Where Have All The Young Trees Gone? A Big Picture Look At The Lack Of Seedlings And Saplings In Urban Forests, Wes L. Hanson, Leigh A. Hanson, Nancy Broshot

Science and Social Sciences

We take a big picture look at the lack of seedlings, saplings and young trees in urban forests using our research in Forest Park in Portland, Oregon. Broshot, who measured vegetation at 25 sites in Forest Park, recorded significantly fewer live seedlings, saplings and young trees and significantly more dead seedlings, saplings and young trees in 2003 than in 1993. The percent mortality of western red cedar seedlings that were planted at 9 sites in Forest Park in 2005 ranged from less than 5% to over 70%. Investigations into the cause of seedling death has discounted predation by deer, elk …

The Shifting Landscape Of Amish Agriculture: Balancing Tradition And Innovation In An Organic Farming Cooperative, Matthew J. Mariola, David L. Mcconnell May 2013

The Shifting Landscape Of Amish Agriculture: Balancing Tradition And Innovation In An Organic Farming Cooperative, Matthew J. Mariola, David L. Mcconnell

All Faculty Articles

In the context of the recent proliferation of alternative operations and marketing schemes across the agricultural landscape, this article examines an Amish organic farming cooperative in northeast Ohio. Contrary to popular perception, the large majority of Amish are not full-time farmers, and those who do farm typically use conventional, chemical-intensive methods. The adoption of certified organic among the Amish is a pragmatic decision that stems from concerns over the sociocultural effects of losing their agrarian heritage, but it also raises challenges that require a careful balance between market imperatives and cultural traditions. We investigate these challenges and the Amish response …

Something Other Than I Had Planned, Kristy Carpenter May 2013

Something Other Than I Had Planned, Kristy Carpenter

Theses

Something Other Than I Had Planned is an extended portrait of my mother, exploring themes of representation, familial roles, the archive, and personal narrative. Curating existing images from our family archive as well as creating my own visual documentation, the series examines both the current life and past history of my mother in an attempt to understand her as an individual and our evolving relationship as mother and daughter. Rooted in research of historical representations and understandings of the mother figure, as well as photography's history as a tool for preserving and examining the past, I explore ideas around nostalgia, …

International Non-Governmental Organizations In Vietnam: A Case Study With Project Gaia, Alyssa L. Bosold May 2013

International Non-Governmental Organizations In Vietnam: A Case Study With Project Gaia, Alyssa L. Bosold

Celebration

In 1986, the Vietnamese government undertook a series of reforms known as doi moi. These reforms were mainly economic adjustments that encouraged globalization through capitalism, international trade, and foreign investment. They restructured Vietnam’s economy from a centrally-planned system to a market economy with a socialist orientation. This presentation focuses on the political and cultural aspects of globalization after doi moi, and analyzes the development of international non-governmental organizations (INGOs) in Vietnam. Specifically, it seeks to address the following research question: How has the INGO sector changed with increasing globalization in Vietnam after the 1986 doi moi reforms, and what are …

Who's Responsible? Personal Beliefs, Civic Engagement And Environmental Attitudes, Brooke Vavricka May 2013

Who's Responsible? Personal Beliefs, Civic Engagement And Environmental Attitudes, Brooke Vavricka

Student Theses and Dissertations

This paper examines whom individuals hold responsible for environmental protection, controlling for environmental civic engagement and demographic measures. Using the General Social Survey 2010, I test the hypotheses whether political ideology affects beliefs about personal responsibility and government responsibility on environmental protection. Results of this study find political ideology to be the most significant predictor of environmental responsibility, while race and education were also found to be significant predictors. Environmental civic engagement did not necessarily predict individual environmental responsibility.

Reproduction And Functional Response Of Cornus Florida Across An Urban Landscape Gradient, Angela Redwine May 2013

Reproduction And Functional Response Of Cornus Florida Across An Urban Landscape Gradient, Angela Redwine

Theses and Dissertations

Urbanization greatly alters plant and pollinator communities and can affect pollinator movement and subsequent gene flow. Plants persisting in urban areas must adjust to local environmental conditions often different from those in which they naturally evolved, and cultivation techniques for landscaping species have developed traits suitable for existence in urban habitats. Cultivated varieties and native conspecifics often exist in geographic proximity, and if pollinator movement is not blocked by urban structural components, functional differences may negatively impact spatially proximate native populations. I used spatial analysis of successful pollination of Cornus florida to estimate how pollinator movement is affected by urban …

Archeological Investigations For The Levi Jordan Plantation House Stabilization, Brazoria County, Texas, Jennifer K. Mcwilliams, Douglas K. Boyd, Aaron Norment May 2013

Archeological Investigations For The Levi Jordan Plantation House Stabilization, Brazoria County, Texas, Jennifer K. Mcwilliams, Douglas K. Boyd, Aaron Norment

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

The Levi Jordan plantation house is one of the few antebellum plantation structures to have survived in Brazoria County. It is the only standing structure associated with the plantation, which began operating in 1848 and was occupied continually up through the 1990s. The original house, built in the early 1850s using slave labor, was a 20x60-ft two-story wooden frame structure. It was altered many times during its long occupation, often due to hurricane damage. A portion of the Levi Jordan Plantation was acquired by the State of Texas in 2002 and managed by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department until …

From Practical Woodsman To Professional Forester: Henry S. Graves And The Professionalization Of Forestry In The United States, 1900-1920, Brendan D. Ross

Kaplan Senior Essay Prize for Use of Library Special Collections

This research paper looks at the life and career of Henry S. Graves (1871-1951), the founding dean of the Yale Forest School who, along with Gifford Pinchot, lead efforts to professionalize forest science in the United States. In working to bring a new applied science to the U.S., Graves sought to legitimize forestry within academia, federal bureaucracy, and the communities of the American West. Graves’ diverse career adds rich context to the environmental history of forestry and the history of professionalization. Drawing on Graves’ extensive archives, from his work at the Yale Forest School to his time as second chief …

The Emergence Of The Brics – Implications For Global Governance, Sotiris Petropoulos Ph.D. May 2013

The Emergence Of The Brics – Implications For Global Governance, Sotiris Petropoulos Ph.D.

Journal of International and Global Studies

The global financial crisis of 2008, with its detrimental effects on the global economy, was the starting point of a transformation of the global governance landscape. This fluid political and economic global environment seems to be leading to the enhancement of the position of regional powers, especially within the developing world. Hence, the importance of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and, to some extent, South Africa, within the global governance structure has increased. This rise of importance is derived from the enhancement of the economic capabilities of these powers and the fact that economic interdependence has rendered the world more sensitive …

Iberian Globalization And The Rise Of Catholic Theology Of Religions In The Xvi Century, Enrico Beltramini Ph.D. May 2013

Iberian Globalization And The Rise Of Catholic Theology Of Religions In The Xvi Century, Enrico Beltramini Ph.D.

Journal of International and Global Studies

This article provides a synthetic view of the historical and theological components that explain how Catholicism came to understand the great religious systems in Asia as doctrinally inferior during the sixteenth century in response to the discovery/invasion of the “New Worlds” by Iberian Europeans.2 A strong emphasis on the universal salvific will of God led Catholic theologians to elaborate a doctrine that ultimately altered Catholicism’s understanding of non-Christian religions. 3 The article suggests that the predominant Catholic view of non-Christian religions has been shaped by a specific theological vision that was raised in sixteenth century Southern Europe. In order to …
