Examining Historical (Mis)Representations Of Christopher Columbus Within Children’S Literature, John H. Bickford Jul 2013

Examining Historical (Mis)Representations Of Christopher Columbus Within Children’S Literature, John H. Bickford

Faculty Research and Creative Activity

Effective teaching, while supplemented by best practice methods and assessments, is rooted in accurate, age-appropriate, and engaging content. As a foundation for history content, elementary educators rely strongly on textbooks and children’s literature, both fiction and non-fiction. While many researchers have examined the historical accuracy of textbook content, few have rigorously scrutinized the historical accuracy of children’s literature. Those projects that carried out such examination were more descriptive than comprehensive due to significantly smaller data pools. I investigate how children’s non-fiction and fiction books depict and historicize a meaningful and frequently taught history topic: Christopher Columbus’s accomplishments and misdeeds. Results …

Income Polarization And Income Inequality In Connecticut During The Great Recession, A. E. Rodriguez, Scott J. Lane Jul 2013

Income Polarization And Income Inequality In Connecticut During The Great Recession, A. E. Rodriguez, Scott J. Lane

Economics & Business Analytics Faculty Publications

In this paper, using Bureau of the Census family income data we formally examine the income polarization hypothesis for the State of Connecticut. We ask and answer two questions. First, did the polarization of income deteriorate over the Great Recession years of 2007-2009? If the observed clustering around two opposite poles that existed in Connecticut prior to the Great Recession increased between the years immediately prior to the recession and immediately after (2006-2010) it would be consistent with the perception that the size of the middle class decreased over this period. Second, have income polarization and income inequality fared significantly …

Geography, Informal Information, And Mutual Fund Portfolios, Jinyi (Richard) Fu, Swasti Gupta-Mukherjee Jul 2013

Geography, Informal Information, And Mutual Fund Portfolios, Jinyi (Richard) Fu, Swasti Gupta-Mukherjee

School of Business: Faculty Publications and Other Works

This paper explores how informal information channels impact the investment performance of mutual funds. We measure the strengths of two specific information channels linked to the geographical location of fund managers: information transfers among managers (fund-fund links), and between fund managers and the companies in which they invest (fund-company links). We analyze the marginal impact of these information channels on abnormal returns generated from stock holdings. We find that each channel increases investment performance in the absence of the other. Investment performance is reduced when the two information channels act in combination, an effect that appears to be driven by …

Mass Transit Project Financing - New And Alternative Approaches, Chris A. Hale Jul 2013

Mass Transit Project Financing - New And Alternative Approaches, Chris A. Hale

World Transit Research

In major cities around the world, the appetite for better mass transit systems is strong – with many locations needing to enhance both capacity and coverage to address population growth and increased transport movement. Available resources from traditional government sources are limited, however. In this paper, several potential ‘alternative’ project financing structures will be reviewed – mainly focusing on PPPs – but also briefly taking-in ‘Joint Powers’ and other arrangements operating under a ‘blended’ financing model.

The paper seeks to analyse and clarify the attributes, pitfalls, and potential benefits of these different arrangements, drawing on the documentation and stated aims …

Student Interaction With Content In Online And Hybrid Courses: Leading Horses To The Proverbial Water, Meg Murray, Jorge Perez, Debra Geist, Alison Hedrick Jul 2013

Student Interaction With Content In Online And Hybrid Courses: Leading Horses To The Proverbial Water, Meg Murray, Jorge Perez, Debra Geist, Alison Hedrick

Faculty Articles

Permutations of traditional and online learning are rapidly advancing along a blended continuum, prompting conjecture that learning and e-learning will soon be indistinguishable. As variations of blended learning evolve, educators worldwide must develop better understanding of how effective interaction with course content impacts engagement and learning. This study compares patterns of access to instructional content in online and hybrid courses offered at a regional university in the United States. Frequency counts and access rates were examined for course content in four categories: core materials, direct support, indirect support, and ancillary materials. Observed results were echoed in responses to a survey …

Process Of Definition And Development Of The Haitian-Dominican Borderland, Carolina Bonilla Elvira Jul 2013

Process Of Definition And Development Of The Haitian-Dominican Borderland, Carolina Bonilla Elvira

Latin American Studies ETDs

The borderline that currently divides the island of Hispaniola has undergone a complicated process of definition. Since colonial times, central authorities have claimed the area while contradictorily ignoring the societies that developed in the region. It was not until the first decades of the twentieth century that the two countries were officially divided and a borderline was enforced. The massacre of approximately 15,000 Haitians ordered by the Dominican dictator Rafael Trujillo in 1937 is the event that brought attention to the border nationalization process. In my research I argue that the conflict between the two countries had both an economic …

La Ciudad De La Mujer: Solidaridad Y Resistencia En El Salón De Belleza, Radost A. Rangelova Jul 2013

La Ciudad De La Mujer: Solidaridad Y Resistencia En El Salón De Belleza, Radost A. Rangelova

Spanish Faculty Publications

The paper explores the relationship between gender, sexuality, and the construction of the space of the city in Puerto Rican short stories set in beauty salons. I argue that, through the relationships that develop between women in the beauty salon, and through the interactions between the beauty salon and other city spaces like the street, the strip club, the church and the family house. The protagonists of stories like “Milagros, call Mercurio” and “Pilar, tus rizos” politicize the space of the beauty salon, both gendering and queering it. In this way, they challenge some of the spatial tropes associated with …

Relevance And Key Factors Of “Demand-Side Oriented Market” Analysis To Define Indonesia’S Retail Industry, Sih Yuliana Wahyuningtyas S.H. M.Hum, A.Y. Agung Nugroho, Mm Jul 2013

Relevance And Key Factors Of “Demand-Side Oriented Market” Analysis To Define Indonesia’S Retail Industry, Sih Yuliana Wahyuningtyas S.H. M.Hum, A.Y. Agung Nugroho, Mm

Business Review

The remarkable development of the Indonesia’s retail industry draws attention due to its complexities with regard to the business characteristics and the relation between retailers as well as between retailers and suppliers. This brings competition law into relevance, which one of the fundamental elements for the analysis is the definition of relevant market, in terms of both product and geographical market. The study focuses on the relevance of “demand-side oriented market” analysis with the application of cross shopping approach to define Indonesia’s retail industry taking both the development and formats of retail into consideration. The focal point of this study …

Factors Leading To Decentralization Of Ict Companies: The Case Of Multimedia Super Corridor, Malaysia, Muhammad Asim Tufail, Abu Hassan Abu Bakar, Wiwied Virgiyanti, Faisal Manzoor Arain

Business Review

Technological development in the information and communication technologies (ICT) sector is essential to attain sustainability in today’s era. Cities have developed satellite towns at the periphery with hi-fidelity digital and physical infrastructure which converts a single cantered city into a multi cantered one. In case of Kuala Lumpur Metropolitan Area (KLMA) the shift of civic services to Putrajaya and development of Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC) which offers incentives to local and foreign companies to develop a super block of research and development based economic sector. This development spearheaded the Malaysian Vision 2020 of knowledge based economy and society and has …

Mapping The Boston Poor: Inmates Of The Boston Almshouse, 1795–1801, Ruth Wallis Herndon, Amilcar Challú

History Faculty Publications

This article examines postrevolutionary Boston through evidence about its poorest inhabitants, those admitted to the town’s almshouse from 1795 to 1801. Charts and maps constructed from Boston Almshouse records and geographical data about Boston for these years reveal the characteristics of the Almshouse inmates, as well as their residential location before entering the facility and their mobility after entering it a ªrst time. This study is part of a broader project that applies Geographical Information Systems (gis) to analyze and visualize patterns evinced by the inmates of the Boston Almshouse during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Although the …

Explaining China’S Economic Performance From The Perspective Of Non-Conventional Determinants, Jingjing Yang, Sana Khalil Jul 2013

Explaining China’S Economic Performance From The Perspective Of Non-Conventional Determinants, Jingjing Yang, Sana Khalil

Business Review

We analyze forecasts concerning China’s growth slow-down and future prospects concerning its economic performance. Extending the discussion on China’s possibility of going through a slow-down in future, we focus on the avoidance of such a possibility by drawing forth the role of gross capital formation, trade openness, higher education enrollment ratio, higher education expenditure, R&D expenditure, population growth and number of inventions in determining per capita income. These non-conventional determinants: number of inventions, government R&D expenditure, higher education enrollment ratio and higher education expenditure, show not only significantly positive link with per capita income but also exhibit strong explanatory power …

Identity And Immigration Integration In Western Europe’S ‘New’ Migration Cities: The Cases Of Dublin And Madrid, Elitsa Daneva Molles Jul 2013

Identity And Immigration Integration In Western Europe’S ‘New’ Migration Cities: The Cases Of Dublin And Madrid, Elitsa Daneva Molles

Josef Korbel Journal of Advanced International Studies

As Ireland and Spain transformed into immigration countries in the early 2000s, they attracted comparatively large immigrant populations, especially to their largest cities. Nonetheless, the immigrant communities in Dublin and Madrid differ significantly in their composition, the reaction they have elicited from the host society, and their ability to incorporate in their new environment. This paper explores the factors that influence immigrant reception and integration in new immigration spaces like Dublin and Madrid. While acknowledging the significance of social networks, economic interest, and party politics, it instead focuses on the identity characteristics, both those of the newcomers and their host …

Review Of Janine Barchas, Matters Of Fact In Jane Austen: History, Location, And Celebrity, Laura White Jul 2013

Review Of Janine Barchas, Matters Of Fact In Jane Austen: History, Location, And Celebrity, Laura White

Department of English: Faculty Publications

Janine Barchas’s thought-provoking study of Austen’s naming practices unearths a wealth of historical antecedents for Austen’s characters and posits an Austen whose gamesmanship with the names of persons and places rivals the knowingness and playfulness of James Joyce. In earlier decades, such a highly ambitious and wide-reaching work could not have been accomplished except through protracted antiquarian research. Web scholarship, however, has made it possible for Barchas to uncover in a relatively short time a remarkable array of the many interconnected historical figures bearing such names as Wentworth, Darcy, Vernon, Ferrars, Allen, and Dashwood whose heroic exploits, political machinations, tragic …

Beyond Educational Voyeurism: An Analysis Of A Ugandan-North American Teacher Partnership Program, Philip P. Kelly, Amy Cordileone Jul 2013

Beyond Educational Voyeurism: An Analysis Of A Ugandan-North American Teacher Partnership Program, Philip P. Kelly, Amy Cordileone

Curriculum, Instruction, and Foundational Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

Beyond simply watching teachers in international settings as tourists might, teachers in a Ugandan-North American international teacher partnership program went further, reflecting on the social/political contexts within which they taught. Teachers’ surveys and reflections are analyzed for factors addressing the successful negotiation of both teaching and relationship making across the cultural, pedagogical and political divides that separate them. In the midst of the international teacher partnership program, concerns arose regarding teacher-centered pedagogy and student passivity as after effects of Uganda’s colonial education system.
