Are Dewlap Color And Display Behavior Honest Indicators Of Male Quality In Anolis Lizards?, Ellee G. Cook
Are Dewlap Color And Display Behavior Honest Indicators Of Male Quality In Anolis Lizards?, Ellee G. Cook
Biology Honors Theses
Colorful ornaments such as the pattern of a butterfly wing or the plumage of a peacock’s tail are among the most stunning products of evolution. Color, and the behaviors during which color is advertised, have come to serve important signaling functions for many species. Because color is often influenced by ecological factors such as diet or parasite load, the quality of an individual’s ornamental color can serve as an honest indicator of aspects of advertiser condition. For this thesis, I have investigated the potential for ornamental coloration and display behavior to serve as honest indicators of male quality as determined …
A Phenomenological Study Of Mid-Career Female Student Affairs Administrators' Experiences Navigating The Career Labyrinth Including Obstacles In Catholic Higher Education, Michele Starzyk
Department of Educational Administration: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
While the role of women in the Catholic Church has been a topic of much discussion, there has also been a call for the Church to partner with the laity. However, women who choose to work in Catholic co-educational, male sponsored higher education institutions may find a gendered organizational culture to embrace. Little research has been done in regards to the experience women have navigating the career labyrinth at mid-career while employed at Catholic institutions.
This study attempted to answer the grand tour question of what meaning do mid-career female student affairs professionals make of navigating the career labyrinth, including …
Exploring The Nature Of Space For Human Behavior In Ordinary Structured Environments, Molly Boeka Cannon
Exploring The Nature Of Space For Human Behavior In Ordinary Structured Environments, Molly Boeka Cannon
Department of Geography: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
What is the nature of the built environment? Built environments are the settings within which people carry out activities and emerge from the specific combining of spatial conditions with specific social content for the setting. The social content and the spatial conditions form a core-defining relationship that serves to distinguish one structured setting from another. A core-defining relationship such as this refers to the essence of the built environment. What are the implications for human behavior that emerge from conceptualizing built environments in this manner? I argue that space, through its essential relationship with the contexts of daily living (i.e. …
Intractable Syria? Insights From The Scholarly Literature On The Failure Of Mediation, J. Michael Greig
Intractable Syria? Insights From The Scholarly Literature On The Failure Of Mediation, J. Michael Greig
Penn State Journal of Law & International Affairs (2012 - Present)
The conflict in Syria has been ongoing since March 2011, but to date has resisted third-party diplomatic efforts. This failure of mediation is despite the fact that numerous actors in the international system have interests both in Syria and the Middle East at large. The human toll of the conflict, which has produced large numbers of civilian casualties and considerable human suffering, creates even deeper urgency for effective conflict management in Syria. In this paper, I apply insights drawn from the scholarly literature on conflict management and civil wars to the Syrian conflict to explain why mediation efforts have thus …

Trading Places: Mary Shelley’S Argument With Domestic Space, Eve M. Lynch
Trading Places: Mary Shelley’S Argument With Domestic Space, Eve M. Lynch
ABO: Interactive Journal for Women in the Arts, 1640–1830
When Mary Shelley began writing The Last Man in 1824 in the wake of her husband Percy Bysshe Shelley’s untimely death, she drew from her close circle of family and friends as models for her main characters. Although it is tempting to view this novel as an autobiographical expiation of the profound sorrow that overwhelmed Shelley at her husband’s death, to do so is to underestimate her prescient political insight and to risk overlooking the complex implications of class and rank that suffuse the position of the narrator, Lionel Verney. While Shelley’s emotions give a passionate appeal to this novel, …

Effects Of Hru Size On Prms Performance In 30 Western U.S. Basins, Madeline Olena Steele
Effects Of Hru Size On Prms Performance In 30 Western U.S. Basins, Madeline Olena Steele
Dissertations and Theses
Semi-distributed hydrological models are often used for streamflow forecasting, hydrological climate change impact assessments, and other applications. In such models, basins are broken up into hydrologic response units (HRUs), which are assumed to have a relatively homogenous response to precipitation. HRUs are delineated in a variety of ways, and the procedure used may impact model performance. HRU delineation procedures have been researched, but it is still not clear how important these subdivision schemes are or which delineation methods are most effective. To start addressing this knowledge gap, this project investigated whether or not HRU size has a significant effect on …

La Photographie De Rue: The Changed Face Of Doisneau’S Paris, Sarah Carrigan, Dr. James Swensen
Journal of Undergraduate Research
I suppose it all started in a textbook. Perhaps this shouldn’t be surprising, but as one who generally avoids superfluous bouts of academic reading, I’m still in a fair amount of awe that this project ever got dreamt up in the first place. Yet how could I resist the delightfully amiable photograph of an old man whose eyes were filled with light and mischief flirting with me from the introduction of my Art History 379 book? A man whom the author took so much care to mention with a tone of distinct fondness despite the fact that there was no …
Gender And The Hindsight Bias: An Economic Experiment, Jacqueline Andros, Dr. Joseph Price
Gender And The Hindsight Bias: An Economic Experiment, Jacqueline Andros, Dr. Joseph Price
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Hindsight bias, or the psychological tendency to think that we “knew it all along,” has been studied for over fifty years but no study has yet thoroughly documented the specific role that gender plays in an individual’s susceptibility to this effect. This is somewhat surprising, since the existing literature on gender differences in other potentially related respects, such as competitiveness and overconfidence, is extensive. I conducted a questionnaire-based behavioral experiment to test two hypotheses: first, that male subjects are more prone to hindsight bias than female subjects; and second, that male subjects are better at correcting for their personal level …

Characterization Of Resistance To The Cry1f Toxin From Bacillus Thuringiensis In Resistant Fall Armyworm, Spodoptera Frugiperda (J. E. Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) From Puerto Rico, Ana Maria Velez
Department of Entomology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Transgenic corn expressing Cry1F protein from Bacillus thuringiensis Berliner has been registered for Spodoptera frugiperda control since 2003. Unexpected damage to Cry1F corn was reported in 2006 in Puerto Rico and Cry1F resistance in S. frugiperda was documented. The inheritance of Cry1F resistance was characterized in a S. frugiperda resistant strain from Puerto Rico which displayed >387-fold resistance to Cry1F. Concentration-response bioassays of reciprocal crosses of resistant and susceptible parental populations indicated that resistance is recessive and autosomal. Bioassays of the backcross of the F1 generation crossed with the resistant parental strain suggest that a single locus is responsible …

ICP-OES was used to determine the concentration of several trace metals (Cu, Zn, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, and As), Watersafe® Drinking Water Test kits were used to determine the concentration of common contaminants and conditions (E. coli, pesticides atrazine and …
The Relationship Between Urban Leaf Area And Summertime Household Energy Usage In Provo, Jacob Adams, Dr. Ryan Jensen
The Relationship Between Urban Leaf Area And Summertime Household Energy Usage In Provo, Jacob Adams, Dr. Ryan Jensen
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The purpose of our study is to investigate the relationship between urban leaf area, estimated through remote sensing, and household energy usage in the city of Provo, Utah. Anecdotal evidence indicates that trees provide cooling in the summer by shading homes, which reduces the need for air conditioning and the amount of electricity used. This study will attempt to determine this decrease of energy usage based on varying amounts of tree cover as measured by the Leaf Area Index (LAI) obtained from a satellite image. We expect that LAI and household energy consumption will be negatively correlated— as LAI increases, …

Uncomfortable Convenience: The Future Of The Dollar In The International Monetary System, Clinton Thompson
Uncomfortable Convenience: The Future Of The Dollar In The International Monetary System, Clinton Thompson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
This research paper focuses on the future of the United States dollar as the world’s main reserve currency. Since the end of World War II, the international monetary system has undoubtedly been a dollar-based system, this despite the closing of the gold window in 1971 and rising U.S. debt since then. This paper aims to answer the questions of how reserve currency status gives a state power, why the dollar has remained the anchor of the world’s monetary system, the threat to the dollar’s status posed by rising U.S. debt, and possible alternatives to the dollar. A case study of …

Language Encodes Social Network Information, Sterling Chelsea Hutchinson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Knowledge regarding social information is commonly thought to be derived from sources such as interviews and formal relationships. Consequently, social networks can be generated from this information. Recent work has demonstrated that language statistics can explain findings often thought to primarily be explained by external factors. Three studies explored whether language implicitly comprises information that allows for extracting social networks, by testing the hypothesis that individuals who are socially related together are linguistically discussed together, as well as the hypothesis that individuals who are socially related more are linguistically discussed more. Three computational studies were conducted testing the extent to …

Home Rule And Environmentalism: The Adoption Of Green Initiatives In U.S. Municipalities, Luke Eastin
Home Rule And Environmentalism: The Adoption Of Green Initiatives In U.S. Municipalities, Luke Eastin
2013 Awards for Excellence in Student Research & Creative Activity - Documents
In recent years there has been a movement in academia from studying environmental policy on the national level to a much narrower examination of local municipalities and their respective green initiatives. The implications of this research reach well beyond the borders of academics and hit squarely municipalities and their corresponding local policy makers. We, as political scientists, must ask what particular characteristics of municipalities play the most significant role in green initiative adoption. Recent urban scholarship has suggested several variables that influence the adoption of environmental policies, but one specific variable, municipality home rule status, has had little to no …

Throughout this thesis, I use a multidisciplinary approach for understanding the sustainability of the culture, livelihoods, and ecosystems in the Cook Inlet and Kenai River salmon fisheries on Alaska's Kenai Peninsula. In Chapter 1, I present a broad overview of the Cook Inlet region, its inhabitants, and the various stakeholder and user groups that access regional salmon fisheries. Chapter 1 also provides an overview of the methodology utilized in this research, as well as discuss the methods, the strengths, and weaknesses of the research as part of an evaluation of the study. In Chapter 2, I present an overview of …

ISER Reports
We analyzed the use of energy by Alaska’s transportation sectors to assess the impact of sudden fuel prices changes. We conducted three types of analysis: 1) Development of broad energy use statistics for each transportation sector, including total annual energy and fuel use, carbon emissions, fuel use per ton-mile and passenger-mile, and cost of fuel per ton-mile and passenger-mile. 2) Economic input-output analysis of air, rail, truck, and water transportation sectors. 3) Adjustment of input-output modeling to reflect sudden fuel price changes to estimate the potential impact on industry output and employment. Alaska air transportation used approximately 1.9 billion gallons …

Glottopoeia: A Case Study In Language Change, Ian Hollenbaugh
Honors Theses
"Glottopoeia: A Case Study in Language Change" is a thesis in the form of a I32-page grammar booklet, entitled An Elementary Ghau Aethauic Grammar, with a preface detailing what I did, why I did it, and how I accomplished it. In effect, I invented a language called Ghau Aethau. It was created almost entirely ex nihilo, borrowing nothing in the way of phonetics, morphology, or vocabulary from any real language. It does employ grammatical concepts present in many real-world languages, but also several of my own design. I chose this project for two reasons: first, to explore the art form …
