Finding Rna-Dna Hybrid Viruses, Jeremy Filip, Geoffery S. Diemer, Kenneth M. Stedman May 2013

Finding Rna-Dna Hybrid Viruses, Jeremy Filip, Geoffery S. Diemer, Kenneth M. Stedman

Student Research Symposium

Until extremely recently it was thought that recombination between DNA and RNA viruses was practically nonexistent. The discovery of the "RNA-DNA Hybrid Virus" (RDHV) genome in a metavirome from a hightemperature acidic lake changed this view (Diemer and Stedman, 2012). We, and others, have discovered multiple examples of this recombination "hiding in plain sight" in multiple both published and unpublished metagenomes from many different environments and recent publications (Rosario et al., 2012 a Tae Woong Whon et al, 2012, Mitsuhiro Yoshida et al., 2013, and several others through personal communication). Comparing the proteins within these hybrid viruses against each other …

Paisajes Escenicos: El Teatro En La Ciudad Global. Buenos Aires 1988-2010, Carlos Ariel Gutierrez Torres

Open Access Dissertations

Globalization is fundamentally an economic process that influences all levels of everyday life transforming ways of production, thought, creation and experience. As such, globalization offers a compelling analytical polyphony that has been approached theoretically from historical, geographical, sociological and anthropological points of view. Although the notion of a globalized world is not a new concept, to study globalization from the perspective of a city offers an interesting set of perspectives. Nonetheless, there are very few studies, and none in relation to Latin America, that address the issue of the globalized city taking the theater scene as the starting point of …

The Religious Formation Of Graduate Ministry Students In An Online Wisdom Community, Michael David Porterfield May 2013

The Religious Formation Of Graduate Ministry Students In An Online Wisdom Community, Michael David Porterfield

Dissertations

Online and hybrid programs are becoming more commonplace in higher education, especially in graduate theological education, but little research has been done in this area. This study helps to add to the body of research on online and hybrid theological programs. In graduate theological education there is a dynamic process of transformation that happens to individuals. In years past, this transformative paradigm could only have happened in a physical location, but now this process of deep reflection and communal interaction can be done in an online wisdom community. When one defines community by what people do together instead of by …

Eating Spaces And Places: Examining The Latin@ Barrio, Chinatown, And Black Urban Space As Sites Of Collective And Social Imagination, Kathlynn E. Hinkfuss

American Studies Honors Projects

I focus on three specific neighborhood tropes that are commonly understood and accepted in the American social imagination: the Latin@ Barrio, Chinatown, and Black Urban Space. I examine how these three neighborhood tropes show up in and play out on physical examples of these spaces. I identify three currently existing neighborhoods in the Upper Midwest: the South Side of Milwaukee, Chinatown in Chicago, and North Minneapolis. To more specifically interrogate the connection between the abstract and concrete, I argue that specific sites of analysis in each neighborhood are symbolically and physically consumed: the Mexican restaurant “La Perla” in Milwaukee, the …

A Dividing City And Limited Education: An Analysis Of School Segregation In Chicago, Illinois And Seattle, Washington, Ricardo J. Millhouse

American Studies Honors Projects

Contemporary, residential housing patterns in Chicago, IL and Seattle, WA are becoming re-segregated. I argue the politics of locality tends to catalyze white flight, increase racial and economic isolation, and explicate a skills mismatch phenomenon. By definition, the politics of locality is the way in which individuals choose to separate themselves to protect their property, or the way in which individuals are forcibly situated geographically. This project examines questions of race, class, and citizenship, while analyzing the residential patterns, economic opportunities, and educational policies in Chicago and Seattle, respectively

Pre-Miocene Birth Of The Yangtze River, Hongbo Zheng, Peter D. Clift, Ping Wang, Ryuji Tada, Juntao Jia, Mengying He, Fred Jourdan

Faculty Publications

The development of fluvial systems in East Asia is closely linked to the evolving topography following India-Eurasia collision. Despite this, the age of the Yangtze River system has been strongly debated, with estimates ranging from 40 to 45 Ma, to a more recent initiation around 2 Ma. Here, we present 40Ar/39Ar ages frombasalts interbedded with fluvial sediments from the lower reaches of the Yangtze together with detrital zircon U-Pb ages from sand grains within these sediments. We show that a river containing sediments indistinguishable from the modern river was established before ~23 Ma. We argue that the connection through the …

Nos Ancêtres, Les Pervers: Reading Queerly And Constructing The Homosexual Before The Closet (1810-1830), Gary C. Kilian Mr.

Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Honors Projects

Homosexuality is, popularly imagined, a twentieth-century phenomenon wherein medicine created homosexual identity and society worked to stigmatize it. Yet the proto-homosexual role can be traced to several notable historical figures before the rise of medicine at the end of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth century, especially through literature, and this is most apparent in France, which had been the first country to decriminalize same-sex relations in private after the adoption of the Napoleonic Code. But how do we understand same-sex desire and homosexuality before the homosexual existed as such while respecting the oftentimes-unclear nuances of human …

Habitat And Host Indicate Lineage Identity In Colletotrichum Gloeosporioides S.L. From Wild And Agricultural Landscapes In North America, Vinson P. Doyle, Peter V. Oudemans, Stephen A. Rehner, Amy Litt

Faculty Publications

Understanding the factors that drive the evolution of pathogenic fungi is central to revealing the mechanisms of virulence and host preference, as well as developing effective disease control measures. Prerequisite to these pursuits is the accurate delimitation of species boundaries. Colletotrichum gloeosporioides s.l. is a species complex of plant pathogens and endophytic fungi for which reliable species recognition has only recently become possible through a multi-locus phylogenetic approach. By adopting an intensive regional sampling strategy encompassing multiple hosts within and beyond agricultural zones associated with cranberry (Vaccinium macrocarpon Aiton), we have integrated North America strains of Colletotrichum gloeosporioides s.l. from …

Medical Metropolis: The Impacts Of The Healthcare Industry On Rochester, Minnesota, Agata J. Miszczyk May 2013

Medical Metropolis: The Impacts Of The Healthcare Industry On Rochester, Minnesota, Agata J. Miszczyk

Geography Honors Projects

Specialized-function cities are dominated by one or two related industries that comprise the majority of the economic base of the area. Rochester, Minnesota is a prime example of such a city. The case of Rochester challenges much of conventional theory regarding economic diversification and spillovers of different economic systems. This case study presents new ideas regarding these spillovers and the success of specializations, as well as provides an in-depth analysis of the affect the Mayo Clinic - a premier medical facility – has on the local infrastructure and economy. This study illustrates how the healthcare industry has shaped Rochester's urban …

Rural Renaissance: The Redevelopment Of Rapid City, South Dakota, Callie S. Tysdal May 2013

Rural Renaissance: The Redevelopment Of Rapid City, South Dakota, Callie S. Tysdal

Geography Honors Projects

By many quantitative measures set by the United States Census and academic literature, Rapid City, South Dakota is an urban settlement. However, Rapid City is a thriving example of how a city and its residents willfully and overtly ascribe to a rural identity. This rural character is very present in local discussions, events, lifestyles, and institutions in Rapid City. As recently as 2012, the previously fading downtown of Rapid City has undergone a renewal that cannot escape notice. Main Street Square, a new downtown attraction that provides outdoor gathering spaces for entertainment, recreation, and cuisine, has brought new life to …

The Painted City: Public Art, Placemaking, And Communities In The Twin Cities, Lora Marie P. Hlavsa May 2013

The Painted City: Public Art, Placemaking, And Communities In The Twin Cities, Lora Marie P. Hlavsa

Geography Honors Projects

Over the last century, mural painting has become an increasingly prominent fixture within the urban landscape. Decorating the walls of urban streets throughout American cities, mural paintings can be considered powerful tools within urban communities because of their ability to create place through inspiring meaningful relationships between populations and space, represent marginalized populations and provide a means for expression for communities. Using the case studies of Northeast Minneapolis, the West Side of Saint Paul, and Lake Street, this paper examines the purpose of mural artwork within urban communities, focusing on spatial and contextual analysis to determine the impact of this …

An Autoethnography: Constructing (& Interpreting) Cross - Cultural Awareness Through The Mind Of A Peace Corps Volunteer, Kenneth Carano

The Qualitative Report

In the form of an autoethnography, a returned Peace Corps volunteer examines how, when, and if, he was able to establish a significant level of cross - cultural awareness while living in Surname, South America for two years. Employing a process called emotional recall, the author analyzed two years worth of personal journals kept during his time in Suriname. The author writes about the explored interactions of his physical/temporal reality and “enacted” reality to provide examples of going through the first three levels and his fleeting attainment of the fourth level of cross - cultural awareness. Ultimately, one of the …

Water And The Architect: Architecture As Decentralized Water Management, Daniel A. Williamson May 2013

Water And The Architect: Architecture As Decentralized Water Management, Daniel A. Williamson

Architecture Masters of Science Program: Theses

Water is the essence of life, a material, a resource, a commodity. It is volatile, fragile, devastating, nourishing and is ultimately spatial. The design of how water spatially inhabits, flows, and interacts with our built life has seen many forms, functions, systems, failures and successes. Over the course of history those who have had the opportunity to define our relationship with water has spread across numerous disciplines, and touched many professions. The architectural relationship with water has seen an unfortunate bifurcation over the past two centuries. It is this separation of architecture from adequately and actively engaging water management, primarily …
