Feel The Fear: Learning Graphic Design In Affective Places And Online Spaces, Anitra Nottingham
Feel The Fear: Learning Graphic Design In Affective Places And Online Spaces, Anitra Nottingham
Learn X Design Conference Series
This paper explores the idea of pedagogic affect in both onsite and online graphic design learning spaces, and speculates on the role that this affect plays in the formation of the design student. I argue that embodied design knowledge is built by interactions with design professionals, activities that mimic the daily work of designers, and practices of display such as student work galleries within design schools. Therefore bodies in motion, and the places they move within, take on more importance in the making-up of a graphic design student than we may expect. This idea has implications for online design learning. …

Dendroarchaology: Using Tree Rings To Document Utah’S Historic Pioneer Structures, Robert Karl, Dr. Matthew Bekker
Dendroarchaology: Using Tree Rings To Document Utah’S Historic Pioneer Structures, Robert Karl, Dr. Matthew Bekker
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Pioneer history is a heritage of Utah. Utah was founded on the premise of pioneers venturing from the east and settling throughout Utah. Very few of these historic pioneer structures have been dated in the state of Utah and for many of these structures there exists only a rough idea of when they were built. Other structures have been dated but the information is unpublished and therefore unavailable to the general public and the scientific community. And, though the use of tree rings in archaeology has a rich history in the southwestern United States , most research has focused on …

Trends In The Spatial Distribution And Characteristics Of Korean-Americans, Megan Knowles, Dr. J. Matthew Shumway, Ruth Kerry
Journal of Undergraduate Research
In Human Geography minimal research has been done regarding the immigration and spatial distribution of Korean-Americans. Historically there has been a detectable relationship between the degree of spatial concentration of a specific population and their degree of social assimilation. Few studies have been conducted regarding Korean-Americans as a separate ethnic group, and these studies most often focus on economic, health, and cultural aspects of the community and tend to be more local in scale.

The use of human and veterinary pharmaceuticals is increasing. Over the past decade, there has been a proliferation of research into potential environmental impacts of pharmaceuticals in the environment. A Royal Society-supported seminar brought together experts from diverse scientific fields to discuss the risks posed by pharmaceuticals to wildlife. Recent analytical advances have revealed that pharmaceuticals are entering habitats via water, sewage, manure and animal carcases, and dispersing through food chains. Pharmaceuticals are designed to alter physiology at low doses and so can be particularly potent contaminants. The near extinction of Asian vultures following exposure to diclofenac is the key …

The Capitalist Hijacking Of International Women's Day: Russian And American Considerations, Barbara Lesavoy, Garrett Jordan
The Capitalist Hijacking Of International Women's Day: Russian And American Considerations, Barbara Lesavoy, Garrett Jordan
Journal of International Women's Studies
What are the origins and purpose of International Women’s Day (IWD) as a gender equality platform and what is the symbolic significance of IWD in and outside the United States (U.S.)? Of particular interest is IWD as comparatively observed in Soviet and post-Soviet Russia where the day, born in Sweden and Germany under socialist ideals, gained contextual ground. Using the 2011 IWD centenary as a research lens, analyzed within feminist theoretical frameworks and via Soviet historians, this paper provides a historic synopsis of IWD and of women in Russia, then considers the neoliberal and materialist backlash of IWD in the …
A Hidden History: Women's Activism In Ethiopia, Gemma Burgess
A Hidden History: Women's Activism In Ethiopia, Gemma Burgess
Journal of International Women's Studies
In Ethiopia a woman's identity is linked to her family and the prescribed gender role as a mother and home-maker, yet throughout Ethiopia's history there are examples of women who have roles that extend beyond the home and family into public, political life. This paper briefly describes this dominant gender identity of Ethiopian women before charting the changes to Ethiopian politics and women's place within them. It discusses how the shift to democratic politics opened new spaces for women's civil society activism. However, more recent political moves towards greater repression of civil society have closed the space for women's public, …
Muslim Women And Girls: Searching For Democracy And Self-Expression, Theresa Renee White, Jennifer Maria Hernandez
Muslim Women And Girls: Searching For Democracy And Self-Expression, Theresa Renee White, Jennifer Maria Hernandez
Journal of International Women's Studies
This project captures the stories of Muslim women and girls, and the individual ways in which they construct female identity and exercise religious freedom as a form of democracy and self-expression. Much has been written about Muslim women, their dress, hijabs, veils and more recently burqas (Shirazi, 2001; MacDonald, 2006; Haddah & Smith et al., 2006; McLarney, 2009), in the wake of the 9/11 events. Scholars have noted the increasing construction of hate, fear, and misunderstanding, as well as increasing incidences of “Islamophobia” through the construction of Muslims as “the other”. Others have focused on Muslim women’s negotiations of religious …
Changing Status Of Women And The Phenomenon Trafficking Of Women For Transactional Sex In Nigeria: A Qualitative Analysis, Clementina A. Osezua
Changing Status Of Women And The Phenomenon Trafficking Of Women For Transactional Sex In Nigeria: A Qualitative Analysis, Clementina A. Osezua
Journal of International Women's Studies
This paper examines the changing status of Bini women occasioned by the upsurge and endemic nature of the phenomenon of trafficking of women for the purpose of transactional sex. It engaged ethnographic methods of data collection with the use of family based interviews, focus group discussions using vignette stories, life histories, and key informant interviewing. Data were analyzed based on emerged themes. Findings revealed that “successful” trafficked Bini women enjoyed high socio-economic status in their families of procreation especially where family members were the direct recipients of the proceeds from transactional sex. Most mothers of “successfully” trafficked victims wielded greater …

Thomas Hardy, Christian Bryner, John Bennion
Journal of Undergraduate Research
For Professor Bennion’s Thomas Hardy project, I used my alloted 80 hours to research cultural and geographical information from five different novels: Jude the Obscure, The Return of the Native, The Mayor of Casterville, Tess of the d’Urbervilles, and Under the Greenwood Tree. With each of the novels, I jotted down the page number of any reference to geographical locations, place names, descriptions of local history, references to local customs, songs, buildings, furniture, local plant and animal life, and clothing.
A Measure Of Vessels: A Memoir, Barbara J. Walker
A Measure Of Vessels: A Memoir, Barbara J. Walker
Theses and Dissertations
In ancient times, my father's family name is believed to have designated a surveyor, designer, or `measurer' of sailing vessels. For these ancestors, most of whom dwelled on the archipelago of islands just north of the Normandy coast, known today as the Bailiwicks of Guernsey and Jersey, the mastery of both seafaring and the building of sea-worthy vessels were matters of survival, not sport. In crafting family stories about adventures living near, in, and on the water, I discovered this seafaring family history. Thus these memoir stories unfold in layers, as stories of emigrations and the joining of clans, family …
Intra-Asia Cultural Traffic: Transnational Flow Of East Asian Television Dramas In Indonesia, Shuri Mariasih Gietty Tambunan
Intra-Asia Cultural Traffic: Transnational Flow Of East Asian Television Dramas In Indonesia, Shuri Mariasih Gietty Tambunan
Lingnan Theses
East Asian television dramas have crossed the threshold of Indonesian mediascapes since the 1990s. This transnational product offers new resources for the "work of imagination" within the rapid flow of cultural products in Asia. By focusing on the Network Flows and Reception Theory models in the approaches to cultural globalization, the project asks how the process of intra-Asia cultural traffic mediates and is mediated by gatekeepers/intermediaries and by the ordinary experience of the contemporary Indonesian audience. East Asian television dramas have nurtured a process of transnational imagination and self-reflexivity in the Indonesian audience's everyday life. Furthermore, the Indonesian cultural, political …

The Collapse Of Place: Derelict Land, Deprivation, And Health Inequality In Glasgow, Scotland, Juliana A. Maantay
Cities and the Environment (CATE)
The population of Glasgow, Scotland has very poor health, compared to Scotland as a whole and the rest of the U.K., and even compared to other post-industrial cities with similar levels of deprivation and worklessness. This research maps and analyzes several health indicators to examine health inequities within Glasgow and explore the spatial correspondence between areas of poor health, high deprivation, and proximity to derelict land, much of which is contaminated from past industrial uses. People in high deprivation areas are significantly more likely to be hospitalized for respiratory disease and cancer; have low birth weight infants; and for men …
Building Appetites: The Design Of Locative Media Apps For Learning The Networked City, Andrew Morrison, Jonny Aspen
Building Appetites: The Design Of Locative Media Apps For Learning The Networked City, Andrew Morrison, Jonny Aspen
Learn X Design Conference Series
Recent years have seen the rapid growth of mobile communication and more recently smart phones and apps. But how might we approach ‘learning the networking city’? In this paper we reflect on the negotiation of a mobile app for cultural mapping of the networked city developed as part of a large design research project into social media and the city. The negotiation took place as part of an international master's level class of students of urbanism, architecture and design. The app called Streetscape was developed and trialled as part of a large funded research project into social media and the …
Patterns Of Anti-Muslim Violence In Burma: A Call For Accountability And Prevention, Andrea Gittleman, Marissa Brodney, Holly G. Atkinson
Patterns Of Anti-Muslim Violence In Burma: A Call For Accountability And Prevention, Andrea Gittleman, Marissa Brodney, Holly G. Atkinson
Publications and Research
In this report, the authors documents how persecution of and violence against the Rohingya in Burma has spread to other Muslim communities throughout the country. Physicians for Human Rights conducted eight separate investigations in Burma and the surrounding region between 2004 and 2013. PHR’s most recent field research in early 2013 indicates a need for renewed attention to violence against minorities and impunity for such crimes. The findings presented in this report are based on investigations conducted in Burma over two separate visits for a combined 21-day period between March and May 2013.

The Auxiliary Units: Britain's Last Line Of Defense During World War Ii, Cassy Rice
History Theses
The Auxiliary Unit was a secret highly trained group of men especially designed by Prime Minister Winston Churchill to be last line of defense for Britain if Hitler were to invade. Hitler was growing in power and strength at what seemed to be a daily rate, and he had just taken hold of France. Churchill and the rest of the United Kingdom not only felt threatened by an invasion, but they were also exceedingly concerned that the only thing separating Britain from Nazi Europe was the English Channel. If he were to successfully invade Britain, Hitler would have to overcome …

Cultural Competence Of Taiwanese Nurses, Chin-Nu Lin
Nursing Theses and Dissertations
Research on the cultural competence in nursing care in Taiwan is scarce. Little information has been documented regarding the level of cultural competence among its health care professionals. The aim of this study was to investigate the level of cultural competence among Taiwanese nurses. This study employed a quantitative design using a self-report online survey. Research findings indicated that Taiwanese nurses had low to moderate level of cultural competence. They perceived themselves as being not culturally competent when caring for clients from culturally and ethnically diverse backgrounds. While Taiwanese nurses scored high on cultural sensitivity and awareness, they scored low …
