Exploring The Emerging Economy Context: Smes And Social Capital In Brazil, Ruth Clarke, Ramdas Chandra, Marcilio Machado Jul 2013

Exploring The Emerging Economy Context: Smes And Social Capital In Brazil, Ruth Clarke, Ramdas Chandra, Marcilio Machado

HCBE Faculty Presentations

This exploratory, empirical study reports on social capital in a commodity-based industry in an emerging market context. We examine whether Brazilian entrepreneurs and SMEs in the Stone industry experience contextual normative pressure sufficient to retard or promote the growth of social capital. Further we link social capital development to internationalization and performance. We find that there is a lack of social capital development and propose that this is related to the country context of Brazil and the stage of development along the industry value chain. We begin to answer the question, essentially, are the benefits of social capital universally implementable …

Geographical Concentration Of Manufacturing Industries In China —Measurements And Determinants, Zhiqiang Liu Jul 2013

Geographical Concentration Of Manufacturing Industries In China —Measurements And Determinants, Zhiqiang Liu

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation uses China's Industrial Survey data to explore the degrees and causes of geographical concentration of China's manufacturing industries. The combination indices provide a more sophisticated framework in measuring degree of manufacturing concentration. In addition, determinants of manufacturing concentration are also explored by a series of econometric models. The results show state capital and state subsidies all have significant impact on geographical concentrations of China's manufacturing activities.

Hydrogeologic Characterization Of Dutch Canyon, Scappoose, Oregon, Derrick Lee Wagner Jul 2013

Hydrogeologic Characterization Of Dutch Canyon, Scappoose, Oregon, Derrick Lee Wagner

Dissertations and Theses

Dutch Canyon is located directly west of the City of Scappoose in Columbia County Oregon. This area is proximate to Highway 30, a major access corridor to downtown Portland, and is experiencing a population increase, which is expected to continue and likely accelerate. As a result, there is growing pressure on water resources. Individual and community efforts to utilize groundwater resources have been hampered by generally poor groundwater yields and water quality concerns outside of the Columbia River corridor and a lack of published hydrogeologic information for the region.

The intent of this study is to identify the water-bearing units …

No Place For Middlemen: Civic Culture, Downtown Environment, And The Carroll Public Market During The Modernization Of Portland, Oregon, James Richard Louderman Jul 2013

No Place For Middlemen: Civic Culture, Downtown Environment, And The Carroll Public Market During The Modernization Of Portland, Oregon, James Richard Louderman

Dissertations and Theses

Following the Civil War, the American government greatly expanded the opportunities available for private businessmen and investors in an effort to rapidly colonize the West. This expansion of private commerce led to the second industrial revolution in which railroads and the corporation became the symbols and tools of a rapidly modernizing nation. It was also during this period that the responsibility of food distribution was released from municipal accountability and institutions like public markets began to fade from the American urbanscape. While the proliferation of private grocers greatly aided many metropolises' rapid growth, they did little to secure a sustainable …

Acts 17: Paul Before The Areopagus, Michael R. Preece Jul 2013

Acts 17: Paul Before The Areopagus, Michael R. Preece

Theses and Dissertations

Luke's record of Paul in Athens is among the most interesting and widely studied topics in the life of the Apostle Paul. Luke recorded that Paul taught in the Athenian marketplace, where he was asked to present his doctrines before the Areopagus. Many have commented on the controversial aspects of Paul's speech before the council as recounted by Luke. Much of this scholarly commentary has been centered on the speech itself and the historical authenticity of the account. The purpose of this thesis is to reexamine the context and the setting of the speech as recorded by Luke in the …

A Rural Tobacco Smoke Pollution Study, Kelly Buettner-Schmidt Jul 2013

A Rural Tobacco Smoke Pollution Study, Kelly Buettner-Schmidt

Nursing ETDs

The purpose of this study was to determine whether the location of hospitality venues considering; rurality, presence of local ordinances, and socioeconomic status, influenced the quantity of tobacco smoke pollution in a predominantly rural state. The study built on current scientific literature in four aspects. First, it was the first U.S. statewide study on tobacco smoke pollution levels in hospitality venues. Second, it quantified indoor tobacco smoke pollution specifically in rural areas. Third, it used random sampling, a method rarely used in studying indoor tobacco smoke pollution. Fourth, it analyzed tobacco smoke exposure as a function of socioeconomic status. A …

Humanitarianism And The Anthropology Of Hunger, Kate Klein Jul 2013

Humanitarianism And The Anthropology Of Hunger, Kate Klein

Undergraduate Theses—Unrestricted

While the early view of hunger as the product of a world population too large to sustain has largely been eliminated, and the mainstream international community has come to accept that food insecurity results from issues of distribution rather than an insufficient global food supply, the emphasis on biotechnology in agriculture, humanitarianism in international aid, and social justice in international human rights law in the contemporary era has contributed to other barriers that prevent hunger alleviation.

In this thesis, I argue that these previous contemporary developments have had the capacity to hide hunger. My analysis of technology and humanitarian aid …

Civil War Simulation Games, Daniel Brown Jul 2013

Civil War Simulation Games, Daniel Brown

The Review: A Journal of Undergraduate Student Research

"In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.

To allow a student to better understand the way a battle develops into either a victory or a loss, simulation games are often used. In fact, the military academies usually use them as tools in the classroom to aid in the instruction of tactics and battlefield theory, as these games provide a dimension of involvement that mere lecture cannot duplicate. One such system, the Blue & Gray series published by Simulations Publications, allows for such objectives to be met. With generally accurate geography and terrain, and easy to learn …

Financial Literacy And Household Savings In Romania, Elisabeth Beckmann Jul 2013

Financial Literacy And Household Savings In Romania, Elisabeth Beckmann

Numeracy

We present new evidence from the Euro Survey of the Austrian Central Bank on the level of financial literacy in Romania and analyze how financial literacy is related to household savings. Less than 5% of respondents were able to correctly answer the three “core” financial literacy questions on interest compounding, inflation, and risk diversification, with the risk diversification question posing the greatest difficulties. Twenty percent of respondents are able to answer both the interest compounding and inflation questions correctly. Financial literacy levels differ between regions and across rural and urban areas. Older and less-educated individuals perform worst on the financial …

The Geography Of Financial Literacy, Christopher Bumcrot, Judy Lin, Annamaria Lusardi Jul 2013

The Geography Of Financial Literacy, Christopher Bumcrot, Judy Lin, Annamaria Lusardi

Numeracy

This paper explores how well equipped today’s households are to make complex financial decisions in the face of often high-cost and high-risk financial instruments. Specifically we focus on financial literacy. Most importantly, we describe the geography of financial literacy, i.e., how financial literacy is distributed across the fifty US states. We describe the correlation of financial literacy and some important aggregate variables, such as state-level poverty rates. Finally, we examine the extent to which differences in financial literacy can be explained by states’ demographic and economic characteristics. To assess financial literacy, five questions were added to the 2009 National Financial …

Financial Literacy And Quantitative Reasoning In The High School And College Classroom, Annamaria Lusardi, Dorothy Wallace Jul 2013

Financial Literacy And Quantitative Reasoning In The High School And College Classroom, Annamaria Lusardi, Dorothy Wallace

Numeracy

This overview frames the eight articles devoted to financial literacy in this issue of Numeracy. The survey questions used to assess financial literacy in the United States, Romania, France, Switzerland, Australia, and elsewhere include mathematics that is routinely covered in mathematics and quantitative reasoning courses. Financial literacy, wherever it is received, appears to benefit people throughout their lives. The close tie between quantitative and financial literacy may be exploited to introduce more of both into the high school and undergraduate curriculum.

Best Practice Use To Address Tobacco-Related Disparities By California Community Coalitions, Rodney K. Mccurdy Jul 2013

Best Practice Use To Address Tobacco-Related Disparities By California Community Coalitions, Rodney K. Mccurdy

Frontiers in Public Health Services and Systems Research

Tobacco-related disparities (TRDs) are a major public health concern. This study surveyed community tobacco coalition project directors in California to determine the usage of 11 CDC-published best practices to address TRDs. Response rate was 80 percent. Communities had implemented, on average, one-half of the 11 practices surveyed. Differences were observed between rankings for best practice implementation and perceived level of importance in addressing TRDs in the community. Resource constraints and community context were the highest reported barriers to best practice use. Study findings could assist tobacco program officials and local coalitions in addressing TRDs in their communities.

Racial Disparities In The Use Of Cardiac Revascularization: Does Local Hospital Capacity Matter?, Suhui Li, Arnold Chen, Katherine H. Mead

Health Policy and Management Faculty Publications

Objective: To assess the extent to which the observed racial disparities in cardiac revascularization use can be explained by the variation across counties where patients live, and how the within-county racial disparities is associated with the local hospital capacity.

Data Sources: Administrative data from Pennsylvania Health Care Cost Containment Council (PHC4) between 1995 and 2006.

Study Design: The study sample included 207,570 Medicare patients admitted to hospital for acute myocardial infarction (AMI). We identified the use of coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) and percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) procedures within three months after the patient’s initial admission for AMI. Multi-level hierarchical …
