At The Full And Change Of The Moon: The Passing Down Of Cultural Memory In The Black Diaspora, Anh Hua Jul 2013

At The Full And Change Of The Moon: The Passing Down Of Cultural Memory In The Black Diaspora, Anh Hua

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

Referring to the Holocaust, James Young argues that historians mistakenly make a forced distinction between memory and history, where history is defined as that which happened and memory as that which is remembered of what happened. This leaves no room for the survivor’s voice and the survivor’s memory of the events, whose value is lost to the historians. James Young is interested in bridging the gap between a survivor’s “deep memory” and historical narrative, how to remember the past as it passes from living memory to history (276-277). Historical inquiry, for Young, is understood as “the combined study …

The Shape Of Things To Come: Reconceptualizing World History Curriculum For A Global Era, Ryan S. Bates Jul 2013

The Shape Of Things To Come: Reconceptualizing World History Curriculum For A Global Era, Ryan S. Bates

College of Education Theses and Dissertations

This critical and philosophical study explores the relationship between globalization, the evolution of structural education reform policy (i.e., the standards and accountability movement), and the purpose of secondary history/social studies education in American society. From A Nation at Risk to Obama’s A Blueprint for Reform, federal education policy has narrowed the vision of public education in the United States for the past 30 years.

The purpose of this study is three-fold: 1. question the purpose of history/social studies education in light of the effects of globalization on American public education reform; 2. propose a new rationale for world history curriculum …

Communication Technology And Public Participation In Urban Planning: Who Is Speaking Up In Austin And Who Is Listening?, Amos Stoltzfus Jul 2013

Communication Technology And Public Participation In Urban Planning: Who Is Speaking Up In Austin And Who Is Listening?, Amos Stoltzfus

Architecture and Planning ETDs

Public participation has enjoyed a long, if embattled, history in the field of urban planning in the U.S. Although mandated by federal, state and local regulations, designing processes for meaningful public participation has proven difficult for both practical and political reasons. Recognizing the inadequacies of traditional participation methods – particularly in strengthening democracy, valuing local knowledge and pursuing social justice - many planning practitioners and participation theorists held high aspirations for the potential of communication technology in the networked world of Web 2.0 to transform the role of the public in improving the quality of urban environments. Although research in …

State Incentives For Innovation, Star Scientists, And Jobs: Evidence From Biotech, Enrico Moretti, Daniel J. Wilson Jul 2013

State Incentives For Innovation, Star Scientists, And Jobs: Evidence From Biotech, Enrico Moretti, Daniel J. Wilson

Upjohn Institute Working Papers

We evaluate the effects of state-provided financial incentives for biotech companies, which are part of a growing trend of placed-based policies designed to spur innovation clusters. We estimate that the adoption of subsidies for biotech employers by a state raises the number of star biotech scientists in that state by about 15 percent over a three-year period. A 10 percent decline in the user cost of capital induced by an increase in R&D tax incentives raises the number of stars by 22 percent. Most of the gains are due to the relocation of star scientists to adopting states, with limited …

School Project: Determining The Predominant Learning Style From The Vak Learning Styles Model In Ks2 To Enhance Environmental Education, Connie Land Jul 2013

School Project: Determining The Predominant Learning Style From The Vak Learning Styles Model In Ks2 To Enhance Environmental Education, Connie Land

The Plymouth Student Scientist

There is a need to improve the delivery of environmental education as it struggles to establish itself within the curriculum, it would be more beneficial if environmental issues were to become embedded in the whole curriculum rather than currently being confined to science/geography. Environmental issues such as climate change means that it is imperative that young children are effectively educated in order to develop a more ecocentric viewpoint of the world. The aim of this research was to investigate if there was a predominant learning style from the VAK (visual, auditory and kinaesthetic) model that is most effective for the …

The Effect Of Induced Incidental Disgust On Attitudes Towards Physical Disabilities: Does Intergroup Disgust Sensitivity Moderate?, Elaine Squires Jul 2013

The Effect Of Induced Incidental Disgust On Attitudes Towards Physical Disabilities: Does Intergroup Disgust Sensitivity Moderate?, Elaine Squires

The Plymouth Student Scientist

The present study investigated whether induced incidental disgust affected attitudes towards individuals with physical disabilities and whether intergroup disgust sensitivity (ITG-DS) would moderate this effect. Thirty seven participants were randomly assigned to either the induced disgust or control condition. They completed two measures: ITG-DS scale and an attitudes scale. As expected, manipulation of disgust was successful (p < .001). The pattern of means was in the predicted direction. Those who were induced to disgust (vs. control) reported more negative attitudes; as did those with greater ITG-DS (vs. lower ITG-DS). Those induced to disgust and greater ITG-DS reported more negative attitudes (vs. control and lower ITG-DS); suggesting an interaction. This extends the findings of incidental emotions and prejudice.

A Critical Evaluation Of The Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum: An Example Of Things To Come?, Philip Martin, Stephen Grimes, Hayley Manners, Malcolm Hart Jul 2013

A Critical Evaluation Of The Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum: An Example Of Things To Come?, Philip Martin, Stephen Grimes, Hayley Manners, Malcolm Hart

The Plymouth Student Scientist

The Paleocene–Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM), arguably the most dramatic hyperthermal event recorded to date, occurred approximately 55 million years ago (Ma). During this event thousands of petagrams of carbon were released into the atmosphere and hydrosphere affecting the climate, ocean chemistry and marine and terrestrial ecosystems. With a duration of approximately 100,000 years (though possibly as long as 170,000 years) and global temperature increases of between 4- 8°C, terrestrial and marine faunal turnover occurred including mammalian dispersal, rapid evolutionary and ecological change and transient diversification. The PETM, therefore, offers a valuable insight into shifts in the climate regime and the …

A Study Evaluating What Best Inspires Visitor Behaviour And Attitude Changes In Zoos, With A Small Botanical Garden Comparison: Addressing Zoos' Educational And Subsequent Conservation Values, Sophie Lancaster Jul 2013

A Study Evaluating What Best Inspires Visitor Behaviour And Attitude Changes In Zoos, With A Small Botanical Garden Comparison: Addressing Zoos' Educational And Subsequent Conservation Values, Sophie Lancaster

The Plymouth Student Scientist

The planet is currently under intense stress, though unsustainable consumption carries on rising at an exponential rate. One explanation for this is ignorance, especially within developed nations. Governments and industry are under extensive pressure to increase awareness, if we are to achieve a sustainable future and prevent the loss of the natural world. Zoos with their high visitation numbers have a significant role to play in educating the public, which they declare as a main goal. This study focuses on how zoos can better achieve this educational and subsequent conservation goal by looking into what learning techniques at Dartmoor Zoo …

The Complexity Of Armed Conflict In Mindanao: Beyond Economic Deprivation, Discrimination, And Inequality, Nasser Pendatun Lidasan Jul 2013

The Complexity Of Armed Conflict In Mindanao: Beyond Economic Deprivation, Discrimination, And Inequality, Nasser Pendatun Lidasan

Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations

Studies on internal conflict focus on bringing a violent conflict to non-violent. Economic development and good governance are most attractive since essential services are provided to people, regardless of ethnic affiliation. Autonomy for minority groups to maintain the integrity of a state is another option. Applied in Mindanao conflict, negotiated settlement, separation, and military victory did not create a lasting peace. This study applies the levels of analysis framework to investigate the conflict and considers the sub-state level as vital. It suggests the role of local actors as crucial in intrastate conflict. It examines the dynamics of conflict at the …

The Transformation Of The Pkk (Kurdistan Workers' Party): Exploring Domestic, Regional, And Global Dynamics, Akin Guneri Jul 2013

The Transformation Of The Pkk (Kurdistan Workers' Party): Exploring Domestic, Regional, And Global Dynamics, Akin Guneri

Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations

The main purpose of this study is to explore the underlying factors behind the political and ideological transformation of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) since its foundation. Through the detailed analysis of the role of Turkey's internal versus external factors on the evolution of the PKK over time, this work finds that changing political developments in the Middle East were more influential than Turkey's shifting domestic political environment. Hypothesis testing revealed that the 1991 Gulf War, 2003 Iraq War, changing political dynamics of the Middle East following Syria's Arab Spring, and policy changes worldwide implemented after the 9/11 terrorist attacks …

Security Here Is Not Safe': Violence, Punishment, & Space In The Contemporary U.S. Penitentiary, Karen M. Morin Jul 2013

Security Here Is Not Safe': Violence, Punishment, & Space In The Contemporary U.S. Penitentiary, Karen M. Morin

Faculty Journal Articles

The US penitentiary at Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, was retrofitted in 2008 to offer the country’s first federal Special Management Unit (SMU) program of its kind. This model SMU is designed for federal inmates from around the country identified as the most intractably troublesome, and features double-celling of inmates in tiny spaces, in 23-hour or 24-hour a day lockdown, requiring them to pass through a two-year program of readjustment. These spatial tactics, and the philosophy of punishment underlying them, contrast with the modern reform ideals upon which the prison was designed and built in 1932. The SMU represents the latest punitive phase …

Older Adolescents’ Self-Determined Motivations To Disclose Their Hiv Status, Ann Gillard, Mark F. Roark Jul 2013

Older Adolescents’ Self-Determined Motivations To Disclose Their Hiv Status, Ann Gillard, Mark F. Roark

Kinesiology and Health Science Faculty Publications

Disclosure of HIV status is an important topic for youth living with HIV/AIDS, yet theoretical frameworks for understanding HIV disclosure motivations have been poorly applied. Self-determination theory (SDT) proposes that people are at optimal functioning when they are engaging in activities that are interesting and enlivening. This study utilized SDT to understand young adults’ motivations to disclose their HIV status. Interviews and observations were conducted with nine youth aged 17–19 and two adult staff. Results indicate that SDT is useful for understanding types of motivation (i.e., amotivation, controlled, and autonomous motivation) to disclose. Amotivation was the most common type of …

Mobile Phones And Growth Of Microenterprises: A Case Study Of Safaricom’S “Zidisha Biashara” Customers, Geoffrey Wandeto Mwangi, Freddie R. Acosta

DLSU Business & Economics Review

The study aimed at establishing the impacts of mobile phones usage on the growth of microenterprises. The study focused on mobile phones (and not telephony or telecommunications in general) because of the speedy adoption and widespread usage of mobile phones witnessed in Kenya over the last 10 years. The objectives of the study were based on three indicators of business growth, that is, income, profitability (cost management), and customer base. The study adopted a descriptive design method since it aimed at discovering and describing if a relationship exists between the variables. The study purposively sampled 100 microenterprises from Safaricom’s Zidisha …

Geomorphia: Did The Earth Move For You? Mobile Capital As Geomorphic Agent, Kane Faucher Jul 2013

Geomorphia: Did The Earth Move For You? Mobile Capital As Geomorphic Agent, Kane Faucher

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

Mobilization strategies, be them of a geomorphic quality or with respect to labour, are imbued by an endocolonizing rhetoric supplied by a neoliberal discourse which relies on “state of nature” claims as the foundation upon which it can reconfigure the terms of economy, generally by what Deleuze and Guattari call “axiomatization.” These, in turn, shape a new model of labour relations that may be tied to a new relationship to the earth itself as mobile commodity. By appealing to the works of Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari, this article will attempt to provide a different insight by which …

Banking Crises And The Volume Of Trade, Yifei Mu Jul 2013

Banking Crises And The Volume Of Trade, Yifei Mu

All Dissertations

This dissertation consists of three chapters. The first two chapters investigate the correlation between banking crises and bilateral trade flows. In the first chapter, we focus on how banking crises may impact the bilateral trade flows over time. We attempt to disentangle the financial shocks' impacts on trade flow by factors that are related to exporters and importers. The second chapter assesses how banking crises impact the extensive and intensive margin of the trade. The third chapter attempts to use frontier model to analyze the bidding behaviors and collusion in the different submarkets of low-price, sealed-bid construction procurement.
Since 2007 …

Effect Of Lactose Monolaurate And High Intensity Ultrasound On Crystallization Behavior Of Anydrous Milk Fat, Ashwini Wagh, M. K. Walsh, Silvana Martini

Nutrition, Dietetics, and Food Sciences Faculty Publications

Crystallization behavior of anhydrous milk fat (AMF) was studied with the addition of 0.025 and 0.05 % lactose monolaurate (LML). The crystallization behavior was studied at low (ΔT = 3 °C) and high supercooling (ΔT = 6 °C). Polarized light microscopy and laser turbidimetry indicated a delay in crystallization on addition of 0.025 % and 0.05 % LML or Tween 20 to AMF. High intensity ultrasound (HIU) was applied to AMF samples with 0.05 % LML and lower supercooling (T c = 31 °C; ΔT = 3 °C). HIU application in AMF and AMF + 0.05 % LML induced crystallization …

The Evolution Of The Modern Corporation: Corporate Governance Reform In Context, Charles O'Kelley Jul 2013

The Evolution Of The Modern Corporation: Corporate Governance Reform In Context, Charles O'Kelley

Faculty Articles

This article traces the evolution of the modern corporation from the American Civil War to the present. Professor O’Kelley begins with a focus on the period from 1865 to the Great Depression. This was the era of the Great Tycoon, the time of the second industrial revolution and the transformation of America’s economy from small proprietorships and partnerships to the forerunner of the modern corporation. Professor O’Kelley then details the transformational crisis of the Great Depression and Adolf Berle’s central role in shaping America’s changed understanding of the proper relationship between government and the modern corporation. It was Berle, both …

Translingual Literacy, Language Difference, And Matters Of Agency., Min-Zhan Lu, Bruce Horner Jul 2013

Translingual Literacy, Language Difference, And Matters Of Agency., Min-Zhan Lu, Bruce Horner

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

We argue that composition scholarship’s defenses of language differences in student writing reinforce dominant ideology’s spatial framework conceiving language difference as deviation from a norm of sameness. We argue instead for adopting a temporal-spatial framework defining difference as the norm of utterances, and defining languages, literacy practices, conventions, and contexts as always emergent, ongoing products of iterations, and thus manifestations of writer agency. Using the “White Shoes” essay from David Bartholomae’s “Inventing the University,” we show how such a framework addresses the writer’s agency iterating the “same,” and how it resolves concerns to meet students’ need and right to learn …

Alcohol And Violence In A Nonmetropolitan College Town: Alcohol Outlet Density, Outlet Type, And Assault, Aleksandra J. Snowden, William Alex Pridemore Jul 2013

Alcohol And Violence In A Nonmetropolitan College Town: Alcohol Outlet Density, Outlet Type, And Assault, Aleksandra J. Snowden, William Alex Pridemore

Social and Cultural Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

This study examined the association between alcohol outlet density and violence in a nonmetropolitan college town. Nearly all prior empirical research examining this association has been undertaken in large urban cities. Using data on Bloomington, Indiana, block groups, we estimated ordinary least squared and spatially lagged regression models to determine whether alcohol outlet density was associated with assault density, and we also took into account the seriousness of violence (i.e., simple and aggravated assault) and different alcohol outlet types (i.e., off-premise, restaurants, and bars). The results showed that total alcohol outlet density was significantly associated with both simple and aggravated …

The Role Of Suburbia In The Attribution Of Greenhouse Gas Emissions, Jochen Albrecht, Peter Marcotullio, Andrea Sarzynski, Niels Schulz Jul 2013

The Role Of Suburbia In The Attribution Of Greenhouse Gas Emissions, Jochen Albrecht, Peter Marcotullio, Andrea Sarzynski, Niels Schulz

Publications and Research

The original goal of the research presented here was to quantify by world region, the contribution of urbanized areas to global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions (EDGAR, 2011). Regressions on population density and growth rate, GDP, and heating/cooling degree days, as well as a row of other non-significant variables, show that the contribution of urban extents is between 38% and 49% of total emissions (Marcotullio et al., 2012). In spite of using very liberal definitions of urban extents (GRUMP, 2011) this is at the low end of academic estimates (Satterthwaite, 2008; WEO, 2008; Dhakal, 2010). It is no surprise that the …

When A Subsidiary Loses Its Status: Towards An Identification-Based Model Of Host Country Nationals' Willingness To Share Knowledge With Expatriates, Sachiko Yamao, Toru Yoshikawa

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

We theorize how a foreign subsidiary’s loss of its status relative to other units of the same multinational corporation (MNC) will influence host country national (HCN) managers’ dual organizational identification and their willingness to share knowledge with expatriate managers. In particular, we examine the two contingent scenarios of subsidiary status loss (i.e., the parent-driven and subsidiary-engaged) that may lead HCN managers to develop different organizational identification (i.e., MNC-oriented and subsidiary-oriented). We then propose that different organizational identification of HCN managers will lead them to develop varying levels of willingness to share knowledge with expatriates. We further propose that HCN managers’ …

A Faith Dimension On The Landscape Of Teachers: Muslim Teachers On Recruitment, Retention And Career Advancement, Imran Mogra Jul 2013

A Faith Dimension On The Landscape Of Teachers: Muslim Teachers On Recruitment, Retention And Career Advancement, Imran Mogra

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

A significant area of teacher education is the increasing focus in many countries on how faith and schooling should best be understood. Yet, understanding faith perspectives in the lives and careers of teachers appears to be an under-researched area. To this end, the experiences of professional Muslim teachers in state primary schools in England were explored using semi-structured in-depth life history interviews. This paper focuses on their views regarding the recruitment, retention and career advancement of Muslim teachers in particular, as part of Black and minority ethnic teachers in Britain. Findings reveal a positive picture and their representation at various …
