Not Gaelic, But Free. Not Free, But Gaelic: The Role Of The Irish Language In Cultural And Political Nationalism In Ireland, Jeanne Buckley

Library Faculty Scholarship

The title of this paper paraphrases a quote by Patrick Pearse, an Irish poet, writer, nationalist and political activist who was killed by the British for his participation in the Easter 1916 uprising. These words seem fitting for a discussion on the connection between politics and the Irish language in 19th and early 20thcentury Ireland, which this paper addresses.

The Irish language and Ireland’s creation as a nation are intricately linked. After the Great Famine of the 19th century, the rise of cultural nationalism within Ireland, fueled by its writers, convinced the Irish that they existed …

Between The Map And The Territory: Taking The World Apart In The Age Of Un-Discovery, Carla Lacey Fisher Schwartz May 2013

Between The Map And The Territory: Taking The World Apart In The Age Of Un-Discovery, Carla Lacey Fisher Schwartz

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

The map is demonstrative of a basic human impulse, the desire to understand our surroundings and our position within the world. Through the activity of mapmaking, we aspire to comprehend comprehensively, but the very nature of the map allows for only partial understanding. Despite this objective for total knowledge, the blank space of a map is a necessity; in order for a map to be useful it must leave some aspects out. This blank space, along with other blanks in visual representation, is an active silence, and holds meaning in its absence.

While the map attempts to represent a territory, …

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

The long-term climatic and environmental history of Southeast Asia, and of Thailand in particular, is still fragmentary. Here we present a new 14C-dated, multi-proxy sediment record (TOC, C/N, CNS isotopes, Si, Zr, K, Ti, Rb, Ca elemental data, biogenic silica) for Lake Kumphawapi, the second largest natural lake in northeast Thailand. The data set provides a reconstruction of changes in lake status, groundwater fluctuations, and catchment run-off during the Holocene. A comparison of multiple sediment sequences and their proxies suggests that the summer monsoon was stronger between c. 9800 and 7000 cal yr BP. Lake status and water level …

A website was created to display both written descriptions and videos of the signs, and 180 countries with 314 total variations were identified, documented, recorded, coded and analyzed. A thorough literature review was conducted and an analysis of phonological …

The Power Of Perceptions: How Social Capital Is Being Impacted By Crime And Corruption In Mexico, Pablo G. Paras May 2013

The Power Of Perceptions: How Social Capital Is Being Impacted By Crime And Corruption In Mexico, Pablo G. Paras

Doctoral Dissertations

Coinciding with the transition to democracy in Mexico (and elsewhere in Latin America), violent crime increased substantially and joined with the citizenry’s concerns about corruption. The overarching question of the research can be summarized as: How and how much do perceptions and experiences with crime and corruption impact democracy? In its most general conception the thesis is that in Mexico, an increasingly adverse context (experience + perceptions) of crime and corruption has a negative and significant impact on social capital. This discussion can be viewed as a partial assessment of the quality of democracy in Mexico. The topic is of …

Creating Healthy Work Environments (CHWE)

Session presented on Saturday, April 13, 2013:

Background: Healthy work environments are essential to optimize quality patient and family centered care. The American Association of Critical Care Nurses (AACN) has identified the irrefutable link between healthy work environments and patient safety, nurse retention, and recruitment.

The Influence Of The “Celtic” Revival: Quest For Paradise In Chwedl Iarlles Y Ffynnon, Le Chevalier Au Lion, And Frances Hodgson Burnett’S The Secret Garden, Grace Vasington May 2013

The Influence Of The “Celtic” Revival: Quest For Paradise In Chwedl Iarlles Y Ffynnon, Le Chevalier Au Lion, And Frances Hodgson Burnett’S The Secret Garden, Grace Vasington

Honors Scholar Theses

I re-situate Frances Hodgson Burnett's The Secret Garden (1911) within the context of the 19th-century Medieval Revival. Typically cast as an Eden allegory, Burnett's "secret garden" employs myth, folklore, and medieval romance quest narratives, and taps into the 19th-century mythicizing of the British landscape to explore contemporary questions about belief and social order. By complicating current readings of The Secret Garden, this paper interrogates the simplistic mold within which Burnett as an author has often been cast. It likewise calls attention to the varied impact of the Medieval Revival on different genres. This generic mutation exemplified by The Secret …

From Demonic Possession To Conversion Disorder: A Historical Comparison, Laura Hatchman May 2013

From Demonic Possession To Conversion Disorder: A Historical Comparison, Laura Hatchman

Honors Scholar Theses

My thesis compares analyses of early-modern understandings of demonic possession in the West to discussion of modern cases of mass conversion disorder, specifically focusing on episodes involving large groups of affected individuals. My research on the early modern period includes a literature review of the famous seventeenth-century case of mass possession at Loudun and a lengthy examination of possession from the vantage point of key societal players. On a parallel track, I have identified and recent psychological and medical literature pertaining to modern cases of what is called “mass hysteria,” “epidemic hysteria,” “conversion disorder,” and “mass psychogenic illness.” By examining …

Keeping It In Context: Examining Spatial Stratification Of College Attendance For Rural, Urban And Suburban Students, Rachel Leventhal-Weiner May 2013

Keeping It In Context: Examining Spatial Stratification Of College Attendance For Rural, Urban And Suburban Students, Rachel Leventhal-Weiner

Doctoral Dissertations

Though rural schools have closed a long-standing high school graduation gap compared with urban schools, they struggle to achieve parity in college graduation rates. Sociology of education literature on college attendance explains this stratification using race/ethnic or social class differences, but has not fully explored spatial stratification comparing urban, suburban and rural students. Stratification research is typically rooted in status attainment and social reproduction theories, yet these frameworks rarely situate student outcomes in spatial context. Using data from the Education Longitudinal Study of 2002, I examine the spatial stratification of factors related to college attendance and use these factors to …
