Our study advances four elements of a digital geography of art (communities, semantic maps, areas, and flows)—a methodology that can be expanded in future Digital Humanities research.

Autonomous Soaring Using Real-Time Wind Estimation, Mark J. Cutler, Dr. Timothy Mclain Aug 2013

Autonomous Soaring Using Real-Time Wind Estimation, Mark J. Cutler, Dr. Timothy Mclain

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Small unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are obtaining increasing utilization in many applications. Their small size (0.5-4m wingspan) allows them to fly close to the ground, providing useful observation and tracking data. This small size, however, comes at the expense of flight time. As UAV size decreases, the amount of stored energy (electrical or chemical) the UAV is able to carry also decreases. If long flight times are to be obtained with a small UAV, other energy sources must be exploited. Naturally occurring atmospheric phenomena provide one such potential energy source.

Modeling Urban Forest Biomass Using Aisa+ Hyperspectral Data, Brian Bunker, Dr. Ryan Jensen

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Urban forests are trees and other woody vegetation growing in an urban environment. Urban forests have been shown to have economic, aesthetic, and ecological benefits (Gatrell & Jensen, 2002; Nowak & Crane, 2002). Monitoring the health of Urban Forests is important to maintain a healthy environment for humans in their principal habitat. Our research focused on developing methods to monitor urban forest biomass using remote sensing data.

Race And The Death Penalty: An Empirical Assessment Of First Degree Murder Convictions In Tennessee After Gregg V. Georgia, Hemant Sharma, John M. Scheb Ii, David J. Houston, Kristin Wagers Aug 2013

Race And The Death Penalty: An Empirical Assessment Of First Degree Murder Convictions In Tennessee After Gregg V. Georgia, Hemant Sharma, John M. Scheb Ii, David J. Houston, Kristin Wagers

Tennessee Journal of Race, Gender, & Social Justice

We analyze over 1,000 first-degree murder convictions in the state of Tennessee from 1977 through 2007 to determine if either “race-of-defendant” or “race-of-victim” effects are present when it comes to the application of capital punishment. We control for numerous factors related to the demographics of offender and victim, as well as the circumstances of the crime itself and the availability of evidence. Our primary findings note that prosecutors are more likely to seek a death sentence when a victim is white, but we also find that juries are not affected by the race of the victim. We also find no …

Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications

In September 2012 the Aquatic Ecology Practicum class from Utah State University studied the 51km river continuum of the Little Bear River located in northern Utah (Figure 1). The relatively pristine headwaters of the river begin in the Wasatch Mountain Range at an altitude of 1800 m. The river flows northward into Cache Valley where it terminates in Cutler Reservoir (1345 m elevation). Agricultural development and urbanization have modified the natural terrain and chemical characteristics of the river, and Hyrum Reservoir, located midway along the gradient causes a discontinuity in river processes. The results from analyses of stream condition indicators …

A Profile Of The Physical Attributes Of The Little Bear River In The Context Of The Serial Discontinuity Concept, Marc Weston

Natural Resources and Environmental Issues

To study the Little Bear River’s physical characteristics in the context of the serial discontinuity concept, sites were sampled along a continuum from the headwaters to 51 km downstream, near where the Little Bear River flows into Cutler Reservoir. Samples were collected in September 2012 at base flow. To estimate sediment sizes along the transect pebble counts were conducted at six sites and where possible pebble counts were done in both pools and riffles. Sediment sizes showed a decrease in median size (D50 ) of 45 mm at the upper station to the lower station where the substrate was a …

Publications and Research

Background: Genomic and transcriptomic sequence data are essential tools for tackling ecological problems. Using an approach that combines next-generation sequencing, de novo transcriptome assembly, gene annotation and synthetic gene construction, we identify and cluster the protein families from Favia corals from the northern Red Sea.

Results: We obtained 80 million 75 bp paired-end cDNA reads from two Favia adult samples collected at 65 m (Fav1, Fav2) on the Illumina GA platform, and generated two de novo assemblies using ABySS and CAP3. After removing redundancy and filtering out low quality reads, our transcriptome datasets contained 58,268 (Fav1) and 62,469 (Fav2) contigs …

A Case For Teaching Geography, Richard Huck Aug 2013

A Case For Teaching Geography, Richard Huck

Administrative Issues Journal

The knowledge of geography is clearly lacking in college students. “We cannot understand who we are unless we understand history, and there is no way we can understand history if we do not understand the geography behind it”! How can we understand the Civil War without understanding the importance of the Mississippi River? A great many students cannot locate the Mississippi River on a map! This paper is original research based on my classroom experience and on a questionnaire given to my students at the beginning of each semester. About 150 students have been given this questionnaire over the 5 …

Investigating The Housing Market For Student Tenants Surrounding An Urban University, Olivia M. Dobbs Ms. Aug 2013

Investigating The Housing Market For Student Tenants Surrounding An Urban University, Olivia M. Dobbs Ms.

Honors College Theses

The private housing market for students around Wayne State University, an urban campus in Detroit, Michigan, stands in a fast-changing period. The area has grown economically from institutional and medical center investment in the past few years, causing occupancy and rents to rise. This follows years of disinvestment that allowed rent rates to fall to comfortable rates for students. The University has published its interest in developing the “campus life” including more off-campus private market housing for students, while developers see potential for even higher rents for young professionals. This study assesses the current perceptions of a sample of rental …

National Geo-Graphics: The New "Federalism Function" Of American Tort Law, Riaz Tejani Aug 2013

National Geo-Graphics: The New "Federalism Function" Of American Tort Law, Riaz Tejani

San Diego Law Review

“Community” was once the wellspring of norms governing risk, harm, and compensation. Today, people, goods, and information move at such high speed across such wide distances that markets come to replace community as the measure of socially “reasonable” conduct. Alongside this rise of mass-market industrial and media actors, American tort law has experienced unprecedented influence of national rules upon once purely state common law doctrines. Thus far the shift has been only partial—through constitutional rights and federal preemption, it has impacted certain industries such as bioengineering but left untouched others such as medical care. Critics of this partial federalization espouse …

The Use Of Forest Stand Age Information In An Atmospheric Co2 Inversion Applied To North America, Feng Deng, Jing M. Chen, Y. Pan, W. Peters, R. Birdsey, K. Mccullough, Jingfeng Xiao Aug 2013

The Use Of Forest Stand Age Information In An Atmospheric Co2 Inversion Applied To North America, Feng Deng, Jing M. Chen, Y. Pan, W. Peters, R. Birdsey, K. Mccullough, Jingfeng Xiao

All Materials

Atmospheric inversions have become an important tool in quantifying carbon dioxide (CO2) sinks and sources at a variety of spatiotemporal scales, but associated large uncertainties restrain the inversion research community from reaching agreement on many important subjects. We enhanced an atmospheric inversion of the CO2 flux for North America by introducing spatially explicit information on forest stand age for US and Canada as an additional constraint, since forest carbon dynamics are closely related to time since disturbance. To use stand age information in the inversion, we converted stand age into an age factor, and included the covariances between subcontinental regions …

An Assessment Of Worldview-2 Imagery For The Classification Of A Mixed Deciduous Forest, Nahid Carter Aug 2013

An Assessment Of Worldview-2 Imagery For The Classification Of A Mixed Deciduous Forest, Nahid Carter

Theses

Remote sensing provides a variety of methods for classifying forest communities and can be a valuable tool for the impact assessment of invasive species. The emerald ash borer (Agrilus planipennis) infestation of ash trees (Fraxinus) in the United States has resulted in the mortality of large stands of ash throughout the Northeast. This study assessed the suitability of multi-temporal Worldview-2 multispectral satellite imagery for classifying a mixed deciduous forest in Upstate New York. Training sites were collected using a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver, with each training site consisting of a single tree of a corresponding class. Six classes were …

The Intersecting And Integrating Identities Of Rural Lesbian, Gay, And Bisexual Christians, Brandi Woodell Aug 2013

The Intersecting And Integrating Identities Of Rural Lesbian, Gay, And Bisexual Christians, Brandi Woodell

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The majority of discussions of gay and lesbian experiences in the United States associate gay culture with urban areas. However, there is still a significant population of LGBT people living in the rural United States (Baumle et al 2009). Many of these individuals identify with rural spaces and seek to maintain “country” identities. As with rural spaces, there is an assumption that Christian identities directly conflict with those of non-heterosexual identities. This study examines the ways in which these individuals create and negotiate stereotypically conflicting identities regarding their sexuality, their rural identities and their religious identities. The goal of this …

Two Essays On The Efficiency, Diversification, And Performance Of Financial Institutions, Abu Khan Aug 2013

Two Essays On The Efficiency, Diversification, And Performance Of Financial Institutions, Abu Khan

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

In the first chapter I investigate the change in operating performance, efficiency and value addition of US bank merger and acquisition after GLBA. I extend the previous research by combining all the previous methodology used in merger literature and added a new methodology namely Expected EVA improvement. I will test whether these performance metrics have similar results or the performance of merger vary depending on the measurements. I will also examine the factors that have significant impact on the change in the banks’ performance.

My results show that industry-adjusted operating performance of merged banks increases significantly after a merger.I also …

Frequency, Intensity, And Sensitivity To Sea Surface Temperature Of North Atlantic Tropical Cyclones In Best-Track And Simulated Data, Sarah Strazzo, James B. Elsner, Jill C. Trepanier, Kerry A. Emanuel Aug 2013

Frequency, Intensity, And Sensitivity To Sea Surface Temperature Of North Atlantic Tropical Cyclones In Best-Track And Simulated Data, Sarah Strazzo, James B. Elsner, Jill C. Trepanier, Kerry A. Emanuel

Publications

Synthetic hurricane track data generated from a downscaling approach are compared to best-track (observed) data to analyze differences in regional frequency, intensity, and sensitivity of limiting intensity to sea surface temperature (SST). Overall, the spatial distributions of observed and simulated hurricane counts match well, although there are relatively fewer synthetic storms in the eastern quarter of the basin. Additionally, regions of intense synthetic hurricanes tend to coincide with regions of intense observed hurricanes. The sensitivity of limiting hurricane intensity to SST computed from synthetic data is slightly lower than sensitivity computed from observed data (5.561.31 m s21 (standard error, SE) …
