Comparison Of The Virulence Markers Of Helicobacter Pylori And Their Associated Diseases In Patients From Pakistan And Afghanistan, Javed Yakoob, Zaigham Abbas, Wasim Jafri, Muhammad W. Usman, Fatima Jafri, Safia Awan
Section of Gastroenterology
BACKGROUND/AIM: Helicobacter pylori is a Gram-negative bacteria, which is associated with development of gastroduodenal diseases. The prevalence of H. pylori and the virulence markers cytotoxin-associated gene A and E (cagA, cagE) and vacuolating-associated cytotoxin gene (vacA) alleles varies in different parts of the world. H. pylori virulence markers cagA, cagE, and vacA alleles in local and Afghan nationals with H. pylori-associated gastroduodenal diseases were studied.
PATIENTS AND METHODS:Two hundred and ten patients with upper gastrointestinal symptoms and positive for H. pylori by the urease test and histology were included. One hundred and nineteen were local nationals and 91 were Afghans. …

Plant Management Systems Of British Columbia's First Peoples, Nancy J. Turner, Douglas Deur, Dana Lepofsky
Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations
This article provides an overview of the diverse plant resource management strategies of First Nations of British Columbia. Management practices range from relatively large-scale (geographically) and longterm activities – such as the use of fire to clear prairies and subalpine meadows – to very focused actions, such as the pruning of individual shrubs. We describe plant resource management practices and the diverse methods used to identify them, and focus on three case studies to augment this description. These case studies exemplify the range of plants and ecosystems that were managed as well as the combinations of strategies and outcomes encompassed …

There is growing support for improvements to the quality of the walking environment, including more investments to promote pedestrian travel. Metropolitan planning organizations (MPOs) are improving regional travel demand forecasting models to better represent walking and bicycling and to expand the evaluative capacity of models to address policy-relevant issues like air quality, public health, and the smart allocation of infrastructure and other resources. This report describes an innovative, spatially disaggregate method to integrate walking activity into trip-based travel models. Using data for the Portland, OR, metropolitan area, the method applies trip generation at a new micro-scale spatial unit: a 264-foot-by-264-foot …
The Recruitment Of Female “Mules” By Transnational Criminal Organizations: Securitization Of Drug Trafficking In The Philippines And Beyond, Stéphanie Martel
The Recruitment Of Female “Mules” By Transnational Criminal Organizations: Securitization Of Drug Trafficking In The Philippines And Beyond, Stéphanie Martel
Social Transformations Journal of the Global South
Southeast Asia has long been vulnerable to drug trafficking. Recently, intensified flows of persons, goods, and capital across borders have rendered it more fragmented and complex. The recruitment of female drug “mules” by transnational criminal organizations is a growing concern for both national and international counter-trafficking authorities in the region. This phenomenon has been the focus of a particular securitization process, emerging primarily in the Philippines but having regional implications, which has supported the implementation of counter-trafficking policy initiatives on both levels of state and region in Southeast Asia.
Reshaping Metro Manila: Gentrification, Displacement, And The Challenge Facing The Urban Capital, Ray Simon Roderos
Reshaping Metro Manila: Gentrification, Displacement, And The Challenge Facing The Urban Capital, Ray Simon Roderos
Social Transformations Journal of the Global South
Globalization and liberal economic reforms provide both opportunities and threats for developing cities. It can bring much needed capital and economic development but also at the possible cost of displacement and marginalization. Metro Manila contributes US$7.7 billion to the Philippine economy by remaining competitive in attracting and facilitating the flow of capital. However, this economic development translates to displacement, with its very citizens being affected. We analyze this phenomenon through the existing literature on Metro Manila and gentrification. This paper addresses the key questions: Who are the key players in Metro Manila’s gentrification? What are the implications of their actions? …

Swot Analysis Of Alternative Development Strategies For Dealing In Defense Of The Nation In Papua Disintegration, Vita Bayu Indah Yanti
Indonesia Law Review
As one of Indonesia’s provinces located in the most eastern part of the country, Papua’s tumultuous history has resulted in the granting of a special autonomy under Law Number 21 Year 2001 on Special Autonomy for Papua Province. The special autonomy u is a social contract between the Republic of Indonesia (Republic of Indonesia) to Papua since the 1960s. Conflict in Papua has existed at the time of Papua became part of the Republic of Indonesia in 1963. The conflict in Papua is an intrastate conflict and need to be resolved so that no large material losses and social cohesion. …

Adjustment Costs And Long Run Spatial Agglomerations, William Brock, Anastasios Xepapadeas, Athanasios Yannacopoulos
Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers
We introduce knowledge spillovers as an externality in the production function of competitive firms operating in a finite spatial domain under adjustment costs. Spillovers are spatial as productive knowledge flows more easily among firms located nearby. When knowledge spillovers are not internalized by firms spatial agglomerations may emerge endogenously in a competitive equilibrium, however, they do not emerge at the steady state of the social optimum.
Trade Liberalisation And Global-Scale Forest Transition, Rafael González-Val, Fernando Pueyo
Trade Liberalisation And Global-Scale Forest Transition, Rafael González-Val, Fernando Pueyo
Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers
In this paper, we develop a theoretical model that provides an additional explanation for the forest transition based on a trade liberalisation scenario. Furthermore, in contrast with most explanations, in which the forest transition can only take place at a local level at the expense of other areas, ours is capable of supporting such phenomenon at a worldwide level. We introduce a renewable natural resource (wood), used as an input by manufacturing firms, in a framework with economic geography foundations: transport costs affect the distribution of firms between countries. In a general equilibrium, the results reproduce the forest transition at …

Extensive CO2 vents have been discovered in the Wagner Basin, northern Gulf of California, where they create large areas with lowered seawater pH. Such areas are suitable for investigations of long-term biological effects of ocean acidification and effects of CO2 leakage from subsea carbon capture storage. Here, we show responses of benthic foraminifera to seawater pH gradients at 74-207m water depth. Living (rose Bengal stained) benthic foraminifera included Nonionella basispinata, Epistominella bradyana and Bulimina marginata. Studies on foraminifera at CO2 vents in the Mediterranean and off Papua New Guinea have shown dramatic long-term effects of acidified seawater. We found living …

Carbon And Oxygen Isotope Study Of Carbonates From Watling's Blue Hole And Blue Hole Five, San Salvador, Bahamas, Elaine D. Flynn
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
Carbonate platforms, such as the Bahamas, formed through deposition and sea level fluctuations. These platforms contain records of rapid interglacial climate change and are useful in studying the impacts of climate change on similar tropical carbonate environments. Blue holes are dissolution lakes that may be beneficial for understanding climate change and anthropogenic impact. A δ13C and δ18O study was conducted on lake sediment core samples from Watling’s Blue Hole and Blue Hole Five on San Salvador Island, Bahamas. These lakes are located in a failed housing development and Watling’s Blue Hole was once part of an …
Rice And Magic: A Cultural History From The Precolonial World To The Present, Filomeno V.; Aguilar Jr.
Rice And Magic: A Cultural History From The Precolonial World To The Present, Filomeno V.; Aguilar Jr.
Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints
Beliefs in rice spirits were integral to the magical worldview of the precolonial inhabitants of these islands. Under Spanish colonialism, rice became a staple but it underwent disenchantment and symbolic marginality. By the 1870s rice production fell short relative to demand. Twentieth-century initiatives to address persistent shortages culminated in the 1960s Green Revolution, which further altered the rice plant and ushered in the age of practicality. Nonetheless, because rice production cannot be fully controlled, farmers still deploy culturally meaningful strategies to deal with uncertainties. The old meanings of rice for commensality have also proven resilient and reveal peculiarly Filipino ways. Keywords: …

All Materials
Climate change has led to more frequent extreme winters (aka, dzud) and summer droughts on the Mongolian Plateau during the last decade. Among these events, the 2000–2002 combined summer drought–dzud and 2010 dzud were the most severe on vegetation. We examined the vegetation response to these extremes through the past decade across the Mongolian Plateau as compared to decadal means. We first assessed the severity and extent of drought using the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) precipitation data and the Palmer drought severity index (PDSI). We then examined the effects of drought by mapping anomalies in vegetation indices (EVI, EVI2) …
Comparisons Of Genetic Diversity Among Disjunct Populations Of Magnolia Tripetala, Victoria A. Gilkison
Comparisons Of Genetic Diversity Among Disjunct Populations Of Magnolia Tripetala, Victoria A. Gilkison
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
Plant ranges are often made up of core areas where the distribution is continuous and the population density is high with small disjunct populations at the margins of the core. One well-studied type of disjunct population is formed by long distance dispersal as plants migrate away from disjunct Pleistocene refugial populations. The retreat of the Wisconsinan glaciation resulted in the outward dispersal of many plant species from their refugial locations to areas with suitable habitat. Many plants expanded their ranges through rare-long-distance dispersal.
This study used microsatellites to compare the genetic diversity, inbreeding levels, and gene flow frequency of disjunct …

This work explores the uses of violence during the October Crisis of 1970 in Québec, Canada. The author questions the current state of historiographical approaches to the October Crisis and posits a new approach. Violence, seen as a language, permeates the events surrounding the kidnapping and later murder of Pierre Laporte. The reaction of the Québécois public at large is examine in response to the uses of violence by the belligerent parties. The work concludes that the FLQ did not possess the requisite capacity for violence to effectively compete with the Canadian Federal Government and other insights into the legacy …

Faulty Measurements And Shaky Tools: An Exploration Into Hazus And The Seismic Vulnerabilities Of Portland, Or, Brittany Ann Brannon
Dissertations and Theses
Events or forces of nature with catastrophic consequences, or "natural disasters," have increased in both frequency and force due to climate change and increased urbanization in climate-sensitive areas. To create capacity to face these dangers, an entity must first quantify the threat and translate scientific knowledge on nature into comprehensible estimates of cost and loss. These estimates equip those at risk with knowledge to enact policy, formulate mitigation plans, raise awareness, and promote preparedness in light of potential destruction. Hazards-United States, or Hazus, is one such tool created by the federal government to estimate loss from a variety of threats, …

Beyond The Yellow Brick Road: Queer Localization In The Age Of Anita Bryant, 1974-1980, Stewart John Van Cleve
Dissertations and Theses
Collective memories of gay rights in the late 1970s offer a conflicted portrait of Anita Bryant, an infamous anti-gay personality who inspired, organized, or funded four anti-gay referendums between 1976 and 1978. I employ J. Jack Halberstam's concept of "metronormativity" in an analysis of campaigns that failed to preserve local gay rights laws in Miami and Eugene, the first and last of Bryant's four "target cities." I use L. Frank Baum's Wizard of Oz as a metaphor to compare the beginning of Bryant's role as a leader in Miami to her subsequent role as a specter of national controversy in …
Using Dendrochronology To Identify An Unknown Earthquake, Douglas Metcalf, Dr. Matthew Bekker
Using Dendrochronology To Identify An Unknown Earthquake, Douglas Metcalf, Dr. Matthew Bekker
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Geologists use various dating techniques to determine the ages of geologic phenomena. Dendrochronology- the analysis of annual growth-rings in trees- is one of these methods (Stoffel and Bollschwieler, 2008). Unlike other dating procedures, it can determine the exact years in which various events occurred. Such events include earthquakes, which produce distinct responses in tree-ring growth patterns (Jacoby, 1997).
A Multiplicity Of Masculinities: The Formation Of National Identity In Imperial Germany And Its Influence On Notions Of The Masculine, Faruk Pasic
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
This investigation focuses roughly on the interval between 1870 and 1890, which can be described as the formative period of the German Empire. It seeks to understand how the development of a national identity in Imperial Germany contributed to the notion that certain expressions of masculinity formed the “German character,” i.e., the notion that there was a particular German masculinity.

The Utah Department of Health revisited a study published in 2003 in the American Journal of Public Health because they desire to understand how Utah cities are using local laws to encourage or discourage physical activity of residents. Since 2003 only Hawaii has conducted a similar study. We have had the chance and opportunity to refine and perfect methods previously used to research and analyze issues that many other states may use in the next decade.
