An Examination Of The Occurrence Of Divorce And Social And Demographic Factors Within Chicago, Louise Hahn Apr 2013

An Examination Of The Occurrence Of Divorce And Social And Demographic Factors Within Chicago, Louise Hahn

Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)

This research looks at the occurrence of divorce among Cook County-Chicago census tracts from data gathered from the 2006-2010 American Community Survey (ACS) of the U.S. Census Bureau. Previous research has looked at various factors believed to affect the divorce rate of a country, in particular the economic development, average educational attainment, and participation of women in the labor force. These past studies have often found a significant and positive correlation between divorce and a country's economic development, educational attainment, and participation of women in the labor force. However, these studies have mostly focused on cross-national boundaries, thus allowing for …

Changes In Indiana Water Usage Rates Related To Population From 1990-2005, Using Gis Analysis, Alexandra Olson Apr 2013

Changes In Indiana Water Usage Rates Related To Population From 1990-2005, Using Gis Analysis, Alexandra Olson

Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)

Water is arguably our most important resource and the issue of its sustainability arises with our ever expanding population. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has five accessible data sets on their website regarding the water usage rates of each county in Indiana from 1985 to 2005. It does not provide any comparison among these years or display any maps regarding this data. Because this analysis is missing, I will focus on the correlation between water usage rates and population averages in each county of Indiana during the same years. I will then create a series of maps that display this …

Watts Up With That: Comparing Wind Farms In Texas And California While Explaining Why Farm Quantity Does Not Overcome Wind Quality, Alexandra Thompson Apr 2013

Watts Up With That: Comparing Wind Farms In Texas And California While Explaining Why Farm Quantity Does Not Overcome Wind Quality, Alexandra Thompson

Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)

Since the 1980s, California has been the leader in wind energy for the United States. In 2004, wind energy produced 1.5 percent of the state’s electricity. That is 4,258 x 108 kilowatt hours per year. The California wind farms producing the most energy are located in three regions: Altamont Pass, Tehachapi, and San Gorgonio. Research for California will be focused on the southern part of the state – the regions of Tehachapi and San Gorgonio. Presently, California has five major wind farms. This project will examine the major wind farms in both Texas and California. California was in the number …

Visual Communication On Cajamarca Ceramics From Pre-Hispanic Peru, 1000 - 1460 Ce, Jeanette Nicewinter Apr 2013

Visual Communication On Cajamarca Ceramics From Pre-Hispanic Peru, 1000 - 1460 Ce, Jeanette Nicewinter

Theses and Dissertations

This project analyzes a database of 118 ceramic sherds that were excavated from the Late Intermediate Period site of Yanaorco, located in the Cajamarca region of the north highlands in present-day Peru, for vessel form, style, and imagery. Through the placement of these sherds within the context of inter-community feasting events that took place at Yanaorco, fineware ceramic vessels are interpreted as prestige items that were utilized by the elite to further differentiate themselves from other community citizens. By examining key examples of representational and non-representational imagery depicted on the sherds, an understanding of the social agency of the vessel …

A Perspective On Multiple Waves Of Influenza Pandemics, Anna Mummert, Howard Weiss, Li-Pong Long, Jose´ M. Amigo´, Xiu-Feng Wan

Mathematics Faculty Research

Background: A striking characteristic of the past four influenza pandemic outbreaks in the United States has been the multiple waves of infections. However, the mechanisms responsible for the multiple waves of influenza or other acute infectious diseases are uncertain. Understanding these mechanisms could provide knowledge for health authorities to develop and implement prevention and control strategies. Materials and Methods: We exhibit five distinct mechanisms, each of which can generate two waves of infections for an acute infectious disease. The first two mechanisms capture changes in virus transmissibility and behavioral changes. The third mechanism involves population heterogeneity (e.g., demography, geography), where …

Attire And Appearance Of Orthodontists: A Survey Of Parent Preferences, Gillian Kelly Apr 2013

Attire And Appearance Of Orthodontists: A Survey Of Parent Preferences, Gillian Kelly

Theses and Dissertations

The objective of this study was to evaluate parents’ preferences of the appearance and attire of orthodontists. Six subjects were asked to pose for photographs wearing various combinations of attire (casual, scrubs, white coat, formal), hairstyle and nametag. Survey participants were presented with choice sets and asked to select the most and least preferred provider photographs. A total of 77 parents of orthodontic patients participated in the computer-based survey. The results indicated that there were significant differences due to provider sex (P = 0.0013), provider age (P < .0001), dress (P < .0001), nametag (P = 0.0065) and hair (P < .0001). The most preferred providers were the younger female and the older male. Formal attire or scrubs was the most preferred style of dress. There was also a preference for the use of a nametag and for the provider to have his/her hair in a controlled style.

Reading, Travel, And The Pedagogy Of Growing Up In Late Nineteenth-Century Germany, M. Stanley Majors Apr 2013

Reading, Travel, And The Pedagogy Of Growing Up In Late Nineteenth-Century Germany, M. Stanley Majors

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

This project brings together the domestic world of young adult reading with the foreign world of international travel that informed German experience at the end of the nineteenth century. By uniting these two ostensibly disparate realms under one interpretive frame, I offer a new perspective on the theory and practice of young-adult reading at the turn of the last century and the role this reading about travel played in the development of sense of self and sense of place within a national body.

My analysis reads specific youth literature about travel: Brigitte Augusti, Friedrich Pajeken) against depictions of youth reading …

Exhibiting Berthe Morisot After The Advent Of Feminist Art History, Kristie Couser Apr 2013

Exhibiting Berthe Morisot After The Advent Of Feminist Art History, Kristie Couser

Theses and Dissertations

Feminist art historians reassessed French Impressionist Berthe Morisot (1841-1895) throughout the late twentieth and early twenty-first century, a period in which her work coincidentally received steady exposure in major museum exhibitions. This thesis examines how the feminist art historical project intersects with exhibitions that give prominence to Morisot’s work. Critical reviews by Morisot scholars argue that more frequent display of the artist’s work has not correlated to nuanced interpretation. Moreover, prominent feminist scholars and museum theorists maintain that curators virtually exclude their contributions. Attending to these recurrent concerns, this thesis charts shifts in emphases and inquiry in writing centered on …

Euscorpius

Several new Calchas populations are studied from Turkey, including specimens from Hakkari Province, which borders the northern edge of Iraq. A new genus, Neocalchas, gen. nov., and two new species, Calchas anlasi, sp. nov. and C. kosswigi, sp. nov., are described. The two genera, Calchas and Neocalchas, are diagnosed by their hemispermatophore structure, chelal finger dentition, telson morphometrics and setation, and trichobothrial topology of the pedipalp chela. Genus Calchas Birula, 1899 includes four species: C. anlasi, sp. nov., C. birulai, C. kosswigi, sp. nov., and C. nordmanni; genus …

Warning Signs: A Study In The Proximate Causes Of Genocide, Bradley Ryktarsyk Apr 2013

Warning Signs: A Study In The Proximate Causes Of Genocide, Bradley Ryktarsyk

Honors Theses

This paper analyzes the cases of genocide in Bosnia and Rwanda as well as the humanitarian interventions in Kosovo and Libya to study the proximate causes of genocide. Proximate cause, defined as any event or condition, leading directly, or indirectly, to genocide, or the intervention by foreign powers, occurring within the immediate generation preceding the genocidal acts, or perceived threat thereof, is herein explored through Gregory Stanton’s “Eight Stages of Genocide” (1996). “The Eight Stages of Genocide” allows these cases to be examined through a preexisting, though imperfect, framework which compartmentalizes the process of genocide into stages allowing for analysis …

Phylogeography Of The California Gnatcatcher (Polioptila Californica) Using Multilocus Dna Sequences And Ecological Niche Modeling: Implications For Conservation, Robert M. Zink, Jeffrey G. Groth, Hernan Vázquez-Miranda Apr 2013

Phylogeography Of The California Gnatcatcher (Polioptila Californica) Using Multilocus Dna Sequences And Ecological Niche Modeling: Implications For Conservation, Robert M. Zink, Jeffrey G. Groth, Hernan Vázquez-Miranda

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

An important step in conservation is to identify whether threatened populations are evolutionarily discrete and significant to the species. A prior mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) phylogeographic study of the California Gnatcatcher (Polioptila californica) revealed no geographic structure and, thus, did not support the subspecies validity of the threatened coastal California Gnatcatcher (P. c. californica). The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service concluded that mtDNA data alone were insufficient to test subspecies taxonomy. We sequenced eight nuclear loci to search for historically discrete groupings that might have been missed by the mtDNA study (which we confirmed with new ND2 …

Business Groups As Hierarchies Of Firms: Determinants Of Vertical Integration And Performance, Carlo Altomonte, Armando Rungi Apr 2013

Business Groups As Hierarchies Of Firms: Determinants Of Vertical Integration And Performance, Carlo Altomonte, Armando Rungi

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

We explore the nature of Business Groups, that is network-like forms of hierarchical organization between legally autonomous firms spanning both within and across national borders. Exploiting a unique dataset of 270,474 headquarters controlling more than 1,500,000 (domestic and foreign) affiliates in all countries worldwide, we find that business groups account for a significant part of value-added generation in both developed and developing countries, with a prevalence in the latter. In order to characterize their boundaries, we distinguish between an affiliate vs. a group-level index of vertical integration, as well as an entropy-like metric able to summarize the hierarchical complexity of …

Do You Know How To Dance?: Mediating Identity Through Film And Dance In Visakhapatnam, India, Kaitlin Patterson, Dr. Charles Nuckolls

Journal of Undergraduate Research

I went to India to study gender relations in the family, but as I spent more time there I came to know a group of striking individuals and instead focused my research on a similar topic, film as a mediator of culture, but in this case a mediator for the deaf. The Omkar and Lions School for the Deaf (OLSD) looks out onto the bright blue bay of Visakhapatnam, India. Despite the beautiful view, the students rarely spend time in the water; their time is consumed with other things. They have school to go to, homework to complete, temple to …

The Picky Eater Premium?: The Effect Of Product Portfolio Size On The Price Consumers Pay For Fresh Produce, Wayne Sandholtz, Dr. Joseph Price Apr 2013

The Picky Eater Premium?: The Effect Of Product Portfolio Size On The Price Consumers Pay For Fresh Produce, Wayne Sandholtz, Dr. Joseph Price

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The purpose of this project was to examine whether consumers who buy a wider variety of distinct fresh fruits and vegetables pay lower average prices for fresh fruits and vegetables, by substituting away from fruits and vegetables during price shocks. In order to answer this question, I used Nielsen Homescan data, which records all grocery purchases of a nationally representative sample of households. Using regression analysis, I found little direct evidence that households which buy a wider variety of fresh fruits and vegetables pay lower prices for them. In fact, I was surprised to find that in general, higher-variety household …

A Climatology Of Lake-Effect Snowfall And Evaluation Of The Cobb Method For The Great Lakes Region, Seth Kutikoff Apr 2013

A Climatology Of Lake-Effect Snowfall And Evaluation Of The Cobb Method For The Great Lakes Region, Seth Kutikoff

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Accuracy in snowfall prediction has lagged behind other short-term weather forecasting areas. Errors in quantitative precipitation forecasts ensure that any snow ratio applied to snow may result in inaccurate snowfall amounts, and snowfall observations are not consistent or fully reliable. In this study, the Cobb Method is tested on lake-effect snowfalls to determine if the top-down ice crystal growth modeled in the algorithm can be applied to convective snowfalls. To establish the spatiotemporal and physical characteristics of lake-effect snowfalls at selected study locations near the Great Lakes, snowfall and snow ratio climatologies are produced that separate events by lake-effect and …

The Relationship Between Highly Qualified Teachers And Student Academic Achievement, Sherry Lou Macken Apr 2013

The Relationship Between Highly Qualified Teachers And Student Academic Achievement, Sherry Lou Macken

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This study examined the relationship between the percentage of highly qualified teachers and standardized measures of student proficiency in the core academic subjects of mathematics, reading, science, social studies, and writing. Signed into law in Janauary of 2002 by President George W. Bush, the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act requires teachers of core academic subjects to be highly qualified in subjects taught. According to the Association of Texas Professional Educators (2012), to be highly qualified under NCLB, a teacher must have "(1) at least a bachelor's degree, (2) full state certification, and (3) demonstrated subject-matter competency in the core …

The Reaction Of Small States To The Advancement Of The People's Republic Of China In The South China Sea, Michael Miller Apr 2013

The Reaction Of Small States To The Advancement Of The People's Republic Of China In The South China Sea, Michael Miller

Honors Theses

This paper will outline the internal and external factors that have spurred the People's Republic of China (PRC) to issue strong rhetoric and naval expansion in the defense of their claims to territory in the South China Sea (SCS). An analysis of the PRC's posturing will provide the contextual background necessary for answering the following research question central to this paper. What strategies have relatively less capable states engaged in the region as a reaction to the advancing capacity of the PRC? The escalation of tensions between the PRC and other states in the region, namely , the Republic of …

Mapping The Mediterranean: Bartolommeo Da Li Sonetti And The Isolario Tradition, Kelly Zacovic Apr 2013

Mapping The Mediterranean: Bartolommeo Da Li Sonetti And The Isolario Tradition, Kelly Zacovic

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis provides a detailed analysis of an Isolario, or a printed book of maps of the Aegean Islands, created in 1485 by an anonymous author called Bartolommeo da li Sonetti. Through a thorough analysis of the material properties and content of the book, this thesis seeks to revise previous scholarly interpretations of this long under-studied work of cartography. Examination of five extant copies of the 1485 Isolario and the alterations made to the pages by their owners reveals much about how the volume was consumed, read and utilized in fifteenth and sixteenth century. In opposition to previous conceptions of …

Dendroclimatology And Streamflow In Utah County, Nathan Gill, Dr. Matthew Bekker Apr 2013

Dendroclimatology And Streamflow In Utah County, Nathan Gill, Dr. Matthew Bekker

Journal of Undergraduate Research

This study was the first step in a larger effort by the Wasatch Dendroclimatology Research (WADR) group, consisting of researchers at Brigham Young University and Utah State University, to develop a better understanding of hydroclimatology in northern Utah. Our specific goals were to develop preliminary reconstructions of streamflow beyond the historical record for the Provo and Weber Rivers and Big Cottonwood Creek, all important contributors to the water resources of the heavily urbanized Wasatch Front.
