The State Of Play In Poland”S Unconventional Shale And Oil Development, J Wesley Burnett, Randall Jackson, Robert Blobaum Aug 2013

The State Of Play In Poland”S Unconventional Shale And Oil Development, J Wesley Burnett, Randall Jackson, Robert Blobaum

Regional Research Institute Working Papers

Following the huge gas and oil rush in the US, the world”s gas and oil companies have been eyeing reserves in other countries including Poland, which is believed to be sitting on one of the largest reserves in the European Union. The Poles, seeking to diversify their energy sources and meet EU emissions standards, which are driving up electricity costs, met the news with tremendous fanfare. Following initial geological assessments, major international oil and gas companies soon made announcements to begin drilling operations in Poland. However, one of the major challenges of shale gas development is that is often requires …

The Use Of Coincident Synthetic Aperture Radar And Visible Imagery To Aid In The Analysis Of Photon-Counting Lidar Data Sets Over Complex Ice/Snow Surfaces, Kimberly H. Horan Aug 2013

The Use Of Coincident Synthetic Aperture Radar And Visible Imagery To Aid In The Analysis Of Photon-Counting Lidar Data Sets Over Complex Ice/Snow Surfaces, Kimberly H. Horan

Theses

Qualitative and quantitative analysis of multi-sensor data is becoming increasingly useful as a method of improving our understanding of complex environments, and can be an effective tool in the arsenal to help climate scientists to predict sea level rise due to change in the mass balance of large glaciers in the Arctic and Antarctic. A novel approach to remote sensing of the continuously changing polar environment involves the use of coincident RADARSAT-2 synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery and Landsat 7 visible/near-infrared imagery, combined with digital elevation models (DEM) developed from Multiple Altimeter Beam Experimental Lidar (MABEL) data sets.

MABEL is …

Climate Change Impacts On Streamflow And Subbasin- Scale Hydrology In The Upper Colorado River Basin, Darren L. Ficklin, Edwin P. Maurer, Iris T. Stewert Aug 2013

Climate Change Impacts On Streamflow And Subbasin- Scale Hydrology In The Upper Colorado River Basin, Darren L. Ficklin, Edwin P. Maurer, Iris T. Stewert

Civil, Environmental and Sustainable Engineering

In the Upper Colorado River Basin (UCRB), the principal source of water in the southwestern U.S., demand exceeds supply in most years, and will likely continue to rise. While General Circulation Models (GCMs) project surface temperature warming by 3.5 to 5.6uC for the area, precipitation projections are variable, with no wetter or drier consensus. We assess the impacts of projected 21st century climatic changes on subbasins in the UCRB using the Soil and Water Assessment Tool, for all hydrologic components (snowmelt, evapotranspiration, surface runoff, subsurface runoff, and streamflow), and for 16 GCMs under the A2 emission scenario. Over the GCM …

The Affordable Care Act: What's Next For Maine?, Trish Riley

Population Health & Health Policy

On January 1, 2014 major provisions of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) take effect - including requirements that everyone has health insurance coverage and the availability of new subsidies and insurance reforms that are designed to make that coverage affordable.

Most Americans will continue to get their health insurance through their workplaces. Individuals and small businesses (those with fewer than fifty employees)1 will be able to shop for coverage through a new, online Marketplace, also called an Exchange. The Marketplace will provide one-stop shopping for health insurance with simplified information available to help compare the costs and benefits of …

Cameroon Deaf Empowerment Organisation: Reflections On An International Service-Learning Capstone, Te'aira Tucker Aug 2013

Cameroon Deaf Empowerment Organisation: Reflections On An International Service-Learning Capstone, Te'aira Tucker

Undergraduate University Honors Capstones

Te’aira Tucker’s capstone is a reflection based upon her experience working on a service learning project in Cameroon, West Africa. As part of her service-learning project, she conducted an internship with a deaf organization, the Cameroon Deaf Empowerment Organisation (CDEO), partnering with this organization through Dr. Berdichevsky’s International Deaf Partnerships (IDP) program. Te’aira went to Cameroon during the summer of 2012 initially to work on an HIV/AIDS education campaign focusing on deaf Cameroonian women. However, upon arriving, she learned that this initiative was not needed, and therefore, she turned instead to a different and pressing need associated with the CDEO …

James Hogg, Fyodor Dostoevsky, And Romantic Anachronism, Heather Ann Stewart Aug 2013

James Hogg, Fyodor Dostoevsky, And Romantic Anachronism, Heather Ann Stewart

English

This thesis explores the problematic nature of the term "Romanticism" as traditionally dictated by national and temporal constraints. Most scholars and literary institutions (i.e., anthologies) define Romanticism as a solely European phenomenon of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. This definition, intentionally or not, serves an elitist function in assuming that only Europeans of a specific era were capable of producing texts with Romantic qualities. Further, even authors who fall into this temporal and nationalistic category are often excluded due to their social class. This thesis seeks to extend the boundaries of Romanticism through examining two authors who, despite some recent …

Integrating Climate Change With Human Land Use Patterns: Archaeology Of Butte Lake Northeast, Michael L. Wendt Aug 2013

Integrating Climate Change With Human Land Use Patterns: Archaeology Of Butte Lake Northeast, Michael L. Wendt

Anthropology

This research explores the effects of climate change throughout the Holocene by investigating a multi-component site at Butte Lake, Alaska. This research combines expectations generated from ethnographic models to evaluate site use conditioned by environmental constraints within the theoretical framework of human behavioral ecology. Analysis of lithic materials, faunal remains, and site structure are evaluated to determine site type by occupational component. The results of this research show that a period of low effective moisture during the early Holocene (9000 to 5000 cal BP), as well as a period of both low temperature and increased effective moisture associated with the …

Hydrogeological Assessment For A Suitable Location Of A Reservoir Lake In George County, Mississippi, Corey T (Cory Tanner) Ladner Aug 2013

Hydrogeological Assessment For A Suitable Location Of A Reservoir Lake In George County, Mississippi, Corey T (Cory Tanner) Ladner

Theses and Dissertations

The construction of a reservoir lake was proposed in 2010 for George County, Mississippi, USA. The proposed reservoir would be designed to serve primarily for industrial water storage. As the preliminary portion of the reservoir project, a baseline watershed assessment was performed for the purpose of identifying a reservoir site with potential to fill a lake volume capable of providing a sufficient water supply to prevent the Pascagoula River near Graham Ferry, Mississippi from dropping below a measured 7Q10 base flow when 100 million gallons of water per day are withdrawn from the river for industrial use. The initial focus …

Changes In Host Use By Unionid Mussels Following River Channelization And Impoundment, Lee Gray Turnage Aug 2013

Changes In Host Use By Unionid Mussels Following River Channelization And Impoundment, Lee Gray Turnage

Theses and Dissertations

More than half the North American freshwater mussel species in the family Unionidae (unionids) are imperiled or extinct. Alteration of rivers is considered a major contributor to unionid population declines. Losses could occur through disruption of the reproductive cycle. Unionid reproduction requires attachment of larva (glochidia) to host fishes; therefore, changes in the host fish community could alter the reproductive potential in unionid communities. There have been few attempts to compare reproductive success before and after alteration. I examined the pattern of glochidia use on two common host fishes, Lepomis megalotis and Cyprinella venusta, before and after alteration of the …

Two Essays In Economic Education, Brent A (Brent Andrew) Evans Aug 2013

Two Essays In Economic Education, Brent A (Brent Andrew) Evans

Theses and Dissertations

Prior researchers (Anderson et al. 1994; Ballard & Johnson 2004; Hoag & Benedict 2010) have shown that different math abilities do not equally correlate with success in economics, yet no research has specifically compared algebra and geometry skills as predictors of economics success. In the first essay, I find that students’ standardized geometry scores are a much greater predictor of success in economics than standardized algebra test scores. The study uses a rich data set that includes all Georgia public high school students who took a mandatory economics course in 2006, 2007, or 2008. Results from this study provide supporting …

Sticks, Stones, And Broken Bones: Osteological Analysis Of Human Skeletal Remains From The Bluff Creek Site 1lu59, Roger Taft Alford Aug 2013

Sticks, Stones, And Broken Bones: Osteological Analysis Of Human Skeletal Remains From The Bluff Creek Site 1lu59, Roger Taft Alford

Theses and Dissertations

Remains from twentyour human burials recovered from the Bluff Creek Site (1LU59) in Alabama exhibited evidence of interpersonal conflict trauma. When the victims of interpersonal conflict were placed in their approximate time period, it became apparent that frequencies of interpersonal conflict changed over time, from the Archaic (15.4%) to Woodland (6.7%) to Mississippian (45.5%) periods. These changes are explained by changes in settlement patterns and associated stress over resource competition. As Archaic hunter-gatherers became less mobile and settled in to small “hamlets”, the stress over competition for resources was reduced, causing the frequency of interpersonal conflict trauma to fall slightly …

Geographic Analysis Of Tornadogenesis From Landfalling And Nearby Tropical Cyclones In The State Of Florida, Charles Eugene Roop Aug 2013

Geographic Analysis Of Tornadogenesis From Landfalling And Nearby Tropical Cyclones In The State Of Florida, Charles Eugene Roop

Theses and Dissertations

Tropical cyclone (TC)-spawned tornadoes in Florida were analyzed to determine patterns of occurrence based on storm and geographic features. Tornadoes were determined to be associated with a landfalling or nearby TC if a tornado occurred within 800 km of the TC’s center of circulation. TC-tornadoes were analyzed for patterns based on distance and angle from TC’s center, topographic influences, population biases, and influence based on time of landfall. Most TC-Tornadoes tend to occur more often before landfall than after. It was discovered that tornadoes have occurred in different areas with respect to the bearing from the center depending on the …

Assessing The Equity Of Transit Supply Distribution In Metropolitan Areas Using Lorenz Curves And Gini Coefficients, Kelly L. Bertolaccini Aug 2013

Assessing The Equity Of Transit Supply Distribution In Metropolitan Areas Using Lorenz Curves And Gini Coefficients, Kelly L. Bertolaccini

Master's Theses

The equitable distribution of transit services is a major concern of transportation planners and policymakers worldwide. In the US, planners are required by law to consider equity concerns when investing in new transportation infrastructure and services. However, equity can be difficult to assess in a consistent, objective, and quantitative way. Australian researchers recently developed a single, system wide measure which reflects the horizontal (or spatial) equity of transit service distribution in a metropolitan area. This measure, a variation of the Gini coefficient, specifically measures how well transit supply meets transit demand. While using a single measure to assess the equity …

Modeling The Distribution Of Bobcats And Areas Of Reintroduction For Fisher In The Southern Washington Cascades, Shiloh Michael Halsey Aug 2013

Modeling The Distribution Of Bobcats And Areas Of Reintroduction For Fisher In The Southern Washington Cascades, Shiloh Michael Halsey

Dissertations and Theses

The fisher (Martes pennanti) is a medium sized member of the mustelid family that once roamed the forests of Washington and whose historic range in the western United States once spread throughout the northern Rocky Mountains, the Cascade and Coast Ranges, and the Sierra Nevada (Carroll, Zielinski, and Noss 1999; Powell 1993, Spencer et al. 2011). Due to pressures from trapping and habitat fragmentation, the abundance of the species in the western United States has decreased dramatically and is thought to be limited to several small, isolated populations. In 2008, fishers were reintroduced to the Olympic Peninsula; however, bobcat (Lynx …

Agenda: Arizona V. California At 50: The Legacy And Future Of Governance, Reserved Rights, And Water Transfers, University Of Colorado Boulder. Getches-Wilkinson Center For Natural Resources, Energy, And The Environment

Arizona v. California at 50: The Legacy and Future of Governance, Reserved Rights, and Water Transfers (Martz Summer Conference, August 15-16)

The Colorado River is an economic, environmental and cultural lifeline of the southwestern United States, and the allocation of its scarce waters are a source of ongoing controversy. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Supreme Court decision in Arizona v. California. While the case was an important landmark in the still-evolving relationship between these two Lower Basin states, it remains most relevant today by the way in which it clarified federal rights and responsibilities. This is especially true in the areas of federal (including tribal) reserved rights, the role of the Interior Secretary in Lower Basin water …

Phenology-Assisted Classification Of C3 And C4 Grasses In The U.S. Great Plains And Their Climate Dependency With Modis Time Series, Cuizhen Wang, E. Raymond Hunt Jr., Li Zhang, Huadong Guo Aug 2013

Phenology-Assisted Classification Of C3 And C4 Grasses In The U.S. Great Plains And Their Climate Dependency With Modis Time Series, Cuizhen Wang, E. Raymond Hunt Jr., Li Zhang, Huadong Guo

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Grassland ecosystems in the North America are primarily composed of C3 and C4 plant functional types (PFTs) that have different responses to the changing climate. Knowledge of their spatial distributions and temporal variations helps us better understand the ecological functions and climate dependencies of grasslands. This study used the 500-m MODIS surface reflectance products (MOD09A1) from 2000 to 2009 to extract NDVI time series of C3 and C4 grass PFTs in different floristic regions (tallgrass, shortgrass, and mixed-grass prairies.) A set of phenology metrics, including Start of Season, End of Season, Season Length, Peak NDVI, Peak Date, andΣNDVI, were found …

Sites Of Disquiet: The Non-Space In Spanish American Short Narratives And Their Cinematic Transformations, Ilka Kressner Aug 2013

Sites Of Disquiet: The Non-Space In Spanish American Short Narratives And Their Cinematic Transformations, Ilka Kressner

Purdue Studies in Romance Literatures

Some of the most important writers of the twentieth century, including Borges, Cortázar, Rulfo, and García Márquez, have explored ambiguous sites of a disquieting nature. Their characters face merging perspectives, deferral, darkness, or emptiness. Such a space is neither a site of projection (as utopia or dystopia) nor a neutral setting (as the topos). For the characters, it is real and active, at once elusive and transforming. Despite the challenges of visualizing such slippery spaces, filmic experimentations in Spanish American cinema since the 1960s have sought to adapt these texts to the screen. Ilka Kressner’s Sites of Disquiet examines these …
