based on articles from peer-reviewed academic journals, this paper examines experiences in Bogota (Colombia), Curitiba (Brazil), and Santiago (Chile), and identifies how changes to the transport system contribute to encourage active transportation. Bus rapid transit, ciclovias, bike paths/lanes, and car use restriction are …

Tanzanian Agricultural Markets And The Resulting Effects On Farmers Market Mechanisms At A Local Level In The Western Usambara’S Lushoto District, Carson A. Casey

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

As a developing nation Tanzania is highly dependent on its agricultural sector, serving as a source of income generation for more than 80 percent of the population. Moreover, agriculture in Tanzania currently accounts for more than half of the country’s total Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Currently smallholder farmers dominate the Tanzanian agricultural market. In the Western Usambara’s Lushoto District there is a high concentration of smallholder farmers who are involved in both the cash crop and subsistence agricultural markets of Tanzania. The sample population was Lushoto District farmers identifying as head of household individuals from either the village of Mazumbai, …

Climate Data Manipulation And The Use Of Water To Build Political Power In The Southwest United States, Conrad Moore, Professor Emeritus

Earth, Environmental, and Atmospheric Sciences Faculty Publications

Models utilized by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change indicate a striking trend toward increasing aridity in the Southwest United States. Two landmark articles published in Science magazine have emphasized the critical future consequences of this trend. Data from 59 National Weather Service stations distributed across the region west of the continental divide and south of the 41stparallel (the northern border of Colorado and northeastern Utah), including 36 stations in the Upper Colorado River Basin and lower Southwest, show that annual and winter precipitation increased over the 60-year period 1950-2010, although the record is impoverished by the deletion …

Supply Chain "Mega-Trends": Current Status And Future Trends, Edward Sweeney Apr 2013

Supply Chain "Mega-Trends": Current Status And Future Trends, Edward Sweeney

Practitioner Journals

The supply chain management (SCM) concept has become embedded in the thinking of many organisations in recent years. Originally introduced by management consultants in the early 1980s, SCM has a strong focus on integration of processes across functions within firms, as well as between the organisations that comprise the wider extended enterprise. There is a significant body of research to support the notion that the consistent delivery of value to customers is predicated on higher levels of intra-firm and inter-firm integration. Putting the supply chain integration (SCI) concept into practice is critically dependent on the ability of firms to manage …

A Philological, Epidemiological, And Clinical Analysis Of The Plague Of Athens, Corrin Powell Apr 2013

A Philological, Epidemiological, And Clinical Analysis Of The Plague Of Athens, Corrin Powell

Senior Honors Projects

In the summer of 430 B.C. during the Peloponnesian War, a plague hit Athens a few days after the Spartans besieged the city. The plague raged continuously for two years and broke out again in 427 B.C. Most of the population was infected, and approximately 25% of the population died. Thucydides wrote History of the Peloponnesian War, which is the main literary source for the plague and other events in the Peloponnesian War. Although Thucydides took great pains to carefully describe the clinical features of the disease, physicians and classicists disagree on the identification of the disease. In the past …

Value Proposition Of Banking Brands In India, Y L R Moorthi Apr 2013

Value Proposition Of Banking Brands In India, Y L R Moorthi

Working Papers

One of the simpler and more practical brand related constructs is a brand's value proposition. A brand's value proposition can be defined as the sum of functional, emotional and self-expressive benefits offered by a brand (Aaker, 1996) [1]. This paper postulates that the value proposition of the banking brands in the West is different from that in India. It hypothesizes that while foreign banks in India are chosen overridingly for self-expressive benefits, private Indian banks are chosen for functional benefits and public sector Indian banks for emotional benefits.

Estimation Of Firm-Level Productivity Changes In The Indian Power Sector: Disentangling Unobserved Heterogeneity By A Transformed Fixed-Effect Stochastic Frontier Model, Anish Sugathan, Deepak Malghan, S Chandrashekar, Deepak Kumar Sinha Apr 2013

Estimation Of Firm-Level Productivity Changes In The Indian Power Sector: Disentangling Unobserved Heterogeneity By A Transformed Fixed-Effect Stochastic Frontier Model, Anish Sugathan, Deepak Malghan, S Chandrashekar, Deepak Kumar Sinha

Working Papers

We measure firm-level productivity changes in the Indian electricity sector during a period that witnessed several pro-market regulatory changes. Using information collected from multiple sources we construct a unique panel of generating firms and transmission and distribution utilities spanning the years 2000 to 2009. We employ a recently developed improvement in the Stochastic Frontier panel method that allows controlling for time-invariant unobserved heterogeneity. Using the method we jointly estimate inefficiency and exogenous determinants of inefficiency. We estimate a flexible translog production model and compute decomposition of productivity into components of changes in technology, efficiency, scale and price effect. During this …

The Challenge Of Relocating Urban Slums The Impact Of Program Governance On Its Acceptance, Dinesh Kumar Masta, Gopal Naik, Kanchan Mukherjee Apr 2013

The Challenge Of Relocating Urban Slums The Impact Of Program Governance On Its Acceptance, Dinesh Kumar Masta, Gopal Naik, Kanchan Mukherjee

Working Papers

The prevalence of slums in large cities has been a cause of concern for policy makers. People living in slums face deprivation on several fronts and slum themselves can be seen as dwelling arrangements, which are inadequate and unfit for habitation. Several attempts have been made through a series of programs like VAMBAY and BSUP (in India) to rehabilitate slum-dwellers by moving them into houses that conform to the minimum acceptable living standards (as defined by their respective societies). However, there have been many reported incidences when slum-dwellers refused to move into the houses built for them. The problem is more …

The Broadband Digital Divide And The Benefits Of Mobile Broadband For Minorities, James Prieger Apr 2013

The Broadband Digital Divide And The Benefits Of Mobile Broadband For Minorities, James Prieger

School of Public Policy Working Papers

This study sets out the facts regarding broadband deployment and usage in the US and the particular promise of mobile broadband for minorities. Fixed broadband is nearly ubiquitous and most people have access to four or more mobile broadband providers. Growth in fixed broadband usage is leveling off, while mobile broadband usage growth remains robust. Blacks and Hispanics generally have fewer fixed broadband options but more mobile broadband providers available. Gaps in broadband usage overall (fixed and mobile combined) for minorities persist and are quite large. Matching estimators show that lagging broadband adoption among minority groups is not fully accounted …

An Economic Impact Comparative Analysis Of Farmers’ Markets In Michigan And Ontario, Richard C. Sadler, Michael A. R. Clark, Jason A. Gilliland Apr 2013

An Economic Impact Comparative Analysis Of Farmers’ Markets In Michigan And Ontario, Richard C. Sadler, Michael A. R. Clark, Jason A. Gilliland

Human Environments Analysis Lab (HEAL)

Farmers' markets play a vital role in local economic development by providing a site for local and small business incubation, creating an economic multiplier effect to neighboring businesses, and recycling customer dollars within the community. While several studies have evaluated characteristics of farmers' markets within single metropolitan areas, few have compared the impact of multiple markets in socioeconomically contrasting regions.

This research compares shopping habits and economic impacts of customers at farmers' markets in two North American cities: Flint, Michigan, and London, Ontario. Overall, 895 market visitors completed surveys. We conducted statistical and spatial analyses to identify differences between these …

Cultural Negotiations, David L. Browman Apr 2013

Cultural Negotiations, David L. Browman

University of Nebraska Press: Sample Books and Chapters

This meticulously researched reference work documents the role of women who contributed to the development of Americanist archaeology from 1865 to 1940. Between the Civil War and World War II, many women went into anthropology and archaeology, fields that, at the beginning of this period, welcomed and made room for amateurs of both genders. But over time, the increasingly professional structure of these fields diminished or even obscured the contributions of women due to their lack of access to prestigious academic employment and publishing opportunities. As a result, a woman archaeologist during this period often published her research under her …
