Upper Class Enclave Identity: A Case Study Of The Golden Hill Community, Bradley D. Vogelsmeier May 2013

Upper Class Enclave Identity: A Case Study Of The Golden Hill Community, Bradley D. Vogelsmeier

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

Urban enclaves play an important role in sociological theory and in overall community development. This project looks at the exclusivity of a particular enclave in the Indianapolis area, the Golden Hill Community, and through observation and interviews, examines the makeup of this isolated community. Considered by many to be an exclusive upper-class neighborhood, this research looks closely at the social interaction of residents with each other, as well as the outside community, in order to determine its strength and significance as an urban enclave. This paper suggests that Golden Hill, contrary to other upper class urban enclaves, exhibits a type …

Phylogeography Of Sepioteuthis Lessoniana (The Bigfin Reef Squid) And Uroteuthis Duvauceli (The Indian Squid)., Alexis M. Bergman May 2013

Phylogeography Of Sepioteuthis Lessoniana (The Bigfin Reef Squid) And Uroteuthis Duvauceli (The Indian Squid)., Alexis M. Bergman

Honors Theses

Sepioteuthis lessoniana (the bigfin reef squid) and Uroteuthis duvauceli (the Indian squid) are two squid species found in largely overlapping regions in the Indian and Pacific Oceans. While both squids are important to fisheries throughout their ranges, very little taxonomic work has been done on either of them. Previous studies have led scientists to believe that S. lessoniana is actually a species complex (for example, there appear to be three species of “S. cf. lessoniana” in Japanese waters alone). The similarly broad geographic range of U. duvauceli suggests that this species could also harbor substantial …

Mccarthy's Outer Dark And Child Of God As Works Of Appalachian Gothic Fiction., Ava E. Gooding May 2013

Mccarthy's Outer Dark And Child Of God As Works Of Appalachian Gothic Fiction., Ava E. Gooding

Undergraduate Honors Theses

In both Outer Dark and Child of God, McCarthy does a masterful job of blending the elements of Appalachian Gothic to present a novel that is darkly suspenseful and grimly thought-provoking. Outer Dark focuses on the complex incestuous relationship between a brother and sister and their interaction with others. The novel follows the two on a journey through the wilderness where they must cope with the unknown qualities of that wilderness, as well as the guilt stemming from their own behaviors. In Child of God, McCarthy explores the grotesque nature of a life lived in isolation and poverty in the …

Public School Desegregation In America: How School Desegregation Became The Most Important Medium For Advancing Social Justice., Michael Huening

Undergraduate Honors Theses

The purpose of this work is to identify the particular changes in the movement for social justice for African Americans. Great strides in the advancement of social justice began just after the Second World War. Issues of ideology, foreign policy, advancement in education, and growing activism led to what is known as the Civil Rights Movement. The Civil Rights Movement was a determined effort by African Americans and their supporters to eliminate legal and societal oppression. Measured by the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Voting Act of 1965, and the equal opportunity employment section of Lyndon …

Tung Tried: Agricultural Policy And The Fate Of A Gulf South Oilseed Industry, 1902-1969, Whitney Adrienne Snow May 2013

Tung Tried: Agricultural Policy And The Fate Of A Gulf South Oilseed Industry, 1902-1969, Whitney Adrienne Snow

Theses and Dissertations

The U.S. tung oil industry began as a government experiment in plant diversification but businessmen mistakenly interpreted this interest as an endorsement of domestic production and began growing tung trees in the Gulf South states of Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Texas. The new crop quickly caught the attention of paint, varnish, and ink companies in the northern and Midwestern states and created a buzz among chemurgists like Henry Ford and other industrialists who eagerly expanded tung acreage. With the erection of the first crushing mill in 1928, the tung oil industry began but it did not acquire any …

Conversation Of Values: A Community Perspective Of Sustainable Development Criteria Concerning Revitalization Efforts In Jackson, Mississippi, Kenneth Barry White May 2013

Conversation Of Values: A Community Perspective Of Sustainable Development Criteria Concerning Revitalization Efforts In Jackson, Mississippi, Kenneth Barry White

Theses and Dissertations

Jackson, Mississippi is currently undergoing a revitalization movement in an attempt to revive its blighted downtown core. While physical development is crucial to revival of the downtown landscape, the cultural landscape must also be considered. I hypothesized that developers, business owners, and residents working or living in and around downtown Jackson would report differing desires, positions, and values concerning four elements of sustainable development: cultural, economic, political, and environmental. Ultimately, the hypothesis was refuted according to the quantitative data analysis. However, there were different understandings within the qualitative data where the substance of this research project can be found. These …

Economic Assessment Of The Construction Industry: A Construction-Economics Nexus, Herbert Marion Barber

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to conduct an economic assessment of the construction industry. More specifically, this study addresses ambiguities within the literature that are associated with the construction-economics nexus. The researcher 1) investigated the relationships between economic indicators and stock prices of U.S. construction equipment manufacturers, 2) investigated the relationships between energy production, consumption, and corruption, and 3) determined the economic effect electricity generation and electricity consumption has on economies of scale. The researcher used descriptive and inferential statistics in this study and determined that economists, researchers, policy-makers, and others should have predicted the 2007-08 world economic collapse …

Background: Migration of Nepali workers to India is a longstanding phenomenon. Studies have indicated that migrant workers are at higher-risk of HIV infection due to their engagement in unsafe sexual and substance use behaviors, while abroad. This study aims to evaluate the possible association between migration and increased prevalence of HIV-risk behaviors among Nepali migrant workers and their vulnerability to HIV/AIDS.

Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among male migrant workers (n=40) in Dhanusha district of Nepal - a neighboring region to India with high levels of male-out-migration. The interview questionnaires assessed participants’ socio-demographics, migration characteristics, loneliness, HIV/AIDS …

Peter Warlock (1894-1930): A Contextual Analysis Of His Art Songs Related To Symptoms Of Mental Illness, Judy O. Marchman

Open Access Dissertations

The purpose of this essay is to explore and examine the value of Philip Heseltine’s art song and to provide a contextual analysis for performance related to symptoms of mental illness. Currently, Heseltine’s repertoire is not considered a primary source for songs in English. This essay also provides insight as to reasons why Heseltine’s repertoire is less widely performed (or considered) than others. Heseltine’s art songs are discussed, along with characteristics relevant to Heseltine’s compositional style. Additional discussion includes dissection of Heseltine’s personality and behavior, illustrated in personal correspondence and other biographical materials. A comparison is made between the symptoms …

Supporting Teachers’ Professional Development: Investigating The Impact Of A Targeted Intervention On Teachers’ Presentation Of Opportunities To Respond, Ashley S. Macsuga-Gage

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation aimed to explore the effects of a targeted professional development package within the context of a multi-tiered system of support (MTSS) model for professional development (PD) on teachers’ rates of presentation of opportunities to respond during teacher-directed phonics instruction. Research indicates that increased presentation of teacher-directed opportunities to respond (TD-OTR), an evidence-based classroom management strategy with demonstrated positive impacts on student academic and behavioral outcomes, may be one of the most critical classroom management practices available to teachers. I aimed to use an experimental single subject multiple baseline design across teachers, to examine the effects of a targeted …

Rainwater Harvesting: Examining The Potential Of Rainfall Collection As A Stormwater Best Management Practice And A Supplement To Municipal Water At Wku, Ashley C. Mccloughan

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

This study seeks to quantify the potential amount of rainwater that could be harvested from Western Kentucky University’s main campus roof spaces and to evaluate the potential environmental and economic value of such an initiative in light of the global water crisis. Roof areas and historic rainfall data were used to enumerate the potential quantity of water averted by the selected buildings. Limited literature exists on the potential for rainwater harvesting in reducing quantity of surface runoff and what that means for stormwater management, so an evaluation was performed on the implications these installations could have specifically for WKU’s stormwater …

An Analysis Of Public Education Informatics, Brandon Moss

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Information systems and informatics technologies are employed to increase profitability and efficiency of business models. The most common mistake made by managers, when incorporating informatics into their business model, is under-utilizing the technological capacity of their resources and investing in extraneous functions. This thesis will examine the usage of information systems and informatics principles in the United States public education system. Approaching the case from a consultant’s perspective, this paper will map out the business model theory, its actual implementation, and identify key failure points and areas of improvement in informatics usage. The structure of the thesis follows the first …

Mattathias' Other Son: The Story Of The Maccabean Revolt (A Novel), Ameliah E. Given

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

In Jewish primary and secondary literature regarding the Maccabean Revolt, Judas, the son of the man who began the revolt, is depicted as a warrior of epic proportions. Despite a Seleucid king’s attempt to squelch out Jewish practices, Judas propelled the people to religious freedom through his military strategy and might. After his untimely death in battle, his younger brother Jonathan finally succeeded in gaining political freedom for the Jewish people. Throughout his lifetime, Jonathan’s feats of valor rivaled, if not surpassed those of his brother Judas. Despite this, Jonathan’s story and life are not given the attention they deserve. …

International Trials, Rule Of Law And Local Legal Consciousness In Croatia: Can International Justice Transform Local Norms?, Katharine B. Richards May 2013

International Trials, Rule Of Law And Local Legal Consciousness In Croatia: Can International Justice Transform Local Norms?, Katharine B. Richards

Doctoral Dissertations

In this dissertation I evaluate the efforts of international tribunals to strengthen the rule of law from the perspective of the people who were directly involved in the war crimes, whether as a victim, perpetrator, or both. My research in a small Croatian community is an investigation of the local legal consciousness to understand if tenets of the rule of law promoted by the tribunal are compatible with the prevailing norms. The focus on a community of Serb returnees and Bosnian Croat refugees highlights the concerns of minorities living in Croatia after the 1990s conflict that included ethnic cleansing, displacement …

The Status Of Economic And Social Rights In Appalachia, Logan Thomas

Master's Theses

This research examines the status of economic and social rights (ESR) in Appalachia by examining county-level data for both the region and entire United States. Individual rights and total ESR fulfillment are examined based upon indices utilized in the research. Effort to fulfill ESR is also examined based upon available resources, as measured by per capita income in the counties. Findings indicate that the northern part of the region experiences both high fulfillment and effort, the central part of the region experiences low fulfillment and average effort, and the southern part of the region experiences average fulfillment and low effort.

Engineering Education Faculty Publications

This volume, part of Sense Publishers’ International Technology Education Series, is a collection of 16 presentations from the 2009 Pupils’ Attitudes Towards Technology (PATT) conference held in Delft, The Netherlands. The papers in this compilation have been reviewed and revised since their presentation at the conference, but most of them retain the relatively informal flavor of conference presentations. The papers rely heavily upon work completed by the authors in their respective settings, so the reader gets a sense of their personal experiences in program development, implementation, and research in the countries represented in the volume. It is fortunate that the …

Chinese Whiteness: The Discourse Of Race In Modern And Contemporary Chinese Culture, Kirstin Clouser

Honors Theses

This thesis chronicles the development of western forms of race and racism in China. It then studies contemporary China using theories derived from whiteness studies in order to explain the unique position that whites (Caucasians) have in China today. In Chapter I, I break down the definition of race and introduce a foundation for a whiteness studies approach to research. In Chapter II, I analyze how Chinese classified themselves and other humans prior to the western system of race. In Chapter III, I chronicle the introduction of western forms of race and racism to China, and the appropriation of these …

Death By Injustice: Uganda’S Anti-Homosexuality Laws, Christian Fundamentalism, And The Politics Of Global Power, Dylan Harris May 2013

Death By Injustice: Uganda’S Anti-Homosexuality Laws, Christian Fundamentalism, And The Politics Of Global Power, Dylan Harris

The Catalyst

Across Africa, the persecution of gay people is gaining momentum. Gay people have been denied health care, detained, tortured, and killed. In 2009, the Ugandan parliament drafted The Anti-Homosexuality Bill, which has accrued significant attention, mostly negative, from the international community. However, it seems that any attention, positive or negative, only serves to fan the flames from which the laws were created. Anti-homosexuality laws, both formal and informal, have existed for decades within Uganda, but the current laws being drafted are by far the most formal and comprehensive. This paper will examine the political and religious context in which …

Unpacking Producer / Consumer Relationships In Ethical Markets: A Look At Portland's Diy Sector, Renée Bogin Curtis May 2013

Unpacking Producer / Consumer Relationships In Ethical Markets: A Look At Portland's Diy Sector, Renée Bogin Curtis

Student Research Symposium

This presentation analyzes ethical consumption practices in alternative markets with a sector-specific focus evaluation of indicators and impacts. The paper reviews qualitative research conducted on Portland’s artisan economy with a focus on the independent or do-it-yourself (DIY) craft sector and presents follow up methods. General findings demonstrate ways market perceptions of sector participants reveal value-driven practices, illustrate impacts on production (through the role of place), and highlight impacts of market practices on producer accountability and consumer choices. Specific findings indicate drivers of the DIY market include integrity of production and consumption, communitarian values, minimal concern about competition, and attitudes of …
