The Scandinavian Immigrant Experience In Utah, 1850--1920: Using Material Culture To Interpret Cultural Adaptation, Rachel Gianni Abbott Apr 2013

The Scandinavian Immigrant Experience In Utah, 1850--1920: Using Material Culture To Interpret Cultural Adaptation, Rachel Gianni Abbott

Arctic and Northern Studies

From 1850 to 1920, over 25,000 Scandinavians who had joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints emigrated to Utah to unite themselves with fellow Church members (Mormons) and build their Zion. These Scandinavian immigrants brought distinctive cultural heritages and traditions that contributed to the collective identity in Utah. The majority of literature on Scandinavian immigration to America and Scandinavian immigrants in America, however, neglects to consider the Mormon Scandinavian immigrants in the larger discourse. In addition, many historians of Utah history have concluded that Scandinavian immigrants assimilated culturally and left no trace of their Danish, Norwegian and Swedish …

The Effects Of Changes In Climate And Other Environmental Factors On Permafrost Evolution, Elchin Jafarov Apr 2013

The Effects Of Changes In Climate And Other Environmental Factors On Permafrost Evolution, Elchin Jafarov

Geosciences

Permafrost is a product of a past colder climate. It underlies most of the terrestrial Arctic, where it influences landscape hydrology, biogeochemical environments and human activity. The current thermal regime of permafrost is mediated by different environmental factors, including snow, topography, vegetation and soil texture. The dependence of permafrost on these factors greatly complicates the modeling of permafrost dynamics. Accurate modeling of these dynamics, however, is critical for evaluating potential impacts of climate change on permafrost stability. The objectives of this study were to a) improve modeling of ground temperature during snow season; b) analyze the effects of post-fire environmental …

Experiment Vs Nature: Using Amphiboles To Test Models Of Magma Storage And Pre-Eruptive Magma Dynamics Preceding The 2006 Eruption Of Augustine Volcano, Alaska, Sarah Massey Henton Apr 2013

Experiment Vs Nature: Using Amphiboles To Test Models Of Magma Storage And Pre-Eruptive Magma Dynamics Preceding The 2006 Eruption Of Augustine Volcano, Alaska, Sarah Massey Henton

Geosciences

This study investigates magmatic conditions preceding the 2006 eruption of Augustine Volcano through the use of amphibole compositions and textures. Due to their restricted stability region and common occurrence in calc-alkaline magmas, amphiboles are important for investigating pre-eruptive magmatic conditions at subduction zone volcanoes. Chapter 1 presents a study into geochemical and textural variations of natural amphibole phenocrysts in the erupted magmas. Magnesiohornblendes in the high- and low-silica andesites exhibit limited compositional variability. Intermediate-silica andesites and quenched mafic enclaves contain amphiboles that vary in composition and classification (magnesiohornblende-magnesiohastinsitetschermakite). Compositional variations are controlled by temperature-dependent substitutions. Both high-and low-silica andesites represent …

Reactions To English Language Learning In Chile As A Means For Personal And National Development, Kortnee Byrd

Master's Theses

In our globalized world today, English has developed into the worldwide

language. Chilean leaders, in connection to their development goals to reach a developed

country status by 2020, have highlighted the need for Chilean citizens to become

bilingual in order to attract foreign investment and further integrate into the world

market. Leaders also highlight how English education will serve as an equalizing

measure to combat the socioeconomic inequality that has plagued this country since

Spanish colonization. While the economic benefits are clear, questions remain as to what

the social and cultural costs will be. This research project presents how a …

Holobiont Nutrition: Considering The Role Of The Gastrointestinal Microbiota In The Health Benefits Of Whole Grains, Jens Walter, Ines Martinez, Devin J. Rose

Food for Health: Publications

Intake of whole grains and other food products high in dietary fiber have long been linked to the prevention of chronic diseases associated with inflammation. A contribution of the gastrointestinal microbiota to these effects has been suggested, but little is known on how whole grains interact with gut bacteria. We have recently published the first human trial that made use of next-generation sequencing to determine the effect of whole grains (whole grain barley, brown rice or a mixture of the two) on fecal microbiota structure and tested for associations between the gut microbiota and blood markers of inflammation, glucose and …

College of Arts and Sciences Poster Presentations

Research Question: Can a comprehensive, accurate, and detailed map of recreational trails be produced without stepping foot in the field? Remote sensing is "reconnaissance at a distance" (Colwell, 1966). Mapping is a three step process: 1.) basemap assembly, 2.) cartographic interpretation, 3.) review & correction. While a simple concept, remote sensing has traditionally been the left to the experts due to the high skill set and specialized computing equipment required to complete even the most rudimentary data preparation and processing tasks. Today, Google Earth, the National Agricultural Imagery Program (1m NAIP), global 30m digital elevation data (DEM), desktop ArcGIS, and …

J.R.R. Tolkien, Sub-Creation, And Theories Of Authorship, Benjamin Saxton Apr 2013

J.R.R. Tolkien, Sub-Creation, And Theories Of Authorship, Benjamin Saxton

Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature

Tolkien is unfortunately underrated as a theorist in literary studies—in fact, alas, generally invisible to the mainstream. This essay draws attention to his ideas about sub-creation and allegorical “dominion” of the reader, contrasting Tolkien’s stated and implied theories with those of Roland Barthes, and elucidating Tolkien’s concern with “the delicate balance between authors, authority, and interpretive freedom.” Saxton draws on “Leaf by Niggle,” The Silmarillion, and The Lord of the Rings for examples of Tolkien’s theories in action.

Found Poems, Member Checking And Crises Of Representation, Rosemary C. Reilly Apr 2013

Found Poems, Member Checking And Crises Of Representation, Rosemary C. Reilly

The Qualitative Report

In order to establish veracity , qualitative researchers frequently rely on member checks to insure credibility by giving participants opportunities to correct errors, challenge interpretations and assess results; however, member checks are not without drawbacks. This paper describes an innovative approach to conducting member checks. Six members of a learning organization participated in two group interviews to examine the use of poetry as a method to promote individual and organizational learning. Several weeks later, participants received a copy of their transcripts and were asked to create a “found poem” to reflect their thoughts and feelings about using poetry as a …
