Deprivation And Resistance: Environmental Crisis, Political Action, And Conflict Resolution In The Niger Delta Since The 1980s, David Aworawo Ph.D. May 2013

Deprivation And Resistance: Environmental Crisis, Political Action, And Conflict Resolution In The Niger Delta Since The 1980s, David Aworawo Ph.D.

Journal of International and Global Studies

The interlocking relationship between environmental degradation, poverty, and violent conflict has been a prominent theme contained within the literature on sustainable development and conflict resolution since the mid-twentieth century. While some analysts have argued that violence has not been limited to the poor and deprived, many have concluded from various studies that the devastation of the environment, poverty, and conflict are inextricably intertwined. This article examines this theme by analyzing the pattern of violence and nature of conflict resolution in the oil-producing enclave of the Niger Delta in the past three decades. A report of the United Nations Environment Programme …

Intracellular Delivery Of Nanoparticles And Dnas By Ir9 Cell-Penetrating Peptides, Betty Revon Liu, Ji-Sing Liou, Yue-Wern Huang, Robert Aronstam, Han-Jung Lee May 2013

Intracellular Delivery Of Nanoparticles And Dnas By Ir9 Cell-Penetrating Peptides, Betty Revon Liu, Ji-Sing Liou, Yue-Wern Huang, Robert Aronstam, Han-Jung Lee

Biological Sciences Faculty Research & Creative Works

Cell-penetrating peptides (CPPs) comprised of basic amino residues are able to cross cytoplasmic membranes and are able to deliver biologically active molecules inside cells. However, CPP/cargo entrapment in endosome limits biomedical utility as cargoes are destroyed in the acidic environment. In this study, we demonstrate protein transduction of a novel CPP comprised of an INF7 fusion peptide and nona-arginine (designated IR9). IR9 noncovalently interacts with quantum dots (QDs) and DNAs to form stable IR9/QD and IR9/DNA complexes which are capable of entering human A549 cells. Zeta-potentials were a better predictor of transduction efficiency than gel shift analysis, emphasizing the importance …

Overcoming Barriers To Teaching Action-Based Environmental Education: A Multiple Case Study Of Teachers In The Public School Classroom, Terry Rachael Adams May 2013

Overcoming Barriers To Teaching Action-Based Environmental Education: A Multiple Case Study Of Teachers In The Public School Classroom, Terry Rachael Adams

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

As the human population increases, it becomes increasingly more important for society to understand the impact of humans on the environment. Preserving fixed resources by engaging in sustainable practices is necessary to ensure those resources are available for future generations. Since the early 1960s, policy makers and educators alike have sought to ensure that students graduate environmentally literate. Previous research has identified a multitude of barriers that limit classroom teacher’s ability to integrate environmental education into their curriculum. The purpose of this study was to investigate how teachers overcome those barriers that restrict the integration of action based environmental education …

Keeping The Eye Of Siberia Luminous: Environmentalism On Lake Baikal In A Transitioning Society (1930-2013), Ingrid K. Korsgard

German and Russian Studies Honors Projects

Lake Baikal has been a source of life with deep spiritual meaning for the peoples of the region. However with the development of human communities around Baikal, the resources of the lake face danger of over-use. In the twentieth century when industrialization posed particular risks to the lake, citizens of the Baikal region rallied to protect their homeland. In so doing, these environmentalists had to work within the political system of the time. This research examines the ways in which environmentalists on Baikal carved out spaces for activism in the face of political turmoil and economic pressures. Tracing the evolution …

From Potato Chips To Kale Chips: Examining Motivations Of Clark Community Gardeners In Worcester, Ma, Marianne Sarkis, Tiffany Lee, Steph Fenner, Erin Barta, Kristina Kalolo

Local Knowledge: Worcester Area Community-Based Research

Research Question: What is the association between community gardening and food justice among Clark community gardeners?

Abstract:

Research was conducted in the form of free-list, pile-sort, interviews, and surveys in order to see if there is an association between food justice and Clark community gardeners. The responses support the conclusion that Clark community gardeners does not conform to the food justice interpretation of a community garden. Even though the two actors have similar methods and ideologies, neither is doing so to try and fit the others definitions.

Taproot: A Journal of Outdoor Education

Wisconsin was the first state to require its teachers to receive "adequate instruction in the conservation of natural resources"' establishing—as early as 1935—a clear ambition to continue this mindset through conservation education. Conservation education has grown into Environmental Education (EE) and Education for Sustainability (EfS), and today, Wisconsin serves as a metaphorical magnet for students and organizations looking to further these fields. In particular, the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (UWSP) College of Natural Resources is home to a variety of outdoor education majors and minors that can be difficult to find at other universities, but whose popularity continues to thrive. …

Biopiracy And Vaccines: Indonesia And The World Health Organization’S New Pandemic Influenza Plan, Shawn C. Smallman Ph.D. May 2013

Biopiracy And Vaccines: Indonesia And The World Health Organization’S New Pandemic Influenza Plan, Shawn C. Smallman Ph.D.

Journal of International and Global Studies

Viral samples of avian influenza are essential to preparing pre-pandemic vaccines. In 2007, the conflicting interests of the developed and developing nations led Indonesia to briefly stop sharing viral samples. The result was a struggle in which the two blocs argued for different paradigms for viral sample sharing. The first paradigm, articulated by the developed world, depicted the issue as one of health security, in which international law mandated the sharing of viral samples. The second paradigm, advanced by the developing world, depicted viral sample sharing as a form of biopiracy, which violated countries’ sovereign control of their biological resources. …

Effects Of Stream Restoration And Storm Events On Stream-Groundwater Interactions, Margaret Zimmer May 2013

Effects Of Stream Restoration And Storm Events On Stream-Groundwater Interactions, Margaret Zimmer

Earth & Environmental Sciences - Theses

The body of literature on stream-groundwater interactions is rapidly growing, but little is known about the effects of either storm events or in-stream restoration on the interactions between surface water and groundwater. The chapters of this thesis explore two of these questions at the same locality of interest: (1) subsurface geochemical dynamics across a riffle bedform in an unrestored stream during a storm event and subsurface geochemical, and (2) hyporheic exchange dynamics at baseflow conditions pre- and one year post- stream restoration.

The study site was a 30 m stretch of stream that underwent stream restoration through installation of a …

Escherichia Coli: Levels Found In Suva Water And The Implications To Fijians: A Case Study Of The Vatuwaqa River, Hesper D. Kohler May 2013

Escherichia Coli: Levels Found In Suva Water And The Implications To Fijians: A Case Study Of The Vatuwaqa River, Hesper D. Kohler

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Urban migration is causing a high increase in the population of Suva, Fiji, and the population is growing at a rate that exceeds development planning and infrastructure. Several squatter settlements are established within the city limits where raw sewage, containing infectious pathogens and diseases, is released into the waterways. This study focuses on the area accumulation of the pathogenic bacteria from fecal contamination in the form of E. coli down the Vatuwaga River. E. coli is used as a water quality indicator because, if it is present, other possible pathogens and viruses such as cholera and salmonella could be present. …

(In)Formal Distinction In Urban Istanbul: Evaluating Spatial Performance, Hannah Breshears May 2013

(In)Formal Distinction In Urban Istanbul: Evaluating Spatial Performance, Hannah Breshears

Architecture Undergraduate Honors Theses

As globalization continues to draw the cities of the world into closer economic and intellectual dependence, Istanbul stands as bridge between two continents and a city poised for urban transformation. Massive tracts of informally designed communities are being cleared to accommodate the structure of the modern, tourism driven city. The attempt to purge the city of its squatter heritage is startling and raises questions of cultural and architectural integrity in urban development. Istanbul’s desire for expanded global investment and tourism is particularly apparent in the industrial district of Kartal, whose blended development is the subject of this study. Jane Jacobs …

There's A Pattern Here: The Case To Integrate Environmental Security Into Homeland Security Strategy, James D. Ramsay May 2013

There's A Pattern Here: The Case To Integrate Environmental Security Into Homeland Security Strategy, James D. Ramsay

Applied Aviation Sciences - Daytona Beach

The time is long overdue to acknowledge that global climate and resource stresses, encompassed by the concept of environmental security (ES), are an increasingly important part of "homeland" security (HS) study and practice, by even the most restricted definitions of HS. Environmental security issues will affect global economic and political stability, US national interests, and the risk of war and terrorism. Just as homeland security encompasses many complex issues and interconnected subfields, environmental security (ES) is interdisciplinary by nature. In essence, ES is an emergent discipline borrowing from a combination of environmental studies — which decades ago integrated environmental science …

A Historical, Empirical Analysis Of The Relationship Between Urbanization And Stream Baseflow In The Eastern United States, Jared Michael Lopes May 2013

A Historical, Empirical Analysis Of The Relationship Between Urbanization And Stream Baseflow In The Eastern United States, Jared Michael Lopes

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

The population density of the United States has more than tripled over the last century causing increased urbanization and greater anthropogenic influences in previously rural watersheds. Urbanization leads to increased impervious surfaces and the compaction of soils, both of which combine to reduce infiltration rates. Reduced baseflow can directly limit water availability for approximately half the U.S. population that depends on surficial waters for their drinking water. This project empirically investigated the baseflow-urbanization relationship on a geographic and temporal scale that has not been previously investigated. USGS river gage data in 11 eastern U.S. states (NY south of the Adirondacks, …
