Soy Gaucho: Nationalism And Modernity In Argentina, Geneva M. L. Smith Jul 2013

Soy Gaucho: Nationalism And Modernity In Argentina, Geneva M. L. Smith

Anthropology ETDs

Set in rural Argentina, debates over cultural recognition, land rights, and economic opportunity have been waged throughout the countrys history. By lodging the analysis in Argentina's rural zones, this project examines the series of neoliberal economic policies that led to a widespread shift to agricultural biotechnology, the ensuing social effects including urbanization due to decreasing rural labor opportunities, and the potential for new or hybridized political economies in the form of post-neoliberalism that have emerged out of Argentina's devastating 2001 economic crisis. In recent years, there have been accelerated agronomic and demographic shifts in Argentina's rural sector as farmers turn …

Domestic Counterinsurgency: How Counterinsurgency Tactics Combined With Laws Were Deployed Against Blacks Throughout U.S. History, William Y. Chin Jul 2013

Domestic Counterinsurgency: How Counterinsurgency Tactics Combined With Laws Were Deployed Against Blacks Throughout U.S. History, William Y. Chin

University of Miami Race & Social Justice Law Review

Long before the United States engaged in counterinsurgency overseas in Iraq and Afghanistan, the United States engaged in counterinsurgency domestically against blacks. The history of America is a history of enduring conflict between black insurgents and white counterinsurgents. This conflict began centuries ago with the forced transport of enslaved blacks to America’s shores. From the beginning, whites employed all levers of national power including laws to suppress black resistance. The laws became counterinsurgency weapons launched against blacks in an internal conflict lasting generations.

Practice Resurrection: Urban Planning, The Right To The City, And Transformative Social Justice, Megan Hebard Mcrobert Jul 2013

Practice Resurrection: Urban Planning, The Right To The City, And Transformative Social Justice, Megan Hebard Mcrobert

Architecture and Planning ETDs

Social justice movements organize against contemporary conditions of oppression and domination. Today’s movements often target neoliberalism as an agent of both economic and cultural marginalization, citing environmental degradation, increasing wealth disparities in the information/service economy, and destruction of community-based institutions in the name of capital accumulation. One such example is the right to the city, both an intellectual idea and organizing framework for social action. The right to the city utilizes a Marxist framework to argue that cities are part of capitalist processes of production and, thus, space can and must be a site of intervention in the service of …

From Punitive To Proactive: An Alternative Approach For Responding To Hiv Criminalization That Departs From Penalizing Marginalized Communities, Angela Perone Jul 2013

From Punitive To Proactive: An Alternative Approach For Responding To Hiv Criminalization That Departs From Penalizing Marginalized Communities, Angela Perone

UC Law SF Journal on Gender and Justice

Laws passed during the early stages of the HIV epidemic targeted people with HIV before researchers fully understood transmission and prevention of the disease. These laws now serve as vestiges of fear and misinformation about HIV transmission. These laws also perpetuate systems of inequality by enabling bias and misinformation to permeate the courts. As such, new approaches to HIV transmission should move from a punitive model and more toward a proactive transformative model. This article proposes a multi-pronged approach to destigmatize and decriminalize HIV involving community, legislative, and educational structural changes.

Researching Market And Supply-Chain Opportunities For Local Foods Systems: Setting Priorities And Identifying Linkages, Dawn Thilmany, David Conner, Kynda R. Curtis, Chyi-Lyi Kathleen Liang, Kranti Mulik, Jeffrey O'Hara, Martha Sullins, Timothy A. Woods

Agricultural Economics Faculty Publications

There is an increasing array of land-grant, nonprofit, and other academic programs intended to support the development of food system enterprises and programs. However, research to track consumers' evolving preferences and behaviors within these systems and to measure the intended policy outcomes of any public investments in these systems is lagging. This research commentary represents a compilation of opinions and insights from those who are interested in exploring research priorities for economic, marketing, and supply-chain aspects of local food systems. The priorities that emerge are framed in the following way: (1) opportunities for increased and more targeted research to help …

Wetlands Regulation In An Era Of Climate Change: Can Section 404 Meet The Challenge?, Alyson C. Flournoy, Allison Fischman

UF Law Faculty Publications

This Article raises the question of how we should assess the potential threat to wetlands posed by the impacts of a changing climate and considers the role that section 404 of the Clean Water Act can play both in assessing and responding to that threat. Our inquiry is two-fold. First, should we be concerned about climate impacts on wetlands? And if so, how can section 404 help us to assess and respond to this threat?

Part I surveys the scientific literature on the projected impacts of climate change of particular relevance to wetlands and the impacts anticipated for particular types …

Jurisgenerative Constitutionalism: Procedural Principles For Managing Global Legal Pluralism, Paul Schiff Berman Jul 2013

Jurisgenerative Constitutionalism: Procedural Principles For Managing Global Legal Pluralism, Paul Schiff Berman

Indiana Journal of Global Legal Studies

Global Legal Pluralism recognizes the inevitability (and sometimes even the desirability) of multiple legal and quasi-legal systems purporting to regulate the same act or actor. However, the resulting pluralism-just as inevitably-creates conflicts among norms that are potentially intractable. Thus, legal systems must address how best to respond to the realities of pluralism. This inquiry has constitutional dimensions because it goes to the constitutive character of communities and their relationships with other communities, be they international, transnational, national, subnational, or epistemic.

One response to pluralism is jurispathic: "kill off" all competing laws by declaring that one set of norms-and only one-shall …

Marital Status And Privilege, Laura A. Rosenbury Jul 2013

Marital Status And Privilege, Laura A. Rosenbury

UF Law Faculty Publications

This essay challenges the privilege attaching to marriage as a distinct form of relationship. Responding to Angela Onwuachi-Willig’s new book, According to Our Hearts: Rhinelander v. Rhinelander and the Law of the Multiracial Family, the essay identifies the legal and extralegal privileges flowing not just to monoracial marriage but to marriage. States recognize and support one form of relationship between adults to the exclusion of all others, creating privilege that flows outside of the home into the workplace and beyond. Instead of arguing that such privilege should be distributed more equally between monoracial and multiracial couples, this essay seeks …

Disaster, Resilience And Security In Global Cities, Tim Prior, Florian Roth Jul 2013

Disaster, Resilience And Security In Global Cities, Tim Prior, Florian Roth

Journal of Strategic Security

Today the majority of the globe’s inhabitants live in urban areas, and according to all prognoses, cities will continue to grow in the coming decades. Global cities are also becoming increasingly connected as a result of economic, political, cultural and demographic globalization. In the context of urban security management, the growing complexity these connections bring may present a double-edged sword: global cities can be both the most secure and the most dangerous places to be when disaster strikes. Developing appropriate mechanisms to prepare for and cope with complex crises in cities will, in the future, be a key aspect of …

Does Boyer’S Integrated Scholarships Model Work On The Ground? An Adaption Of Boyer’S Model For Scholarly Professional Development, William E. Boyd Jul 2013

Does Boyer’S Integrated Scholarships Model Work On The Ground? An Adaption Of Boyer’S Model For Scholarly Professional Development, William E. Boyd

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Boyer’s model of four scholarships as an integrated system engaging and integrating the scholarships of discovery, integration, application, and teaching is being increasingly adopted both by individual scholars and institutions. Here I reflect on my own adoption of this approach almost a decade ago, and I describe one application, its use in defining my professional academic profile. While this does not directly address issues of pedagogy, it provides a sound basis for improved pedagogical practice in higher education. I assess my adoption of Boyer’s model against several benchmarks grounded in the social life of academe: success of promotion; mentoring peers …

Tanning (Anglo-Australian) Whiteness, Elaine Laforteza Jul 2013

Tanning (Anglo-Australian) Whiteness, Elaine Laforteza

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

This paper is a response to comments on my paper “The Whitening of Brown Skins and the Darkening of Whiteness” published in Reconstruction Vol. 7, No. 1, 2007, wherein I discuss skin-whitening practices within the Filipino diaspora. Many of these comments remarked that the practice of tanning one’s skin a darker colour was diametrically opposed to the practice of whitening one’s skin with cosmetic lotions and soaps. This paper challenges the idea that tanning runs counter to hegemonic ideals about whiteness. In fact, it does the opposite to mark how whiteness shapes how tanning is embodied. Consequently, the paper demonstrates …

Disparitas, Konvergensi, Dan Determinan Produktivitas Tenaga Kerja Regional Di Indonesia, Aisyah Fitri Yuniasih, Muhammad Firdaus, Idqan Fahmi

Jurnal Ekonomi dan Pembangunan Indonesia

Indonesia has been still experiencing regional economic disparity problems, including in labour productivity. This study employs dynamic panel approach to analyze convergence and to identify determinants of regional labour productivity during the period of 1987-2011. The System Generalized Method of Moments (Sys-GMM) estimation results show that regional convergence process occurs with speed of convergence of 0.06518 per year. Physical capital stock, human capital stock, total trade, and real wage give positive impacts. Therefore, government should prioritize in overcoming labour productivity disparity in Eastern Indonesia in which are more unequal than in Western Indonesia where interventions should be greater for provinces …

Optimal Placement Of Off-Stream Water Sources For Ephemeral Stream Recovery, Matthew Rigge, Alexander Smart, Bruce Wylie Jul 2013

Optimal Placement Of Off-Stream Water Sources For Ephemeral Stream Recovery, Matthew Rigge, Alexander Smart, Bruce Wylie

Natural Resource Management Faculty Publications

Uneven and/or inefficient livestock distribution is often a product of an inadequate number and distribution of watering points.Placement of off-stream water practices (OSWP) in pastures is a key consideration in rangeland management plans and is criticalto achieving riparian recovery by improving grazing evenness, while improving livestock performance. Effective OSWPplacement also minimizes the impacts of livestock use radiating from OSWP, known as the ‘‘piosphere.’’ The objective of thisstudy was to provide land managers with recommendations for the optimum placement of OSWP. Specifically, we aimed toprovide minimum offset distances of OSWP to streams and assess the effective range of OSWP using Normalized …

Do Open Access Electronic Theses And Dissertations Diminish Publishing Opportunities In The Social Sciences And Humanities? Findings From A 2011 Survey Of Academic Publishers, Marisa Ramirez, Joan T. Dalton, Gail Mcmillan, Max Read, Nancy H. Seamans Jul 2013

Seamans

Library Scholarship

An increasing number of higher education institutions worldwide are requiring submission of electronic theses and dissertations (ETDs) by graduate students and are subsequently providing open access to these works in online repositories. Faculty advisors and graduate students are concerned that such unfettered access to their work could diminish future publishing opportunities. This study investigated social sciences, arts, and humanities journal editors’ and university press directors’ attitudes toward ETDs. The findings indicate that manuscripts that are revisions of openly accessible ETDs are always welcome for submission or considered on a case-by-case basis by 82.8 percent of journal editors and 53.7 percent …

Application Of Gis And Spatial Data Modeling To Archaeology: A Case Study In The American Southwest, Veronica Maria Arias Jul 2013

Application Of Gis And Spatial Data Modeling To Archaeology: A Case Study In The American Southwest, Veronica Maria Arias

Anthropology ETDs

One of the most important methodological advances in the archaeology of the past quarter century is the use of Geographic Information System (GIS) in archaeological research. Within this time frame, GIS has evolved from an emergent geospatial technology with limited mapmaking capabilities to a technology of choice for cultural resource managers, planners, and academic archaeologists alike. This dissertation examines the evolutionary trajectory and impact of GIS in the discipline since its introduction, and its potential to support new applications of GIS-driven innovation in archaeological research. As part of this project, two separate studies were conducted. The first study assessed adoption …

At The Full And Change Of The Moon: The Passing Down Of Cultural Memory In The Black Diaspora, Anh Hua Jul 2013

At The Full And Change Of The Moon: The Passing Down Of Cultural Memory In The Black Diaspora, Anh Hua

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

Referring to the Holocaust, James Young argues that historians mistakenly make a forced distinction between memory and history, where history is defined as that which happened and memory as that which is remembered of what happened. This leaves no room for the survivor’s voice and the survivor’s memory of the events, whose value is lost to the historians. James Young is interested in bridging the gap between a survivor’s “deep memory” and historical narrative, how to remember the past as it passes from living memory to history (276-277). Historical inquiry, for Young, is understood as “the combined study …

The Shape Of Things To Come: Reconceptualizing World History Curriculum For A Global Era, Ryan S. Bates Jul 2013

The Shape Of Things To Come: Reconceptualizing World History Curriculum For A Global Era, Ryan S. Bates

College of Education Theses and Dissertations

This critical and philosophical study explores the relationship between globalization, the evolution of structural education reform policy (i.e., the standards and accountability movement), and the purpose of secondary history/social studies education in American society. From A Nation at Risk to Obama’s A Blueprint for Reform, federal education policy has narrowed the vision of public education in the United States for the past 30 years.

The purpose of this study is three-fold: 1. question the purpose of history/social studies education in light of the effects of globalization on American public education reform; 2. propose a new rationale for world history curriculum …
